The rigid polyurethane of the present invention can have excellent insulating properties.

Presented work was undertaken to elaborate a repeatable method of fabrication of a hybrid (coated with livin cells) material that could be used in various blood circulatory support devices, e.g. artificial heart and its parts or vessels implants. The work involves chemical modification of already existing synthetic polymer - polyurethane - with evaluation after each step and cultivation of human endothelial cells on final material surface in order to indicate cells adhesion, growth and proliferation. A three-step chemical method of immobilizing collagen onto polyurethane surface was proposed. Final materials were non-toxic to endothelial cells and promoted cells proliferation and growth. Also, there was an expected change in cells morphology due to interaction with collagen. The whole process does not involve harsh conditions or complex equipment, therefore it is suitable to be utilized on a large scale.

This invention relates to radiopaque polyurethane compositions which are reaction products of(a) cycloaliphatic diisocyanates;(b) at least one polyether diol having a molecular weight of from about 500 to about 6000; and(c) an isocyanate-reactive bromine-containing compound selected from the group consisting of(i) tetrabromodipentaerythritol and(ii) a mixture of tetrabromodipentaerythritol and dibromoneopentyl glycol; and(d) optionally, a catalyst;wherein the amount of component (c) is such that bromine constitutes at least 15% by weight of the polyurethane composition, wherein the weight ratio of component (b) to component (c) is from about 2:98 to about 55:45, and wherein the components are reacted at an isocyanate index of from about 95 to about 120.
Polycarbonate polyurethane (PCPU) has been studied as a novel polymer impregnated with nanoparticles for improved mechanical, thermal and adhesion properties [4]. This study investigates the synthesis of polycarbonate polyurethane (PCPU) polymeric nanofiber membranes by the process of electrospinning. This study further examines all the parameters associated with electrospinning a novel PCPU polymeric solution impregnated with nanofillers, such as nanoparticles, to produce fiber membranes. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and N, N dimethylformamide (DMF) are used as solvents to dissolve PCPU polymer. One percent (1%) of nanofillers like silver and silica nanoparticles are added to PCPU polymer solution to investigate the impact on polymer solution properties, which in turn affects the fiber formation. Process parameters are studied by evaluating the impact each parameter has on the fiber formation. A thermoplastic, resinous mixture, useful in the preparation of compatible blends of polyurethane with polyolefins, is disclosed. The mixture contains(i) a thermoplastic polyurethane, and(ii) an agent which is the product of the reaction between a polyamide and a modified polyolefin.The inventive mixture may be used as a component in thermoplastic molding compositions which contain a polyolefin, preferably polypropylene. Improved mechanical properties characterize the molding compositions thus prepared.

Background. Absence of a permanent vascular access in most patients starting haemodialysis remains a cause of high morbidity and costs. This study obtained new clinical and colour Doppler ultrasound (CDU) data of a polyurethane vascular access graft (PVAG) proposing early post‐operative cannulation.. Methods. Baseline characteristics were determined in 15 patients and the PVAGs were evaluated prospectively including first cannulation, patency and complications. CDU was used post‐operatively and after 1 year for assessing graft morphology and access blood flow.. Results. PVAGs were cannulated at a median of 4 days post‐operatively. The 1‐year primary patency of the PVAG was 66.7%. During the 15 months observation three grafts thrombosed, one was replaced because of infection and one because of ischaemia.
