Pneumocephalus after craniotomy will absorb within four weeks, but when air causes pressure affects it is a tension pneumocephalus, which may affect consciousness and requires immediate intervention. Tension pneumocephalus causing cerebral sinus thrombosis is not known in the literature. We report a case of tension pneumocephalus causing diabetes insipidus associated with cerebral sinus thrombosis.
Pneumocephalus is the presence of air or gas within the cranial cavity. It is usually associated with disruption of the skull: after head and facial trauma, tumors of the skull base, after neurosurgery or otorhinolaryngology, and rarely, spontaneously. Pneumocephalus can occur in scuba diving, but is very rare in this context. If there is a valve mechanism which allows air to enter the skull but prevents it from escaping, a tension pneumocephalus can occur (similar to what can happen in a tension pneumothorax). CT scans of patients with a tension pneumocephalus typically show air that compresses the frontal lobes of the brain, which results in a tented appearance of the brain in the skull known as the Mount Fuji sign. The name is derived from the resemblance of the brain to Mount Fuji in Japan, a volcano known for its symmetrical cone. In typical cases, there is a symmetrical depression near the midline (such as the crater of a volcano), due to intact bridging veins. Its occurrence seems to be ...
A 5 day old full term male infant admitted with a two day history of fever, irritability, and convulsions was diagnosed as having Enterobacter cloacae septicaemia and meningitis. A computed tomography (CT) brain scan on admission showed cerebral oedema and areas of low density signals near the occipital horns of the lateral ventricles. A repeat CT scan five days after admission (fig 1) revealed the presence of diffuse pneumocephalus. T1 weighted magnetic resonance images of the brain three days later (fig 2), as well as a CT scan two weeks after admission, showed a pronounced interval increase in the collection of intracranial air. The baby died from multiorgan failure 18 days after admission. ...
Ankara Numune Hastanesi 1. Beyin Cerrahi Kliniği 44 cases of pneumocephalus diagnosed by CT are presented. CT scans revealed intracranial single air bubbles or air pockets in 39 patients (88.6 %). The remaining 5 patients had pneumatoceles (11.3 %). Head trauma is the most common cause of pneumocephalus (77.3 %). Traumatic pneumocephalus is assodated with rhinorrhea and otorrhea in 73.5 % of cases and with laterobasal and frontobasallineer fractures in 67.7 % of cases. The mortality of the pneumocephalus secondary to head trauma generally depends on additional pathological conditions like subdural. epidural. intracerebral hematomas or diffuse brain lesions. CT scan has an unique value in detecting very small amount of intracranial air. Anahtar Kelimeler : CT scans, Head trauma, Pneumocephalus ...

Pneumocephalus, pneumoencephalus, intracranial pneumatocele or aerocele are all terms for air in the head, where it is not meant to be. It can be a normal consequence of brain surgery and is usually not a major thing, except were there is too much air, or when it ends up under tension. This condition has never come up in the exam until a relatively recent radiology question (Question 14.2 from the first paper of 2016). The college presented us with a CT slice depicting the classical Mount Fuji sign, in a patient who has lost consciousness following a C5-6 epidural abscess drainage.
We present a rare fast-growing giant pneumatocele in a patient presenting with suspected pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) infection and bilateral pneumothoraces as a primary manifestation of AIDS (HIV viral loading test: 628 000 copies/ml). Tube thoracostomies were performed and complicated with enduring air leakage and subcutaneous emphysema. Follow-up chest x-rays showed an enlarging radiolucency over the left upper lung field that was interpreted as massive pneumothorax with passive lung atelectasis. Positive ventilation was also applied due to disease progression (The CD4+ T-lymphocyte count was 18/cu mm). Repeated chest CT scans disclosed a newly formed giant bullous-liked lesion in the left upper lung field (figure 1). Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for unroofing the cystic lesion (pneumatocele) and pleurodesis successfully allowed the patient to wean from the ventilator and be discharged uneventfully (figure 2).. ...

