Background: Several studies have indicated that dietary fiber may have a protective effect on gastrointestinal mucosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective action of the soluble fiber Plantago ovata husk against intestinal damage. Methods: To evaluate the anti-ulcerogenic effect on duodenal mucosa of the soluble fiber Plantago ovata husk, low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (10 mg/kg) was given orally to animals once daily for 14 or 28 days with and without Plantago ovata husk (100 mg/kg). 24 h after final dosing duodenal samples were removed for anatomopathological evaluation. Villi were examined by both light and scanning electron microscopy. Results: Acetylsalicylic acid induced severe lesions in duodenal mucosa of rabbits, including erosions, epithelium disorganization, and cell vacuolization, increasing as well the amount of mononuclear and caliciform cells. Damage was much more severe in animals treated for 28 days. In groups receiving Plantago ovata husk, a significant ...
Introduction. To investigate the distribution of Plantago major in relation to human footsteps Introduction: Plantago major is a species of Plantago which belongs to the family Plantaginaceae, and is widely found in most parts of Europe and Asia. Also called common plantain, the plant is a common weed which grows in compacted soils along sidewalks and grasslands. Medicinally, it is astringent, expectorant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and diuretic. Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that Plantago major plants tend to grow abundantly in the soil that is closest to the footpath compared to the soil which is further away from the footpath. The independent variable in this investigation was different parts of grassland along a sidewalk in which the plants were counted while the dependent variable was the number of plants found in each of the parts. ...read more. Main Uses: A tea can be used to treat lung disorders and stomach problems. This same tea may be used as a mouthwash to treat sores in the mouth and toothaches. It may also be used externally to treat sores, cuts, scratches, blisters, insect bites and stings, hemorrhoids, burns, rashes, and other skin irritations. A poultice of the leaves may be applied to the affected area. This is probably plantains most common use. For relief from an insect bite, simply shred (or chew) a plantain leaf and hold it on the bite for a few minutes. Plantain is currently being marketed as a stop smoking aid. It is said that it causes an aversion to tobacco. Plantain seeds are very high in mucilage and fiber. The seeds of a closely related species (Plantago psyllium) are the primary ingredient in laxatives such as Metamucil. Common plantain seeds may be used in the same fashion. The mucilage from the seeds may also reduce high cholesterol ...
Arabinoxylan is a polysaccharide of Plantago ovata, an indigenous plant of Pakistan and several European countries. In the present investigation arabinoxylan isolated from P. ovata husk was chemically modified i.e., carboxymethylated and was converted into its sodium salt. Physicochemical characterization of modified arabinoxylans was done. The antimicrobial assay of arabinoxylan and modified arabinoxylans was done by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method against Gram negative and Gram positive bacterial strains. Physicochemical properties of modified arabinoxylans were different from arabinoxylan yet were satisfactory for their use as pharmaceutical excipients. Arabinoxylan showed strong antimicrobial activity against Gram positive strains. However, it showed no antimicrobial activity against Gram negative strains. Carboxymethyl arabinoxylan showed maximum activity against S. epidermidis. It also showed activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Arabinoxylan-Na showed concentration-dependent ...

Plantago major extract has been traditionally used for treating diabetes and to increase male fertility. This study was conducted to verify its efficacy. The hypoglycaemic property of P. major aqueous leaf extract was determined 1Yy oral administration of four treatment doses (l00, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg body weight). Saline and glibenclamide were used as controls. Glucose Tolerance Test was done at -10, 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes and the plasma glucose concentration was determined 1Yy the glucose oxidase assay. The study showed that only the 600 mg/kg dose had a significant effect in reducing blood glucose level in diabetic rats. However, the effect of the aqueous extracts was less pronounced compared to glibenclamide. In the fertility study, an aqueous extract from P. major seeds was given orally to rats at 30, 60, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight respectively. The effect of each dose on vas deferens sperm concentrations after 20 days of treatment was determined. Analysis of the ...

