Following changes to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act in August 2007, the Niagara Regional Police Service began replacing red and white Street Hawk emergency lights on police vehicles with new blue and red LED lights. Older-style light bars were gradually phased out through attrition. Niagara Regional Police Service marked patrol vehicles have historically been white in colour. In the late 1980s - early 1990s, they were distinguished with royal blue hoods and a single blue stripe on the sides of the vehicle. In the mid 1990s, the Service adopted the crest used today, switching to blue and green stripes on the sides of patrol vehicles, and abandoning the traditional blue hoods. This striping change was relatively short lived, with the Service soon adopting red and blue striping more commonly seen on police vehicles in Ontario. In 2013, the Niagara Regional Police Service commenced a dramatic re-branding of marked patrol vehicles, adopting a black and white colour scheme, with silver and red ...

D.C. is one of the best examples of a city that completely turned its crime around. The District halved its number of violent crimes between 1995 and 2010, and is no longer considered one of the most dangerous cities in America. The changes might not be permanent, however, as D.C.s police force looks like it will shrink.. D.C.s police force is shrinking due to a myriad of reasons, including the practice of mass hiring in the past, which is causing a current trend of mass retirements, as well as the slowing or halting of hiring in the past decade because of the recession.. Although MPD is in need of people willing and able to work, senior officers are forced into retire due to a mandatory retirement age. On average, according to the Post, 15 officers leave MPD every month.. Furthermore, MPD is finding it difficult to retain new police officers who graduate the D.C. police academy because they became homesick or remained on waiting lists for hometown police departments, says police chief Cathy ...

Missing Women Inquiry commissioner Wally Oppal is calling on the province to create a Greater Vancouver police force after concluding a fractured, badly coordinated police response was a key underlying factor that let serial killer Robert Pickton keep killing for years after he should have been caught.. The former attorney-general, in his four-volume report titled Forsaken, says the fragmentation of policing in the Lower Mainland led to multiple police failures, including uncoordinated parallel investigations and the failure to share key evidence.. He recommends an expert panel develop a proposed new regional policing model and implementation plan.. It is clear from the evidence that a regional police force stood a good chance of apprehending Robert Pickton much earlier, Oppal said, noting the region is the only major centre in Canada without a regional force.. The patchwork of municipal police and RCMP detachments in the region came into stark focus during the inquiry, as Vancouver Police ...
The implementation of this project is rooted in the very widespread use of this technology in other police departments across Canada and the U.S. Citizens recordings of various police interventions have inspired police departments to use the technology themselves so as to be able to view different angles of interventions.. The recommendation of having police officers wear potable cameras was also made in June 2015 by coroner Paul G. Dionne, as part of his report following a citizens death during a Montréal police intervention.. In the fall of 2015, the Ministère de la Sécurité publique tabled its feasibility study of police officers use of portable cameras. The SPVM, along with other police departments in the province, contributed to this document.. Furthermore, it is important to specify that this pilot project is carried out in two phases.. Phase 1. Phase 1 began in May 2016, with some thirty police officers wearing portable cameras. To kick off the pilot project, the SPVM opted to use ...
February 9, 2021. Dear Chair Smith and Members of the House Judiciary Committee:. My name is Emil Parker. I am testifying on House Bill 151, on behalf of Takoma Park Mobilization. Takoma Park Mobilization, with over 2,300 members, is committed to ensuring that the General Assembly takes advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to enact meaningful policing reform legislation.. Accordingly, I am expressing our strong support for HB 151, which would repeal the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights (LEOBR).. Due largely to LEOBR, police officers in Maryland effectively operate under rules they make themselves. They enjoy special rights - in particular, a pre-disciplinary hearing before a board where their fellow law enforcement officers are in the majority - which are not available to other public sector employees. If this majority police officer board finds the officer not guilty - i.e., they side with their fellow officer - the chief of police is barred from imposing any discipline, ...
Nassau officers (along with the neighboring Suffolk County Police Department) have become known in recent years for their exceptionally high rate of pay, especially as compared with the nearby New York City Police Department. In July 2007, a state arbitrator awarded Nassau officers a substantial pay hike, bringing those with nine years seniority eventually to a top salary of $116,955 annually,[12] not counting benefits, overtime and night differential. If past practice is any guide, the increase will likely set a pattern to be matched and surpassed by the Suffolk County Police.. Many New York City Police officers apply for positions in the Nassau force because of this disparity.[13] Failure rates of NYPD officers in the Nassau Police Academy are about the same as non-police officer candidates. Typically, between one-third and one-half of the recruits in every Nassau police academy class are former city officers.[14] A police exam took place between Aug. 13-18, 2007.. Police pay has been a ...