Penetrating injury with wooden object (branch?) extending from the right lateral nasal wall, through the nasal septum and the left medial orbital wall. The tip passes through the left orbital roof and has entered the anterior cranial fossa. Multiple small locules of intracranial gas are identified. There is disruption of the medial and superior recti of the left orbit. The optic nerve appears to be spared. Injury to the ophthalmic artery and superior ophthalmic vein cannot be excluded, but there is only minor intraorbital haematoma/stranding.. The penetrating injury abuts the inferior left frontal lobe. No intraparenchymal haemorrhage identified. Extra-axial pneumocephalus noted. Normal grey-white matter insertion is maintained. No evidence of acute ischaemia. No hydrocephalus or midline shift. ...
According to the recall notice, the devices were recalled because the patient line tubing can be separated from the patient line connectors; this is more likely occur during frequent handling and include connections were injections or sampling occur often. The notice stated that The device failure may result in air within the skull (pneumocephalus), infection (such as meningitis, ventriculitis, encephalitis) and over/under drainage of the CSF that may contribute to serious adverse health consequences, including death.. The recalled systems were manufactured between March 15, 2013 and February 28, 2014. They were distributed between April 10, 2013 and May 19, 2014. An Urgent Device Recall letter was sent out to customers last month.. Effects of hyperbaric oxygenation therapy on symptomatic pneumocephalus Wellingson Silva Paiva, Almir Ferreira de Andrade, Eberval Gadelha Figueiredo, Robson Luis Amorim, Marcelo Prudente, Manoel Jacobsen Teixeira Division of Neurosurgery, University of São Paulo Medical School, São Paulo, Brazil Background: Pneumocephalus (PNC) is defined as a pathological collection of gas within the cranial cavity. The authors studied the effects of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO2) therapy on a group of patients with PNC, comparing them with a control group to determine the relative impact on pneumocephalus volume, clinical symptoms, and duration of hospitalization. Methods: Twenty-four patients with PNC treated at our hospital were consecutively studied. These patients were divided into a treated group (n=13) and a control group (n=11). Thirteen patients (treated group) were treated with HBO2 therapy sessions in a monoplace hyperbaric chamber at 2.5 atmospheres with 100% oxygen concentration. The control

Prof. Sean Keogh, a retrieval physician, professor of paramedic science at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and CEO at Australian Air Medical in Queensland, suggested that TBI patients should be flown at sea level pressure to avoid an increase in ICP: Intracranial air is not an absolute contraindication to flying, and there is little evidence that it has ever caused a temporary or permanent neurological decline during air transport, but computer modelling suggests it may increase ICP as cabin pressure decreases. It seems sensible to fly all of these patients in a sea level cabin if possible. Arizona, US-based Angel MedFlight also subscribes to this view, as Kimberly Halloran, vice-president of business development explained: Altitude can increase ICP, which can be detrimental for patients with brain injuries. To reduce this risk, [we] might fly at a lower altitude than a standard flight, adjust interior cabin pressure, or administer medication to reduce ICP. ...
Dogliottis principle is a principle in epidural anaesthesia first described by Professor Achille Mario Dogliotti in 1933. It is a method for the identification of the epidural space, a potential space. As a needle is advanced through the ligamentum flavum, to the epidural space, with constant pressure applied to the piston of a syringe, loss of resistance occurs once the needle enters the epidural space due to the change in pressure. The identification of this space, allows subsequent administration of epidural anaesthesia, a technique used primarily for analgesia during childbirth. This technique remains in use at present[update], and is commonly referred to the loss of resistance to saline technique (LORS) or its variation, the loss of resistance to air technique (LORA). These use, respectively, saline or air to identify the epidural space. The LORS technique is generally favoured due to the increased complication risk with the LORA technique such as pneumocephalus or air embolism. Epidural ...

A 59 year old man was admitted to our cardiac surgical intensive care unit after a third operation on the mitral and aortic valves. His previous operations had been six months before. All three surgeries were done via a median sternotomy, and the left pleural space was never opened during the operations.. The postoperative recovery was initially uneventful. The day after surgery the patient was extubated, and the chest drains removed. The next day, however, we noticed a reduced air entry in the left lower zone of the chest, and a chest x ray showed some haziness in the left lower zone, consistent with a collection of fluid in the left pleural space. … ...

Performance, ergonomic reliability, and ease of maintenance make this regulator a product for true diving professionals. Instructors, guides, dive operators, and researchers will find the answer they need in the Master Ellipse. The first stage stands out from the range of Cressi balanced diaphragm regulators because the mechanism is arranged on an axis perpendicular to the axis of air entry, creating a "T" shape. The advantages of this particular design include better arrangement of the hoses and less space occupied (especially in SC versions for cold water). What's more, this makes it remarkably easy to inspect and access the mechanism to improve maintenance and calibration operations, it uses a larger, high-efficiency conical filter, and the valves are arranged more easily on the tank.
The inventory menus in Mass Effect were a mess. Finding something specific required you to scroll past several pages of items that took up too much screen space while managing to avoid being descriptive.. Thankfully, Mass Effect 2 has gone back to the drawing board to come up with a much more elegant solution. When you bring up the inventory menu, you will not be presented with a cluttered list of items, but a layout of all the letters in the alphabet (minus S) and a random series of prime numbers.. Simply select a letter or number and you will be presented with the items whose serial numbers begin with your selection. Keep in mind that all health-replenishing items have unique, randomized serials ...
SmashPad: BioWare and Mass Effect 3 have seen their fair share of controversy over the last few months. From fans reacting negatively to the ending of the series to the creators of BioWare reportedly leaving the company because of the fans outcries, Mass Effect 3 seemed to be stuck in a perpetual loop of disappointment. But with bad press comes positive changes, as BioWare released an enhanced ending to appease fans (mostly) and they are still working hard on enhancing the adventures of Shepard and his crew. The latest, Leviathan, adds some neat backstory to the already dynamic ending, but the combat leaves more to be desired. ...