Plantaginaceae s.l. The genus Plantago contains over 200 species. P. ovata and P. psyllium are produced commercially in several European countries, the former Soviet Union and India. Plantago seed, known commercially as black, French, or Spanish psyllium, is obtained from P. psyllium, also known as P. arenaria. Seed produced from P. ovata is known in trading circles as white or blonde psyllium, Indian plantago, or isabgol. Isabgol is the common name in India for P. ovata. it is known as Aspaghol in Pakistan, coming from the Persian asp and gul, meaning horse flower, which is descriptive of the shape of the seed. India dominates the world market in the production and export of psyllium. Plantago ovata is an annual herb that grows to a height of 30-46 cm (12-18 in). Leaves are opposite, linear or linear lanceolate 1 cm × 19 cm (0.39 in × 7.48 in). The root system has a well-developed tap root with few fibrous secondary roots. A large number of flowering shoots arise from the base of the plant. Flowers are ...

The plantain family as traditionally circumscribed consisted of only three genera, Bougueria, Littorella, and Plantago. However phylogenetic research has indicated that Plantaginaceae s.s. (s.s. = sensu stricto, in the strict sense) were nested within Scrophulariaceae (but forming a group that did not include the type genus of that family, Scrophularia). Although Veronicaceae (1782) is the oldest family name for this group, Plantaginaceae (1789) is a conserved name under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) and thus has priority over any earlier family name for a family including Plantago. Furthermore, the ICBN does not consider family names published before 1789 to be names eligible for conservation, thus ruling out Veronicaceae. The name Antirrhinaceae has been proposed for conservation over Plantaginaceae. In the meantime, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group has accepted the name Plantaginaceae. However, Olmstead (2003) has chosen to use the name Veronicaceae, a later synonym. ...

Plantago asiatica has been traditionally used for traditional medicine around East Asia. Plantamajoside (PM), which is isolated from this plant, is known for biological properties including anti-inflammation and antioxidant activity. To demonstrate the biological activity of PM against endothelial dysfunction induced by advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), a cellular inflammatory mechanism system was evaluated in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). We obtained PM through previous research in our laboratory. We formed the AGEs from bovine serum albumin with glyceraldehyde in the dark for seven days. To confirm the modulation of the inflammatory mechanism in endothelial dysfunction, we quantified the various pro-inflammatory cytokines and endothelial dysfunction-related proteins in the HUVECs with Western blotting and with real-time and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions. Co-treatment with PM and AGEs significantly suppressed inflammatory

Not to be confused with the banana-like fruit of the same name, the Plantago major is a green, weedy plant native to North America, Europe and Asia. Cultures around the world have used the plantain leaf (Plantago major) to help relieve health ailments for millennia. The plant is one of nine sacred herbs mentioned in the ancient Lacnunga (Remedies), a collection of Anglo-Saxon medical texts. During the 1500s and 1600s, it was used by Europeans for everything from dog bites and boils to fevers and the flu [1]. The major components of plantain are iridoid glycosides (particularly aucubin), mucilage, and tannins. Together, they are believed to reduce irritation, quell harmful organisms, and exhibit expectorant actions [2].. How is Plantain Leaf Used?. Today, it is still frequently used in folk medicine. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is found in balms called mehlems for urogenital tract disorders, respiratory system disorders, gastrointestinal tract disorders, skin ailments, blood system disorders, ...

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) directly determines the rate of plant photosynthesis and indirectly effects plant productivity and fitness and may therefore act as a selective pressure driving evolution, but evidence to support this contention is sparse. Using Plantago lanceolata L. seed collected from a naturally high CO2 spring and adjacent ambient CO2 control site, we investigated multigenerational response to future, elevated atmospheric CO2 . Plants were grown in either ambient or elevated CO2 (700 μmol mol-1 ), enabling for the first time, characterization of the functional and population genomics of plant acclimation and adaptation to elevated CO2 . This revealed that spring and control plants differed significantly in phenotypic plasticity for traits underpinning fitness including above-ground biomass, leaf size, epidermal cell size and number and stomatal density and index. Gene expression responses to elevated CO2 (acclimation) were modest [33-131 genes differentially expressed ...

Although arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are a major pathway in the global carbon cycle, their basic biology and, in particular, their respiratory response to temperature remain obscure. • A pulse label of the stable isotope 13C was applied to Plantago lanceolata, either uninoculated or inoculated with the AM fungus Glomus mosseae. The extra-radical mycelium (ERM) of the fungus was allowed to grow into a separate hyphal compartment excluding roots. We determined the carbon costs of the ERM and tested for a direct temperature effect on its respiration by measuring total carbon and the 13C:12C ratio of respired CO2. With a second pulse we tested for acclimation of ERM respiration after 2 wk of soil warming. • Root colonization remained unchanged between the two pulses but warming the hyphal compartment increased ERM length. δ13C signals peaked within the first 10 h and were higher in mycorrhizal treatments. The concentration of CO2 in the gas samples fluctuated diurnally and was highest in ...

