Exotic ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Doug. ex Lawson) plantations are being planted within the natural distribution area of cordilleran cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis (D.Don) Pic. Ser. et Bizzarri) in Patagonia, Argentina. The productivity of these exotic plantations is much greater than that of native forests, suggesting greater water use. Before these plantations become widespread, it is crucial to determine what effects ponderosa pine plantations may have on scarce water resources in the region. In the first study, I examined the seasonal variation in transpiration and soil water depletion for four forest stands: high and low density ponderosa pine plantations, and high and low density cordilleran cypress stands. Kochia (Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad) is a troublesome and highly competitive weed in many cropping systems in the Great Plains region. It has traditionally been controlled using postemergence (POST) applications of glyphosate, however control is becoming inconsistent. Use of preemergence (PRE) herbicides may help to control kochia. Objectives of this research were to (1) Evaluate the efficacy of selected PRE herbicides in combination with POST applied glyphosate for controlling kochia in soybeans, (2) evaluate a kochia population (Norton) response to various rates of glyphosate compared to previously characterized highly susceptible (Syracuse) and moderately resistant (Ingalls) kochia populations, and (3) quantify the effects of herbicide rate, planting depth, soil pH, and soil type on corn, soybean, and grain sorghum tolerance to saflufenacil. Fire suppression and other factors have resulted in high wildfire risk in the western US, and prescribed burning can be an effective tool for thinning forests and reducing fuels to lessen wildfire risks. However, prescribed burning sometimes fails to substantially reduce fuels and sometimes damages and kills valuable, large trees. This study compared fuel reductions between spring and fall prescribed burns and tested whether removing (i.e., raking) fuels within 1 m of boles reduced fire damage to ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson & C. Lawson). In 2007 and 2008, raking was applied to alternating trees along 18 transects in central Oregon, USA. Fuels surrounding 292 trees were burned in fall 2010, and fuels surrounding 216 trees were burned in spring 2012. Alternative food supplies could maintain humanity despite sun-blocking global catastrophic risks (GCRs) that eliminate conventional agriculture. A promising alternative food is making leaf concentrate. However, the edibility of tree leaves is largely uncertain. To overcome this challenge, this study provides the methods for obtaining rapid toxics screening of common leaf concentrates. The investigation begins with a non-targeted approach using an ultra-high-resolution hybrid ion trap orbitrap mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled to an ultra-high pressure two-dimensional liquid chromatograph system on the most common North American leaf: the red maple. Identified chemicals from this non-targeted approach are then cross-referenced with the OpenFoodTox database to identify toxic chemicals.
