I made a trip to the Philippines in February this year just before the COVID-19 lockdown. San Miguel Pilsner is the most famous beer in the Philippines and sold Asia-wide. The history of San Miguel is interesting as I always thought San Mig in Manila is a subsidary of the Spanish San Miguel brewery. But it was first invented in the Philippines and then the rights to sell it under the same brand name in Europe were given to a Spanish company.. I tested the Spanish regular Pilsner (San Miguel Especial) back in 2017 but when I saw the light version in the Philippines I wanted to give it a try. This light version is not available in Europe or the US as far as I know. The Spanish San Miguel brewery also dont have this one in their product portfolio. But I recently learned they have an officially labelled gluten-free beer which I will try when I get my hands around it.. Coming back to the San Mig Light. The taste is good, in the heat of the Philippines absolutely the right one to get refreshed. Of ...
The Arctic has in the later years become a final destination for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which are, due to long-range atmospheric transport, river outlets and ocean currents, brought into the pristine arctic region from southern latitudes. POPs can accumulate in biota and reach high concentrations in the upper trophic levels in the arctic food webs due to biomagnification. The hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) is a top-predator in the arctic marine food web and is susceptible to high POP exposures through diet, but also by placental transfer in utero and lactational transfer after parturition from mother to offspring. The hooded seal milk is unique by having the highest lipid percentage reported in any mammal. The objective of this study was to examine levels and patterns of POPs and their metabolites in mother-pup pairs with respect to maternal transfer and biotransformation. Milk sampled from lactating hooded seal mothers in the West Ice breeding area in the Greenland Sea were ...
San Miguel de Allende [http://www.visit-sanmiguel.com] is a small colonial town in the Bajio mountains of central Mexico, about 170 miles northwest of Mexico City. Founded as "San Miguel" in 1542 by a San Franciscan Monk named San Miguel El Grande, it became a centerpiece in the war for Mexican independence from Spain; it was renamed San Miguel de Allende after Ignacio Allende, a hero of the independence movement. In danger of becoming a ghost town in the early 20th century, the town was declared a national monument in 1926 and building became heavily restricted in the towns historic centro district, allowing the city to keep the colorful native facades that have become the backdrop of many famous works of art and even modern motion pictures.

Hooded seals have blue-gray pelage with black spots over the body. The front of the face is black and this coloration extends posteriorly to just behind the eyes. Their limbs are rather small in proportion to their body, but are powerful nonetheless, making these seals excellent swimmers and divers. Hooded seals exhibit marked sexual dimorphism. Males are slightly longer than females, and reach 2.5 m in length; females average 2.2 m. The more significant difference between the sexes is weight. Males weigh up to 300 kg while females only weigh up to 160 kg. Also unique to males is the inflatable hood and nasal septum. ("Cystophora cristata, Hooded Seal", 2007; Kovacs and Lavigne, 1986). Hooded seals get their name from the inflatable "hood" on the top of the heads of males. The hood is not present until males are about 4 years old. When the hood is deflated, it hangs down over the upper lip. Males inflate this red, balloon-like nasal septum until it protrudes out of one nostril. Males use this ...

Hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) rely on large stores of oxygen, either bound to hemoglobin or myoglobin (Mb), to support prolonged diving activity. Pups are born with fully developed hemoglobin stores, but their Mb levels are only 25-30% of adults. We measured changes in muscle Mb concentration [Mb] from birth until one year of age in two groups of captive hooded seal pups, one being maintained in a sea-water pool and one on land during the first two months. All pups fasted during the first month, but were fed from there on. The [Mb] of the swimming muscle musculus longissimus dorsi (LD) doubled during the month of fasting in the pool group. These animals had significantly higher levels and a more rapid rise in m. longissimus dorsiLD [Mb] than those kept on land. The [Mb] of the shoulder muscle, m. supraspinatus, which is less active both in swimming and hauled-out animals, was consistently lower than in the m. longissimus dorsiLD and did not differ between groups. This suggests that a major ...
By Tim Hazell. A habitat is maintained through fragile networks of food producers and consumers. Tasks carried out by specialized animals adapted for their roles through physical modification ensure survival for the ecosystem as a whole. Such an enterprise serves as a working hypothesis for systems in general. References to the activities of little creatures such as ants often contain inferences to human communities and trades.. In ancient Mexico, such descriptions helped to explain how insects living in a colony contributed to the benefit of all its members by working communally. This affectionate look at the red harvester ant is taken from the viewpoint of an Aztec scholar, translated from the original Nahuatl dialect. It is found in the Florentine Codex: General History of the Things of New Spain, compiled by Fray Bernadino de Sahagun in 1590. The treatise was one of several created by Aztec scribes at the request of the friars to illustrate the customs of native peoples of the New ...

