From a holistic health viewpoint, the effect of stress on the extracellular matrix (ECM) is very important as cortisol plays a dominant role in the natural degradation and repair process of the ECM. The diurnal rhythm of cortisol should be such that it ebbs around midnight where a slight inflammatory state clears up any diseased tissue that has been excreted from within the cells and thus transferred into the ECM. These unwanted toxins can then be drained by the blood and lymph. Insomnia due to stresses such as domestic and occupational worry will disturb this vital cycle, keeping cortisol levels too high at night. The important matrix cleansing action cannot take place. If degradation and repair are disturbed in the ECM, we will see matrix rigidity that will prevent proper cell to cell and matrix to cell communication. This will result in cellular disease and eventually dedifferentiation. Cortisol may also adversely alter the correct mitochondrial function and its prolonged secretion can ...

Our friendships immensely influenced our entire well-being and we might not be even aware of it. One of the many reasons we should celebrate with our besties on this special day is the health benefits we reap from them and vice versa, because friendship works both ways. So what are the positive effects of friends on our health?. 1. Friendship is good for the heart.. According to the Journal of the National Medical Association, friendships, just like other types of social support groups, help alleviate a common cause of heart disease: stress.. Stress is known to trigger inflammation in the arteries, which leads to its clogged state, otherwise known as atherosclerosis. It was revealed in other studies that people who enjoy support from family and friends appeared to have lesser inflammatory chemicals found in their blood.. 2. Good friendship helps us achieve a healthier lifestyle.. Good friends are good for our overall wellness. HealthDay cited a report from Current Opinion in Psychiatry in 2008 ...

The young child was rushed to the Emergency Room with fast breathing, nostrils flaring, and chest indrawing; he was pale and febrile. His condition has been going on for several days and he had a poor appetite, hence little intake of food and water. The diagnosis was pneumonia, a lung infection that may be acquired from the air with fatal complications.. Pneumonia or pneumococcal disease is still one of the leading causes of death among children under five years of age. The death toll approximately amounts to 2,400 children per day. In fact, it accounted for almost a million deaths in 2016, with most victims below 2 years of age. Around 60% of childhood pneumonia deaths are concentrated in 10 countries that are considered as developing. These developing countries, including the Philippines, are beset with poverty-related factors such as lack of safe water and sanitation, poor nutrition, prevalent air pollution, and inadequate access to health care that aggravate the pneumococcal disease. ...
Depending on where you are, vet school is often far more difficult to get into, and far more competitive once youre in, than med school. Vets have to have a broader knowledge base as you point out. Hard to say, but Id say it probably ends up being about equal, since people take human medicine so much more seriously, but Id say that vet school is probably overall more challenging. That said, vets do usually have to learn about a variety of animals when it school, but then they specialize (its very rare to find a vet who works on small animals, large animals AND exotics ...

Objective: To examine the demographic and clinical differences between men and women admitted to a Physicians Health Programme (PHP). Method: Retrospective chart-review of 778 medical records of physicians admitted to the Barcelona PHP from February 1st 1998 until December 31st 2015. Results: Women admitted to the Barcelona PHP were younger than men, were more likely to be self-referred and to be admitted forfor a non-addictive mental disorder. Prevalence of unipolar affective disorders (60.1% vs. 37.6%), adjustment disorders (62.4% vs. 37.6%) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (61.1% vs. 38.9%) was significantly higher among women while prevalence of alcohol use disorders was lower (32.7% vs. 67.3%). Nevertheless, both groups were similar with regards to medical specialty, working status, length of their first treatment episode, and presence of hospitalization during that episode. After multivariate analysis, age, type of referral and main diagnosis (addictive disorders vs. other mental disorders)

