Plagiarism occurs when academic integrity principles are not followed. Plagiarism can take a range of forms, from accidental through to deliberate actions. Accidental plagiarism might occur if you run out of time to write an assignment and neglect to put references in your work. Deliberate plagiarism, also known as academic misconduct, might involve paying someone else to write your assignment for you, or cheating to pass an exam. Figure 1 shows the scale of accidental through to deliberate acts of plagiarism.

2. DovBears Plagiarism Was Minimal, Unintentional or Harmless. Many have tried to minimize DovBears sins in a number of ways. [DB: Ive taken care not to do this, and I have asked my commenters to desist from it as well] Some have argued that DovBears plagiarism was not the bad kind or that it was minimal when compared to his overall output. Others have taken issue with some of my examples. The only way to address these claims is to revisit each of the examples in my original posts. I used a rating scale for each post: 3 is for egregious plagiarism, including extensive cutting and pasting of text and other indications of premeditation. 2 is for run of the mill plagiarism, including cutting and pasting small amounts of text. 1 is for arguable cases of plagiarism, where a reasonable case could be made that the post is question is either not plagiarism or unintentional plagiarism ...
Occurrences of academic dishonesty have decreased at Duke: Twenty-one students were charged with academic dishonesty during the Spring 2005 semester-a decrease from 25 students the previous fall and 33 students the spring before. Eighteen students were found guilty of the charges, and one case is still pending. Occurrences of plagiarism, however, have remained consistent: Since Fall 2004, the number of plagiarism charges has remained almost constant, varying by only one ca ...
A deeper understanding of academic dishonesty? In 2016-17, the Teaching Academy Book Club read Susan Blums My Word! Plagiarism and Student Culture. Blum provides an interesting take by querying what it means to have an original idea. For example, if you receive significant editorial support for an article, to what extent does the work then remain an original idea? Or, in another example, who owns the mash up of digital works. Isnt Wikipedia inherently an example of an inherently commonly-owned knowledge? Blum challenges our knowledge as faculty experts to demonstrate how and why the ideas and ideals of academic honesty can be misunderstood by students. (The Chronicle of Higher Education has a commentary by Blum on Academic Integrity and Student Plagiarism: A Question of Education, Not Ethics available on the web.). What can I do to prevent cheating? James Langs book, Cheating Lessons, (join the Teaching Academy Book Club in Winter/Spring 2018 for discussions of this book) proposes ...
The proper in-text citation is (Plagiarism, 2004) for a paraphrased passage or (Plagiarism, 2004, para. #) if you directly quote the material. Note that para. # represents the paragraph number in the page where the information appears. If there are multiple headings on the page, it is also acceptable to place the subheading and then a paragraph number within that heading.. For example, proper in-text citation for a direct quote of fewer than 40 words is:. Plagiarism is the use of another persons work (this could be his or her words, products or ideas) for personal advantage, without proper acknowledgment of the original work (Plagiarism, 2004, Definition, para. 1).. If the quoted material is more than 40 words, use the block quote format instead.. As another example, the proper in-text citation for a paraphrased passage is:. Plagiarism is stealing the works of others (Plagiarism, 2004).. APA Style requires that you provide a separate reference entry for each term you are citing in ...

Less than two years later, two Korean physicians, Chang Gyu Park and Ju Young Lee, published an article with striking similarities to the JACC article: The Significance of the J-Curve in Hypertension and Coronary Artery Diseases.. Rogeting is a neologism created to describe the act of modifying a published source by substituting synonyms for sufficient words to fool plagiarism detection software, often resulting in the creation of new meaningless phrases through extensive synonym swapping. The term, a reference to Rogets Thesaurus, was coined by Chris Sadler, principal lecturer in business information systems at Middlesex University, who discovered the practice in papers submitted by his students. In its basic form, rogeting simply consists of replacing words with their synonyms, chosen from a thesaurus. Several websites can perform this task online for free. A plagiarism checker wouldnt usually be able to detect the original source; however, the main drawback is that the new automatically-generated text might not sound natural or might not make sense at all, thus requiring the intervention of a human operator - who has to be careful not to reuse words that were present in the original source. A similar but much more ...