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado. Although it is has improved over the years, the problem of street dogs in the city is still a reality. According to information from Amigos de Animales, the Ecology Department (Dirección de Medio Ambiente y Ecología) has killed more than 8,000 dogs in the last 13 years. Last year at least 20 street dogs were captured weekly.. The problem of street dogs is not exclusive to the urban area, commented Ernesto Berra, coordinator of external affairs from the Ecology Department. They have received reports from some rural communities that packs of wild dogs have attacked sheep and even killed donkeys and other animals of the same size. This problem exists because owners do not take responsibility for spaying or neutering their pets. The animals reproduce, and some owners decide the best solution is to abandon them in el campo, which can lead to uncontrollable packs. The Ecology Department does not have the proper equipment to capture the feral dogs and, according to Berra, ...

In 1999, a researcher suffered headaches, lassitude and a severe sinusitis after exposure to marine mammal strains of Brucella with which the worker was in contact. The symptoms resolved in one week after treatment with doxycycline and rifampin. The researcher had a positive titer for Brucella, and the organism was cultured from blood samples. PCR-RFLP was used to positively identify the isolates as being comparable to marine mammal Brucella (Brew and Staunton 1999). Organisms Brucella ssp. are gram-negative intracellular bacteria and are a major source of zoonoses worldwide. B. melitensus, B. abortus, and B. suis are some species commonly recognized to play a role in human and animal health. Nomenclature for marine mammal strains of Brucella has not yet been fully developed, but B. maris and B. pinnipedia have so far been named. Transmission occurs primarily through contact with aborted fetal material, and consumption of contaminated milk. ...

The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service has published for comment a draft national Procedural Directive clarifying the process for eligible permit applicants to obtain releasable marine mammals for public display purposes under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Releasable marine mammals are those that were successfully rehabilitated by the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Programs network of stranding centers and have been determined by the rehabilitation facilitys attending veterinarian to be candidates for return to the wild. NMFS will no longer grant permits for the specific purpose of retaining releasable marine mammals for public display. Instead, applicants will now need to apply for a permit to take (collect) animals from the wild pursuant to the MMPA. Non-releasable animals, on the other hand, may still be obtained through NMFS administrative procedures.. NMFS must receive any comments must by December 15, 2017.. The main function of the male reproductive organ is to procreate for the survival of the species. One must remember that the mammalian male reproductive organ was designed when the mammals were not the dominant species on the planet. It is an old hardware operating in an old software program, and no updates have been uploaded yet. For sole purpose of releasing spermatozoa, the male reproductive organ must operate without any obstacle. The male species is also not the primary sex in the animal kingdom; it is the female, the carrier of life and its protector. Males are simple carriers of the sperm. Biologically, one component of the reproductive process, the sperm has to be placed in another organism, an organism that is not shackled by child rearing. The male creature is then free to feed, fight, pay attention to his own grooming, copulate and expose himself to countless perils and infection so that he can develop his immune system, create resilient genes and be physically powerful. These are key ...

Mammals evolved in terrestrial environments. Those that now live in the marine environment have had to adapt to the particular selective pressures that this environment imposes. Meyer et al. surveyed the genomes of several marine mammal species to identify regions of convergent change. Multiple losses of the Paraoxonase 1 gene are evident in marine mammals, likely resulting from remodeling of lipid metabolism or antioxidant networks. The multiple occurrences of this loss of function across taxa indicate an evolutionary benefit. However, Paraoxonase 1 is the primary mammalian defense against organophosphorus toxicity. Marine mammals may be at a great disadvantage in the Anthropocene if run-off of this agricultural product into the marine environment continues.. Science, this issue p. 591 ...
Hydrophones allow detection of sounds emitted underwater by the marine mammals (e.g. [3]). The sensitivity of these acoustic receivers and the bandwidth of the hydrophones frequency spectrum in relation to the ambient noise, define the detection range of the hydrophones and hence the variety of marine mammals it can detect. The receiving hydrophones are either being towed behind a vessel ([4]) or deployed as stationary hydrophones (SOSUS [5] [6], T-PODs ([7] [8]). When towed, usually two or more hydrophones are installed in an array. The time difference of arrival of the animals individual sounds at the spatially separated hydrophones allows to triangulate and analyse a bearing of the received sound, thereby locating its sound source. Usually special sound recognition software is needed to identify the species to which the recorded sounds can be attributed to. With decreasing the size of the technical acoustic components, it is possible to deploy sound recording systems on marine mammals in ...

Addendum: I forgot to mention this in my original post, but Tedford et al. (1994) conducted a phylogenetic analysis of the arctoidea when they described new material of the beach bear Kolponomos (a topic for a post of its own, because it is far weirder than Puijila could ever hope to be). Kolponomos is an ursid-like critter, with forward pointing eyes, and very wide/large sea otter-like teeth presumably for crushing mollusks, and postulated to inhabit the intertidal zone. It is known thus far only from shallow marine rocks. Kolponomos is from the late Oligocene and early Miocene of the Olympic Peninsula, and I know at least from the Clallam Formation. In any event, at the time Kolponomos plotted out as the sister taxon to pinnipedia, another intriguing hypothesis. I think future analyses, especially ones investigating pinniped ancestry within the arctoidea, should also include Kolponomos. If Kolponomos is in this group of pinniped-like arctoids as well, it would certainly paint a more ...
