TY - JOUR. T1 - Fatigue crack propagation in polymethylmethacrylate bone cements. AU - Wright, Timothy M.. AU - Robinson, Raymond P.. PY - 1982/9/1. Y1 - 1982/9/1. N2 - The fatigue crack propagation behaviour of a conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement was examined and compared with those of a low-viscosity PMMA cement and a carbon-fibre reinforced PMMA cement. The low-viscosity PMMA cement, developed for use in cement pressurization systems, did not differ significantly from conventional PMMA cement in its crack propagation behaviour. The carbon-fibre reinforced PMMA cement exhibited crack propagation rates which were approximately an order of magnitude less than those of conventional PMMA at the same range of stress intensity factor. Fractography of the test specimens revealed separation around prepolymerized PMMA beads and void formation around barium sulphate particles. Examination of carbon reinforced PMMA specimens showed poor mechanical bonding between the carbon fibres ...

The incorporation of well-dispersed graphene oxide (GO) and graphene (G) has been demonstrated as a promising solution to improve the mechanical performance of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cements in an attempt to enhance the long-term survival of the cemented orthopaedic implants. However, to move forward with the clinical application of graphene-based PMMA bone cements, it is necessary to ensure the incorporation of graphene-based powders do not negatively affect other fundamental properties (e.g., thermal properties and biocompatibility), which may compromise the clinical success of the implant. In this study, the effect of incorporating GO and G on thermal properties, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial activity of PMMA bone cement was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry studies demonstrated that the extent of the polymerisation reaction, heat generation, thermal conductivity, or glass transition temperature were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected by the addition of the ...

Chlorhexidine (CHX) has been incorporated into the composition of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dental restorations to enhance their antimicrobial performance. However, the controlled delivery of CHX remains a challenge. Although previous findings with pure silica or polymer coatings demonstrated the resistance to bacterial adhesion, they did not provide antibacterial activity beyond the coated surface. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are widely used in biomedical science as a transfer medium in drug delivery systems. Here, the MSNs are used to encapsulate CHX, and the combination is added to PDMS. A thin coating film is formed on the PMMA, using oxygen plasma and thermal treatment. The liquid chromatography analysis shows that the coating film has high encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity, with a slow and stable release rate of CHX. The cytotoxicity tests also show that the coating does not affect the proinflammatory cytokines, cellular mitotic activity,

The population in developed countries is ageing and the number of people experiencing joint-related conditions, such as osteoarthritis, is expected to increase. Joint replacements are currently the most effective treatment for severe joint conditions and although many of these procedures are successful, infection developing after the procedure is still an issue, requiring complex and expensive revisions. Whilst incorporating a powdered antibiotic within the bone cement can reduce infection rates, the powder frequently agglomerates, resulting in poor antibiotic release characteristics and compromised mechanical performance of the cement. To overcome these issues, a novel delivery system consisting of antibiotic-loaded nano-sized liposomes was developed for inclusion into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement. This system was tested in a commercial cement (Palacos R) and consistently delivered a higher percentage (22%) of the incorporated antibiotic when compared to the powdered antibiotic ...

Say acetone, and what comes to a chemists mind? Washing laboratory glassware is a good bet. Actually, the prime use of acetone is to produce polymethyl methacrylate, better known as Plexiglas. Much of the five million tons of acetone produced annually in the world goes towards satisfying the hunger for Plexiglas. Skylights, light fixtures, automobile parts, furniture, pediatric incubators, hockey rinks, fish tanks, medical implants, household appliances and even drum shells are all made of this material.. Plexiglas was introduced in 1936 by the Rohm and Haas Company. The actual process for making polymethyl methacrylate starts by reacting acetone with hydrogen cyanide to produce acetone cyanohydrin, which is then converted to methyl methacrylate, which in turn is then polymerized to yield polymethylmethacrylate. Plexiglas quickly proved strong enough to be used in the cockpits of military aircraft and was also used in the bomber noses of airplanes. Then came dentures, automobile taillights and ...

