This article is about a breed of horse. See also Wielkopolska (region of Poland) and Wielkopolska National Park. The Wielkopolski is a breed of horse that was originated in Central and Western Poland in 1964, and is occasionally known as Mazursko-Poznanski. Its name derives from Wielkopolska ("Great Poland"), a region in west central Poland centred on Poznań. The Wielkopolski was developed by crossing two now extinct Polish breeds, the Pozan and the Mazury, so it is also referred to as the Mazursko-Poznanski. The Pozan or Poznan horse was developed in Poland. This breed was extremely rare, and was bred at the studs at Posadowo, Racot, and Gogolewo. The Pozan was a mixture of Arabian, Thoroughbred, Trakehner, and Hanoverian bloodlines. It was a middleweight farm horse, very versatile, used for riding and agricultural work. The Mazury, also known as the Masuren was developed in Poland as a riding horse. It mainly stemmed from the Trakehner breed and when crossed with the Pozan went on to develop ...

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-death among women in Poland. The known high-risk mutations account for 25% of familial aggregation cases and 5% of total breast cancer predisposition. Genome-wide association studies have identified a number of common low-penetrance genetic variants, but their contribution to disease risk differs between populations. To verify selected associations with breast cancer susceptibility among Polish women, the replication study was performed, included 1424 women with breast cancer and 1788 healthy persons. Sixteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays. Allele frequency differences were tested using chi2-test implemented in PLINK v1.07 and Cochran-Armitage trend test was performed using R software. Significant differences (Bonferroni corrected p-valuecor ≤ 0.0197) in the frequency of alleles distribution between all cancer and control subjects were observed for four

The automobile industry in Poland makes up a sizeable part of the Polish economy, accounting for about 11% of Polands industrial production. Poland is one of the largest producer of light vehicles (passenger cars) in Central and Eastern Europe. As of 2013 Poland was the 23rd largest automaker in the world. The first Polish company that produced automobile vehicles, Ursus, was established in 1893, and became known for a line of tractors produced since 1922. After Poland regained independence in the aftermath of World War I, Polish automotive industry produced a number of light military vehicles, such as armored cars tankettes and light tanks (7TP being the most advanced model). Civilian automotive production also existed, with the Centralne Warsztaty Samochodowe (later, Państwowe Zakłady Inżynieryjne) being the most notable company. Nonetheless, compared to more industrialized countries in the Western Europe, interwar Poland is seen as having rather limited auto producing capacities before ...

In 1939-45, my Polish family from eastern Poland was deported by Soviets to Siberia. My family is Roman Catholic and many have not heard of their plight. Many lost their lives in Katyn and these groups of families have not had the freedom to speak. With Poland at last free in 1989, stories can be told. This site is dedicated to the victims that could not speak. Many have heard of the Jewish Holocaust but what they did not hear is of silenced ones that were not Jewish. Now after 68 years it is as if our victims have just woke up from a very long absence. Documents are starting to surface that were missing and accountability in the form of movies, written material and most important eyewitness accounts. Between communist not allowing Poland to speak and Polish families spread to all corner of the world it worked. Families from other countrys are now in search of relatives, graves and family documentation that before now could not be located. This group is for all victims of all generations.
Poland is a country in Central Europe. In the early Middle Ages, Polands small principalities and townships were subjugated by successive waves of invaders, such as Germans, Balts and Mongols. In the mid-1500s, united Poland was the largest and perhaps most powerful European state. However, during the Partitions of Poland (1772-1918), the nation was divided into three different parts, under the control of the empires of Russia, Prussia, and Austria.. Poland was restored as a state in 1918, but lost again its independence during the Second World War, when it was occupied by Nazi Germany, and becoming a communist satellite state of the Soviet Union after the war. Poland acquired new territories on the west, which previously belonged to Germany, but lost to the Soviet Union its eastern territories. From the 1950s onward, the communist authorities brutally suppressed the traditional intermediate bodies between municipalities and regions. Regions and local authorities were deprived from all ...
Kraków (also spelled Cracow), the former capital of Poland, is located 180 miles south of the present capital of Warsaw. It is one of Polands largest (pop. 780,000), most historic and most beautiful cities.. In addition to its rich medieval history centering around Polish royalty, Krakow was home to two famous 20th-century personages: Oskar Schindler of Schlinders List fame and the future Pope John Paul II, who lived here for 40 years as a priest and later as Archbishop of Krakow. One of few Polish cities to escape major devastation by the Nazis during World War II, todays Krakow is renowned for its beauty by Poles (it is the most popular domestic tourist destination) and foreigners alike. It has become an essential stop on the main Central European tourism axis that includes Vienna, Budapest, and Prague. UNESCO designated the city a World Heritage Site in 1978 for its many historic buildings, which include numerous old churches full of religious art and no less than seven historic ...

