Chronic kidney disease alters intestinal microbial flora. In the first issue of NDT-E 2013 you will find several novel interesting papers to read. In a recent Kidney Int paper Kathleen Hill et al. studied eight patients with CKD stages 3 or 4 and found that the positive calcium balance produced by calcium carbonate treatment within 3 weeks cautions against its use as a phosphate binder in patients with CKD stages 3 or 4 if their findings can be extrapolated to long-term therapy. In a recent review published in Kidney Int you will be able to learn more about renal function and intriguing metabolic adaptions in hibernating bears. In this issue of NDT-E you will also be able to read the full Kidney Int article published by Kalani Yamamoto et al. showing that higher dietary phosphorus intake was associated with greater odds of LVH among women, but not men. Source: http://nutrition.ansci.illinois.edu/feed_database.html. DDGS has higher levels of phosphorus, which provides the monocalcium phosphate needed in hogs and other livestock diets. Monocalcium phosphate is very expensive, so replacing even a little bit of it will have an important impact on final diet cost. This extra phosphorus value in the DDGS compared to SBM makes DDGS very competitive with SBM. Although the DDGS price is generally moving along with corn, it must be valued in terms of what it replaces in a diet. DDGS can replace some corn as an energy supplement. Besides that, DDGS also can replace some SBM as a crude protein supplement and some phosphorus as well. These factors make DDGS very competitive in the feedstuffs market place. There are some noticeable weaknesses and limitations in DDGS. When it comes to hogs, meat quality levels have been questionable with pigs fed a high concentration of DDGS diet. Meat packers are increasingly using iodine values to measure the levels of ...

We conducted three experiments to identify available phosphorus (aP) requirements of pigs reared in commercial facilities. In a pilot study (Exp. 1), 600 gilts (PIC, initially 95.2 lb) were randomly allotted to a low or high dietary P regimen in a 98-d study. Pigs were phase-fed six diets from 95 to 106, 106 to 150, 150 to 183, 183 to 212, 212 to 245, and 245 to 267 lb. Corresponding aP concentrations were: 0.30, 0.28, 0.27, 0.27, 0.24, and 0.19% (low) and 0.37, 0.33, 0.30, 0.28, 0.27, and 0.26% (high). No differences were observed (P | 0.10) in ADG and overall F/G was greater (P|0.07) for pigs fed the low aP regimen. In Exp. 2, 1,260 gilts (initially 74.5 lb) were randomly allotted to one of five dietary treatments in a 26-d study. Experimental diets contained 0.18, 0.22, 0.25, 0.29, or 0.32% aP, corresponding to 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, or 0.9 g aP/Mcal ME. There were 28 pigs per pen and 9 pens per treatment. From d 0 to 14, increasing aP tended to increase (linear, P|0.03) ADG and F/G (quadratic, P|0.05)

Phosphorus balance. A positive phosphorus balance implies that phosphorus soil test levels will increase in the field over the course of the planning window. A rough rule of thumb is that soil test phosphorus will increase one pound per acre for every 10 pounds of phosphate applied per acre. This is a conservative estimate; on some fields 10 pounds of phosphate per acre will result in greater increases in soil test phosphorus.. Caution must be used in interpreting nutrient balances. In some cases the nutrient balance will be positive even when using a phosphorus-based application strategy. For example, a field may receive a phosphorus-based application rate to provide three years of phosphorus. If the application is applied in year one of the plan and then again in year four of a five-year plan the phosphorus balance will be positive because the removal window for the second application extends beyond the planning window of the five-year plan.. 3. Phosphorus balance for a five-year plan should ...
Phosphorus is a mineral that is found in many of our foods. For us humans, it is quite an important little mineral. It is one of the building blocks of our cells. In a complex mixture of phosphorus, oxygen, and hydrogen, it makes up half of the outer wall of the cell. It is also a vital part of the inside of the cell, allowing it to perform a variety of different functions. In the nucleus, both RNA and DNA are made with phosphorus, which holds DNA together like glue.. Phosphorus is also crucial to bone health, with 80 to 85% of our phosphorus being stored in our bones. Without phosphorus, our bones would be much weaker. Dietary phosphorus can influence bone production by signaling bone growth. This process is always working to make sure our bones stay healthy. Another role phosphorus plays in bone health is the effect phosphorus has on a hormone called PTH, which controls our bodys bone and calcium metabolism by increasing the bodys absorption of calcium and decreasing its loss.. Phosphorus is ...

