The objective was to verify the effect of high-purified collagen gel coating in the immune-inflammatory response, host collagen metabolism, and angiogenesis around polypropylene mesh.Methods: In 20 female Wistar rats were implanted, at one side of the abdominal wall, a monofilament polypropylene mesh (PP), and, on the other side, a mesh coated with a new highly purified collagen gel (PPC). To describe a method to overcome the nonavailability of a long needle 9-0 polypropylene suture for sutured scleral fixation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) using a single fishermans knot (SFK). Methods. First, a 10-0 polypropylene suture was passed from the sclera to the ciliary sulcus using a long needle. A 9-0 suture was tied to the unpassed portion of the 10-0 suture with an SFK. We pulled the 10-0 suture to pass the SFK through the sclera, and then we cut the knot and removed the 10-0 suture. IOL fixation with 9-0 sutures used the conventional techniques used for sutured scleral-fixated IOL. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, corneal astigmatism, and endothelial cell count and intraoperative/postoperative complications were evaluated. Results. For the long term, unsupervised use of these unconventional sockets, their material properties and structural integrity must be determined. This study investigated the structural integrity of polypropylene sockets manufactured using a polymer deposition technique, in which a socket is formed by a continuous strand of partially melted polypropylene that is spirally deposited according to the sockets cross-sectional contour. Commingled biocomposites based on polypropylene/jute yarns were prepared using commingling technique. The thermal and calorimetric behaviour of these commingled composites were studied with respect to fibre content and various chemical treatments. The thermal stability of the composites was found to be in between that of jute fibre and neat polypropylene (PP). Different chemical treatments increased the thermal stability of the composites due to increased interfacial adhesion between the matrix and reinforcement. Jute yarn acts as nucleating agents and favours the process of crystallisation thereby increasing the crystallisation temperature. Chemical treatments further increased the crystallisation temperature as a result of better interfacial adhesion between jute yarn and PP matrix. The close proximity of jute yarns weakens the mechanical bonds between PP molecules resulting in marginal lowering of melting temperatures. OBJECTIVE: To compare the surgical outcomes 12 months after laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy performed with porcine dermis and the current gold standard of polypropylene mesh.METHODS: Patients scheduled for laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy were eligible for this randomized controlled trial. Both our clinical research nurse and the patients were blinded as to which material was used. Our primary end point was objective anatomic cure defined as no pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q) points Stage 2 or greater at any postoperative interval. The crystallization and morphology of very-low-density polyethylene (VLDPE) and ultra-low-density polyethylene (ULDPE) blends with isotactic polypropylene (PP) were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage optical microscopy (HSOM) with polarized light. In particular, the isothermal crystallization of PP in molten PE was investigated. A polypropylene homopolymer was melt-blended with six types of VLDPEs and ULDPEs, with variations in branch content and length and in molecular weight. All the blends contained 20% PP by mass. It was found that the crystallization temperatures of PP and PE changed in the blends, and the crystallization of PP was affected by branch length and content and by the molecular weight of the PE, indicating a certain degree of miscibility between PP and PE.