Lower extremity defects in healthy children raises interest of researchers as confirmed by numerous published original and review articles. The relationship between lower extremity postural defects and body mass are unclear as published data are inconclusive. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to analyse the prevalence of lower extremity defects in a large group of 8- to 12-year-old children; and further to assess the probability of defects associated with values of body mass variables. The study included prospective anthropometric measurements data of 6992 children (3476 boys and 3516 girls) from Gdansk (Northern Poland). Standard screening test used in Poland for assessment of lower limb defects were used (intermalleolar or intercondylar distance for knee alignment, linear vertical compass for valgus heel, computer podoscope or classical footprint and measuring the Sztriter-Godunow index for flatfeet). Body mass was assessed with local centile charts and IOTF cutoffs. Prevalence of

Project Instructions This collection contains records from Krakow, including questionnaires of Jews who applied for personal ID cards, household member lists, indexes, resettlement cards, and residence requests. The German army occupied Krakow in the first week of September 1939. In May 1940 the Germans began to expel Jews from Krakow to the neighboring countryside and required them to report for forced labor by October 1940. By March 1941, the SS and police had expelled more than 55,000 Jews, and about 15,000 Jews remained in Krakow. In early March 1941, German officials ordered the establishment of a ghetto located in the south of Krakow. Between 15,000 and 20,000 Jews lived within the ghetto boundaries. The SS and police liquidated the Krakow ghetto on March 13-14, 1943, fulfilling Himmlers order in October 1942 to complete the murder of Jews residing in the Generalgouvernement, incarcerating those whose labor was still required in forced-labor camps. The records are primarily in German. ...
Temperature estimates are key to understanding the crystallization of pyrometallurgical slags. To date, temperature approximations have been based mainly on phase diagrams; these give approximate data only. Geothermometers (e.g., phase - whole-rock composition) applied in this study give much more accurate, focused results that are in agreement with historical data. Pyrometallurgical slags related to zinc extraction in Upper Silesia, southern Poland, date back to the 19th century. Thus, there is a great variety of slag textures and compositions reflecting changes in technological processes ranging from the primitive "Silesian method" to more advanced techniques including calcination and precise dosages of coal/coke and add-ons. Slag samples were collected at three localities with known smelting histories: Piekary Śląskie, Katowice and Ruda Śląska. The analysed material is composed of high-temperature phases among which oxides, silicates and aluminosilicates dominate. The chemical composition ...
Tworzeckis timing to explore the formation of political parties in Poland was good. In the fall of 1989, just as the communist regime in Poland was falling, he entered the graduate program at the University of Toronto. And, he was already familiar with Poland. In 1981 when he was 15 years old, he had emigrated with his parents from his hometown of Warsaw, Poland, to Canada shortly before military rule was instituted. It seemed like an amazing opportunity to do research when each new event was a historic landmark, he said of his dissertation topic ...

Social and economic transformations in Poland had as one of the consequences the fact that rural areas faced a number of difficulties and challenges. In connection with the political system transformation and Polands accession to the European Union, problems appeared, concerning mainly the issues of employment and the populations income sources. The issues become yet more significant in the areas of agricultural and farming traditions, i.e. in Lublin Province (Voivod-ship), where the percentages of rural population and of population employed in agriculture are high and exceed 50%. The backwardness of this region calls for profound reforms, in which well-educated inhabitants, aid funds or local leaders may become the stimulating factors. The paper presents the current condition and the directions of development of the key industry of the commune (gmina) of Uscimow. The paper deals with a number of problems which, in particular, include a difficult demographic situation, investments in agriculture and