The effect of the size and the size distribution of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) beads on the classical kinetic parameters, peak temperature and setting time, for acrylic bone cement formulations prepared with PMMA particles in the range 10-60 microns of average diameter and a relatively wide size distribution is analysed. In addition, the combined effects of the concentration of the free radical initiator benzoyl peroxide and the activator N, N-dimethyl-4-toluidine for the different particle sizes are studied and compared with those commercially available formulations like CMW or Rostal. The results obtained indicated that the use of PMMA particles with average diameter of 50-60 microns, and a relatively wide size distribution (10-140 microns diameter), significantly changes the curing parameters (peak temperature and setting time) of the cement formulations in comparison with the classical behaviour of the commercial systems of CMW and Rostal, without any noticeable loss in the mechanical
Hydroxyapatite cement was investigated in situ for the reconstruction of juxta-articular defects. Polymethylmethacrylate is currently the most commonly used material for the reconstruction of bone defects following the exteriorization and curettage of aggressive benign tumors. In vitro, we compared the effects of hydroxyapatite cement and polymethylmethacrylate in restoring the stiffness of the subchondral plate in a caprine femoral defect model. Ten matched pairs of caprine femora underwent nondestructive compression testing normal to the load-bearing surface. A standardized subchondral defect 12 mm in diameter was created in the medial femoral condyle. Compression testing was repeated to determine the reduction in stiffness caused by the defect. Each femur from each pair was randomly assigned to one of two groups (n=9), and the defects were augmented with either polymethylmethacrylate or hydroxyapatite cement. After 12 hours, compression testing was repeated to determine the subchondral stiffness
For a correct placement and early fixation of an uncemented hip prosthesis, a centralizer is used. Normally, the centralizer is made of PMMA, the same material as bone cement. When a revision is needed, PMMA is difficult to remove, which is one of the reason not to use a cemented hip prosthesis. With a PMMA centralizer, still PMMA will remain in the bone and needs to be removed in case of a revision. PEGT/PBT is a reabsorbable material, which gives stability during the first month after the placement of the hip prosthesis. However, PEGT/PBT is reabsorped afterwards and, therefore, will not interfere with a revision procedure.. The goal of this study is to analyse if the PEGT/PBT is as safe as PMMA in terms of alignment, direct postoperative complications and clinical results.. Therefore, 100 patients indicated for a cementless Bihapro hip prosthesis which have signed an informed consent are included and randomised over the used centralizers using a weighted randomisation method. All patients ...

In orthopaedics, PMMA bone cement is used to affix implants and to remodel lost bone. It is supplied as a powder with liquid methyl methacrylate (MMA). When mixed these yield a dough-like cement that gradually hardens. Surgeons can judge the curing of the PMMA bone cement by pressing their thumb on it. Although PMMA is biologically compatible, MMA is considered to be an irritant and a possible carcinogen. PMMA has also been linked to cardiopulmonary events in the operating room due to hypotension. [8] Bone cement acts like a grout and not so much like a glue in arthroplasty. Although sticky, it primarily fills the spaces between the prosthesis and the bone preventing motion. It has a Youngs modulus between cancellous bone and cortical bone. Thus it is a load sharing entity in the body not causing bone resorption. [9] ...
The TNO gap test is one method to determine the shock sensitivity of a high explosive. The system consists of a donor charge, a polymethylmethacrylate PMMA attenuator (the gap) and an acceptor charge (the high explosive to be tested). The shock pressure delivered to the acceptor is varied by changing the length of the gap. The donor system (donor charge and attenuator) has been calibrated six times. This has been necessary because the composition of the hexocire donor has been changed in November 1994. The calibration is performed by determining the shock pressure as a function of the length of the gap. It appears that the change of composition of the hexocire donor results in an other calibration curve. The reproducibility of the calibration curves is too small at lower (i.e. shorter than 10 mm) and higher gap length (longer than 40 mm). This is also caused by the fit method. The determined calibration curves can be used between gap length from 10 mm until 40 mm.*POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE
The C-14 polymethyl methacrylate (C-14-PMMA) impregnation technique is used to analyse the spatial distribution of porosity. As such, this work focuses on two interlinked aims: to further develop the C-14-PMMA impregnation technique, particularly the polymerisation and autoradiography steps; and to further develop its application extending it from granitic materials to fine-grained structures such as clays as well. To achieve these aims, method development focused on making the C-14-PMMA impregnation technique more flexible and suitable to a wide variety of conditions while maintaining its robustness. As such, we investigated the use of thermally degrading initiators and other impregnants. Thus, we examined the use of thermally degrading initiators as a way of completing the entire sample handling procedure in a laboratory without necessitating transportation to irradiation facilities, which are currently rare. Furthermore, we studied the use of a water-soluble comonomer, 2-hydroxyethyl ...

