Maize is an important cereal worldwide and weeds are a major constraint to production. A trial was conducted in Kigumo, Muranga County, Central Province of Kenya in 2010 to compare the effects of glyphosate and intercropping maize with Dolicos lablab on weed and maize yield. Treatments comprised of DUMA SC41 and DK8031 maize varieties, glyphosate, intercropping and weedy arranged in a randomized complete block design in 5x3 m plots replicated three times and data collected in 3x1.5m area in each plot. Weed scores, biomass and maize yield were recorded. Data was analysed using Gen Stat software package, treatments effects compared using ANOVA and the means separated by Student New man Keuls. No significant differences in weed scores, biomass weight and maize yield in both seasons between glyphosate and intercropping at P , 0.05. Intercropping and glyphosate had similar effects on weeds and maize yield, the former can substitute herbicide use ...
Accurate weed identification is the first step in a successful weed management program. Weeds respond differently to different management strategies. Whether you choose chemical, cultural or mechanical control measures, you need to know what weed species are present. Failure to identify the weed problem accurately may lead to wasted time and money or excess pesticide applied to the environment.. Because most weeds are most effectively controlled at a very young stage, it is important to identify them as early as possible. Unfortunately, many weeds look very similar at a young stage. This guide is designed to help identify seedling weeds while there is still time to control them.. This guide includes 54 of the most common weed species in the North Central Region. Colored photographs are provided that highlight the distinguishing characteristics of the weed seedlings. A key for identifying grasses is also included.. ...
After exposing more than 70 million grain amaranth seeds to a soil-based herbicide, researchers were not able to find a single herbicide-resistant mutant.
Weeds are broadly divided into broadleaf plants (dicotyledons) or narrowleaf plants (monocotyledons). Most narrowleaf plants are grasses, but this group also includes sedges, such as yellow nutsedge, which are important weeds. Another way to classify weeds is by when they germinate and grow. Many common weed species are winter annuals, germinating mainly in fall, growing through winter and spring, and dying as summer approaches. Summer annuals germinate in spring, grow through summer and die as the temperature drops in the fall. Irrigation can alter the germination time of weeds and prolong the life span of some annuals and delay their senescence. A few weeds complete a life cycle in 2 years and are referred to as biennials (e.g., bristly oxtongue). Some of the worst weed species are perennials; weeds that live for 2 years or more. These include bermudagrass, creeping woodsorrel, and nutsedge that persist through their vegetative propagules (stolons, rhizomes, or tubers). See the Common Weeds in ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Effects of plant-soil feedback on tree seedling growth under arid conditions. AU - Meijer, S.S.. AU - Holmgren, M.. AU - Van der Putten, W.H.. N1 - Reporting year: 2011 Metis note: 5220; WAG; TE. PY - 2011. Y1 - 2011. N2 - Aims Plants are able to influence their growing environment by changing biotic and abiotic soil conditions. These soil conditions in turn can influence plant growth conditions, which is called plant-soil feedback. Plant-soil feedback is known to be operative in a wide variety of ecosystems ranging from temperate grasslands to tropical rain forests. However, little is known about how it operates in arid environments. We examined the role of plant-soil feedbacks on tree seedling growth in relation to water availability as occurring in arid ecosystems along the west coast of South America. Methods In a two-phased greenhouse experiment, we compared plant-soil feedback effects under three water levels (no water, 10% gravimetric moisture and 15% gravimetric ...

