Evaluation of the Anti-obesity Activity of Platycodon grandiflorum Root and Curcuma longa Root Fermented with Aspergillus oryzae Platycodon grandiflorum;Curcuma longa;fermentation;lipid accumulation;anti-obesity; In the present study, the phenolic compound level, antioxidant activity, and inhibition of lipid accumulation in Aspergillus oryzae-fermented water extracts of the Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) root and the Curcuma longa (CL) root were determined. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were decreased after fermentation. However, the flavonoid content of the fermented PG (FPG) was increased by 2.9-fold that of the PG before fermentation. In addition, the antioxidant activities were significantly decreased following fermentation. The potential anti-obesity activity was assessed by determining lipid accumulation and mRNA expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma ($PPAR{\gamma}$) in 3T3-L1 cells. Aspergillus
In this study, a method of metabolite profiling based on UPLC-QTOF/MS was developed to analyze Platycodon grandiflorum. In the optimal UPLC, various metabolites, including major platycosides, were separated well in 15 min. The metabolite extraction protocols were also optimized by selecting a solvent for use in the study, the ratio of solvent to sample and sonication time. This method was used to profile two different parts of P. grandiflorum, i.e., the roots of P. grandiflorum (PR) and the stems and leaves of P. grandiflorum (PS), in the positive and negative ion modes. As a result, PR and PS showed qualitatively and quantitatively different metabolite profiles. Furthermore, their metabolite compositions differed according to individual plant samples. These results indicate that the UPLC-QTOF/MS-based profiling method is a good tool to analyze various metabolites in P. grandiflorum. This metabolomics approach can also be applied to evaluate the overall quality of P. grandiflorum, as well as to

which I had not tried in my garden before. I bought it based on just the name alone: balloon flower. Intruiguing, eh? Its scientific name is no less wonderful: Platycodon grandiflores "fuji blue." Sounds like a cross between a platypus and oxycodone, with a crayola crayon tacked on the end ...

The most exotic Balloon Flower yet, Komachi resembles a mass of blue umbrellas seen from above, something like Renoirs famous painting Les Parapluies.
Best grown in light, medium moisture, organically rich, well-drained loams in full sun to part shade. Avoid wet or poorly-drained soils. Plants are easily grown from seed. Division and transplanting are possible but tricky because of the fragile, fleshy root systems of these plants, and it is probably best to leave plants undisturbed once established. Deadheading spent flowers generally prolongs the bloom period. New season plant stems emerge late in spring, so gardeners must be careful not to damage crowns by early cultivation (leaving old plant stems in place throughout winter to the point when the new growth first appears helps mark plant locations). Taller plants often need to be staked because of floppy stems. Consider cutting back plant stems by 1/2 in May to reduce plant height and possibly avoid staking ...
Since numerous flowers are borne on a single stem you have a choice. Either pick off individual spent flowers, or wait until they are all spent and clip off the entire stem. Im a hopeful gardener so I simply pick off the individual flowers just as the petals begin looking worn but before they fall off. If you dont pinch the faded flower off then, a seed pod will form which looks very similar to an unopened flower bud. The purpose of deadheading is to remove spent flowers before the plant spends energy developing seeds (the hard green pod you describe). Therein my hope lies: the plant will redirect its energy into producing more flowers rather than developing seeds ...

As you may have figured out already, blue is one of my favorite colors, even if the "blue" of flowers is more or less purple. I finally found a decent bloom on my camellia this year! Most are tinged with brown spots or brown edges. The sweet woodruff is one of those plants that can get a little aggressive in the growth department, but it makes a lovely ground cover for shady areas. I love the interesting spring growth on columbine and balloon flower. Thanks for stopping by ...

