Doc Susie: The truth of Colorado Women Physicians & Giveaway - Petticoats & Pistols
Between 1870 and 1880 Colorado saw the arrival of many physicians, which included a number of women. This may have in part been due to Colorado being touted for a climate known for helping those who suffered from consumption. Note, consumption was not just TB, but any wasting disease. There was another spurt from 1890-1900. Yes, many of these women congregated in the larger towns, to include the boom towns of Leadville, Cripple Creek and Victor. Once the floodgates were opened, women physicians made their way to Colorado. Many became involved in the suffrage movement, while others worked to better the conditions of others. Dr. Caroline Spencer of Colorado Springs and Dr. Alida Avery worked for the rights of women. Dr. Mary Helen Barker Bates helped start a hospital in Leadville. Dr. Kate Yont worked in the Italian community with the naturalization process in Denver. Some carried guns, others didnt have to, but all have stories waiting to be told.. So you see, while the story of Dr. Susan Doc ...

Immediately thereafter, the first woman doctor was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps; Dr. Margaret D. Craighill, dean of Womens Medical College from 1940-1946, was given leave to take up her post. After her appointment, she encouraged newly-minted women doctors to consider a military career. (A small aside - this clipping and photo detailing Dr. Craighills 1944 WMC commencement address advice is particularly interesting, given that many Japanese-Americans were still in internment camps - and Dr. Toshiko Toyota, a native of Utah, overcame considerable adversity in her medical school career, according to notes in the Faculty Minutes - there were several attempts to have her expelled ...

Obesity Tied to Increased Risk for Early-Onset CRC in Women | Physicians Weekly
MONDAY, Nov. 26, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Obesity is associated with an increased risk for early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) among women, according to a study recently published in JAMA Oncology.. Po-Hong Liu, M.D., M.P.H., from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and colleagues used data from women aged 25 to 42 years at enrollment in 1989 in the Nurses Health Study II to identify 85,256 women free of cancer and inflammatory bowel disease at enrollment. Follow-up lasted through Dec. 31, 2011.. The researchers found 114 cases of early-onset CRC during the study period (median age at diagnosis, 45 years). For overweight women (body mass index [BMI], 25 to 29.9 kg/m²), the multivariable relative risk (RR) was 1.37 (95 percent confidence interval [CI], 0.81 to 2.3), and for obese women (BMI, ≥30 kg/m²), it was 1.93 (95 percent CI, 1.15 to 3.25 kg/m²), compared with women with a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 kg/m². For each five-unit increment in BMI, the RR was 1.2 (P = 0.01 for trend). This ...
The Book Shelf: Women Physicians in Medieval and Ancient Times by James J. Walsh 1911
In spite of all this time-taking correspondence, she found leisure to write a series of books, most of them on mystical subjects, but two of them on medical subjects. The first is called Liber Simplicis Medicinæ, and the second Liber Compositæ Medicinæ. These books were written in order to provide information mainly for the nuns who had charge of the infirmaries of the monasteries of the Benedictines. Almost constantly someone in the large communities, which always contained aged religious, was ailing, and then, besides, there were other calls on the time and the skill of the sister infirmarians. There were no hotels at that time, and no hospitals, except in the large cities. There were always guest houses in connection with monasteries and convents, in which travellers were permitted to pass the night, and given what they needed to eat. There are many people who have had experiences of monastic hospitality even in our own time. Sometimes travellers fell ill. Not infrequently the reason ...
Helping Faculty Find Work-Life Balance: The Path Toward Family-Friendly Institutions | Leadership Administration & Policy ...
Helping Faculty Find Work-Life Balance gives voice to faculty and reveals the myriad personal and professional issues faculty face over the span of their academic careers. Based on years of in-the-field research and two gender-based studies, Maike Ingrid Philipsen and Timothy Bostic give the issue of work-life balance a fresh perspective by taking a comparative approach to the topic in regard to both gender and career stage. The authors research reports on the experiences of male and female faculty at early-, mid-, and late-career stages. In addition, the book goes beyond the typical family-friendly approach and takes an all-encompassing life-friendly view, recognizing the need to strive for balance in the lives of all faculty members.. Philipsen and Bostic describe enablers and obstacles that faculty encounter during their careers and how policies and programs might more effectively address the needs of faculty. Helping Faculty Find Work-Life Balance is filled with illustrative cases ...
Women doctors and their careers in a large university hospital in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century | Human Resources...
This study shows significant differences between women and men holding permanent/staff medical positions, with differences progressively increasing in relation to the grade of advance in hierarchical promotion, and also in PC promotion. This implies that despite the proportion of women among training specialists having increased up to 50%, the bias in favour of men after completion of their specialist training could be due to the selection criteria for permanent positions. Thus, when women physicians thereafter apply for PC promotion, they have not yet obtained a permanent position, delaying the time for promotion in comparison to that of men physicians with similar years of professional experience. Using a statistical model to evaluate factors associated with the continuous career progression of medical women compared to men over a 13-year study period, the probability of promotion decreased with the year of the application and the age of the applicant, except in women. The absence of a ...
The View from Hell: April 2008
Because people cannot conceive of wanting to die, they come up with all kinds of far-fetched explanations for suicide-related statistics. For example, Eva Schernhammer and Graham Colditzs review of twenty-five studies about doctors who committed suicide revealed that women doctors commit suicide at about twice the rate of women in the general population. In some studies, the women physicians suicide rate approached parity with the rate of men in the general population (men commit suicide about four times as often as women, though women attempt suicide more often). Schernhammer proposed that a possible reason for the result could be gender bias in the medical profession. However, this theory does not explain the studys other result, which is that male doctors have a 41% increased risk of suicide over men in the general population. When we see more data - for instance, that British veterinarians have a suicide rate four times that of the general population, or that women chemists also commit ...