Are you a habitual moderate-to-heavy alcoholic beverage drinker? Do you have an alcoholic history? Bad news: a majority of alcoholics develop fatty liver (technically called alcoholic fatty liver disease). Genes also play a role as they can determine how much the body can handle alcohol and how much one can become addicted to it. Genes aside, diet, excess body iron and fat, hepatitis, and obesity can also contribute to having an alcoholic fatty liver. Non-alcoholics can still get fatty liver. In fact, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is probably the most common long-lasting liver problem in the world. In most cases, the problem is decidedly benign. In others, it can lead to some inflammation (called steatohepatitis), which can cause liver damage.. Some factors that are associated with a risk of getting NAFLD include obesity, certain meds (such as amiodarone, methotrexate, corticosteroids, tetracycline, and tamoxifen), hepatitis, genetic liver disorder, immune and metabolic system ...
Im sure you know a lot of people with diabetes. I can bet you have relatives diagnosed with hypertension. However, the chances are that you dont know anyone with multiple sclerosis.. After all, multiple sclerosis (MS) is thought to be relatively rare in the Philippines and in other tropical countries. Literally meaning numerous scars, it is an immunologic disorder of the central nervous system, characterized by the demyelination of axons and formation of plaques.. We cant let misconceptions about multiple sclerosis contribute to diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties! Its time to do a little myth-busting.. Myth #1: If someone in your family has it, youll have it, too. Having a family history of multiple sclerosis does not guarantee that one will get diagnosed with it later on.. Yes, the expert consensus on multiple sclerosis is that it comes with a genetic risk. Once exposed to the environmental triggers, someone genetically susceptible to MS may develop the disease.. Take note, ...
The Medical Board of California filed an Accusation against our client, a physician, alleging mental impairment (Business and Professions Code section 822.) This Accusation arose from a chain of events that led personnel issues to be blown out of proportion: First, personality conflicts led to our clients termination from employment. Second, mandatory reporting to the Medical Board (Business and Professions Code section 805) led to an investigation. Third, the investigator requested a psychiatric evaluation. Fourth, a Board appointed psychiatrist expressed the opinion that our client suffered from depression, but that he was safe to practice medicine. Unfortunately, the psychiatrist then speculated that our client could become unsafe to practice in the future. Finally, the Medical Board filed an accusation for disciplinary action based on the speculation of its reviewing psychiatrist.. We retained an independent expert to review the matter who determined that there were no objective, clinical ...

Gout - Painful Form of Rheumatoid Arthritis. By Dr. Patrick Flanagan. I am Dr. Patrick Flanagan, and this is my Doctor Health Secrets newsletter. I am a scientist with over 300 inventions related to health, longevity and medicine. This newsletter installment is about a painful condition called gout and what effects it has on your body. Pain Is Not The Name of The Game No one likes pain, no one likes discomfort, and no one likes having to tell their friends that they have an affliction known as gout. Gout is an acute form of arthritis that causes severe pain, discomfort, and swelling in the joints. People who suffer from this ailment report that their joints feel as if they are on fire or are being burned by acid. Not two feelings that I would be too excited to have. The most commonly affected area is the big toe, but other locations can also suffer, such as heels, ankles, hands, wrists, and elbows. The attacks that surround gout are usually sudden, and typically only last for about 5-10 days. ...

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse University Dr. Elaina George, a prominent family practice physician in Atlanta, has a bone to pick with President Obama. During various healthcare town hall meetings and press conferences, the president has villified doctors as the cause of the high cost of healthcare. But Dr. George doesnt agree. As one of the few black doctors in America who is taking the time to speak out in the current healthcare debate, Dr. George says that the culprits in the high cost of healthcare are The American Medical Association, hospitals, big pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies. Here is how she breaks it down. 1) Our country has gotten away from preventing illness and is instead engaged in the high cost of managing disease. Dr. George explains in the interview below that rather than actually curing illnesses or preventing them, we simply try to manage them. Her argument, as with many others in the healthcare profession, is that this attitude is driven by the fact that ...

How the fuck does he still have his medical license? I know its state regulated so he obviously has built in political protecton... The fit indices for models 1 and 3 are provided in Table 2. Model 2 resulted in negative variances, indicating that the model fit was poor. No further analyses were undertaken regarding Model 2. The results reported in Table 2 indicate that Model 1 did not fit the data, since the results did not fall within the acceptable boundaries of goodness-of-fit indices, as indicated in the literature (χ2 = 1360.96; GFI, IFI, TLI and CFI , 0.90 and RMSEA , 0.08). I will try to make this as concise as possible: 2years on the ICU & in trouble with the supervisor who started at the beginning of the year. The new boss frequently pulls me into her office to talk about concerns. She said other nurses have witnessed me doing things incorrectly, that my charting is wrong, the MDs are becoming less confident/trusting in me, and that I keep making mistakes. She drills me on why I did this or that on a patient I took care of 2-3 weeks ago (as if I could remember...). She has shouted at me in her office and in the hallways a few times. When I ask her why she is concerned, for more details on the situation shes concerned about, or when I ask to look at my charting with her (so I can see what this problem is, and fix it) her response is that she does not have time .. or she just changes the subject. She has told me that I had better fix my faults, however, or we were going to head down the disciplinary action road, and if things do not change: termination. I was ...
