Introduction: Coagulation and fibrinolysis remain sparsely addressed with regards to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We hypothesized that ARDS development might be associated with changes in plasma coagulation and fibrinolysis. Our aim was to investigate the relationships between ARDS diagnosis and plasma concentrations of tissue factor (TF), tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), and plasminogen activator inhibitor- 1 (PAI-1) in mechanically ventilated patients at increased risk of developing ARDS. Materials and methods: We performed an ethically approved prospective observational pilot study. Inclusion criteria were patients with PaO2/FiO2 < 300 mmHg admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for mechanical ventilation for 24 h, or more, because of one or more disease conditions associated with increased risk of developing ARDS. Exclusion criteria were age below 18 years; cardiac disease. We sampled plasma prospectively and compared patients who developed ARDS with those who did not ...

Background Most maternal deaths, intrapartum-related stillbirths, and newborn deaths in low income countries are preventable but simple, effective methods for improving safety in institutional births have not been devised. Checklist-based interventions aid management of complex or neglected tasks and have been shown to reduce harm in healthcare. We hypothesized that implementation of the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist program, a novel childbirth safety program for institutional births incorporating a 29-item checklist, would increase delivery of essential childbirth practices linked with improved maternal and perinatal health outcomes. Methods and Findings A pilot, pre-post-intervention study was conducted in a sub-district level birth center in Karnataka, India between July and December 2010. We prospectively observed health workers that attended to women and newborns during 499 consecutively enrolled birth events and compared these with observed practices during 795 consecutively enrolled birth

Dating and relationship violence refers to violence within or following a dating or longer-term sexual or romantic relationship. It includes threats, emotional and relational abuse, controlling behaviours, physical violence and non-consensual sexual activities. Project Respect is a new programme that will be piloted in English secondary schools that aims to prevent dating and relationship violence among young people. In order to run a larger study to assess whether Project Respect works in reducing dating and relationship violence, a smaller study is needed to assess whether the intervention and research methods are practically possible. This study looks to pilot the programme and receive feedback on how feasible the programme is. It will not be able to tell whether the programme has reduced dating and relationship violence, but it will tell whether the programme is possible to deliver in schools, and whether students and staff like it. It is necessary to know whether it would be feasible and ...
A program of functional literacy, as an integral part of the program of Farmers Training and Functional Literacy, is presented. Its objectives are: (1) to increase the attainment and use of literacy skills, and (2) to bring about the socio-economic change on the individual with particular emphasis on changes in agricultural production. The specific objectives of this pilot study were to obtain the qualitative and quantitative measurements of: (1) the attainment and use of literacy skills, (2) the impact of the program on the individual, and (3) the teaching/learning situation. The study was conducted on an ex-post-facto basis using experimental and matched control groups. Primary data was gathered by a team of seven interviewers. The experimental group consisted of adult farmers, drawn from 12 villages. Factors used for measurement purposes covered the following areas: (1) the literacy skills attained by the participants, (2) the impact on agriculture of the knowledge
The HIFU device has been previously described in detail. 14,17 A coupling cone made of polymer was placed in direct contact with the eye, which allowed good placement of the transducers in terms of centering and distance (Fig. 1). At the base of the coupling cone, a suction ring allowed the application of a low-level vacuum and enabled the cone to maintain contact with the eye. A 30-mm diameter, 15-mm high ring containing six active piezoelectric elements was inserted in the upper part of the coupling cone. The cavity created between the eye, the cone, and the probe (4 mL) was filled through the central aperture of the device with room temperature saline solution (BSS, Alcon Inc., Fort Worth, TX). Each of the six transducers was a segment of a 10.2-mm radius cylinder with a 4.5-mm width and a 7-mm length (active surface area, approximately 35 mm2). The focal volume of each transducer has approximately an elliptic cylinder shape. The axial length of the focal zone is 1.2 mm (major section of the ...
Supplementation with high-dose EPA/DHA concentrate resulted in significant modifications of fatty acids, particularly a significant improvement in the AA:EPA ratio in the isolated plasma phospholipids and improvements in behavior assessed by a psychiatrist (blinded to protocol adherence and supplement dosage adjustments) in this small pilot sample of children with ADHD.. At baseline fatty acid analysis of the isolated plasma phospholipids from the children in this study were similar to that of previous studies of children with ADHD and thirst/skin symptoms of EFA deficiency [3,5,11]; however, we did not assess EFA deficiency symptoms. Children with ADHD and thirst/skin symptoms of EFA deficiency had lower AA and DHA levels in the plasma phospholipids compared to control groups. Both the AA and DHA mean levels from previous studies [3,5,11] were within the 95% CI (8.98-10.05; 1.63-2.97, respectively) of this studys mean AA and DHA levels.. Supplementation of high-dose EPA/DHA concentrates ...