Sideroxylon grandiflorum, known as tambalacoque or dodo tree, is a long-lived tree in the family Sapotaceae, endemic to Mauritius. It is valued for its timber. The Sideroxylon grandiflorum fruit is analogous to the peach. They are both termed drupes because both have a hard endocarp, or pit, surrounding the seed, with the endocarp naturally splitting along a fracture line during germination. In 1973, it was thought that this species was dying out. There were supposedly only 13 specimens left, all estimated to be about 300 years old. The true age could not be determined because tambalacoque has no growth rings. Stanley Temple hypothesized that the dodo, which became extinct in the 17th century, ate tambalacoque fruits, and only by passing through the digestive tract of the dodo could the seeds germinate. Temple (1977) force-fed seventeen tambalacoque fruits to wild turkeys. Seven of the fruits were crushed by the birds gizzard. The remaining ten were either regurgitated or passed with the birds ...
In order to explore the compatible principles of Xiebai decoction family, formulae from ancient and modern Xiebai decoction family were collected and sorted in this study. The importance of lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) as a cut flower has increased over recent decades. Eustoma is a perennial herbaceous genus of the family Gentianaceae. The genus is represented by three species, whose distribution is restricted from the southern United States to Central America, including the Caribbean islands. E. grandiflorum is a half-hardy perennial that grows up to 60 cm tall, and its flower color ranges from white to purple. However, due to indirect selection, the plantlets have a tendency to rosette (heat-induced resting stage) if they are exposed to temperatures above 25°C. In order to generate heat-tolerant cultivars and reduce the rosette problem, a breeding program was conducted and interspecific crosses between E. grandiflorum and Eustoma exaltatum were performed. In its natural habitat, E. exaltatum grows at temperatures above 35°C during the summer. Hundreds of hybrids have been obtained in various generations: F1, BC1, S1 and S2. Two types of E. exaltatum were ...

The best North American modern firsthand account is as usual that by Samuel Thayer in his wonderful book Natures Garden. He notes that the species he uses most is woodlander Erythronium americanum, not documented as edible (only medicinal) by Moerman. He rates the early spring bulbs highly, tasting " like sweet corn or snow peas..crunchy, sweet and tender raw"…but he notes that they are small and it takes a lot of effort to pick a decent amount (he also notes that E. grandiflorum bulbs, a species that grows in alpine meadows, are bigger). Various early foraging authors in the 50s and 60s, including Euell Gibbons, note that the leaves, flower stalks, buds and flowers of americanum are eaten raw and cooked. Thayer is not fond of the leaves or flowers, however, saying that they are "best before unfurled…bitter aftertaste…worse after cooking", but he comments that others enjoy the taste. I havent noticed any bitterness the times Ive tried different species. Gibbons also mentions that white ...

Eustoma grandiflorum Griesb. Seed propagation (Tsukada et al. 1981) is the best method to start a crop although tissue culture (Semeniuk and Griesbach 1987) and rooting of cuttings (Roh et al. 1986a) are also possible. Seeds germinate within 15 days at 25°C. During the first 60 to 90 days after germination, temperatures above 25°C should be avoided to prevent heat stress. The optimum temperature is considered near 10° to 15°C. Seedlings should be transplanted before the stem elongates, and root disturbance should be minimized to prevent wilting when the plants show visible buds. More than 60 days of 16 hours of long days are required to accelerate flowering by about 15 to 25 days (Tsukada et al. 1981).. Most commercial cultivars are tall, cut flower types that require the application of growth retardants for pot plant production (Roh and Lawson 1984a, Tjia and Sheehan 1986). In the Florist and Nursery Crops Laboratory, genetic dwarf selections were obtained from tissue culture and multiplied ...

Epimedium grandiflorum arrived in Europe, in Antwerp, with Philipp Franz von Siebolds plant collection from Japan, in 1830 according to some reports. Actually, during his 8 years in Japan, Siebold sent three shipments with an unknown number of herbarium specimens to Leiden, Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp. The important thing is that among them there were 2 plants of Epimedium grandiflorum, one with white flowers, and one with pale-violet flowers. They were planted at the Ghent Botanical Garden. Unsurprisingly, the large spurred flowers received a lot of attention because the only species of Epimedium known at that time was E. alpinum, which has small flowers. The Japanese name of E. grandiflorum - ikariso, comes from: ikari - anchor and so- plant, the four long curved spurs of the flowers suggesting the four-claw anchor used by Japanese fishermen.. ...

Jasmine makes the ideal gift that a man can give to his wife. This is particularly so at the time of giving birth. A little Jasmine massaged onto the shoulders or inhaled in an aromastick will both help with the labour and relieve the mind of anxiety. This is important after the birth in preventing baby blues turning toward post natal depression. Jasmine is not a cheap oil. My own purchase of 1kg at a time would like the neroil and Rose Otto purchase a small car. However in pregnancy the oil is unequalled and it can be bought inexpensively in a 5% jojoba dilution. If you call the factory the oil can be mixed in an oil of your choice or supplied unmixed in 3ml quantity with an aromastick. Students can order in 1ml quantity (we have an even smaller bottle!). Always consult your midwife however many midwives have sought training in complementary therapies and aromatherapy in particular so are aware of Jasmines properties ...