Augusta Universitys Public Safety Division has officially been renamed.. Beginning with the new fiscal year, July 1, Augusta University Police Department is the official title for the department.. Similar to its parent institution, the police department has had many different names before unifying as the AUPD.. We had police bureau, public safety division… so I really wanted to make sure that we branded the department correctly based on the mission that we have, said Chief James Lyon, Augusta University Police Department.. That mission is centered on providing excellent service to the Augusta University community and assisting the university community and AU Health.. Housed under the AUPD are several divisions, including a Patrol Division, an Investigations Division, and two newer divisions: Community Services Division and a Professional Standards Division.. Kudos to our police department. I want to correct wrong information on this blog. I have a police scanner and listen to Atkinson police calls. Last week Atkinson police were called regarding a noise complaint for power tools at Mediation Lane. Around the same time as the horrendous use of power tools (the dispatcher said it was someone power washing their house, and the person who called police took pictures of the guy washing the house. Isnt stalking illegal?), the Atkinson Police were assisting Sunoco employees close the gas station for the night, because Sunoco was burglarized recently after closing (I heard this call on my scanner too when it happened). Then a call came in for the police to respond to a medical call. After the medical call, I heard the police say they were assisting Dunkin Donuts employees close for the night. I understand why, it is very secluded and dark late night on Rte 111 where Dunkin Donuts is located. Seems to me the police were doing real police work, i.e. ...

The Bill sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate and the Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, also has all members of the Committee as co-sponsors.. It seeks to establish The Federal Police and State Police, while also creating the National Police Service Commission, National Police Council, and State Police Service Commission for the states.. The Federal Police, according to the Bill, shall be responsible for the maintenance of public security, preservation of public order and security of persons and property throughout the federation, and provide state policing for any state that is unable to operate a State Police until such a time that a State Police is established by the House of Assembly of that state.. The Bill proposes the appointment of the Commissioner of Police of a state by the Governor on the advice of the National Police Service Commission and subject to confirmation of the House of Assembly, while the term of office ...
A recent letter in The News-Times relating to the Redding Police Department needs some clarification relating to one of the statements contained in the article, particularly: In some towns, including Kent, the resident trooper is the sole local law officer; in others, like New Fairfield, the trooper is aided by one or more constables, who have some police powers and are paid by the town.. I feel this statement might leave the residents of New Fairfield with the impression that our police department is lacking for coverage. Let me be clear - the Police Department in New Fairfield consists of a Resident State Trooper Sergeant who manages the department, six Resident State Troopers and six police officers who have full police powers not some as the article mentions.. Several years ago, the residents of New Fairfield voted at a town referendum to have the town policed in this fashion. In 2016 a committee appointed by the Board of Selectmen reviewed the way the town is policed and recommended to ...

If you still think that the Israelis dont play a tremendously powerful influence on the New York Police Department, then think again. Former Israeli and veteran NYPD detective, Charlie Ben-Naim, would have almost certainly disagreed with you:. Ben-Naim was chosen for the mission of opening the NYPD branch in Israel. He is a veteran detective of the NYPD and a former Israeli who went to study in New York, married a local city resident and then joined the local police force. Among the things he has dealt with in the line of duty are the extradition of criminals, the transmitting of intelligence information and assistance in the location of missing persons, both in the United States and in Israel.[1]. The NYPD even opened an office in Israel back in 2012. It was stated that Behind the opening of the branch in the Holy Land is the NYPD decision that the Israeli police is one of the major police forces with which it must maintain close work relations and daily contact.. We are also told that ...

It appears that the number of attacks against police officers has soared by 22%.

According to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, the attacker came to a checkpoint of the police station at 3:58 p.m.(1358 GMT) local time. Mr. Speaker, it gives me great pleasure today to pay tribute to the Hamilton Police Service, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary.. It was on March 11, 1833 that the newly elected board of police in Hamilton took the momentous step of hiring John Ryckman as Hamiltons first paid law enforcement official. There is an unbroken line leading to todays Hamilton Police Service, a lineage unparalleled by any other police agency in Canada.. It is particularly fitting that in this anniversary year, the Hamilton Police Service received its Grant of Arms and Flag from the Queen. Last Monday nights anniversary celebration included the unveiling of the Grant of Arms and the consecration of the flag as an official police colour.. However, as the only women MP from Hamilton, I want to acknowledge another special milestone within the Hamilton Police Service. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the hiring of the first female police officers. Today, there are 148. As female officers, they face many of ...

