In the present study, we evaluated the effect of systemic administration of vitamin C on the healing of aneurysms embolized with platinum coils. Our results suggest that systemic vitamin C supplementation does not improve the long term histological healing of rabbit aneurysms following platinum coil embolization, as evidenced by lack of cellularity and fibrosis in the aneurysm cavity as well as dearth of neointimal coverage at the neck of the aneurysm. These negative results were found even though adequate levels of vitamin C were achieved in both test groups. Thus clinical trials of vitamin C to improve coil stability likely are not warranted.. A cross parametrization for the Fe-Pt interaction is proposed, which complements existing potentials for the constituents Fe and Pt. This FePt potential properly describes structural properties of ordered and disordered phases, surface energies, and the L10 to A1 transition temperature in bulk FePt. The potential is applied for examining the ordering behavior in small particles. Aim 1. (Primary Outcome) To test the hypothesis that HydroSoft coils lead to diminished rates of aneurysm recurrence relative to bare platinum coils. In order to test this hypothesis, we will compare recanalization or recurrence rates observed in this prospective registry of HydroSoft coils used as finishing coils to historical series of aneurysms treated with bare platinum coils. This registry is designed to achieve 80% power to detect a minimally clinically relevant difference in rates of recurrence between HydroSoft-treated aneurysms compared with bare platinum coils. This paper examined the local structural properties of Pt nanoparticles on SiO 2, TiO 2-SiO 2, and ZrO 2-SiO 2 supports to better understand the impact of oxide-support type on the performance of Pt-based catalysts. In situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements were taken for the Pt L3-edge in a temperature range from 300 to 700 K in He, H 2, and O 2 gas environments. The XAFS measurements demonstrated that Pt atoms were highly dispersed on TiO 2-SiO 2 and ZrO 2-SiO 2 forming pancake-shaped nanoparticles, whereas Pt atoms formed larger particles of hemispherical shapes on SiO 2 supports. Contrary to the SiO 2 case, the coordination numbers for Pt, Ti, and Zr around Pt atoms on the TiO 2-SiO 2 and ZrO 2-SiO 2 supports were nearly constant from 300 to 700 K under the different gas environments.