In this study, we examined audiovisual (AV) processing in normal and visually impaired individuals who exhibit partial loss of vision due to inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs). Two groups were analyzed for this pilot study: Group 1 was composed of IRD participants: two with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP), two with autosomal recessive cone-rod dystrophy (CORD), and two with the related complex disorder, Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS); Group 2 was composed of 15 non-IRD participants (controls). Audiovisual looming and receding stimuli (conveying perceptual motion) were used to assess the cortical processing and integration of unimodal (A or V) and multimodal (AV) sensory cues. Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to simultaneously resolve the temporal and spatial characteristics of AV processing and assess differences in neural responses between groups. Measurement of AV integration was accomplished via quantification of the EEGs spectral power and event-related brain potentials (ERPs).

CX717 is an ampakine compound created by Christopher Marrs and Gary Rogers in 1996 at Cortex Pharmaceuticals. It affects the neurotransmitter glutamate, with trials showing the drug improves cognitive functioning and memory. In 2005 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted Cortex Pharmaceuticals Investigational New Drug (IND) application to initiate pilot Phase II clinical trials in the United States. Also, in 2005, the United States Department of Defense funded a study to look into CX717 and the physiological effects of sleepiness. The study found that rhesus monkeys performed faster and better after receiving the drug, and it counteracted the effects of sleep deprivation. However, a 2006 study funded by DARPA found that CX717 did not improve cognitive performance in humans subjected to simulated night shift work. In early March 2006 Cortex reported that, in a small pilot Phase II study, CX717 had demonstrated positive clinical and statistical results on the primary endpoint, the ...
Correspondence issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins In August 2004, pursuant to Section 1111 of the fiscal year 2001 Department of Defense authorization act, the Secretary of Defense authorized components of the United States Air Force (USAF), the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), and the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) to implement an equal employment opportunity (EEO) complaint pilot program to reengineer the EEO complaint process to, among other things, reduce complaint processing time and reinforce management accountability. The program was exempt from the procedural requirements of 29 C.F.R. Part 1614 and other regulations, directives, or regulatory restrictions prescribed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). As required by the legislation, in May 2006, GAO reported on the implementation of the pilot programs and found that two of the three pilot initiatives operated consistent with existing EEOC requirements, with a specific emphasis on
Numerous studies based on registry data have suggested that multiple arterial grafting in CABG patients provides a survival benefit over conventional CABG performed with a LIMA graft to the LAD and saphenous veins [2-5]. However, there have been few randomized studies have addressed this question [7,8]. In fact, this paucity of high-level evidence supporting the use of multiple arterial grafts may be responsible at least in part to the limited adoption of multiple arterial grafts. This lack of adoption is best illustrated by the fact that less than 5% of CABG patients in the STS database receive multiple arterial grafts [6].. The objective of the present pilot study was to look at the feasibility of conducting such a randomized study comparing grafting strategies. We defined feasibility as the ability to recruit a reasonable proportion of patients and to ensure that the majority would complete the follow-up. The recruitment was set at 20% of eligible patients, which represents a conservative ...

Responding to feedback gains you converts who can win over others in a department adopting a new workflow. These converts are also an invaluable resource for explaining the benefits of change when new content processes are implemented across a company.. This is particularly true if you start with a pilot project that affects just one department (or a smaller segment of a big department). The pilot project enables a core group to develop a process and work out any kinks before expanding the changes across the organization. The participants in the pilot then act as "evangelists" who explain process change to other employees as the new workflow is rolled out to other groups.. These evangelists can gather feedback from the new groups and work with the process implementers to address department-specific challenges and any newly identified deficiencies in the overall process. Feedback from those who were not involved in the pilot can sometimes uncover issues the primary participants ...

By Roderick Benns Publisher of Leaders and Legacies, a social purpose news site. Retired Conservative Senator Michael Meighen says its time for governments to set up pilot projects across Canada to give a basic income guarantee a chance as future policy. In an interview with Leaders and Legacies in Toronto, Meighen says the idea is "very attractive on paper" so it will be important to follow this through with real-world testing.. "Thats where pilot projects come in - we have to test it," says Meighen, who notes that if the pilots are successful, then the policy becomes easier to sell, politically.. Meighen, who is also a well-known lawyer and philanthropist, is the second prominent Tory to speak out recently about a basic income guarantee. Retired Conservative Senator Hugh Segal spoke to Leaders and Legacies recently about this issue, and Segal has been a long-time proponent of the policy.. Meighen points out that when he was a Conservative candidate in Montreal, running to be an MP in the ...