Since the dawn of the 18th century, efforts to develop an ideal keratoprosthesis (KPro) have not yielded the dream KPro yet, but the journey to such an invention has given us a few notable devices and valuable experience with a number of biomaterials. The invention of a KPro started with a piece of silver-rimmed glass proposed by Pellier de Quengsy.1 We now have the latest iteration of Boston Type 1 KPro with a porous titanium back plate.2 Although the Pintucci KPro (Dacron mesh skirt and PMMA optic) and the AlphaCor (hydrogel matrix) were in clinical use for a good length of time, they failed to retain over the long term.1 We learnt that bio-integration is essential for the skirt and bio-inertness for the optic. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has largely solved the search for a stable and durable optic though the search for an ideal skirt material is still ethereal.. As we speak, the Boston type-1 KPro and the osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) have emerged as the most sustainable devices. ...

Through the more recent advancements in CAD CAM a new, much more accurate, predictable workflow is now available for comprehensive cases. This does not necessarily replace a diagnostic wax up, but in many cases, it can. It involves milling of a CVB prior to fabrication of the definitive restoration. The protocol includes an intraoral try-in of a final case design prior to fabrication of the definitive restoration. By doing so, one can check intraorally all the essential design elements and parameters. A CVB is a milled PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) try-in bridge. The CVB is essentially a milled acrylic bridge that is milled from a CAD design intended to be used for the final restoration. Once the try-in is performed and evaluated, the original CVB design can be brought back to the CAD stage and altered or tweaked as needed to insure predictability and accuracy of the final restoration. Here is how it works ...

