Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) is an annual spice and medicinal plant belonging to the family Apiaceae. Only a limited number of anise breeding studies are available. Therefore, genetic variation among anise landraces has not been extensively examined with molecular markers. In this study, the molecular diversity of 15 Turkish anise landraces collected from different regions of Turkey and four foreign landraces obtained from Cyprus, Syria and France were analyzed using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The discriminatory power of these markers was assessed by calculating various marker parameters, namely percent polymorphism, polymorphism information content (PIC), resolving power (RP), and marker index (MI). The genomic DNA of 19 anise landraces was amplified with nine RAPD primers that generated 71 polymorphic bands and five ISSRs primers that produced 45 polymorphic bands. The percentage of polymorphic loci was 59.8% in RAPD profiling and ...

The present data indicate the significant effects of anise oil to protect neurons against hypoxia as well as its anticonvulsant properties in in vitro and in vivo animal brain models. Data indicated that pretreatment with anise oil increased the latency and reduced the amplitude and duration of epileptiform burst discharges induced by PTZ injection. Anise oil also extended ATN latency, an effect enhanced by blocking of NMDA receptors. Furthermore, our findings revealed a remarkable reduction of dark neuron production and LTP induction in the hippocampus of rats pre-treated with anise oil.. In line with our results, anti-epileptic effects of anise oil were reported in different animal epilepsy models. Pourgholami et al. [10] showed that essential oil of anise exerted anticonvulsant effects induced by PTZ or maximal electroshock in male mice. Anticonvulsant effect of anise oil was also reported in picrotoxin model of epilepsy in mice [9]. In contrary to these data, it is reported that application ...
Also known as aniseed, anise (Pimpinella anisum) is an annual herb perhaps best known for its signature licorice-like flavor and spicy-sweet scent. It can reach a height of 2 feet, is covered in soft hairs, and bears white flowers and oblong schizocarp fruits. Aniseed should not be confused with star anise (Illicium verum), which is an entirely different plant that merely shares a similar flavor and scent profile. Aniseed is cultivated in southern Europe, Turkey, central Asia, India, China, and Japan, as well as Central and South America.. Anise seeds naturally contain flavonoids and fatty oils, as well as its main component anethole. These seeds have been used in cuisines around the world for their licorice-like flavor, and are popularly distilled to extract their spicy-sweet smelling essential oil. Anise seeds have also been used in ancient Egypt to make tea, by ancient Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, and in traditional European wellness practices for an array of applications, such as in ...

Skuhrovec, J., O. Douda, M. Zouhar, M. Maňasová, M. Božik, and P. Klouček. Journal of Economic Entomology, toz279, https://doi.org/10.1093/jee/toz279. The Colorado potato beetle ranks as one of the most important potato pests, mainly due to its high feeding rate during all developmental stages, particularly third and fourth larval instar, and high fecundity. The effect of essential oil (EO) from anise (Pimpinella anisum L. [Apiales: Apiaceae]) prepared as conventional and encapsulated (EN) formulations on the mortality and antifeedant responses of young larvae of Colorado potato beetles was studied to evaluate the insecticidal and antifeedant effects of five concentrations of this EO and to assess the persistence of both formulations on potato plants. The EN formulation had a significantly higher residual amount compared with that of the conventionally formulated EO. Significantly different values of LC50 and LC90 (ppm) were established for the EO (LC50 = 1,700 and LC90 = 9500) and EN (LC50 ...

The flowers and leaves are used in fruit salads, the stem and roots in sweet soups. In cooking or infused as a tea, the seeds aid digestion, quell nausea, and ease flatulence and colic. Anise is used in cough mixtures, as it is expectorant and soothes spasms of irritant coughs and bronchial problems. It promotes estrogen production and is used to encourage breast milk, ease childbirth, and stimulate libido. Tiny amounts of the essential oil, produced from the seeds, are added to toothpaste, perfumes and mouthwashes, and are used to mask bitter medicines, but in large amounts Anise is highly toxic. The seeds are carminative -they move gas out of the intestinal tract. Used in tea or as lozenges, they soothe a hard cough. For the tea, steep one teaspoon of the seeds in one cup of boiled water ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the use of herbal medicine for vasomotor symptoms during menopause. The questions posed were which herbs that were used, what parts of the herbs that were used, and how the plant parts were prepared and utilized. The last question covered how much the plants alleviated the vasomotor symptoms.. A review of the scientific literature was carried out. In the articles, 20 herbs and plants were used, but only five of them were said to relieve the vasomotor symptoms. The five plants were Actaea racemosa, Angelica sinensis, Ginkgo biloba, Glycine sp. and Pimpinella anisum. The most commonly used parts of the herbs were the roots, often through extracts that were processed in order to increase the concentration and to transform the plant parts into powder. The powder was then for the most part transformed to tablets and capsules. Sometimes, information was missing, such as the scientific names of the plants, what parts of the plants that were used and how the ...

The diet is of course totally crucial because what the mother eats tells a fetus a lot about its future environment, including how much and what type of food will be available after birth. In the womb, the growing baby gulps down several ounces of amniotic fluid daily. That fluid surrounding the baby is actually flavored by the foods and beverages the mother has eaten in the last few hours and several research studies have been conducted to prove this. "During one study, 12 pregnant women were given biscuits and sweets laced with aniseed. After they had given birth, their babys reaction to certain foods were monitored against babies who were not exposed to food with aniseed. Babies who were exposed to the strong flavor of aniseed in the womb seemed more interested and attracted to the food when presented with it. The study reveals that the babies smiled and moved towards the aniseed smell, whereas babies who were not exposed to it, turned away in disgust". ...
