The system was composed of the oligothiophene, dimethyl- 4,4-bipyridinium (MV2+), EDTA, and combined with ferredoxin-NADP reductase (FDR, E.C.1.18.1.2). The NADPH was generated by the FDR catalysis via the reduction of MV2+ by the photocatalysis of oligothiophene and EDTA as the sacrificial electron donor. As a result, the rate of the NADPH generation depended on the concentrations of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+) and MV2+. Even though time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) works generally well for describing excited states energies and properties in the Franck-Condon region, it can dramatically fail in predicting photochemistry, notably when electronic state crossings occur. Here, we assess the ability of TDDFT to describe the photochemistry of an important class of triplet sensitizers, namely, aromatic ketones. We take acetophenone as a test molecule, for which accurate ab initio results exist in the literature. Triplet acetophenone is generated thanks to an exotic three-state crossing involving one singlet and two triplets states (i.e., a simultaneous intersystem crossing and triplet conical intersection), thus being a stringent test for approximate TDDFT. This thesis focuses on the photochemistry of heteroaromatic biomolecules. These molecular systems have a rich photochemistry and take part in photochemical reactions that have many very topical applications. Small heteroaromatics constitute important biological building blocks and are therefore a fundamental components of living organisms. Even though these compounds absorb light very efficiently, they also have ultrafast relaxation processes available to them. This means that they can remove the absorbed energy very fast and avoid harmfull photoproducts forming, which can lead to cell damage. Larger heteroaromatics have a similarly efficient absorption of electromagnetic light, and are present in compounds that are responsible for the harvesting of energy in nature, for example the chlorophyll molecule in green plants and bacteria. Exposure to UV light, particularly from the sun, is the primary controllable risk factor for the development of skin cancer. The damaging effects of UV photons results from their ability to induced photochemistry in DNA bases. While the many possible photoproducts of DNA are well known, the formation mechanisms for these photoproducts are not. In order to better understand these processes, we seek to better understand the events that occur between photon absorption and photoproduct formation - the photophysics of DNA. Femtosecond UV pump/UV probe transient absorption spectroscopy was used to study the ground-state vibrational cooling of the DNA base derivative 9-methyladenine (9MA) in solution. The models most commonly used to describe the antenna organization of the photosynthetic membrane are the connected units model and the domain model. The theoretical descriptions of the exciton dynamics according to these models are reviewed with emphasis on a common nomenclature. Based on this nomenclature we compare for the two models the kinetics and yields of photochemistry and fluorescence under non-annihilation and annihilation conditions both under continuous light and under flash excitation. The general case is considered, that all initially open reaction centers become gradually closed and that exciton transfer between photosynthetic units (PSUs) is possible. Then, calculated kinetics and yields depend on the model assumptions made to account for the exciton transfer between PSUs. Here we extend the connected units model to flash excitation including exciton-exciton annihilation, and present a new simple mathematical formalism of the domain model under continuous light and flash excitation

These reactions are only partially understood, particularly with His. In this study, the oxidation of free His, His derivatives, and His-containing peptides has been examined using visible light and a range of sensitizers. It is shown that photooxidation gives rise to unstable peroxides, in a light-, illumination time-, and sensitizer-dependent manner. The yield of these materials is increased when reactions are carried out in solutions prepared with D2O, which prolongs the lifetime of 1O2, and decreased in the presence of the potent 1O2 scavenger azide, consistent with the involvement of this excited state. These peroxides have half-lives of hours, though the rate of decomposition is enhanced by elevated temperatures, reductants, and metal ions.