Jeff Stachler Ag Educator for OSU Extension, Auglaize County - and Weed Expert Extraordinaire - has teamed up with one of our local Master Gardeners, Doris Hibner, to hold a program entitled, Weed Identification and Management in the Home Garden and Landscape. The program will be this Thursday evening, April 27, starting at 6 p.m.. The first topic of discussion will be the basics of weed identification, focusing on grassy and broadleaf weeds. Following the presentation, there will be a walk around Doriss farm to identify weeds. After the weed walk, discussion will be held on how to control weeds. This should be an exciting and informative program!. The program will take place at Doriss farm on Ashburn Road, southeast of Wapak. We will be meeting at Charlie Webbs shop, right next door at 11607 Ashburn Road. Look for the balloons to find the location. Pre-register for the event by contacting Jeff at ...
March. Spot treat broadleaf weeds if necessary. The most important treatment for broadleaf weeds should be in late October to early November well after the buffalograss is dormant. Treatments are much more effective then than in the spring as the weeds are smaller and the weeds are sending energy, as well as the herbicide, to the roots. Treatments in March are to take care of any escapes missed in the fall spraying. Spray early enough in March that the buffalograss is still dormant. Look at the base of the plants to make sure there is no green. Treat on a day that is 50 degrees F or warmer. Rain or irrigation within 24 hours of application will reduce effectiveness. Use a combination product such as Trimec, Weed-B-Gon or Weed-Out. Weed Free Zone is also good and will give quicker results under cool conditions.. April. Apply crabgrass preventer between April 1 and April 15, or apply preventer when the eastern redbud is in full bloom. If using a product with prodiamine (Barricade), apply two ...
The intensification of agricultural activities has provided unprecedented increases in crop production. In the light of this development concerns have been raised about its negative environmental impact. High-input farm management has further reduced the weed diversity and shaped weed communities to consist of a few highly competitive weed species. Ecological theory and soil microbial processes presents another perspective focusing on managing weeds with the use of different nutrient sources and crop diversity. The establishment of distinct resource pools in soil allow nutrients to be segregated between species and reduce weed-crop competition. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different nutrient sources in different quantities on competitive interactions between the weed species Avena fatua (wild oat) and Matricaria perforata (scentless chamomille) and the crop Avena sativa (oat) intercropped with the cover crop Trifolium resupinatum (Persian clover). The model plants ...
Introduction. Weeds are plants that compete with the desired commercial crop, lowering productivity. They do this by blocking irrigation canals and by competing for water, nutrients, space, and light, consequently, the quality and crop yield decreases. A robotics application that can discriminate between weeds and crops from images is a cost-effective alternative to allow selective treatment to focus on optimizing resources and preserving environments, by identifying and removing only weed plants mixed with vegetables in crops. This approach can be solved using images processing to select undesired plants and by making an autonomous mechanical eradication on a mobile platform moving through crop, without affecting the other plants using chemical products.. Recent developments on the field of machine vision have led to a renewed interest in implementing weed recognition systems based on it. Basically, there are three main approaches for weed detection: based on colour, shape and texture analysis. ...
A Listed Weeds: Early Detection. Some of these weeds are found outside the CWMA region but could invade the region at any time in the future. Some have been found in the CWMA in isolated populations. Management focuses on developing an Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) network of people and organizations to identify sites.. B Listed Weeds: High Importance. These weeds can be locally abundant, but may also occur in spotty distribution across the landscape. Management focuses on inventory to determine distribution, followed by eradication of small, isolated populations, and control or containment of larger infestations.. C Listed Weeds: Common. These weeds occur across the landscape at a level where eradication, containment or control is not economically feasible. Management focuses on removing them from ecologically, socially and economically important sites and slowing their spread through prevention actions. When available, biological controls should be used.. W Listed Weeds: Watch ...

Management of problematic aquatic weeds in Africa. The control of aquatic weeds in Africa is difficult and all sound options should be considered. When necessary, a combination of control measures may be used, depending on the nature of the local problem. Among the ways to control exotic weeds, environmentally friendly and sustainable methods should be adopted. A sound option is the so-called classical biological control, which is the use of beneficial organisms - the natural enemies that effectively limit the populations of the host plant in its area of origin - to reduce the growth and population density of the weed in the area of introduction. The organisms used are host-specific and do not harm other desirable plants. ...
Author(s): Dickens, Sara Jo Myrtle | Advisor(s): Allen, Edith B | Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATIONInvasive Plant-Soil Feedbacks and Ecosystem Resistance and Resilience: A Comparison of Three Vegetation Types in CaliforniaBy Sara Jo DickensDoctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in Plant BiologyUniversity of California, Riverside, December 2010Dr Edith B. Allen, ChairpersonEcosystem processes are strongly dependant on plant-soil feedbacks. The invasion of exotic plant species can result in the introduction of novel traits capable of de-coupling native plant-soil feedbacks and leading to altered nutrient cycling and availability and microbial community composition. In general the degree to which an invading species will impact the system it invades is dependant on how much it differs from plant species native to that system. However, there are examples in which invasion of an exotic plant similar to natives has led to significant alterations of ecosystem processes. The objective of this work was to
This is widely considered to be the worst weed in California. It is easily identifiable by its shiny leaf blades and hard, nutlike underground tubers. Complete eradication may not be possible. But there are some anti-nutsedge chemical products, available in garden centers and online, that you might want to try. If you are religiously opposed to chemical use, you will probably have to sell your house and move to another, after carefully inspecting the garden of your home-to-be to make sure no nutsedge is present, to be rid of this weed once and for all.. There are relatives of nutsedge that are more garden-friendly. Umbrella plant (Cyperus alternifolia) grows up to 5 feet tall with many parasol-shaped leaves. It is valued, in some quarters, for its durability as a container plant, whether on the patio or indoors.. Umbrella plant joins a select group of indestructible species that started out as indoor plants, but somehow found their way into the shade garden, including mother-in-law tongue ...

