1. Plasma volume, packed cell volume (PCV), blood volume, extracellular fluid volume (ECFV) and Evans blue disappearance rate were measured in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats and in weight-matched Wistar normotensive rats.. 2. Over the weight range studied (250-350 g), plasma and blood volumes were significantly lower in the spontaneously hypertensive rat. Extracellular fluid volumes were similar in the two groups. PCV arid Evans blue disappearance rates were significantly higher in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.. 3. Negative correlations were obtained between plasma volume and mean arterial pressure and between the plasma/interstitial fluid volume ratio and mean arterial pressure.. 4. the normal extracellular fluid volume and the lack of correlation with mean arterial pressure excludes volume expansion as a pressor mechanism during the established phase of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.. ...
The haematological module of the Athletes Biological Passport ABP has significantly impacted the prevalence of blood manipulations in elite sports. However, the ABP relies on a number of concentrationbased markers of erythropoiesis, such as haemoglobin concentration Hb, which are influenced by shifts in plasma volume PV. Fluctuations in PV...
SUMMARY Normal pregnancy involves many changes in maternal physiology, including alterations in hematologic parameters. These changes include expansion in maternal plasma volume. The increase in plasma volume is relatively larger than the increase in red cell mass resulting in a decrease in hemoglobin concentration. An increase in the levels of some plasma proteins alters the balance of coagulation and fibrinolysis. Worldwide, the predominant cause of anemia in pregnancy is iron deficiency. Fetal requirements for iron are met despite maternal deficiency, but maternal iron deficiency has a number of adverse consequences including an increased frequency of preterm delivery and low-birth-weight infants. Bleeding disorders in pregnancy are a common reason for hematologic consultation and evoke concern for both the mother and child. Life-threatening bleeding caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation is seen with some complications unique to pregnancy, including placental abruption, retained ...

Hemodilution of the plasma by more than 20% associated with priming cardiopulmonary bypass pumps, plasma volume expansion or other fluid administration therapies using certain solutions may cause clinically significant error on ionized calcium results. These errors are associated with solutions that do not match the ionic characteristics of plasma. To avoid these errors when hemodiluting by more than 20%, use physiologically balanced multi-electrolyte solutions containing low-mobility anions (e.g. Gluconate) such as Normosol-R (Abbott Laboratories), Plasma-Lyte-A (Baxter Healthcare oCrporation), and Isolyte-S (B Braun Medical) rather than solutions such as normal saline or ringers lactate.. ...

PREPARE TO PERFORM. PreLoad Hydration is ONLY for use before intense efforts, ultra-endurance events or exercise in hot conditions. Not for use during exercise. Osmo PreLoad Hydration is a hyper-hydrator developed based on peer-reviewed science to: - Increase performance during hot and intense efforts - Maximize sustained power - Reduce muscle fatigue Using Osmo Preload Hydration sets the body up for success during high intensity exercise. By boosting your sodium stores and plasma volume before you exercise, you maximize thermoregulation and your performance. Osmo Preload Hydration is a special application product developed for use before hot events, time trials, and high intensity efforts. Preload increases total body water and plasma volume, provides a buffer for lactic acid, and increases the cofactors needed for aerobic metabolism. This allows athletes to optimize their performance in hot conditions and during high intensity activity. For best results, we recommend drinking Preload the night ...
Previous studies have suggested a range of therapies for POTS, including mineralocorticoids, combined with increased salt and water intake to enhance plasma volume and use of adrenoceptor agonists such as minodrine however these agents often have side effects and may be ineffective in a significant number of patients. Exercise regimens offer little in the way of harm, and if ,as this research suggests, exercise offers significant benefits then perhaps it should be tried initially and potentially as an adjunct for all POTS patients ...