Because the damaged kidneys are unable to remove waste products and balance electrolytes in body, it is likely for ESRD patients to suffer from high phosphorus level. What are the complications related to high phosphorus?
Calcium dihydrogen phosphate is used in the food industry as a leavening agent, i.e., to cause baked goods to rise. Because it is acidic, when combined with an alkali ingredient, commonly sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or potassium bicarbonate, it reacts to produce carbon dioxide and a salt. Outward pressure of the carbon dioxide gas causes the rising effect. When combined in a ready-made baking powder, the acid and alkali ingredients are included in the right proportions such that they will exactly neutralize each other and not significantly affect the overall pH of the product. AMCP and MCP are fast acting, releasing most carbon dioxide within minutes of mixing. It is popularly used in pancake mixes. In double acting baking powders, MCP is often combined with the slow acting acid sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP).[3] ...
Phosphorus even works in our bodies to efficiently use carbohydrates and fat. Phosphorus is a dietary Gal Friday...wearing a dozen hats and ensuring that essential functions go off without a hitch.. Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in our bodies (calcium is the first). Luckily, phosphorus is found naturally in many food sources. Its prevalence is highest in animal products (fish, chicken and beef), but it can also be found in milk products, peanuts, tofu and soybeans. The recommended daily phosphorus intake for a healthy adult is about 700mg/day, and if youre meeting your daily protein requirements, chances are youre stocked up on phosphorus too.. Perhaps counterintuitively, the concern we need to have with phosphorus is that we may on occasion get too much. While the RDA is 700mg, the upper limit of daily phosphorus is 4,000mg/day. Thats a huge disparity, and it would be tough to eat that much protein in a single day to account for 4,000mg of phosphorus. The way you quadruple ...

Phosphorus is required for both soft tissue and bone growth. Clinical signs of a deficiency include slowed growth for abnormal substance and unthrifty appearance. The calcium/phosphorus ratio should not be less than 1.2:1 for does and 2:1 for males. Grazing goats rarely develop a phosphorus deficiency due to their browsing phosphorus rich plants. Appropriate attention to calcium/phosphorus ratio is important to avoid promotion of urolithiasis. Additional information about phosphorus can be found at (Phosphorus).. ...
Low calcium:phosphorus ratios (Ca:P ratio) in habitual diet have been observed worldwide, and it has been shown to be harmful to the bone health of the population. However, no study associating this ratio with obesity was found. Thus, considering that the intake of calcium and phosphorus will generate a ratio between them, which may be associated with obesity, this research seeks at evaluating the relation between obesity and the Ca:P ratio in the habitual diet of adults. Cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study with stratified and systematic sampling. The sample was composed of 506 adults, aged between 18 and 60 years, of both genders. Information on socioeconomic and demographic conditions was obtained through questionnaires completed during home visits, where anthropometric and dietary evaluations were also conducted. In the habitual diet consumed by the study subjects, a Ca:P ratio above the median of 0.57 reduced the risk of central obesity based on waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (OR: 0

For the Full Report in PDF Form, please click here.. [Illustrations, footnotes and references available in PDF version]. Under current ambient conditions, plant growth and development are typically carbon-limited, which is why plants generally exhibit increased growth and biomass production in response to atmospheric CO2 enrichment. Next to carbon, nitrogen is usually the second most limiting nutrient to plant growth, followed by phosphorus. Thus, although it is a less significant component of plant tissues than carbon and nitrogen, phosphorus is still required for successful life-cycle completion in many plant species; and, therefore, it is prudent to investigate aspects of plant phosphorus acquisition and biomass production in response to atmospheric CO2 enrichment when phosphorus concentrations in soils are less than optimal.. ...
We tested the hypothesis that in humans, metabolic acidosis can disorder the metabolism of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] by impairing the capacity for a sustained physiological stimulus to increase renal production of this hormone. Specifically, in seven healthy men in whom restriction of dietary phosphorus had doubled their serum concentration of 1,25(OH)2D, we induced metabolic acidosis of moderate severity with oral NH4Cl, administered for 7 days. With induction of acidosis, the serum concentration of 1,25(OH)2D decreased sharply and remained decreased and near constant throughout the period of acidosis, the decrease amounting to one-half of the increment induced by phosphorus restriction alone. The serum concentration of free 1,25(OH)2D also decreased, since the measured free fraction of 1,25(OH)2D was unaffected by NH4Cl. The decrease in serum 1,25(OH)2D was accounted for by a 16% increase in its metabolic clearance rate and by a 19% decrease in its production rate. Metabolic ...

