Joint replacement surgery in the treatment of arthritic disease is now commonplace and on the whole very successful. Research into the design and development of prostheses has made major advances since the 1940s resulting in complex devices for almost all articulating joints of the body. In this thesis, a programme of work to design and test a surface replacement prosthesis for the metacarpophalangeal joint is presented. The anatomy and kinematics of the MCP joint are discussed for both normal and abnormal joint function and, based on these considerations, the design of a new surface replacement prosthesis is described. Various materials are explored with respect to their biocompatibility, durability and ease of fabrication with special attention being paid to one material - a new cross linked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene - which is tested for wear and assessed for durability in long-term prototype tests. The aim of this study was the analysis and characterization of composites based on thermoplastics (ethylene vinyl acetate, polypropilene and high-density polyethylene) and chicken feathers. Several composite samples with a content of 20% v/v of chicken feathers have been studied to determine the optimal manufacturing conditions of temperature, mixing time, and mixing speed to achieve the best tensile properties. The results have shown that the addition of micronized chicken feather (20% v/v) to thermoplastic matrices increases stiffness and provides a more brittle behavior. Ethylene vinyl acetate matrix also shows an ability to participate in second-order intermolecular interactions with chicken feathers, providing better tensile properties (tensile strength and toughness) than polypropilene and high-density polyethylene. The use of UV light as an alternative to thermal treatments above the melting point (150 °C) to remove free radicals in irradiated UHMWPE was explored. It was found that, in contrast to the allyl free radical which is converted by 258 nm light to alkyl free radicals, polyenyl radicals are not converted to alkyl radicals by UV light. None-the-less, by sandwiching UV light treatments between low temperature thermal anneals (100 °C), it was possible to reduce free radical concentrations by 30%. This reduction was achievable for depths up to one millimeter. However, this reduction did not have a significant effect on oxidation due to an increase in oxidation susceptibility because of the concurrent increase in concentration of easily abstracted allylic hydrogens. The crack propagation and hardening effect of a divalent and trivalent iron concentration gradient were studied in magnesium oxide single crystals. The relative hardening versus iron concentration was found to be a nonlinear relation. An explanation is presented based on equilibrium constant relationships to account for this power variation. Samples containing Fe(+3) ions in solid solution were aged for various times to study the effects of magnesioferrite precipitation in the concenetration gradient. Once coherency was broken, the hardening of MgO due to the magnesioferrite precipitates was found to be a linear function of the iron concentration.