Now the soil is moist after several days where we sometimes had heavy rain I am called on the deal with the vigorous growth of much of my plants. I needed to stake my sweet peas, so armed with some twiggy stems I cut and weeded my way in and gently entwined their soft stems on their new supports . It was the weeds that sparked some thoughts, not the sweet peas, although hopefully they will be good enough later to spark some thoughts of praise and pleasure. The moist soil means that the weeds are much easier to remove. The bulbils of pink Oxalis and fragile stems of bindweed are easier to tease out in soft soil. They just resist when the soil is dry. This set me to thinking of the apocryphal stories we were told when I was a student. Marjorie Fish at East Lambrook Manor in Somerset would instruct her newly arrived garden trainees in the identification of weeds. Only the weeds that were in the basket could be taken out. When I was a student at Kew Brian Halliwell, department curator would creep up ...

by Dr Boyce Watkins. Today, in the inbox on my Facebook page, I received a message from a woman by the name of Elle Robinson. Elle wanted to tell me about her husband, Quawntay Adams. I receive a lot of messages about the many injustices taking place in our criminal justice system, but this one stood out to me a little more than most.. Mr. Adams received a 35-year prison sentence for attempting to possess marijuana. This threw me aback, since I just gave a speech for the Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter in Denver, Colorado, a state where weed is now legal and out in the open. I rode in the car with a good friend and respected attorney by the name of Eddie Koen, who told me about all of the wealthy white men who are opening up weed distilleries and making money hand over fist. Almost none of those making money from selling legal weed are black.. The most ironic part of all of this was two-fold. First, I thought about all of the inmates around the country, many of them black, who are still serving ...
The team combined data on household incomes and their use of natural resource for all municipalities in the country. Distribution data of 57 invasive weeds helped establish the communities which were the most affected. It also consumed a lot of water and other resources for its growth. So overall, it had a negative impact on the affected community ...
The One who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world; and the good seed-these are the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Therefore, just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather from His kingdom everything that causes sin and those guilty of lawlessness. They will throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Fathers kingdom. Their argument is clear from the subtitle: Bennett and White are seeking to point out all the ways that marijuana hurts people. Fighting the commonly held notion that weed is harmless, they work through a myriad of ways that weed affects people badly.. They know they are fighting uphill, so they start off their introduction by pointing to an article published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine, the most prestigious and respected medical journal in the country, that points out the various impacts that weed has on users health. So as to emphasize the importance of the article, the authors actually received permission to reprint it in full at the end of their book.. Their arguments about the effects of marijuana ought to be enough to disabuse anyone of the idea that weed is harmless. Using weed can cause short-term memory impairment, and it has been linked to a higher rate of dropping out of school. It impairs bodily coordination and alters users judgment, making it dangerous to ...