Doctor under fire for saying female physicians do not work as hard | KCFJ 570 Radio Network
A North Texas doctor entered a firestorm of backlash for his comments over the pay gap between male and female physicians. CBSDFW reports that Dr. Gary Tigges is quoted in the Dallas Medical Journal, saying there is a pay gap because female physicians do not work as hard.. This is because they choose to, or they simply dont want to be rushed, or they dont want to work the long hours, Dr. Tigges is quoted saying.. Since the backlash ensued and the comments were posted on social media, Dr. Tigges released a statement of apology for those comments.. I sincerely apologize to all female physicians for my comments and the pain they have caused, Dr. Tigges said in a statement to CBSDFW.. The chair of the Dallas County Medical Societys communication committee said they had a decision to make when deciding whether to publish the comments from Dr. Tigges after receiving them.. We had a decision to make; do we publish it, or ignore it? After considering the purpose of the series, we decided to ...

Female medical leadership: cross sectional study Editorial by Showalter | The BMJ
Although the present study on careers of female physicians shows that few women reach senior positions, an encouraging finding, considering the steady increase in female medical graduates, is that the proportion of women in any medical specialty may be a determinant for female leadership. Nevertheless, there was no increased probability for leadership positions among the new generation of female physicians.. Because the medical career structure has been slow to adapt to the changing profile of medicine5 it has been questioned whether female physicians have the same opportunities as their male colleagues or if they are exposed to barriers which mean that they are likely to have a secondary role. 3-5 In addition to individual constraints such as family preferences and lack of leadership ambitions,6-8 attention has been drawn to structural constraints as the explanation of why female physicians who aspire to top positions meet invisible barriers. Deficiencies in career advice and counselling from ...

Female Physician, Better Care? Provocative New Study Suggests Men and Women Practice Different Medicine | tctmd.com
Do men and women practice medicine differently? A new study suggests the answer is most definitely yes, and it also reveals that those differences can benefit patients of female physicians in the form of fewer deaths and hospital readmissions.. The findings, published online earlier this week in JAMA Internal Medicine, provide insight into patterns of care and bolster mounting evidence that the gender of the treating physician has considerable influence.. Our study adds that these variations in practice patterns between men and women doctors, which have been reported in other studies, result in meaningful differences in outcomes and [shows] that we have to think seriously about why this is happening, lead author Yusuke Tsugawa, MD, MPH, PhD (Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Cambridge, MA), said in an interview with TCTMD.. Tsugawa and colleagues analyzed a random sample of 1,583,028 Medicare patients who were hospitalized between 2011 and 2014 for eight different medical conditions ...