ABUABARA, Allan. Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea: diagnosis and management. Med. oral patol. oral cir.bucal (Internet) [online]. 2007, vol.12, n.5, pp.397-400. ISSN 1698-6946.. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea occurs when there is a fistula between the dura and the skull base and discharge of CSF from the nose. CSF rhinorrhea or liquorrhoea commonly occurs following head trauma (fronto-basal skull fractures), as a result of intracranial surgery, or destruction lesions. A spinal fluid leak from the intracranial space to the nasal respiratory tract is potentially very serious because of the risk of an ascending infection which could produce fulminant meningitis. This article reviewed the causes, diagnosis and treatment of CSF leakage. A PUBMED search of the National Library of Medicine was conducted. CSF leak most commonly occurs following trauma and the majority of cases presenting within the first three months. CSF rhinorrhoea have significantly greater incidence of periorbital haematoma. ...

It is classified as extradural (epidural) or intradural (subdural or subarachnoid) according to the location where it is found. Nontraumatic, traumatic, and iatrogenic causes have been attributed to its occurrence. Traumatic pneumorrhachis is very rare and rarely seen in children. A 6-month-old previously healthy boy presents to the local emergency department with a 1-week history of progressive lethargy, irritability, and anorexia. Two days before presentation he developed an unusual breathing pattern and worsening respiratory distress, and he had a fever of 101.3°F (38.5°C). There was no rhinorrhea, coryza, cough, vomiting, or diarrhea.. He appears unwell, with respiratory distress, tachypnea, and grunting. His blood pressure is 80/45 mm Hg, heart rate is 200 beats/min, respiratory rate is 60 breaths/min, and oxygen saturation is 77% in room air. He is afebrile. There is significantly decreased air entry bilaterally, most impressively over the right lung field. His neurologic examination reveals a mild right-sided ptosis. Although he moves both arms normally, there is a noticeable paucity of movements in his lower limbs, with decreased tone in both legs. The remainder of his examination findings are normal.. Charcoal is a valuable fuel that reaches a higher temperature than the very wood its made from. Ive made some before, but with supplies running low due to furnace experiments, I decided to make another large batch of charcoal in a mound. I stacked the wood into a roughly conical shape (about 1 m wide and 75 cm high) and then built a thick wall of mud around the heap (this took 6 hours). Eight air entries were made in the base of the mound and one air exit hole was left at the top of the mound to allow the volatile components of the wood to escape while creating a natural draft to keep everything burning. ...

A quick listen to the chest revealed clear & equal air entry and o2 saturations were in the high 90s. Leaning forward eased the chest pain but when asked to take a deep breath or lay back caused the pain to get worse. Now for the 12 lead. Abnormal to say the least. There was ST elevation (sign of a heart attack) and alot of it. But there were clues that lead me to believe that this was not a heart attack. The type of pain was wrong for a start. The ST elevation was wide spread (showing in leads II, II, AVF, v2,v3,v4,v5,v6) and saddle backed. There was also very slight reciprocal changes in I & AVL. My provisional working diagnosis was Pericarditis (an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart). There are many causes but is usually caused by some form of infection. RAM MAGNUMS3666d ago Basically, Mass Effect is as Great as you make it. IF you suck the story will suck. If you cant kill the enemy clean you have the wrong loadout. If you are missing the point you have not done any codex homework. If you have no sence of direction you are lost. If you didnt pace yourself and has burned yourself out trying to beat the in one sitting for 20+ hours we cannot believe you because your judgement has been impaired due to lack of sleep. Mass effect has lived up to the hype. It was exactly as advertised. Sci-Fi adventure, No desicion is easy, Galactic political drama. In that aspect, it seems any score less than a 9 is from a burnout. Note that both of those tools use your Origin account and youll have to be online for this all to work. Readiness is meant to work via Origin, there is no way around it without improperly tampering with game files.. I personally recommend the Multiplayer though, its very fun and a fast way to build up readiness. Also not it is possible to get the best ending without increasing readiness, but you need to make near-perfect choices and complete pretty much everything possible in the game. A ME2 save import might even be required at that point, Im not sure about that.. ...
