Folk Coll 11 is Utah State Universitys cowboy poetry collection. The collection, originally created by a generation donation by the L. J. and Mary Skaggs Foundation, includes books gathered during a fieldwork project in the early 1980s to document cowboy poetry in the U.S. west (see Folk Coll 11f). Conveying emotions in spoken poetry may be based on a poems semantic content and/or on emotional prosody, i.e., on acoustic features above single speech sounds. However, hypotheses of more direct sound-emotion relations in poetry, such as those based on the frequency of occurrence of certain phonemes, have not withstood empirical (re)testing. Therefore, we investigated sound-emotion associations based on prosodic features as a potential alternative route for the, at least partially, non-semantic expression and perception of emotions in poetry. We first conducted a pre-study designed to validate relevant parameters of joy- and sadness-supporting prosody in the recitation, i.e. acoustic production, of poetry. Sarah Kirsch is a distinguished German poet whose work is almost unknown in Britain. She was born in 1935 and lived and worked until 1977 in what was then the DDR. In 1976 she had signed, together with eleven other leading artists, a petition asking the East German government to reconsider the Ausbürgerung of Wolf Biermann who had become too outspoken for the regime. (During a concert tour in West Germany, Biermann was stripped of his DDR citizenship and forbidden to return.) I was born in Stavanger in 1969, and my current residence is in Nissedal, Telemark, Norway. After attending the Writers Academy in Bø 1988, I had my debut as a poet with the book In the green-shadows in 1990. I have also been the assistant of photographer Dag Alveng from late 1990 to winter 91/92, and my first art show as a photographer at Gallery Gahn in Oslo in 1992. I have published 11 collections of poetry, 7 novels, and translated Michael Palmers poetry, and several novels. I am a member of The Norwegian Writers Union. I am also a member of the photographical movement GFSNT, and The Union of Free Photographers associated with The Organization of Norwegian Artists. One of the big reasons I decided I had to go to Tucson was because I wanted to see CA Conrad. And not in some huge corporate hotel conference setting with 60,000 other people. The first time I heard CA, a friend, Lester Robles (who has some gorgeous poems on Dusies Issue 14), read his poetry to me out loud in San Diego. And Id read his poetry since then out loud to friends. Id watched online videos. And even taught his (soma)tic exercises in a community based workshop in Houston, called Copy Paste in 2011.. Yasser Arafat is Dead is a poetry chapbook published by the notable Ottawa press, above/ground, and it features the work of Damian Lopes, Barries own Poet Laureate. Its the first chapbook hes published in 15 years and, understandably, theres a lot of ground covered here: lost relationships, cultural heritage, bloodlines and borders.. In terms of physical composition, there arent any frills. Its simple, but clean looking: 16 poems printed on regular white paper, except for a page of blue for the title and back copyright pages. And save for the concrete poem on the front cover, there arent any illustrations. Its a purist poetry chapbook, more or less.. But in terms of convention, the poetry itself isnt quite so pure. A friend, who is experiencing the late effects of polio, designed his own advanced college degree program. He called it Creating Wellness through Poetry. The act of writing out his feelings by focusing on God and His creation helped him achieve better mental health.. Another friend wrote a poem called Saved by a Gibson about a discarded guitar later found by a streetperson whose life was restored.. Saving sanity through poetry sounds like a motto from an old 1950s TV program. Nevertheless, I believe it has often saved me. Reading beautiful thoughts of another poet or jotting down my own, even during pain, helps me. Reading about someone else who had the same feelings helps me realize I am not alone..