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most common material used in Prosthodontics. Several studies indicate a breakdown of the number of very high resin bases after 2 to 3 years to avoid breaking bass and several attempts have been made, such as altering the chemical structure of resin by adding causes cross linking or copolymerization. The innovative method for improving the physical properties of the prosthesis and increase its strength, a copolymer of styrene - methyl methacrylate was proposed. Tensile strength increased with the increase of styrene with methyl methacrylate in an amount determined to be the most resistant. Polystyrene and poly methyl methacrylate and copolymers characterized by FTIR, CNMR and Tg and tensile strength were measured according to ISO1567 standard.
0003]Polymethylmethacrylate bone cements can be mixed in suitable mixing beakers with spatulas by mixing the cement powder with the monomer liquid. This procedure is disadvantageous in that inclusions of air may be present in the cement dough thus formed and may later cause destabilization of the bone cement. For this reason, it is preferable to mix bone cement powder with the monomer liquid in vacuum mixing systems, since mixing in a vacuum removes inclusions of air from the cement dough all but completely and attains optimal cement quality (Breusch, S. J. et al., Der Stand der Zementiertechnik in Deutschland [The State of Cementing Technology in Germany], Z. Orthop., 137: 101-07 (1999)). Bone cements mixed in a vacuum have substantially lower porosity and thus show improved mechanical properties. A large number of vacuum cementing systems have been disclosed of which the following shall be named for exemplary purposes: U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,033,105; 5,624,184; 4,671,263; 4,973,168; 5,100,241; ...
2018 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. In this research, mechanical properties of bone cement containing micro- and nano-hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles were studied. The bone cement was prepared from mixing between polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Hydroxyapatite powder was prepared from bovine bone. The bone was heated in hot water at 200oc for the elimination of tissue, after which the bone was dried and calcined at 800oc for 3 hrs. The calcined bone then was crushed into powder and ball-milled for 24 hrs. The micro-HAp particle was then obtained. The micro particles were then further milled employing the Vibro-milling machine for 2 hrs. The micro- and nano- HAp sizes are about 0.5 µm and 140 nm, respectively. The both size powders were treated with γ-methacrylic-propyl-tri-methoxy silane. The acetic acid was added to control the pH of the solution, until it reached 2.9 before they were mixed into the bone cement with equally wt%. The mixture was casted using ...
Objectives: to compare the in vitro elution characteristics of tobramycin impregnated beads made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Design: Six-millimeter PCL and PMMA beads with 6% tobramycin were formed and placed in phosphate-buffered saline or newborn calf serum and incubated at room temperature or 37°C. Aliquots were taken at intervals for eight weeks. Tobramycin levels were determined by fluorescent assay and antibacterial efficacy was assessed by measuring the zones of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on agar diffusion plates. Results: Tobramycin elution rates at room temperature were similar up to three weeks. At three weeks, elution rates from PCL beads were twice those from PMMA beads, and at eight weeks, elution from PCL was quadruple that from PMMA. At 37°C, tobramycin elution rates from PCL were eight times greater than those from PMMA by eight weeks. Total tobramycin eluted from PCL beads was 38.9% and 20% in PMMA beads. All
Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is widely used in vertebral body augmentation procedures such as vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty. Filling high modulus PMMA increases the modulus of filled verterbra, increasing the risk of fracture in the adjacent vertebra. On the other hand, in porous PMMA bone cements, wear particle generation and deterioration of mechanical performance are the major drawbacks. This study adopts a new approach by utilizing linoleic acid coated strontium substituted hydroxyapatite nanoparticle (Sr-5 HA) and linoleic acid as plasticizer reducing bone cements modulus with minimal impact on its strength. We determined the compressive strength (UCS) and modulus (Ec), hydrophobicity, injectability, in vitro bioactivity and biocompatibility of this bone cement at different filler and linoleic acid loading. At 20 wt % Sr5-HA incorporation, UCS and Ec were reduced from 63 ± 2 MPa, 2142 ± 129 MPa to 58 ± 2 MPa, 1785 ± 64 MPa, respectively. UCS and Ec were ...

The fracture or failure behaviours of four commercial acrylic-based bone cements have been examined in tensile, bending and compression modes, and their mechanical properties are reviewed. It was found that Palacos R-40 bone cement had high radiopaque agent concentration, with high surface hardness. It exhibited a much lower bending strength and bending modulus compared with the other three bone cements (CMW1, CMW2000 and Simplex P). The textures of tensile fracture surfaces produced were similar for the four bone cements studied. The fracture surface was fragmented by crevices, which developed through the matrix and around large undissolved polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads. Three bands with different features existed on the bending fracture surfaces, with an abrupt transition between them. It appears that the agglomerates of zirconium dioxide particles are implicated in Palacos R-40 bone cement fracture surface. The examination of compressive failed specimens revealed that a yielded crack ...