Gender Bias Narratives in Medicine | Physicians Weekly
Where Do We Go Now?. The vulnerability and experiences women shared in response to Dr. Stieglers tweet demonstrate what its like to be a woman physician in 2019. While there may be less overt sexism now than in the past, women continue to be treated as second-class citizens. Women of color, transgender men and women, and members of the LGBTQIA community all face additional obstacles over and above those faced by white women.. As in other fields, there is growing recognition of the potential benefits of diversity for patient care. In recent years, several studies have suggested that women may provide better care for patients than do men. One study evaluated the outcomes of patients admitted to hospitals with common problems such as pneumonia or heart failure. Patients who were taken care of by women were less likely to require hospital readmission and were less likely to die within 30 days of their hospitalization. A similar study looked at the outcomes of patients operated on by men and women ...

I Say What I Mean, but I Dont Say it Meanly: Breaking up with my uterus: Hysterectomy here I come
My uterus and I began our real partnership 33 years ago, when I had my first child at the age of 17. Many people dont know that fact about me, and I am certainly not ashamed of it. So you see, I first began my relationship with my uterus when I was pregnant with my first son. I have three children and all of them were delivered by doctors in the same practice, the one I have been going to for the past 33 years. At the time my last child was delivered, there were three male doctors and one female doctor. All three of my children were delivered by the male doctors, which was not planned but just the luck of the draw. Guess who will be performing my hysterectomy? The female doctor. She will be the one who will close out the chapter of my reproductive life. The circle will be complete. The other three doctors delivered my precious children, and the final doctor is the one who will be delivering me from my ongoing issues with my uterus. ...

he increasing presence of women is one of the most notable physician workforce trends. Women accounted for a quarter of all patient-care physicians in 2004-05, up from 18 percent in 1996-97 (see Table 2). Female physicians are much more prevalent in primary care more than one in three primary care physicians is a woman, compared with 22 percent of medical specialists and 17 percent of surgeons. And, among female physicians in 2004-05, half practiced in primary care, one-third in medical specialties, and only 17 percent in surgical specialties (see Table 3). Since the mid-1990s, there has been little change in the distribution of female physicians among the categories of primary care, medical specialties and surgical specialties. Instead, the migration of male physicians toward medical specialties and away from primary care and surgical specialties has largely been responsible for the specialty shifts in the overall physician population. A 40 percent increase in the supply of female primary care ...

Managers: The Key to Positive Work-Life Balance - Paul Artale, PhD ~ Work-Life and Motivation Expert
A job in itself does not sentence a person to long hours, family conflict and a generally unhappy life. Sure, some lines of work require more hours or intensive types of work but the boundaries and expectations related to our jobs are influenced heavily by one group of people: managers.. Managers are the ones who regulate hours, workload, and set the tone as to what is appropriate in terms of work and personal life. Sure, we have company policies but quite often it is up to the manager to interpret that policy. Beyond policy, the standards employees are evaluated on (whether they be billable hours, output goals, clients called etc) are created by some level management. At some point, somebody in the hierarchy said we value this if people want to get promoted or raises. Spread the word. Once that word is spread then a culture begins to form.. Here are some things for those in managerial roles to consider as it relates to their ability to impact work-life balance for employees.. 1) Controlling ...
Work-life balance - thats so 2008 (in fact its from the 70s) - Atos
Whilst most would agree that a healthy work-life balance is essential to gain the most out of employees, and of course personal wellbeing, the advent of social networking and a more technologically savvy workforce means the focus must now include work-life behaviours.. - Consumerisation and in particular social networking mean greater access to technology, higher expectations;. - When does work end and life start? The dichotomy isnt so pronounced - more a sliding scale. Enabled by new technology and different work priorities (at least for some).. Given the above we need to take an approach which is a bit more sophisticated than to say the standard working week is 35 hours (and when was the last time you worked 35 hours in a week when you worked the full 5 days??). We need to think about how employees behave in the hours they are working and what the outputs or outcomes of their labour is, rather than simply clocking up time.. Additionally we need to think about the flexibility that employees as ...