Introduction- Exercise-induced plasma volume (PV) expansion is typically associated with an increase in plasma albumin content. Increased hepatic albumin synthesis, a transcriptionally regulated process, is thought to contribute to the increase in albumin content. Objective- We tested the hypothesis that exercise training induces an increase in albumin gene expression in relationship to the increase in PV. Methods and Results- 40 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 245-350 grams were randomly assigned to one of four groups: cage control (CC); sham exercise 10 min/day at 48% VO2max (NE); continuous exercise training, 60 min /day at 72% VO2max (LI); and high intensity, intermittent exercise training, 8 bouts of 4 min at 98% VO2max followed by 5 min at 48% VO2max (HI). The training period lasted for two weeks with 12 training sessions with equalized training volumes in the exercise groups. 24 hours after the last training session the rats were anesthetized and a jugular catheter was placed for
Heat acclimation is associated with plasma volume (PV) expansion that occurs within the first week of exposure. However, prolonged effects on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) are unclear as intervention periods in previous studies have not allowed sufficient time for erythropoiesis to manifest. Therefore, Hbmass, intravascular volumes, and blood volume (BV)-regulating hormones were assessed with 5½ weeks of exercise-heat acclimation (HEAT) or matched training in cold conditions (CON) in 21 male cyclists [(mean ± SD) age: 38 ± 9 years, body weight: 80.4 ± 7.9 kg, VO2peak: 59.1 ± 5.2 ml/min/kg]. HEAT (n = 12) consisted of 1 h cycling at 60% VO2peak in 40°C for 5 days/week in addition to regular training, whereas CON (n = 9) trained exclusively in cold conditions (,15°C). Before and after the intervention, Hbmass and intravascular volumes were assessed by carbon monoxide rebreathing, while reticulocyte count and BV-regulating hormones were measured before, after 2 weeks and post intervention. Total ...
Despite significant technical improvements (bicarbonate dialysate, volumetric ultrafiltration control) high intradialytic ultrafiltration is troublesome in children, specially in the proportion of patients presenting a normal or low blood pressure even with overweight. We used, in this group of children (overhydratated without vascular repercution) a modelling of both sodium and ultrafiltration during dialysis, in order to achieve dry body weight without increasing session time despite hypotension risks. The usefulness and practicability of sodium and ultrafiltration modelling together during dialysis in children is analysed in a short time study (for plasma volume changes calculation) and in a long term follow up study over a year (for clinical tolerance ...
This study aimed to examine a wide profile of acute biochemical and neuromuscular responses to strength (STR) and hypertrophy (HYP) resistance exercise (RE). Seven trained men completed an STR workout (4 × 6 repetitions, 85% 1 repetition maximum [1RM], 5-minute rest periods), an HYP workout (4 × 10 repetitions, 70% 1RM, 90-second rest periods), and a control condition (CON) in a randomized crossover design. Peak force (PF), rate of force development (RFD), and muscle activity were quantified before and after exercise during an isometric squat protocol. Blood samples were taken 20, 10, and 0 minutes before and 0, 10, and 60 minutes after exercise to measure the concentration of blood lactate (BL), pH, and a number of electrolytes that were corrected for plasma volume changes. No differences were observed between the workouts for changes in PF, RFD, or muscle activity. Repeated contrasts revealed a greater (p ≤ 0.05) increase in BL concentration and reduction in pH after the HYP protocol than ...
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) acts acutely to reduce plasma volume by at least 3 mechanisms: increased renal excretion of salt and water, vasodilation, and increased vascular permeability. Authors of a study in this issue of the JCI performed a knockout of the receptor for ANP in vascular endothelia in order to distinguish the effects of ANP-dependent increases in vascular permeability from those of other endocrine actions of ANP in the regulation of plasma volume. The knockout mice exhibited reduced vascular permeability to plasma protein, resulting in chronically increased plasma volume, arterial hypertension, and cardiac hypertrophy. Renal excretion and vasodilation did not account for these changes. Thus ANP-induced increases in endothelial permeability may be critical to the ability of ANP to lower arterial blood pressure.. ...
Venous stasis (prolonged tourniquet application) and forearm exercise may increase ionized calcium due to a decrease in pH caused by localized production of lactic acid. Exposing the sample to air will cause an increase in pH due to the loss of CO2, which will decrease ionized calcium.. Heparin binds calcium. Each unit of heparin added per ml of blood will decrease ionized calcium by 0.01 mmol/L. Therefore, the correct ratio of heparin anticoagulant to blood must be achieved during sample collection. Intravenous injection of 10,000 units of heparin has been shown in adults to cause a significant decrease of ionized calcium of about 0.03 mmol/L.. To ...