To determine the clinical effectiveness of statins on cardiovascular mortality in practice, observational studies are needed. Control for confounding is essential in any observational study. Within this group (n = 49,688, up to 16 years of follow-up), we estimated the effect of adherence to statin therapy (0 = completely non-adherent, 1 = fully adherent) on ischemic heart diseases and cerebrovascular disease (ICD10-codes I20-I25 and I60-I69) as well as respiratory and endocrine disease mortality (ICD10-codes J00-J99 and E00-E90) as falsification end points, controlling for demographic factors, socio-economic factors, birth cohort, adherence to other cardiovascular medications, and diabetes using time-varying Cox
In science, we always base our work on the work that others have done before us. This means that you will often use texts written by others. However, it must be clear which ideas are yours and which have come from another source. To put it simply, plagiarism means copying someone elses work and passing it off as your own. Under certain conditions, you may cite pieces directly from a much published article of other people: when the texts are not too long, the citation is placed between quotation marks and the source is included. You may paraphrase ideas, as long as you use your own words to a sufficient extent and reference the source. The boundary between citing, paraphrasing and fraud is difficult. Even simple carelessness can, in the academic world, be interpreted as fraud, because every student and lecturer is expected to follow the rules on this issue to the letter. This is why there are instructions for Information Literacy included in all Bachelor Programmes. Please, search in the course ...
The following is excerpted from the Explanation of the Honor System posted at http://www.virginia.edu/honor/proc/fraud.html. All students at the University of Virginia are bound by the Honor Code not to commit Academic Fraud, which is a form of cheating. Academic fraud includes: Plagiarism: Plagiarism is using someone elses ideas or work without proper or complete acknowledgment. Plagiarism encompasses many things, and is by far the most common manifestation of academic fraud. For example, copying a passage straight from a book into a paper without quoting or explicitly citing the source is blatant plagiarism. In addition, completely rewording someone elses work or ideas and using it as ones own is also plagiarism. It is crucial that students properly acknowledge all ideas, work and even distinctive wording that are not their own. However, certain information in any discipline is considered common knowledge and may be used without acknowledgment. What is considered to be common ...

Another reason why falsification has turned into a nebulous entity is because much of modern, cutting-edge science is based on models rather than theories. Models are both simpler and less rigorous than theories and they apply to specific, complicated situations which cannot be resolved from first principles. There may be multiple models that can account for the same piece of data. As a molecular modeler I am fully aware of how one can tweak models to fit the data. Sometimes this is justified, at other times its a sneaky way to avoid admitting failure. But whatever the case, the fact is that falsification of a model almost never kills it instantly since a model by its very nature is supposed to be more or less a fictional construct. Both climate models and molecular models can be manipulated to agree with the data when the data disagrees with their previous incarnation, a fact that gives many climate skeptics heartburn. The issue here is not whether such manipulation is justified, rather its ...

To do otherwise is plagiarism, in violation of EKUs Academic Integrity policy.. However, citing isnt just about avoiding plagiarism. Copyright protection is included in Article I of the United States Constitution. For works created after 1978, copyright protection lasts for 70 years after the death of the last surviving author. When works are created for hire (as part of ones job), protection is even longer-95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.2 Copyrighted material includes words, poems, songs, computer-generated images, artwork, charts, graphs, tables, and more. Contributor agreements for textbooks generally include assignment of copyright to the publisher, who earns income from copyrighted materials via direct sales, licensing, and permissions to others. When a different publisher owns the copyright on a work, permission and a formal citation are required when it is to be reproduced, even when the author is identical.. Dear Cecil:. Was Einstein a plagiarist? Several articles have been written saying he was. What do you think?. - mcsage1, via e-mail. Cecil replies:. This letter will raise two questions in the mind of the average reader:. 1. You mean to tell me that in 1905, when Albert Einstein published his groundbreaking paper, there were, assuming that every cribber requires a cribbee, two people on the planet who understood the theory of special relativity?. 2. Never mind plagiarism - whatever happened to Einsteins brain, which, when discussed in this column in 1987, was housed in a cardboard box in a doctors office outside Kansas City, Missouri?. Patience - well address both matters. Plagiarism first.. Questions of priority have long swirled around the theories of relativity, both special and general. Though no one thinks Einstein confected special relativity out of thin air, his 1905 paper had no notes or references, which was odd even for the times. In fact, as Einsteins critics long ago ...