Downloadable! This publication is a non-technical report prepared for Polish Ministry of Economy and Labor. The main goal is to present a comprehensive statistical and econometric analysis of employment, unemployment and participation in Poland in the period 1998-2004 and confront Polish experiences with international empirical and theoretical studies in labor economics. Also the qualitative survey of institutional background of labor market in Poland is conducted. We complement our research with some policy prescriptions. At the moment Poland exhibits the highest unemployment rate in OECD and one of the lowest employment and participation rates. We begin with a detailed analysis of the reasons of the rapid decrease of employment and increase of unemployment in 1998- 1999 and its later persistence. We find that the supply-side characteristics and sectoral structure of the economy significantly influenced the strength and the durability of the effects of the Russian crisis of 1998 and of the adverse

The Polish National Stroke Prevention and Treatment Registry was focused on in-hospital care delivery, and we found that there are significant differences among institutions participating in the registry. First, there are differences in time from onset of stroke symptoms to admission. Although many of the patients (42%) were admitted within 6 hours, 35% of patients were admitted after 6 and before 24 hours from symptom onset. Improving organization of local emergency transport and awareness of stroke symptoms among the patients could potentially reduce the delay before admission. It is important because early hospitalization allows monitoring of vital functions and treating complications, which may improve outcome.13-15 The present data from the Polish National Stroke Prevention and Treatment Registry were collected before recombinant tissue plasminogen activator treatment was established in Poland. Recommended onset to door time is 1 hour maximum, which is also the average time from onset to ...

This week, Ukrainian media reported that Warsaw is in the process of reviewing its former immigration policy, including its position vis-à-vis Ukrainian economic migrants. Saying that the 2012 document on migration policy "did not meet the challenges facing [Poland]," Internal Affairs Minister Mariusz Blaszczak explained that these challenges include both the broader EU-wide refugee crisis, and the issue of Ukrainian economic migrants to Poland. Accordingly, the government has annulled the 2012 document, on the recommendation of the Ministry.. Deputy Internal Affairs Minister Jakub Skiba expanded further, saying that the old document made it impossible for Warsaw to adequately respond to the "immigration crisis and economic migration from Ukraine." The state would have to separate refugees and economic migrants, and change its policy toward economic migrants from Polands eastern neighbor, he said.. Warsaw will now devise a new strategy - one that takes into account both of these factors. The ...

Setting up the detachment, an idea agreed to in principle nearly two years ago by President Barack Obama and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, is only the first step.. The Lysogory Unit, the Malopolska Massif and the Upper Silesian Massif in southern Poland are parts of a mosaic of contrasting crustal fragments separating the old Precambrian crust of the East European Platform (EEP) from the Phanerozoic mobile belts of western Europe. The geological histories of these blocks are markedly different. They have been regarded as integral parts of the palaeocontinent of Baltica (that is, the EEP), mostly because of presence of fossils typical for the Baltic realm, although geophysical and geological data and some faunal elements rather suggest linkages to the Peri-Gondwana plates. To provide additional constraints for the plate tectonic affinity of these blocks detrital muscovite grains extracted from Cambrian and Devonian clastic rocks were dated by the K-Ar method. The K-Ar cooling ages show a very complex provenance pattern for clastic material in Cambrian time. Combined with the biogeographical constraints, the new provenance data apparently show that the ...

Polands history as a state began near the middle of the 10th century. By the mid-16th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ruled a vast tract of land in Central and Eastern Europe. During the 18th century, internal disorders weakened the nation, and in a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland among themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force with over 10 million members. Free elections in 1989 and 1990 won Solidarity control of the parliament and the presidency, bringing the communist era to a close. The NPM1 gene encodes nucleophosmin, a protein involved in multiple cell functions and carcinogenesis. Mutation of the NPM1 gene, causing delocalization of the protein, is the most frequent genetic lesion in acute myeloid leukemia (AML); it is considered a founder event in AML pathogenesis and serves as a favorable prognostic marker. Moreover, in solid tumors and some leukemia cell lines, overexpression of the NPM1 gene is commonly observed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a new method for the detection of NPM1 mutations and the simultaneous analysis of copy number alterations (CNAs), which may underlie NPM1 gene expression deregulation. To address both of the issues, we applied a strategy based on multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). A designed NPM1mut+ assay enables the detection of three of the most frequent NPM1 mutations: A, B and D. The accuracy of the assay was tested using a group of 83 samples from Polish patients with AML and other ...

