Polio, Vaccination and I Two weeks ago, an attack aimed at health workers in Kano State brought my attention to Polio. Opposition for Polio vaccination appears to be the strongest reason for such an attack, or perhaps the strongest cover. Until two weeks ago, I knew Polio to be a disease but honestly could not…

Going on an extended holiday to a disease-prone country? Its a good idea to schedule a check-up at least eight weeks before you depart. Infectious diseases abroad can be very serious. Every year, Australian travellers become ill and die while travelling overseas. Take extra precautions when visiting these countries that youll need a polio vaccination to enter. Note: many of these countries are not recommended travel destinations (and some may be excluded by certain travel insurance policies). But here at Cover-More, we understand that not travelling is not always an option. If you must travel to these countries, be prepared and take full precautions.

Previous polio communication strategies often focused on risk communication and targeted caregivers with facts about polio and polio vaccination. The new strategy is specifically designed to move from a focus on the individuals knowledge and sense of individual risk to addressing broader community perceptions and social norms.. At the core of the approach is an emphasis on missed children and a standardized collection and analysis of social data from at-risk countries. The strategy continually emphasizes the need for a sophisticated understanding of community perception, attitudes and knowledge at the centre of all social and behavioural change communication work and increasingly for it to be seen as a critical component to covering more children with the vaccine.. A partnership between UNICEF and Harvard Universitys Opinion Research Program has significantly improved the programmes ability to access quality data to understand attitudes and perceptions about polio vaccination in communities ...

A Pakistani health official says a five-day antipolio campaign has been launched in the country to vaccinate millions of children under the age of 5.
A case in point are polio vaccination efforts. About 10 years ago, an effort was made to get kids from low-income families in this country vaccinated against the scrooge that once crippled youngsters and prompted fearful parents to order their children to stay away from bodies of water where the virus was widely thought to be contracted. The reason for the effort: the national polio vaccination rate was dropping ...

Both animals and humans are over-vaccinated. Reported side effects range from immune system dysfunction to brain complications to behavioral issues. So how do we know which vaccines to agree to and which to avoid? By using common sense. For example, do we need to continue the polio vaccination? At one time it might have served a great purpose. Is it necessary now? Do we need a flu vaccine when the flu can be prevented by natural and ordinary means? Do our dogs and cats need continual boosters when their blood shows they already carry the antibodies against a particular disease? Do we need any vaccine that prevents a disease that we can prevent ourselves? And furthermore, do we want to agree to be given an injection with known side-effects because a few people who get the ailment die every year from it? If so, then would we also vaccinate ourselves against driving a car? More people die from that every year than we can count ...
The development of effective vaccines to prevent paralytic polio was one of the major medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative uses two types of vaccine to stop polio transmission - inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and oral polio vaccine (OPV).. If enough people in a community are immunized against polio, the virus will be deprived of susceptible hosts and will die out. High levels of vaccination coverage must be maintained to stop transmission and prevent outbreaks occurring. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is constantly assessing the optimal use of the different types of vaccine to prevent paralytic polio and stop poliovirus transmission in different areas of the world.. ...

A further €5 Million has been provided in support of the Polio Eradication & Endgame Strategic Plan (2013-18). The current €400,000 tranche is the latest release under the 2013-18 commitment.. The WHO announced on 25 September 2015 that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria, leaving only two countries in the world where polio remains: Afghanistan and Pakistan. For the first time in history, the entire African continent has marked one year without reporting a single child paralyzed by the wild poliovirus.. The Australian Government will provide a further $6 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to support the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to respond to the current polio outbreak.. In June 2018, the PNG Government declared a national public health emergency in response to confirmed cases of polio virus. The PNG Government, along with key partners including GPEI, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) have developed an outbreak response plan that includes mass vaccination rounds. Australias contribution to GPEI will support the delivery of PNGs polio response plan. PNG is our closest neighbor, and a strong response is needed to protect both PNGs and Australias health security. Routine immunisation remains the most effective prevention for highly infectious diseases including polio.. The Australian Government is committed to the vital work of global polio eradication and has contributed $104 million to support the work of ...
Since January 2001, substantial progress has been made toward polio eradication in SEAR with indigenous circulation of poliovirus now limited to the northern Indian states of UP and Bihar. Two countries in which polio was endemic recently, Bangladesh and Nepal, have remained polio-free. Transmission of P2 appears to have been interrupted globally, with the last case occurring in UP in October 1999. The SMO network has played a vital role in the achievement and maintenance of high-quality AFP surveillance levels in all three countries. Despite this progress, continuing transmission during 2002 in northern India poses a challenge. Circulation of P3 in 2002 has been restricted primarily to western UP. The geographic range of P1 circulation in Bihar has diminished since 2001; however, the spread of wild poliovirus to districts of UP without endemic transmission and to other states in India indicates the urgency of implementing SIAs with improved quality. The principal reasons for failure to ...
GENEVA, Feb. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Buoyed by progress made in two of three countries where polio has never been stopped and Indias recent success marking three years polio-free, the Lawrence Ellison Foundation announced a planned gift of US$100 million over five years to support global polio eradication. Roughly $20 million of that contribution was delivered in 2013. The donation will help fund the Global Polio Eradication Initiatives (GPEI) $5.5 billion six-year plan to eradicate polio. The Lawrence Ellison Foundation brings the number of major philanthropies to 10 that have pledged a total of $535 million, in addition to the $1.8 billion commitment announced by Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, during 2013-2018 to support the GPEI strategy. At the Global Vaccine Summit held in Abu Dhabi last April, more than 35 government and private donors, including the Gates Foundation, pledged $4 billion to support the strategy, recognizing the unique opportunity ...
Since its formation almost 30 years ago, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has put millions of skilled health workers on the ground in regions with formerly limited access to health services, reaching an unprecedented number of children.. These workers dont just deliver polio vaccines. They spend over half of their time working to protect children from other dangerous diseases like measles and rotavirus by introducing and bolstering routine immunization programs, according to the GPEI. In fact, GPEIs network of polio staff constitutes the single largest source of support for immunization services in low-income countries.. In India alone, National Immunization Days see 2.5 million vaccinators and 155,000 supervisors working together to deliver a range of lifesaving vaccines to millions of children. The polio program in the northern Indian state of Bihar contributed to the increase of routine immunization coverage from 19% to 67% between 2005 and 2010, simultaneously achieving polio ...
Only two countries remain endemic to this paralysing disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria.. This is the first time that Nigeria has interrupted transmission of wild poliovirus, bringing the country and the African region closer than ever to being certified polio-free.. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the public-private partnership leading the effort to eradicate polio, called this a historic achievement in global health. Nigeria has not reported a case of wild poliovirus since 24 July 2014, and all laboratory data have confirmed a full 12 months have passed without any new cases.. As recently as 2012, Nigeria accounted for more than half of all polio cases worldwide. This success is the result of a concerted effort by all levels of government, civil society, religious leaders and tens of thousands of dedicated health workers. More than 200,000 volunteers across the country repeatedly immunized more than 45 million ...