Plantain has done it again! This plant never ceases to amaze me in its ability to suck out splinters, dirt, bug venom and bee stingers. A few days ago, I got a nasty sliver in my index finger. It was deep under the skin, and in there so good I couldnt see how it broke the skin. I tried the usual at-home surgical tools (sterilized nail clipper, pin, and tweezers), and after removing layer after painful layer of flesh, I realized it wasnt going anywhere. I bandaged it up and went to bed. The next morning, I found a few succulent looking leaves in the yard, chewed them up and placed it on the sliver-laden finger. I used a fresh bandage to keep it in place for the afternoon. Three hours later, I took off the plantain band-aid to investigate; not only was the sliver gone, but the formally raw and bothered flesh was healing together quite nicely. Plantain (Plantago major) can quickly pique the interest of a non-herb person when they see how easy …. ...

Cough is a life saving reflex, therefore it is important, especially in pediatrics, to calm cough spells without sedating the reflex. Mucolytic agents have been shown to be helpful but side effects have been reported and use has been prohibited under 2 years of age. Therefore, a completely safe and effective cough remedy has not been officially reported yet in a randomised trial. Looking into other mechanisms for cough management such as protection of irritated pharynx mucosa from post nasal drip or other irritating substances is theoretically sound and shows practical interesting results.. A parallel comparison of efficacy and tolerability between such protective mechanism (acting through a barrier and radical scavenging action) due to natural substances (honey, plantago lanceolata, grindelia robusta and helichrysum italicum) and a mucolytic substance has not been done so far, in young children, especially in a time frame of 4 days. The intent of this study is to use the protective syrup versus ...

This paper gives a kinetic analysis of the K+-selective outward-rectifier (IK,out) in the plasma membrane of Arabidopsis thaliana mesophyll cells in terms of the Hodgkin-Huxley formalism. We compared the kinetic characteristics of IK,out in Arabidopsis with IK,out channels in three other plant species that were subjected to a similar analysis: tobacco suspension cells, Vicia faba guard cells and Plantago media root cells. Because the activation kinetics of IK,out shows a clear voltage dependence, the time constant of half-activation (τ1/2) and the elementary rate constant of channel opening (α) were calculated at the potential of half-activation (V1/2). The Arabidopsis IK,out activates relatively slowly and this is reflected in a τ1/2 of approximately 1 s. The reason for this slow activation is twofold. Firstly, the value of α of 1.5 s−1 falls at the lower end of the range of values obtained for tobacco, Vicia and Plantago: 1.1 to 3.0 s−1. Secondly, IK,out in Arabidopsis has four closed ...

Nendra Ballehannu is the name given to ripe plantains in Kannada (an Indian language). The bananas have to be really ripe for the halwa to come out perfect. Outer skin of the plantain should become dark brown, thats when the plantains are ready to be used. Yes , it does involve some hard work but believe me its well worth it:) The amount of sugar to be used largely depends on the sweetness of the plantains. You can add more or reduced the quantity mentioned to suit your taste buds ...
Though used primarily as a vegetable, a plantain, like a banana, is a fruit that can be used in both savory and sweet dishes depending on its level of ripeness. When still green, a plantain is hard and starchy, like a potato. As it ripens, the peel turns nearly black, while the flesh becomes yellow and sweet. Fully ripe plantains are soft and creamy in texture, emit a mild banana fragrance, and are supremely sweet. Plantains take several days to ripen, so if you want to cook some soon then buy ones that are already blackened in the supermarket ...
If you havent noticed, im a real sucker for fried plantain. Sometimes i wonder if its possible to actually fry plantain without sneaking a few into my mouth while at it. Add stewed gizzards to the mix and you have a totally different ball game entirely. For me i dont overcook my gizzard because i love the crunchy sound it makes in my mouth. The term gizdodo is a word used to describe the gizzard and plantain combo; giz for gizzard, dodo for plantain. There are two versions of this meal i.e the stewed version and the stir-fried version. Either way you choose to prepare it youd still end up with a hearty dish.. ...