Proposals will be reviewed by an independent committee of faculty members who will consider scientific merit, innovation, importance for future application to human nervous system disease, potential for external funding, and ability to advance the overall goals of the Hope ...
Improving the quality of apprenticeship systems and increasing the number of apprentices is key for the present and future well-being of the construction sector. For this reason EBC met MEP Jean Arthuis, who has launched the idea of a pilot project on the mobility of apprentices. This initiative aims at allowing apprentices to complete their professional training with a long-term period abroad. This experimental mechanism will identify the obstacles for apprentices mobility thanks to the experience of the VET centres taking part in the project. The European Commission published the call for proposals for the pilot project at the end of February. The deadline to submit proposals is 15 April 2015. The total budget is of around €2 million and the actions are expected to start in September 2016. The call for proposals targets VET centres and companies. Employers organisations may also take part as associate organisations. Today there are 28 statuses for apprenticeship in the European Union. The ...
The general interest in sustainable - or green - options is growing. This includes the interest in water, one of our most important renewable resources. Water drives the health of our environment, but its functioning is often fundamentally misunderstood. This web page features the 168 Elm Ave. Pilot Project, which demonstrates sustainable rain water, stormwater, and runoff treatments at a residential scale. It offers resources that help fill the information gap by offering accessible, in-the-ground examples that demonstrate the feasibility of and confidence in sustainable landscape solutions.. Seven different treatments are incorporated into the pilot project: 1) the GREEN ROOF, 2) the RAIN BARRELS, 3) the POROUS PAVEMENT, 4) the RAIN GARDENS, 5) the GRAVEL GRASS, 6) the CISTERN, and 7) the BIOSWALE.. These treatments serve as milestones on a VIRTUAL TOUR AROUND THE HOUSE. The web page explains in detail the rationales of the applied sustainable practices, describes the benefits of each ...

by Alex Denonville. The recent announcement that the provincial government will fund a basic income pilot project had Windsors politicians clamouring to make the case that our city, struggling with chronically high unemployment and persistent poverty, was the perfect proving ground for a seemingly radical approach to public spending.. While pushing for the pilot project was an opportunity any elected leader would take, its perhaps a signal that their often-touted dedication to creating jobs and reducing unemployment is at odds with the trends of a changing world.. It was the auto industry that made Windsor what it is today, a manufacturing haven heavy on blue collar workers. But nowadays those assembly lines have taken on an increasingly robotic look, with companies pushing to increase the bottom line through automation.. And its not just on the line. Many facets of production are trending towards removing humans from their equation. From Japans first-ever robotic farming operation all the ...

METHODS AND RESULTS Seven thousand patients with acute myocardial infarction and a duration of symptoms of less than 6 hours were to be randomized to receive intravenous heparin (70 IU/kg body wt bolus and 15 IU.kg-1.h-1) or hirudin (0.4 mg/kg body wt bolus and 0.15 mg.kg-1.h-1) infused over 48 to 72 hours and adjusted to an activated partial thromboplastin time of 2 to 3.5 times baseline values. In a pilot phase, 1000 patients receiving front-loaded alteplase for thrombolysis were to be recruited by 93 German centers. After enrollment of 302 patients, the trial was stopped after an increased rate of intracranial bleeding was observed in the hirudin group (5 of 148, 3.4%) compared with the heparin group (0 of 154). The overall stroke rate was 3.4% in the hirudin group and 1.3% in the heparin group. Other major bleeding occurred in five versus three patients and ventricular rupture occurred in three versus one patient in the hirudin and heparin groups, respectively. There were 19 in-hospital ...

The quality of the research of this small open label pilot study is excellent. Pre-specified criteria for success were set for outcome measures at endpoint of study. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview was conducted at screening to confirm GAD diagnosis using DSM-IV criteria. Patients were eligible for the study if they met a cut-off score of , 16 on the HAM-A and a score , I7 on HAM-D17. All subjects followed the same specific CES treatment protocol related to duration and frequency of treatments, time during the day of treatments and use of an Alpha-Stim CES device with a setting at 300 µA. This study has the limitations of an open label small pilot study, such as the small number of subjects. The authors also state because the small N of the study, the placebo effect associated with GAD could be a confounding variable. The value of this study is that it forms a basis for a large randomized controlled trial on the effect of CES on GAD. This study is also valuable because the ...