Key identification features. Sterile brome from a young plant has a hairy stem and leaves, it has a dense covering of hairs on the stem and leaf surface. It is easy to spot in barley crops due to its twisted slender leaf appearance; it is more difficult to distinguish from wheat crops due to the twisted leaf and slender leaf structure of the wheat plant. The key feature to look for is the hairs on the stem and leaf, a magnify glass is sometimes required to see the hairs especially on young plants. It helps to roll the leaf over your finger and hold it up to the light to see the surface of the leaf hairs.. It must be noted that all bromes have hairs so furthermore identification may be required, if possible finding the seed that the plant emerged from can be a good indicator but it is sometimes hard to differentiate between the different bromes.. Even before its formal establishment as a scientific discipline, allelopathy has been intertwined with agriculture and the potential of allelopathy for weed control has been a permanent matter of interest. Therefore we investigate the importance of seeds and of permanent soil seed banks as a means for propagation of weed species as well as strategies for long-term weed control. Depleting seed banks is critical and encouraging weed seed germination prior to sowing crops is one of the most promising targets for weed control by allelopathins. The share of interest in weed control and in germination in Allelopathy Journal is also examined. Finally we present and discuss methodologic aspects to be taken into account in allelopathic studies for efficient weed control by either permanently inhibiting weed seed germination or by stimulating weed seed germination ...

The program for the control of annual weeds in the orchard should consider the weed free strip under the tree and the sod middles between the tree rows separately. The Weed Control Season in orchards starts in late fall, after harvest. The program implemented in the spring depends on what herbicides were applied the previous fall. If herbicides were applied in late fall, applications can be delayed until later in the spring. Residual herbicides should be applied in late winter or early spring after the soil is no longer frozen, if no late fall treatment was applied.. Annual weeds are weed species that live for less than one year. Winter annual germinate in the fall or late winter, flower in the spring or early summer, then die. Summer annuals germinate in the spring and early summer flower, and die in late summer or fall. Perennial weeds are weed species that live for more than two years. Control of these weeds must be considered separately.. Emerged annual weeds under the tree are controlled ...
The goal of La Plata County Weed Management Program is to manage and/or eradicate noxious weeds in our region. We do this by controlling the weeds on County Roads and County Properties, and also through educating and helping landowners with vegetation on their property.. Large infestations can be stopped, reduced, managed and sometimes eventually eradicated. Smaller invasions can most times be fully eradicated before they have a chance to become established, and then spread throughout a sub region in the County. By accomplishing this landowners and managers help stop noxious weeds from forcing out native plants and animals from their natural environment.. La Plata County has an aggressive program when it comes to weed management. We have developed our own methods for tracking and controlling weeds and have worked with many landowners to help manage weeds on private properties. Below are some of the methods that have helped to control weeds thus far in La Plata County.. ...

The research objectives were to evaluate the impact of time of grass weed removal on grain sorghum yield when grown in different crop row spacing and seeding rates and to determine the critical duration of grass weed competition. Field studies were conducted in 2014 and 2015 at the KSU Agricultural Research Center at Hays, KS and the KSU Department of Agronomy Research Farm near Manhattan, KS. Four main treatments were grain sorghum row spacing of 25 and 76 cm at Hays or 20 and 76 cm at Manhattan, and two seeding rates of 125,000 and 150,000 seed ha⁻¹. Within each main plot, seven treatments were established including: weed-free all season using pre-emergence herbicides, ...

Although carrots may be grown on mineral soils, production in Florida is almost exclusively on the organic soils of central and south Florida. While the practice of seeding the crop in six lines per bed enhances total yield that may be harvested per acre, it also mostly prevents the use of mechanical cultivation for weed control. Control of weeds is extremely important in several aspects. Because weeds directly compete with carrots for nutrients, space, and water, they reduce the size of carrot roots and thus reduce overall yield. Weeds also cause carrot roots to be deformed and therefore unmarketable. Weeds that present late in the season may also cause severe harvesting problems. Weed control is critical early in the season because it will allow the formation of good, straight roots, and it is important for the above reasons throughout the growing season. Currently, only linuron is labeled for preemergence (both carrots and weeds) application on muck soils, and only linuron, pendimethalin, and ...
There are weeds that have producers moving from a glyphosate weed control program to a glufosinate weed control program. Glufosinate is the active ingredient in Liberty® herbicide. This switch has been forced by the spread of glyphosate resistant weeds due to continual and repetitive use of only glyphosate across wide geographies of the United States. Among the most common and yield damaging weed species are Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, marestail, common ragweed and giant ragweed. Cost to control these weeds can exceed $100 per acre. It should be noted that many of these glyphosate resistant weeds are also resistant to ALS herbicides, PPO herbicides among others ...
Weeds are a natural part of lakes, ponds, and rivers. They can be beneficial in some instances, but if they start to take over, it can cause problems. Some can become invasive and impede the growth of other natural plants. If you are struggling to maintain the vegetation yourself, its time to call aquatic weed control professionals. They can restore balance to your oasis and ensure that the water and shores remain healthy.. ...