The efficacy of antibiotic-loaded acrylic bone cements (ALBC) for prophylaxis of deep surgical site infections (deep SSIs) after primary cemented joint replacement surgery remains controversial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the issue, with respect to three types of arthroplasty, namely, total knee arthroplasty (TKA), total hip arthroplasty (THA), and bipolar hip arthroplasty (BHA).
An Experimental setup was designed to conduct ignition experiments for mixtures of the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) pyrolyzed gas and air. Suitable ignition methods for microgravity experiments were reviewed, and the laser induced spark ignition was employed to investigate the ignition limit of the mixture. The pyrolyzed gas of PMMA was produced under an emission of the halogen lamp in a vessel filled with nitrogen and air. The gaseous components were sampled and analyzed by a gas chromatograph. Most pyrolyzed component was methyl methacrylate (MMA). Therefore, ignition process of MMA/air mixtures was experimentally investigated under a microgravity condition available from parabolic flights. Ignition tests were performed at 0.1MPa under microgravity and normal gravity conditions. The results indicated that the minimum ignition energy in microgravity decreased compared with that in normal gravity. Initial flame kernel formation and the growth had the preferable direction due to flow fields ...

The present invention is directed to a polymeric prosthesis precoated with a bone cement compatible polymer. The bone cement compatible polymer coating, is provided by an activated powder mixture of polymethyl methacrylate and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene which is bonded to the outer surface of the prosthesis by sintering. Once bonded to a polymeric prosthesis in accordance with the present invention, the precoat strengthens the interface between a bone cement and a prosthesis when the prosthesis is later implanted. The inner layer of the prosthesis may be provided of cross-linked UHMWPE powder sintered with virgin UHMWPE powder or fibers to provide a intermediate layer(s) of the coating present on the prosthesis. The precoat also decreases the likelihood that the prosthesis will loosen and break away from the cement over time. The polymeric implant product of the present invention is particularly well suited for use as an acetabular cup or a tibia plateau in replacing hip joints and knee
The authors synthesized anisotropic microparticles with dumbbell morphologies that were composed of (or combinations of) polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and polybutyl methacrylate (PBMA). The cross-linked PS regions of the anisotropic colloids could be surface functionalized after synthesis with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), 9-vinylanthracene, and vinylsilane. The synthesis scheme for the colloids synthesis is given in Figure 1. Briefly, following a previously reported protocol, spherical microparticles of cross-linked PS (noted as CPS in the papers figures) were synthesized and swollen for 10 hours to a diameter of approximately 2.7 microns in a solution containing MMA/BMA/styrene monomer (20 vol %), divinylbenzene (DVB, 1 vol %), and the azo polymerization initiator V-65B (2,2-azodi(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile)) at room temperature. The monomer-loaded PS beads were then polymerized at 70 degrees Celsius for 8 hours. During this polymerization step, elastic stress in the ...

But Food and Drug Administration (FDA) medical officer Janette Alexander, M.D., advises that its important to know the risks before having the treatment.. What are Dermal Fillers, and How Are They Used?. Injectable dermal fillers are soft tissue and wrinkle fillers approved by FDA as medical devices. Generally, these products are injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. In addition, fat taken from other body areas is often used with the same goals. Alexander says that most of the fillers achieve a smoothing or filling effect, which lasts for about six months or longer in most people.. FDA has approved only one permanent wrinkle filler, which contains the polymethylmethacrylate beads. These are tiny round, smooth, biocompatible plastic particles that are not absorbed by the body. The filler is FDA-approved only for correcting facial tissue around the mouth.. In addition, FDA has approved a number of injectable dermal fillers that are temporary ...

The etching of poly(methyl methacrylate) using pulses of 248 nm laser radiation which had a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 40â€100 ns is reported. These pulses were created by combining two identical pulses, each of 40 ns FWHM, with a set time delay. The etch depth/pulse is sensitive to the pulse width and, therefore, the power density in this polymer. It can be explained by the changes in absorptivity during a pulse that have been reported by G. M. Davis and M. C. Gower [J. Appl. Phys. 61, 2090 (1987)]. The shape of the pulse was also found to influence the etch depth/pulse. The etching of polyimide by these extended pulses shows trends that are opposite to those observed in poly(methyl methacrylate). In this instance, the shielding of the latter portion of the incoming pulse by the products that are ablated by the front portion is probably a serious effect ...