In light of the ongoing policing situation in Ferguson, Missouri in the wake of the shooting of an unarmed man by a police officer and how the response to the community protests is highlighting the militarization of US police departments since 9/11, its instructive to look at one of the first and most successful attempts at the formation of a professional police force.. The UK Parliament passed the first Metropolitan Police Act in 1829. The act was introduced by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, who undertook a study of crime and policing, which resulted in his belief that the keys to building an effective police force were to 1) make it professional (most prior policing had been volunteer in nature); 2) organize as a civilian force, not as a paramilitary force; and 3) make the police accountable to the public. The Metropolitan Police, whose officers were referred to as bobbies after Peel, was extremely successful and became the model for the modern urban police force, both in the UK and around ...
The duty of police officers is to serve the public. However, in recent years, there were participants of public assemblies, demonstrations and processions whose behaviour has become increasingly violent. Some protesters even deliberately charged at police officers. During the Mong Kok riot, some people went so far as digging out bricks on pavements and throwing these bricks as well as glass bottles at police officers on duty, resulting in a vast number of officers sustaining injury. This situation is worrying. The HKSAR Government strongly condemns violent and illegal acts. I thank the Honourable Member for his question today, as it arouses everyones concern over this issue. The HKSAR Government and the entire society have to join hands in stopping the spread of the trend of violence. Wounding other people not only breaks the law. If police officers are injured and as a result unable to perform their duties in preserving law and order as well as protecting the safety of lives and property of ...

DENVER (AP) - Colorado may consider marijuana legal, but police dont have to take care of any weed seized in a criminal investigation, according to a state Supreme Court decision that upends years of evidence requirements hated by law enforcement agencies.. The decision issued Monday reverses a 2013 lower court that police officers cant simply destroy pot after they take it as evidence in a case. Instead, police in Colorado have to care for the marijuana, either by keeping the plants alive or by returning dried marijuana in usable form.. Police agencies in Colorado have blamed the ruling for lax pot enforcement, saying they wont store marijuana evidence.. The states highest court reversed that decision Monday. In a 4-3 decision, the court sided with Colorado authorities who argued that the evidence requirement amounted to requiring police to distribute marijuana, a violation of federal law.. Compliance with the return provision necessarily requires law enforcement officers to violate ...

Now Ive always been one to question the role of the police and their role in society. For myself I have not had any negative experiences with the police I must admit but I have heard a lot and read a lot about them and the role they play in a liberal democracy that we apparently live in. There is a commonly held assumption that the police are a necessary presence in a civilised society, one that ensures the preservation of social order. And yet this assumption is deeply ideological, blurring the distinction between the act of policing with the existence of an institutional police force. I am myself increasingly suspicious of the role of the police in 2013. But looking back at history at which a article I will publish below will demonstrate looks aback upon and tries to draw conclusions and ideas from this institution of capitalism . While anthropologists have found policing to be a common feature of all societies, studies have shown that the founding of a police force only occurs in ...

One effective use of social media in policing is sharing information. Hyperlinks, news releases, and alerts can be quickly shared on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. However, according to Massachusetts social media law enforcement strategist, Lauri Stevens, it is community engagement that is most useful for police agencies. She notes: Thats why its called social media, right?. However, Stevens concedes, that when youre the police department it isnt always easy to find friends and followers. Not only may government agencies seem like unappealing friends to some users, it can be difficult to create consistently engaging content. Stevens notes: Its a process and I think that they have to start small and they have to grow their use of social media.. The press release for the study notes that Boynton Beach provided a good example of police force social media use. Though creating engagement was slow to start, the Boynton Beach police department is slowly building fans ...

THE Delhi High Court Thursday denied bail to Shahrukh Pathan, the man who was seen pointing a gun at a police officer during the Delhi riots on February 24, 2020.. A single-judge bench of Justice Suresh Kait observed that his picture, wielding a gun towards a police officer, spoke volumes about his involvement.. The role attributed to the petitioner is not confined to participation in the mob of rioters but of heading the large crowd, holding a pistol in (his) hand and releasing open fire shots. The video clipping and pictures played before this court have shaken the conscience of this court how petitioner could take law and order in his hands, Justice Kait said.. The court was ruling on an appeal filed by Pathan, challenging the order of the trial court rejecting his bail plea.. Affirming the order of the lower court, the high court said the trial court had rightly held that the petitioner had participated in riots..