History of Contraception-Douching and Spermicides
Advertisements used the vague term Feminine Hygiene and continued to sell douching kits and solutions. The Lysol disinfectant douche became a top-selling feminine hygiene product from the 1930s through the 1960s. The douching kits were inexpensive and readily available from drug and grocery stores. Full-page advertisements featuring eminent women physicians endorsing such products appeared in many womens magazines. Many douching solutions proved ineffective as spermicidals. Some even had toxic effects that inflamed, irritated or even burned the vagina and cervix. Today douching is not recognized as a birth control method. It is considered harmful as it alters the natural healthy state of the vagina. ...

I am new to this forum but have been lurking here since September 2013. I am a 46 year old female family physician living in Canadas winter city. I wanted to thank you Dr. Will for your wonderful post that I read a long time ago that really helped me to calm down when I started experiencing fasciculations EVERYWHERE following a severe viral illness at the end of September 2013. I also read BFS in a nutshell also very informative. Being a physician, I felt compelled to look up information on Upto Date, a medical database for information regarding twitching-and wouldnt you know it up came ALS-no better than Dr. Google really since there were only a very few lines about BFS. Needless to say, never having experienced anything like this in the past (twitching, cramping, weakness, fatigue) I also went on the ALS forum. I have a second cousin who died of ALS in 2011 at my age, a high school classmate who died at age 45 in 2012 after living with the disease for 7 years, a high school chemistry ...

Women face sticky floor, not glass ceiling after children - Legal Futures
Women lawyers returning to work after maternity leave face not so much a glass ceiling as a sticky floor and should recognise that a perfect work-life balance is impossible, a conference was told last week.. A panel of high-powered barristers and solicitors - among them QCs, partners in large City law firms and judges - spoke candidly about their careers at the launch event for Cambridge Women in Law, an event coinciding with the centenary of the passing of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, when women were finally allowed to practise law.. But there was a consensus that women should be ambitious and unapologetic about the demands they faced relative to male colleagues.. Jessica Gladstone, a partner at Clifford Chance, said that returning after giving birth meant facing the cruel reality that the world has moved on without you and you were dispensable, effectively.. She continued: Trying to find your voice again and your role again… is a particularly challenging time. That ...
Dr. Anita Figueredo dies at 93; first female surgeon in San Diego
Figueredo was born in 1916 in Costa Rica where her father, Roberto Figueredo, was a noted soccer player who abandoned the family. Family lore said she proclaimed a desire to be a doctor at age 5. Since there were no female doctors -- and, indeed, no medical school -- in Costa Rica, her mother moved with her to New York, settling in a Spanish Harlem tenement where she worked two jobs as a seamstress to support her daughters ambitions.. ...

When faith and health care clash for French Muslims
The issue of Muslims demanding exceptions at state hospitals has been an issue in France since 2003, when the Stasi Commission (whose hearings led to the headscarf ban in state schools) heard doctors say a growing number of Muslim men refused to let male doctors treat their wives. There were stories of fistfights between husbands and doctors - including one non-fatal stabbing - and husbands driving from emergency room to emergency room searching for a female doctor to treat a wife in desperate need of medical attention. But while these stories appeared from time to time in the media, it was hard to get clear facts on specific cases. My impression was that there was a definate problem, with some very worrying cases, but it was not as widespread as the French media seemed to say it was.. This is a clear case that has gone through the legal system. I think the judge was 100% correct in not only rejecting this suit but throwing the blame back on that irresponsible fathers shoulders. He - and his ...

a witty female doctor: August 2013
As I was walking out of the multiplex, I overheard a couple of teenagers discussing I wanna donate my eyes and I was glad to hear that. But in the next instant, her friend admonished this young girl saying dekha nahi doctor log paise ke liye organ bech dalte hain. aur uparse new eye se usko khas fayda bhi nahi hua,(translation= doctors sell organs for money..plus the eye was of not much use to the photographer girl). I know that an artist or a writer is free to portray his/her interpretation of things and the audience is free to draw conclusions. It was an erroneous assumption on part of those teenagers and Your team is not responsible for it. But, the powerful ending of this film depicting several beneficiaries of a single mans organs could bring about a tectonic shift in the thought process relating to organ donation. Cinema is a very mighty force for bringing about change in thought process. It can be a harbinger of change, usher in new ideas and surely ship of theseus has made an impact. ...