Acrylic wrap offers bold, durable colour by using a high-performance film that is permanently bonded to the PVC window frame. Whereas paint requires frequent maintenance and metal cladding is beautiful but cant be used for interior applications, acrylic film offers great customizable colour without sacrificing durability. The wrap also features a contemporary stipple emboss finish that pairs well with modern home interiors and exteriors. Its low surface tension means that it can be wiped clean easily and it has a strong resistance to chalking, cracking and fading.. The multi-layered film is comprised of a transparent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer, a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) layer and a pigmented acrylic base later that reflects heat away from the window using Solar Shield Technology (SST). This unique combination of polymers provides reduced heat absorption, improved UV resistance and excellent long-term weathering.. ...

The solar energy industry strives to produce more and more efficient and yet cost effective photovoltaic (PV) panels. Integration of specific micro/nano optical structures on the top surface of the PV panels is one of the efficient ways to increase their PV performance through enhancing light trapping and in-coupling. In this study, periodic triangular gratings (PTGs) in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were numerically simulated and optimized. The goal of this study is to enhance the ability of solar panels to convert maximum obtainable amount of solar energy by improving the optical in-coupling of light to PV material. Initial optical simulation results shown that a flat PV panel (without any enhancing micro-optical structures) exhibits an average incident light power of 0.327 W over a range of the incident light angles between 15º and 90º. Introduction of the PTG allows capturing the incoming sunlight and reflecting it back onto the PV material for a second or more chances for absorption and ...
Dry etching is widely used for nanofabrication and it requires reliable etching masks. However, hard dry etching masks usually need high-temperature and/or plasma deposition, which may causes damage to temperature-sensitive materials and semiconductor surface. Here, we develop a novel etching mask material, silicon monoxide (SiO), which is thermally evaporated and hence can avoid such drawbacks. The etching selectivity of evaporated SiO is shown to be higher than 50:1, comparable to sputtered SiO2. A nanochannel device, called self-switching diode (SSD), is fabricated to evaluate the mask-deposition-process damage because of its high sensitivity to the process damage. In comparison to commonly used sputtered SiO2 and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) mask, the SSD fabricated using evaporated SiO exhibit the highest channel conductance, strongest nonlinearity, and best high-frequency performance. Hall measurements also reveal that the carrier mobility of nanochannels etched with SiO mask is twice ...

Vertebroplasty is achieved through a hollow needle that is exceeded via the pores and skin of your lower back into the fractured vertebra. In vertebroplasty, bone cement (referred to as polymethylmethacrylate) is injected thru the hole needle into the fractured bone. The process is repeated for every affected vertebra. The cement-reinforced vertebra allows you to face immediately, reduces your ache, and prevents in addition fractures.. Without treatment, the fractures will sooner or later heal, however in a collapsed role. The gain of vertebroplasty is that your vertebra is back to ordinary function earlier than the bone hardens.. For the duration of surgical operation a nearby anesthetic is injected inside the location where a small, half of-inch skin incision might be made over the fractured bone. With the resource of a fluoroscope (a unique X-ray machine), massive diameter needles are inserted into the vertebral frame thru the pedicles. The fluoroscopy display lets in the health care ...

doi: 10.3827/faoj.2008.0107.0006. The use of polymethylmethacrylate antibiotic spacers is commonly used in the management of osteomyelitis of the hip, knee, and ankle joint. This method permits a local delivery of concentrated antibiotics while avoiding elevated systemic levels. [1] After removal of internal hardware and debridement of necrotic tissue and/or bone, the dead space needs to be managed. Spacers made of antibiotic impregnated cement were designed to prevent soft tissue contraction and maintain extremity alignment while awaiting prosthetic implantation or arthrodesis type procedures.. Typically, these spacers are shaped according to the size and shape of the defect. In the ankle joint, intramedullary spacers are constructed in the shape of a cylinder with the use of a ball tipped pin, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement, and heat stabile antibiotics.. It may be a challenge to remove the intramedullary spacer in some patients. Several methods and instrumentation have been described ...