The growing season is in full swing, and the team at FMC Corporation is encouraging growers to be extra weed-conscious as summer comes to an end and harvest season begins. Ken Smith, Technical Service Manager for FMC Corporation, was on hand during the 2016 Ag Media Summit to discuss the reality of herbicide resistance, and how it has made fall weed management more critical than ever. We are in late season, and its a time where its easy to let your guard down, but its also a time when we really need to be conscious of what weeds are out there going to seed, particularly the amaranth species like palmer amaranth and water hemp are such prolific seed producers and its a numbers game, so managing these in the fall is very critical for next year, said Smith in an interview during the Ag Media Summit.. Smith emphasized that while a multitude of weed management practices exist, many are time consuming and expensive, and the use of a long residual herbicide such as FMCs Anthem line of herbicides ...

Weeds compete for nutrients and soil moisture resulting to low maize yields in dry lands. A three year field study was initiated in 2009 at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization, Kiboko to evaluate the effect of dolichos bean (Lablab purpureus L.) and open pollinated imazapyr herbicide coated imidazolinone-resistant (IR)1 maize on weed species composition, density, and maize yield. Initially, weed species were identified, and then controlled using glyphosate at 1.6 kg ai ha 1. Twenty four plots were marked, each measuring 4 5 m. Six treatments 1) IR-maize coated, 2) IR-maize coated þ brown dolichos, 3) IR-maize coated þ black dolichos 4) IR-maize uncoated, 5) IR-maize uncoated þ brown dolichos, 6) IR-maize uncoated þ black dolichos were laid out in a randomized complete block design replicated four times. IR-maize was planted at a spacing of 90 45 cm and 2 seeds per hole. Weeds were sampled from a one meter squared quadrat 21 and 42 days after planting (DAP). The data was ...

Last month found me driving north through the Salinas Valley, a long, narrow lowland known to many as the salad bowl of the world. I was on my way to give a presentation on edible weeds at the National Heirloom Expo.. As my husband drove, I couldnt help noticing the never-ending rows of perfectly straight, weed-free greens. I mentally compared this scene with my own garden, a vegetable bed in which I allow edible weeds to mature for my dinner plate. I would have to be on my hands and knees constantly to get my plot to come even close to resembling these acres in Salinas. The fact that I didnt see a single migrant worker toiling in the field that day told me the weed control is largely by chemical death. Sure enough, about midway up the valley, we caught up with the helicopter spraying the hell out of the fields with a chemical cocktail of something that was clearly very effective.. Of course farming with industrial herbicides has been around since World War II and the helicopter wasnt a ...

Weedy rice is a serious problem of cultivated rice in most of the rice-growing areas in Asia, causing increased production costs and yield losses in rice. A study was conducted to determine the response of weedy rice accessions from India (IWR), Malaysia (MWR), Thailand (TWR), and Vietnam (VWR) to seed burial and flooding depths. The greatest emergence for each weedy rice accession (97% for IWR, 82% for MWR, 97% for TWR, and 94% for VWR) was observed in seeds placed on the soil surface. Seedling emergence decreased with increase in burial depth. For the IWR accession, 0.5% of the seedlings emerged from 8-cm depth, whereas for the other three weedy rice accessions, no seedlings emerged from this depth. When seeds were sown on the soil surface, flooding depth ranging from 0 to 8 cm had no or very little effect on seedling emergence of different weedy rice accessions. On the other hand, flooding decreased seedling emergence in all weedy rice accessions when seeds were sown at 1 cm deep into the ...