October 2012 - thinkspace
Most entrepreneurs and founders know - and strive - for work-life balance; that middle ground between keeping productivity up at the office and maintaining a healthy environment at home. But this idea implies that work is separate from life, and that a unique portion of time is devoted to each.. But what if you could integrate life into work, and vice versa? This trend of work-life integration, instead of work-life balance, is becoming more idealistic as entrepreneurs and founders are becoming not only more of the norm, but starting to face the realities of growing companies - and growing families.. The New York Times recently published an article explaining this new trend of work-life integration, especially as Silicon Valley businesses begin to offer perks that extend beyond the workplace and into the homes of the employees. Perks given by companies like Evernote, Facebook, and the Stanford School of Medicine aimed to reduce employees overall stress at both work and home, so that employees ...

Greater Boston Legal Services Archives - Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation
By Lonnie Powers. Heres an economic statistic that holds true in almost every part of the world: women are significantly more likely to be poor than men. In the United States, 16 percent of women live below the federal poverty line, compared with 12 percent of men.. Why is this? When we think about gender inequality in the workplace, its often in the context of the wage gap, the well-documented phenomenon of women making less than their male colleagues for the same amount of work. Though more American women are finishing college these days than men, a woman with a bachelors degree can still expect to take home a lower salary than a man with the same degree. Averaging incomes across the nation, women make about 78.3 cents for every dollar earned by men. President Obama, who signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law at the very beginning of his first term, has often called for measures to close the wage gap; however, income averages have moved very little over the past seven years, even ...

Sorcery of Scent: Gaultier: It takes two...
I can say this now in hindsight, but a few years back when I was first offered my promotional uniform for the launch of Gaultier2, I was less than thrilled. When fashion maestro Jean Paul Gaultier unleashed his first unisex scent onto the world stage, he obviously wanted to do it with all the flamboyance and flair for which he is renowned. Gaultier2 was all about people coming together... succumbing to the magnetic attraction within. But for me - a man who faced public humiliation with hairy knees exposed - all I could focus on at the time were my jeering male colleagues, and pervy granny shoppers wielding hooked umbrella handles. But somehow, over the course of launch week, I managed to avoid a small army of skirt-chasing girls - and guys, - and grew to appreciate this incredible scent ...
Khonds - Wikipedia
The Kondh are adept land dwellers exhibiting greater adaptability to the forest and hill environment. However, due to development interventions in education, medical facilities, irrigation, plantation and so on, they are forced into the modern way of life in many ways. Their traditional life style, customary traits of economy, political organization, norms, values and world view have been drastically changed in recent times. The traditional Kondh Society is based on geographically demarcated clans, each consisting of a large group of related families identified by a Totem, usually of a male wild animal. Each clan usually has a common surname, and is led by the Eldest male member of the most powerful family of the clan. All the clans of the Kondhs owe allegiance to the Kondh Pradhan, who is usually the leader of the most powerful clan of the Kondhs.[citation needed] The Kondh family is often nuclear, although extended joint families are also found. Female family members are on equal social ...

Fugue for Tinhorns: May 2010
Hip 209: Chestnut colt by Catienus-Keep Your Day Job, by Abaginone. In hindsight, Im not 100 percent sure why this boy didnt land on the Priority 1 list, but mostly it had to do with a relative lack of type -- not just black type, but any text -- on his page. The PA-bred and Eddie Woods consignee is the first foal from his dam (who was stakes-placed for more than $100K lifetime) and his second dam bore only five foals to race, most of them by utter-bust sires. His third dam, stakes-placed on grass in France, bore five to race and got three winners, but no stakes horses. Still, quite simply put, Catienus upgrades mares. And thats when compared to decent sires. For a female family that of late has seen nothing but the lowest grade of stallion, he might really provide a useful racehorse out of what seems like a black hole of talent. This colt might only have breezed 23.3, but he had good bone, a cool head under inspection, and a fairly racy look. The sire gets 82 percent runners, 61 percent ...
