Photoactive polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels (PVA) have been investigated for use as tissue engineering scaffolds. These materials allow in situ polymerization for minimally invasive implantation methods. The mechanical properties of these materials can be tailored for a variety of soft tissue applications. The Youngs modulus and ultimate tensile strength of PVA hydrogels are increased with increasing polymer concentration, and highly elastic hydrogels can be formed by altering the number of crosslinkable groups per chain. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is characterized for its high water holding capacity, high crystallinity, an ultrafine fiber network and high tensile strength. This work demonstrates the production of a new interpenetrated polymer network nanocomposite obtained through the incorporation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on the BC matrix and evaluates the effect of oven drying on the morphological, mechanical and mass transfer properties of the composite membranes. Both the addition of PVA and oven drying induce the appearance of larger pores (circa 1-3 µm in average diameter) in dried BC/PVA membranes. Both types of treatments also affect the permeability of the composite, as assessed by the diffusion coefficients of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules (900, 8,000, 35,000 and 100,000 Da) across the membranes. Finally, the Youngs modulus of dry pristine BC decreases following PVA incorporation, resulting in a change from 3.5 GPa to 1 GPa and a five-fold loss in tensile strength.

Long term storage surveillance was conducted on pyrotechnic compositions employing vinyl alcohol acetate resin (VAAR) as a binder. The storage stability of the composition after it had been exposed to ambient and high temperature (167F) storage conditions was determined. Weight losses occurred when pyrotechnic ingredients and compositions containing VAAR were conditioned at 167F; however, these weight losses were tolerable with nominal (4-6%) VAAR concentrations. Thermochemical analysis revealed that the presence of VAAR lowers the ignition and the degradation temperature of pyrotechnic ingredients and compositions. In all cases, however, these temperatures remained above any temperature likely to be encountered in actual storage. The illuminance and burning rate characteristics of typical yellow, red, and green consolidated systems containing VAAR did not show any changes as a result of a one-year surveillance period at both ambient and high (167F) temperatures. Abstract Electrospun nanofibers with designed or controlled structures have drawn much attention. In this study, we report an interesting new closed-loop structure in individual cerium nitrate/polyvinyl alcohol (Ce(NO3)3/PVA) and NaCl/PVA fibers, which are fabricated by electrospinning with a nail collector. The electrospinning parameters such as voltage and Ce(NO3)3 (or NaCl) concentration are examined for the formation of the closed-loop structure. The results suggest that the increase of the spinning voltage or addition of Ce(NO3)3 (or NaCl) is favorable for the formation of the closed-loop structure, and the increase of loop numbers and the decrease of loop size.