As a result of this recent interest, more wristguards, both the broader four-holed and the oblong-narrow two-holed, are now known from the Aegean than from the whole of Italy, for example. Whilst the Cretan and Trojan specimens cannot be attributed to a specific period within the wider Early and Middle Bronze Age, the five wristguards from Lerna in the Argolid and the three plates from Kolonna on Aegina come from secure contexts (Ramstorf 2008). They almost all date to Early Helladic III levels (as does the pottery evidence from Olympia), thus after 2200 BC in absolute terms. This makes them late Beaker, as compared to the central and western European examples. The best explanation for the relatively late appearance of these Aegean wristguards, and other Bell Beaker related finds, lies with further Adriatic pottery of the Dalmatian Cetina [culture] that also reached the Peloponnese in the later third millennium BC. Joseph Maran has described their background and context in detail (e.g., 1998), ...

The incidence of AD has been increasing steadily and it is estimated that presently it afflicts over 30% of the population. The onset of symptoms is in the first year of life in approximately 50% of AD cases and before 5 years of age in almost 90% [1, 2]. Epidemiological data indicate differences in AD prevalence between countries. According to the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood - Phase One (ISAAC), among children aged 6-7 and 13-14 years, AD was the most prevalent in Australia, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia (20%) and the least prevalent in China (2%) [6, 7]. The European Community Respiratory Health Survey II (ECRHS II), conducted among 20-44-year-olds in 25 European centres and Portland in the United States, estimated the lowest prevalence rate in Switzerland (2.2%) and the highest rate in Estonia (17.6%) [8]. At present, the worldwide prevalence of AD is estimated at 15-20% among children and 1-3% in adults [9, 10]. Although AD is considereda childhood disease, ...

OBJECTIVES: We investigate trends in the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults at all ages in two time points 9 years apart in two neighbouring rural populations and examine social and respiratory health determinants of quitting smoking. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional study. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in the same rural area of lower Silesia in Poland in 2003 and 2012. A total of 1328 (91% of adult eligible individuals) in 2003 and 1449 (92% of eligible) in 2012 adult inhabitants were surveyed, 908 people (560 villagers and 348 town inhabitants) participated in both surveys. Participants completed a questionnaire on smoking behaviour, education level and respiratory diseases. RESULTS: Current smoking was higher in the villages than the town, among men than women and those with a middle level of education. The prevalence of current smokers decreased over time, although this decline was much more pronounced in the town than in the villages (30.2% vs 23% and ...

By Mark Hennessy and Jamie Smyth in Brussels. The European Court of Human Rights has found Poland guilty of a breach of human rights in an abortion case that could have implications for Ireland.. Three Irish women have taken a case to the court that has similarities with the Polish case. The court may begin hearing the Irish case, lodged in 2005, later this year.. The Polish case concerned Alicja Tysiac, a woman who was told by three doctors that her eyesight could suffer if she proceeded with a pregnancy. However, all three doctors declined to certify Ms Tysiac for an abortion.. They refused, according to the judgment, because they said there was not a certainty that her retina would detach during childbirth, even though they agreed that pregnancy and delivery constituted a risk to her eyesight. In the event, Ms Tysiacs eyesight suffered a steep decline. She is no longer able to see farther than 1.5 metres and is classified as significantly disabled.. Abortion is legal in Poland in ...

Polish sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposits associated with Zechstein sediments are one of the country’s most valuable natural resources and the basis for its copper industry. The paper presents the history of their research and current exploration. Although documented deposits and their identified resources are described and characterized, much attention is paid to areas located outside of them, including those where geological exploration is currently underway. The gradual depletion of shallow Cu–Ag reserves in the Lubin-Sieroszowice district and elsewhere in the world requires exploration for deeper-seated deposits. To expand resources, time span and scale of copper production in Poland, exploration and definition of new prospects is of great importance. Thirty-five prospective areas with hypothetical and speculative resources have been delineated in SW Poland, including the most prospective areas adjacent to the Cu–Ag Lubin-Sieroszowice deposit. The paper also focuses on

In 2004, Poland joined the European Union. This access means the possibility of taking advantage of European Union Structural Funds. Apart from this the structural funds play another important role. The popularity of the idea of European integration in countries like Poland depends largely on the effectiveness of this financial support, which theoretically should lead to economic and social development on different levels (local, regional, national, and even continental). The main problem of relying on EU funds is their unequal availability, which is limited, for example, because of the granting principles ...