Advanced specialist practitioner in the late effects of pelvic radiation Liz Walne, who is leading on the project, explained: "While radiotherapy is becoming increasingly effective as a treatment, for some patients, being cured of cancer can come at a sacrifice to their quality of life.. "For too long, both patients and clinicians have accepted the symptoms of PRD as a trade-off As a result, symptoms are under reported, not properly assessed and mismanaged.". Liz continued: "Through our pilot specialist service, our aim is to identify and treat PRD to resolve or improve symptoms and thereby improve quality of life. We want the project to provide a foundation on which to develop a business case for permanent funding for the service, including all relevant trusts, once a better understanding of it is achieved.". Dan Hill, Rosemere Cancer Foundations chief officer, said: "We are proud to support such an important pilot project that is raising awareness of and seeking to treat PRD, a condition that ...

Two important limitations of our study were the small sample size and the lack of PAH exposure data. Because of the small sample size, single observations in this study may have large potential influence on our findings. Our results need to be interpreted cautiously until consistent findings are observed in similar studies with larger populations. We observed an increase in PAH metabolite levels during work, but we could not determine the relative contribution of occupational exposure sources for this increase. A future study with personal exposure measures would allow us to identify different sources of variation of PAH exposures and possibly strengthen the association between occupational exposure and DNA damage. Despite these important limitations, we were able to observe statistically significant associations between 8-OHdG and 1-OHPyr after 6 h of work. 1-OHPyr is the main metabolite of pyrene and has been widely accepted as the gold standard of biomarkers of exposure to PAHs.55 ,56 In this ...

As increasing numbers of adolescents become involved in online activities, many also become victims of cyberharassment. This pilot project investigates how a program teaching coping skills (Best of Coping program, BOC) and a program teaching cybersafety (Cyber Savvy Teens program, CST) can optimise adolescents capacity to cope online. Thirty-three adolescents were divided into three groups: control, BOC and CST. Participants completed a questionnaire on cyberknowledge and habits preprogram; the Adolescent Coping scale and the Kessler Psychological Distress scale (K-10) pre- and post-program; and a program evaluation form post-program. Participants in both intervention groups demonstrated improvements in their overall mental health and in making better online choices post-program. The BOC program was found to be a better program for improving general coping than CST alone, while the CST program was better at tackling cyberspecific issues.
Background: Genotype announcements related to susceptibility to hazardous effects of smoking may be effective ‍to induce smoking cessation. ‍Methods: Subjects were municipal government employees, 63 young smokers employed in the previous year and ‍59 smokers with more than 45 pack-years, who were invited to educational sessions against smoking held in December ‍2003 and February 2004, respectively. In the session, those who wished genetic susceptibility tests (GSTM1, GSTT1, ‍and NQO1 C609T) were enrolled in the study. The smoking habit was ascertained three times: at the session, one ‍month later, just before the genotype announcement, and at the follow-up three months after the announcement. ‍Results: Fifty eight (92.1%) and 49 (83.1%) smokers participated in the study, respectively. One out of 58 smokers ‍was not a habitual smoker, so was not included in the analysis. The smoking cessation rates were 15.8% (9 participants) ‍and 6.1% (3 participants) just before the genotype

ABIDJAN-- More than 10,000 vulnerable households in Abobo and Yopougon will receive an SMS text message on their mobiles alerting them to the transaction and allowing them to withdraw money from local cash points of the telecoms provider MTN. The districts were badly affected in the post-election crisis and the poorest families struggle to put food on the table.. "This innovative method of payment is particularly suited to households with low purchasing power," said Alain Cordeil, WFP Country Director in Côte dIvoire. "WFP increasingly delivers assistance to the hungry in the form of cash transfers in urban areas where there is food in the markets but the poorest people just cannot afford to buy it.". The goal of this pilot project is to make up for the loss of purchasing power of the poorest families in recent months, to give them access to a wider choice of food available in local markets. Beneficiaries have been given SIM cards that enabled them to receive their first transfer. The second ...

Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have been applied as control commands in numerous humanrobot interface systems and have been deployed for rehabilitation or clinical applications. Although lots of previous workers have tried to determine features appropriate for specific sEMG-signal classification problems, little of this work has involved deeply searching for the inner characteristics of the signals. In this study, we try to evaluate the properties of the transient state of sEMG signals on randomly mounted, dry-type electrodes and use this to rapidly predict three kinds of hand configurations - rock, scissors and paper motions. In experiments, subjects performed a rock-scissor-paper game with a virtual hand. For data acquisition, the sEMG signals were sampled at 1 kHz with eightchannel electrodes (wearable, dry type) that were randomly mounted on forearms [2]. The results verified that the proposed algorithm, using the property of the transient state of sEMG signals, works successfully ...