Prequalification of bOPV is very good news for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, according to Dr. Fabio Scano, the Officer in Charge of the WHO Representative Office in China. Following last years switch from trivalent OPV to bOPV, most countries are going to rely on a combination of inactivated polio vaccine and bOPV to complete the eradication of polio, and China will now help ensure a sufficient supply of this essential vaccine, he continued.. If there is one disease that illustrates the value of vaccination, it is Polio. Typically the fight against Polio starts with building up the bodys immune system to fight the disease through immunization. Under the Global Polio Eradication Initiative -- the largest public health initiative the world has ever known, 130 million children around the world are immunized before the age of five.. When it comes to immunization there are only two options - oral drops (OPV) or injectable vaccine (IPV). Among these, the oral polio vaccine developed by Polish American scientist Dr. Sabin, has been preferred in many countries because it is administered orally -- usually on a sugar cube. This also does not require a highly trained person to administer the dose i.e. two drops in the mouth ...

Our survey revealed that, among the African countries that conducted AFP surveillance and reported to WHO in 1999, the majority had designated surveillance officers, vehicles, and annual budgets. Moreover, most of the national polio eradication programs combined the surveillance for and response to AFP with other infectious diseases. Our investigation also revealed that certain countries that had prudently added other diseases to their AFP surveillance programs were also able to perform AFP surveillance adequately. However, the survey also indicated that additional staff, funds, and political commitment might be required if infectious disease surveillance and response is to improve in Africa.. AFP surveillance programs have instituted laboratory systems in countries and have formed networks between and within countries and with WHO-AFRO by providing portable computers with modems, telephone/facsimile lines, and electronic mail connections. Our survey results indicated that detection and ...

Vaccination has essentially eradicated poliovirus. Yet, its mutation rate is higher than that of viruses like HIV, for which no effective vaccine exists. To investigate this, we infer a fitness model for the poliovirus viral protein 1 (vp1), which successfully predicts in vitro fitness measurements. This is achieved by first developing a probabilistic model for the prevalence of vp1 sequences that enables us to isolate and remove data that are subject to strong vaccine-derived biases. The intrinsic fitness constraints derived for vp1, a capsid protein subject to antibody responses, are compared with those of analogous HIV proteins. We find that vp1 evolution is subject to tighter constraints, limiting its ability to evade vaccine-induced immune responses. Our analysis also indicates that circulating poliovirus strains in unimmunized populations serve as a reservoir that can seed outbreaks in spatio-temporally localized sub-optimally immunized populations. Poliovirus has a higher mutation rate than HIV,

Today, stories of polio may seem like echoes from far-away history to those born after 1979, the year that polio was eradicated in the U.S. Since then, it has been customary for children to receive four doses of the polio vaccine to protect them from ever contracting the terrifying disease also known as infantile paralysis.. Polio, however, still afflicts people in some areas of the world today. It causes muscle wasting and - in the most severe cases - can completely rob a person of his or her ability to move or breathe, resulting in death.. In the U.S., research efforts to create a polio vaccine lasted much of the 20th century. Although the virus was thriving and spreading among people, researchers repeatedly failed at getting poliovirus to survive in culture.. Then, one of the most crucial breaks in the fight against polio occurred in a Boston Childrens Hospital laboratory in 1949, during the heyday of polio outbreaks. …. ...