The Deutsche Phosphor Plattform (DPP) is a network of stakeholders from science, industry and public bodies to establish sustainable phosphorus management in Germany through a more efficient use of phosphorus as well as effective recycling and reprocessing.. Core to the approach of DPP is dentifying and implementing innovative technologies that allow economically feasible recycling of phosphorus on a broad scale but also through improved use of phosphorus in already existing manufacturing processes. This includes increases in production efficiency as well as re-using production waste as input material were possible.. Germany is leading in environmental engineering solutions and has identified several ways to recover phosphorus from different waste streams. Commercial use of these technologies however is not state of the art and still leaves room for improvement.. The DPP network is developing multiple strategies that each focus on optimising phosphorus use efficiency, recycling rates and ...
Phosphorus also helps you turn fat, carbs, and protein into energy. Almost all wastewater treatment plants perform at least a secondary treatment, but this typically does not provide enough phosphorus removal. Without phosphorus, we cannot produce food.. Crop yields will need to double by 2050 to feed 9 billion people while the worlds main source of phosphorus is becoming increasingly scarce.. Yet our leaders dont have a plan for ensuring all the worlds farmers have access to sufficient phosphorus to grow enough food to feed the world in the long term.. Phosphorus is currently wasted and polluting our waters as we mine it, apply it to fields as fertilizers and excrete it from the food we consume. If were smart, we can instead capture and reuse phosphorus efficiently. But we need to take action now.. Help be part of the solution - learn, discuss, debate, act with sustainable phosphorus use scientists, innovators and policy-makers from around the world.. Phosphorus is an expensive nutrient to supplement, and excess may lead to manure P challenges. Therefore, minimizing dietary P to meet requirements is important. Two experiments were conducted to determine the P requirement of finishing cattle (Exp. 1) and to evaluate the effects of feeding different P concentrations on the quantity and route of P excretion (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, 60 heifers (BW = 278 kg +/- 17 kg) were individually fed 1 of 5 dietary P concentrations (0.10, 0.17, 0.24, 0.31, or 0.38% P ...

Our vet wanted to see Spangle this morning when I asked for a further supply of her meds. When we got there he asked if he could take some blood tests to check her kidney function and her thyroid (he commented that her coat was coarse ). He phoned me about an hour ago to tell me that Spangle`s phosphorus levels in her bloodstream were quite high and he wanted to put her on a binding agent to mix with her food. The rest of her results will be back next week. What I wondered was if anyone
In the body, almost all phosphorus is combined with oxygen, forming phosphate. Phosphorus isnt just found on the heads of matches, it is also the second most abundant mineral in the human body. © 2005-2020 Healthline Media a Red Ventures Company. Functions of Phosphorus in the Body. No wonder you have more of it in your body than almost any other mineral. Carbonated beverages supply significant amounts of phosphorus in the diet, too. Second only to calcium, phosphorous is the most plentiful mineral in your body, and it is necessary for such processes as the production and storage of energy. Here are the top diabetes…, Food deserts are areas where its hard to find healthy foods. This is another very interesting use of phosphorus in our bodies. The acute lethal … The content of phosphorus in the human body is around 600 - 700 g; around 90% of this particular value is found in the bones. Phosphorus is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of cellular activities every single day. ...

Hi Janet, Thanks for the question. Most mineralized salt products do not contain enough phosphorus to make much of a difference, and generally they also have both calcium and phosphorus, so it would also contribute to both the amounts of calcium and phosphorus and not really solve your issue. It really depends on the guaranteed analysis of the mineralized salt. Some guarantee max calcium .85% and only 0.02% phosphorus.. Mature horses can have a maximum 6:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus but a 2:1 ratio is ideal. A diet consisting of only alfalfa could be a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio or up to 6:1 ratio, but it really depends on where the alfalfa is grown and what the alfalfa test in nutrients which can be different from one cutting to the next or stage of maturity. Alfalfa that is late bloom will have a lower level of calcium compared to early bloom alfalfa. For your horse, we wouldnt be too concerned, but the best recommendation would be to first do the math on your horses diet - gather the tag from the ...