This is a period of transition, and people are frightened and excited by the possibilities. But lets not get carried away. I appreciate your efforts to explore new ways of thinking about content and copyright, but I wish you wouldnt characterize the players involved with sweeping generalizations and starry-eyed language. Everyone is looking out for their best interests from authors to publishers, from audiences to Google. And implying that all publishers are the willing bedfellows of Amazon really makes it look like you dont have a clue.. I work for a non-profit publisher. I would love it if it were my job to give away the books and make their content available to everyone for free. Some non-profit publishers are able to do this because their revenue stream is not based on book sales. But that is not a sustainable model for everyone at this time.. Please do not imply that publishers are some species of parasite. Publishers do ad value. Publishing is more than making and distributing ...

1. Welp, its never been observed to occur, (at least, not by me or anyone I know!) and it would violate whichever nifty scientific law that says that matter cannot be created or destroyed. So I dont *think* that something can come from nothing without breaking currently accepted scientific laws. (*Gasp!*) I suppose theres a number of speculative ways that matter could be created ex nihilo but thatd involve invoking either a Deity of some sort, or throwing out physics. Now, I suppose its possible that the laws of physics might be different in a pre-Bug Bang situation, but that seems like a slippery slope. Either way, it seems like you have to essentially use the magic card to explain creation from nothing, whether you invoke God or not ...

Pressures in and outside lab may be to blame, experts say. If you think the average scientist aint misbehavin, think again.. A new study has found that scientific misbehavior appears to be endemic and is occurring far more often than just the more egregious, media-hyped examples, such as faking research. Not all scientific misconduct is these gross violations like falsifications, plagiarism and fabrication, said study lead author Raymond De Vries, an associate professor of medical education and a member of the Bioethics Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A lot of us arent making up data and stealing data, he said. However, he believes that intense competition within the sciences is having a negative effect on researchers.. Many scientists are worrying more about little things that go along with working in the lab, De Vries said, like how do you interpret your data, how do you stick with the increasing number of rules in science, how do you deal with the increasingly ...

Fatigue detection software is intended to reduce fatigue related fatalities and incidents. Several companies are working on a technology for use in industries such as mining, road- and rail haulage and aviation. The technology may soon find wider applications in industries such as health care and education. In an operational environment scenario where operating systems are dependent on human performance, fatigue can be defined as an inclination to degrade performance. Thus, fatigue is an indicator of baseline risk for the occurrence of errors and accidents. Globally mining operations are at risk of fatigued workers. Sleepiness and fatigue increase human error and contribute to accidents which can be fatal. Factors compounding fatigue levels in mine workers include; disruptions in circadian rhythms due to shift work, exposure to noise, vibration and chemicals, monotonous and repetitive nature of tasks and night shift driving. Studies recognise a connotation between lifestyle and fatigue. Mine ...
The library should make every effort to support researchers and customize services to meet their needs. It can work with vendors to build apps and platforms; a library of apps would be especially useful.. Students Information Literacy Skills. Candice Benjes-Small, Head, Information Literacy & Outreach, Radford University (RU), wondered if students information literacy skills improve over time. She and her colleagues analyzed citations in papers written by seniors and compared them with those in papers written by first-year students. In general, the first-year students used more popular and general sources, and seniors used a wider variety of sources. There was not much difference between the two groups in the use of quotations and paraphrasing. In papers written by first-year students, 37% of the cited sources could not be found. Some students were afraid to quote and cite because they were afraid of being accused of plagiarism. In departments where information literacy was rigidly enforced ...
