This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 8-week clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of niacinamide versus placebo to reduce plasma phosphorus levels in peritoneal dialysis patients. Patients on a stable regimen of phosphate binders with plasma phosphorus levels , 4.9 mg/dL are eligible for enrollment and randomization. The study will span 8 weeks of active medication treatment. The primary end-point will be absolute change in plasma phosphorus levels. Sixteen patients (8 randomized to each treatment arm) are needed to detect a 1.5 mg/dL difference assuming a standard deviation of 1 and powered at 80% (alpha 0.05). Placebo will be packaged to resemble the study drug in all physical attributes. The starting dose of niacinamide will be 250 mg twice daily to be titrated to 500 mg twice daily at the end of week 2 with a final titration to 750 mg twice daily at the end of week 4. A pilot-scale, pre-anoxic-anaerobic oxidation ditch was used in this study to treat municipal wastewater with limited carbon source. A novel return activated sludge (RAS) pre-concentration tank was adopted for improving the phosphorus removal efficiency and the effects of RAS pre-concentration ratio were studied. Under the optimal operational condition, the suspended total phosphorus (STP) and the total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies were around 58.9% and 63.9% respectively and the effluent PO3-4 -P was lower than 0.8 mg•L−1. This study investigated the effect of maturity class on phosphorus (P) balance in a soyabean-maize rotation in the West African moist savanna. Four soyabean varieties of different maturity classes were grown with or without P fertilizer followed by a maize crop. Soyabean stover P content averaged 1.77 kg ha(-1) compared with 5.13 kg ha(-1) in the grain. The late soyabean variety TGx1670-1F accumulated a significantly higher P in the grain (6.56 kg ha(-1)), and stover (2.57 kg ha(-1)) than the others. While P harvest index averaged 79%, P application increased grain P by 63-81% and stover P by 100% or more. When either soyabean grain or grain+stover was exported, P balance was negative and was not statistically different for varieties when no P was applied. Alum sludge from a Tampa water treatment plant was found to significantly reduce phosphorus release from anaerobic bottom sediments. The kinetics of phosphorus uptake by the sludge was evaluated in batch reactors. Further, the impact of the sludge on benthic organisms was determined in aquarium systems. Aquariums were set up with sediments and organisms from various lake habitats. Organisms were allowed to establish themselves and then test aquaria were dosed with alum sludge to cover the sediments. Benthic survival and heavy metal uptake were evaluated. Favorable phosphorus uptake was demonstrated in the batch reactors. This study vitalized the uncertainty and fuzzy rules consideration in the estimation of phosphorus loadings and eutrophication status of the hydrologic system namely detention pond using Fuzzy Logic (MATLAB). These methods were chosen to cater for the uncertainty of loading factors such as sediment and phosphorus inflow, inflowing discharge and pond storage volume. The average of phosphorus concentrations obtained from site investigation was 0.178 mg/L, hydraulic residence time was 1.77 year and the average annual hydraulic loadings was 694.70 m/yr, obtained based on the 12 years period (2000-2012). This paper addresses the structural characteristics and phase transformation behavior of plain electroless Ni-P and Ni-P-Si3N4 composite coatings. Composite coatings were prepared using a low phosphorus electroless nickel bath containing 1 and 5 g/L submicron silicon nitride particles at pH 6.5 and temperature 85 +/- 2 degrees C. In this historical cohort study, incident chronic hemodialysis patients in the group that was treated with activated injectable vitamin D had a significant survival advantage over a comparable group of chronic hemodialysis patients who did not. These findings withstood adjustment for multiple confounders, several sensitivity analyses, stratified models, and an independent analysis to address the issues of confounding by indication and confounding by mineral levels that may have resulted from injectable vitamin D. Because injectable vitamin D use among chronic hemodialysis patients was not universal, we were able to examine the association between receiving injectable vitamin D and mortality in 49 multivariate strata, and in 48 of 49 strata, the benefits were significant. Phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural land is a serious environmental issue because of the impact of P on freshwater eutrophication (McDowell, et al., 2001). The movement of P from soil to surface water is impacted by P input to soil and manure management practices that impact P transport processes. Twenty-one natural runoff plots were established to monitor the effect of time and method of composted beef feedlot manure application and feed P input on net losses of bio-available P and sediment in surface runoff. Reducing feed P inputs resulted in a 33% reduction in manure P content. Runoff losses of P were reduced in direct proportion to feed P inputs. Runoff volume and sediment losses were lowest in the year s of compost application and we observed that a longer time interval between compost application date and spring runoff season resulted in increase sediment, runoff and P loss.