These results demonstrate that splenectomy is able to blunt the decline in MAP, the increase in hematocrit, and the reduction in plasma volume that is observed in intact animals infused with a low dose of LPS. It is important to emphasize that the increase in hematocrit observed in the intact animals results from the reduction in plasma volume (Fig. 3) not from splenic contraction and discharge of high hematocrit blood into the circulation. The rat spleen neither is contractile nor does it have storage capacity (32). Moreover, we have previously demonstrated that within the intrasplenic circulation there appears to be a mechanism enabling the efflux of iso-oncotic fluid from the blood into the lymphatic system (24). We propose therefore that during endotoxemia this fluid efflux is exaggerated, resulting in hemoconcentration and hypotension. The second experiment (Study B) supports this suggestion. Despite the initial fall in blood pressure caused by LPS, splenic arterial flow was maintained due ...

The model: While Ill leave it to you to check out the full supplemental information for the details of their model, it is firmly rooted in the quantitative genetics framework of Lande land (Lande 1979; Lande and Arnold, 1983). As such, evolutionary change is measured by how selection changes the variance/covariance structure (G-matrix) of the underlying traits. The analytical model assumes a fixed G-matrix, however their simulations relax this assumption. The primary goal of the analysis is to calculate the ability of the victim/host to escape the exploiter/parasite measured as the maximum evolutionary escape rate. This evolutionary escape rate is the difference in the rates of change of the host defense traits compared to the parasite attacking trait. When the host is winning host it is said to be outrunning the parasite ...
The concept here is to regularly submit your body to training in the heat prior to an expected hot race. Research shows this can be an effective strategy. Training in heat increases blood plasma volume over time and promotes other positive physiological adaptations to exercising in the heat. It is not a "quick fix." Training in the heat the week before a race wont help. Adaptation occur over a 3-4 week time period. Sessions need not be longer than 100 minutes. Acclimation must be maintained otherwise the positive effects begin to diminish ...

The Volume Merge operation flattens the scalar data in a collection of volumes into a single base volume. This is useful for converting many overlapping volumes into one large volume for more efficient rendering. For example, you can stamp hundreds of thousands of volumes into a single volume for faster rendering, and flatten hierarchies into a low-res base. You can also create a Frustum volume that ensures only voxels in your cameras field of view are created.. ...

The first act is a building ground (and a well realized comedic one at that) for the second and third (Which are some of the best in the business) and each act has its own wonderful expansion on the prior. There is a sequence here that is nearly 40 minutes of pure suspense. (Easily one of the best sequences of the decade.) Song Kang-ho is brilliant leading this superb ensemble. Every character