TY - JOUR AU - Brankov, Milan AU - Simić, Milena AU - Dragičević, Vesna AU - Kresović, Branka PY - 2017 UR - http://rik.mrizp.rs/handle/123456789/675 AB - In recent years it has been generally recommended to conduct the control of weeds, pests and diseases not only by chemical means, but also through the use of all other available measures which can directly or indirectly affect the present harmful organisms. By applying such a system of pest control a long-term positive effect on the agro ecosystem is obtained. In the case of crop rotation, positive effects for cultures were achieved simultaneously with weed suppression. On the other hand, this system does not exclude chemical weed control, but indicates to its proper and rational use. At the experimental field of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje, the effects of two growing systems were tested in maize production: maize monoculture and maize-winter wheat crop rotation on weediness and grain yield of hybrids ZP 677 and ZP 606. TY - JOUR. T1 - Testing the Australian Post-Border Weed Risk Management (WRM) system for invasive plants in Iran. AU - Sohrabi, Sima. AU - Downey, Paul O.. AU - Gherekhloo, Javid. AU - Hassanpour-bourkheili, Saeid. PY - 2020/2/1. Y1 - 2020/2/1. N2 - Given the global threat from invasive plant species, management systems are needed to determine the risk posed. Whilst pre-border weed risk assessment systems have been tested and applied broadly, risk assessment systems for species post-border (or weed risk management) are yet to be subjected to such levels of scrutiny. Here we adapted the Australian Weed Risk Management (AWRM) approach to the geographic, climatic and weed management context of Iran. Then we evaluated and tested the performance of the adapted WRM system using 38 candidate species, comprising both native and non-native invasive plant species present in Iran. Additionally we modified the post-border WRM approach by specifically focusing on the feasibility of containment, rather than ...
LASSEN COUNTY, CALIF., where the high desert meets the Sierra Nevada, offers wide-open vistas of juniper and sagebrush, and habitat for rare wildlife such as sage grouse and Carson wandering skipper butterflies. U.S. Bureau of Land Management botanist Carolyn Gibbs started fighting weeds here as a graduate student in 1994. She spent her summers pulling yellow star thistle, public enemy number one for the coalition of groups and agencies that became the Lassen County Special Weed Action Team. Today, the Weed Warriors target all the noxious weeds in the county, including cheatgrass and the lesser-known but even more insidious medusahead, and Gibbs is looking forward to a new tool in her fight against these two explosively flammable grasses: Plateau, an herbicide that she says leaves most native plants unharmed. The BLM is set to approve its use this fall, when it issues its final decision on an herbicide plan. The plan allows spraying for weeds and flammable brush on nearly a million acres of ...
Its easy to reach for the bottle when youre confronted with weeds. Pesticides are an easy out, but theyre not the best answer for your garden. Chemical herbicides kill soil life and may also kill some of the desired plants as well as those that are undesirable. They also increase the chemical load of local wildlife, and local wildlife like birds are important predators in your garden.. Instead, choose organic weed control methods. Commercial organic herbicides use botanical products like citrus oil to kill weeds. You can also create your own homemade organic herbicides. How?. Boiling water is a high-impact way to kill off unwanted vegetation. Pour it on the plants that you want gone. This does have the potential for killing surrounding plants and soil life, since the water is so hot. The good side? Boiling water simply moves into the soil as it cools, leaving no residue.. Vinegar or soap solutions are also popular spray-on homemade herbicides. Mix 1 cup of vinegar, ¼ cup of salt, and ¼ cup ...

INTRODUCTION Studies related to weed behavior are essential for agriculture sustainability in tropical soils, once their interference can cause significant yield losses, especially in crops with lower competitive ability. One of the mechanisms which ensures survival of a given species under constantly disturbed environments, especially for annual plants, is the high number of seeds produced. Deuber (1992) cites several weeds with high seed production, as Amaranthus spp. 120.000 seeds per plant, Galinsoga parviflora 30.000 seeds per plant and Portulaca oleracea -53.000 seedsper plant. In an adverse and constantly disturbed environment these species usually tend to increase its occurrence, covering most of the area and causing more problems for commercial crops. In addition, factors related to herbicide tolerance may contribute for the higher occurrence of a given weed species (Norsworthy et al., 2001). Among distinct soil managements, no-till cropping systems can shift the dynamics of weed ...
