The oil exhibited anticancer activities against MCF-7 (breast cancer) and NCI-H187 (small cell lung cancer) with the IC50 values of 23.17 and 49.07 μg/mL, respectively. It exhibited antituberculosis activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra with the MIC value of 50.0 μg/mL and it also showed moderately antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the MIC values of 118 μg/mL.

Since the industrial revolution, the abundance of hydrocarbons derived from anthropogenic sources (petroleum hydrocarbons) has increased significantly in aquatic systems. Natural oil seeps and erosion of bitumen deposits can also contribute to hydrocarbon abundance and composition in systems. These petroleum hydrocarbons can be distinguished from biological hydrocarbons by their absence of odd-carbon chain lengths commonly found in biological hydrocarbons and the greater structural diversity found in petroleum hydrocarbons. The chapter focuses on naturally produced hydrocarbons. It provides examples of how aliphatic and isoprenoid hydrocarbons have been successfully used to distinguish between algal, bacterial, and terrigenous vascular plant sources of carbon in aquatic systems. Particulate organic matter was collected from surface waters at six time points throughout the spring and summer of 2015, and δ2H values of short-chain fatty acids, as well as chlorophyll-derived phytol and the diatom biomarker brassicasterol, were measured. We paired these measurements with in situ incubations conducted with NaH13CO3, which were used to calculate the production rates of individual lipids in lake surface water. As algal productivity increased from April to June, net discrimination against 2H in Lake Greifen increased by as much as 148 ‰ for individual fatty acids. Thespesia populnea (Linn.) Sol. ex Correa (Malvaceae) is commonly known as Portia tree. Plant is well known for its medicinal importance. In the present study, attempt has been made to characterise the oil isolated from leaves of T. populnea. The pale yellow color oil was isolated from the n- hexane fraction of total methanolic extract of leaves of T. populnea by column chromatography. Isolated oil was characterised by FT-IR, 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3), 13C NMR (125 MHz, CDCl3), and GC-MS analysis. From the structural data and its comparison with reported literature, isolated compound was identified and confirmed as Phytol. This is a first report on isolation of acyclic diterpene alcohol from the Thespesia populnea Linn plant.

Chloroplasts generate important cellular signals and synthesize diverse products. The chloroplast-localized protein, Nitric Oxide Associated-1 (NOA1), is implicated in nitric oxide (NO) accumulation and linked to the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway, but its role is undefined. I report that NOA1 is not essential for NO accumulation because the noa1 mutant accumulates NO when provided sucrose-supplemented media. Eclipta prostrata, an aromatic plant, is known in Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of various kidney diseases. In the present study, the volatile components were isolated from the aerial parts of this plant by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-MS. A total of 55 compounds, which were the major part (91.7%) of the volatiles, were identified by matching mass spectra with a mass spectrum library (NIST 05.L). The main components were as follows: heptadecane (14.78%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-pentadecanone (12.80%), n-hexadecanoic acid (8.98%), pentadecane (8.68%), eudesma-4(14),11-diene (5.86%), phytol (3.77%), octadec-9-enoic acid (3.35%), 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid diisooctyl ester (2.74%), (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (2.36%), (Z)-7,11-dimethyl-3-methylene-1,6,10-dodecatriene (2.08%) and (Z,Z,Z)-1,5,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4,7-cycloundecatriene (2.07%). Taxonomic studies were performed on a phenotypically homogeneous group of 13 mycobacteria isolated from clinical, veterinary and stream-water samples. The methods applied included chromatographic analyses of bacterial lipids, biochemical tests and sequencing of the 16S rDNA and the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region. Positive results in urease, Tween 80 hydrolysis and pyrazinamidase tests and a negative result in a semi-quantitative catalase test, combined with the ability to grow at 42 degrees C, distinguished this group among the yellow-pigmented, slowly growing mycobacteria. Unique fatty acid and mycolic acid profiles in chromatographic analyses and the results of gene sequencing indicated that the novel isolates represent a previously undescribed species, for which the name Mycobacterium palustre sp. nov. is proposed.