Modifications are described which make T-1824 suitable for plasma volume determinations on small bats. An average plasma volume of 6.5 ml/100 gm body weight has been determined for the active little brown bat, Myotis lucifugus; average blood volume, based on plasma volume and hematocrit, is 13.0 ml/100 gm body weight. Seasonal changes have been observed which apparently result primarily from changes in lean body weight and from pregnancy. Young bats have a proportionately greater blood volume. No significant differences have been found between sexes, nor between determinations made during day and night hours. Plasma and blood levels are changing least at the beginning and end of the hibernating period. Comparisons of previous studies suggest that, while a plasma decrease and unchanged cell volume seem generally characteristic of mammals which have entered hibernation, a concurrent drop in heart blood hematocrit of the hibernating bat suggests a redistribution of erythrocytes as well.. ...
Large volume paracentesis is an effective treatment for refractory ascites. The need for plasma volume expansion after paracentesis is controversial. Some studies have failed to demonstrate any disturbances in systemic or renal haemodynamics 48 hours after a single 5 litre paracentesis.5 14 However, other studies have highlighted the potential harmful effects on circulatory homeostasis after massive paracentesis in patients with tense ascites when performed without simultaneous plasma volume expansion.1 2 The pathogenesis of PCD remains incompletely understood. Recently, Ruiz del Arbolet al showed that the degree of activation of the renin-angiotensin system and sympathetic nervous system six days after paracentesis correlated inversely with changes in SVR.13 This finding suggests that accentuation of the peripheral arterial vasodilatation of cirrhosis occurs sometime after massive paracentesis. Similar results were observed in a recently published study14 showing that the increase in PRA and ...
Objective. To determine the effect of prolonged endurance exercise on the serum concentrations of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), immunoglobulin E (IgE) and upper respiratory tract symptoms (URTS).
Design. In 11 healthy, experienced volunteers (6 males, 5 females, age 43 + 9.8 years) the serum concentrations of ECP and IgE were measured, 24 hours prior to projected finishing time, immediately post exercise (IPE), and 3 h, 24 h, and 72 h after an ultramarathon (90 km). Self-reported URTS were also recorded for 14 days after the race. ECP was measured using radioimmunoassay and IgE using the Alastat Microplate Total IgE kit. The after-exercise values were corrected for plasma volume changes, which were calculated from haematocrit and haemoglobin values. Serum concentrations of ECP and IgE were analysed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) comparing values with
The endothelial glycocalyx has been particularly difficult to characterize and understand in terms of its three-dimensional structure because of its fragility and instability [1]. Indeed, in addition to trauma, surgery, hyperglycemia, and sepsis, even subtle stimuli such as a plasma volume expansion can disrupt the glycocalyx structure [20, 23-27]. Disruption of glycocalyx exposes the endothelial cells to oxidative damage, and vascular hyperpermeability is observed in sepsis and chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension [5, 28]. There has been much effort to visualize endothelial glycocalyx using TEM and substitution of the original ruthenium red staining with lanthanum or alcian blue [7, 29, 30]. In the present study, we adopted lanthanum nitrate staining with a careful perfusion method that entailed (1) incision in the right atrial appendage to relieve pressure during perfusion fixation; (2) neck ligation for better perfusion of the heart, kidney, and liver; and (3) use of a ...
Cardiovascular risk factors and markers of endothelial cell function were studied in nondiabetic patients with mild to moderate chronic renal failure. The transcapillary escape rate of albumin and the plasma concentrations of von Willebrand factor, fibrinogen, and plasma lipids were measured in 29 nondiabetic patients (GFR of 25 (11-44) mL/min x 1.73 m2 (median and range)) and 14 normal subjects. The proportion of smokers was similar between the groups. In the patients, the plasma concentration of von Willebrand factor was elevated by 61% (1.27 +/- 0.44 versus 0.79 +/- 0.28 U/mL; P , 0.01) (mean +/- SD) and that of fibrinogen was elevated by 72% (10.18 +/- 4.14 versus 5.92 +/- 2.01 mumol/L; P , 0.01). The plasma concentrations of lipoproteins showed an atherogenic pattern in the patients with increased levels of very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.57 +/- 0.31 versus 0.33 +/- 0.13 mmol/L; P , 0.01) and triglycerides (1.26 +/- 0.25 versus 0.71 +/- 0.28 mmol/L; P , 0.01), but a decreased ...

There is no objective evidence of how long intravenous solutions remain inside venous blood vessels after they have been administered, therefore there is no definite guideline of how to administer them in the preoperative setting. Besides, obese patients represent a particular group of subjects as they theoretically with-hold a constant inflammatory response and that would modify the way solutions behave intravenously, that is how long they remain inside.. Having said this, we wish to describe the way colloid solutions behave in this group of patients by taking serial blood samples in 12 obese patients after a colloid infusion, to calculate plasma dilution curves based on hemoglobin dilution and therefore infer the time it remains intravascularly.. All this in the hope this information will help, in the near future, to establish a more objective way to use these solutions and avoid possible complications due to over-administration. ...

Dear Barbara, This is a very interesting question! Here are some considerations I made in calculating the number of calories in a pint of blood. The strategy is to express the components of blood in terms of grams of protein, lipid and carbohydrate. Then convert the grams to calories. An alternative and more direct way of determining the number of calories in a donated pint of blood would be to dry it down (to remove the water), and then burn it in a calorimeter to calculate how much heat is generated from the blood. I can calculate a reasonable number for calories associated with the plasma (non-cellular portion) of the blood, but I can only make a rough approximation of the calories obtained from the red blood cells. 1. A blood donation usually is 400 to 495 ml (for calculations I will use 500 ml). 2. Assume an average hematocrit of 40% for a woman (40% red blood cells, 60% plasma by volume). 500 ml x 40% = 200 ml (plasma volume) *Plasma glucose: The average plasma glucose concentration is 90 ...
