This is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 8-week clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of niacinamide versus placebo to reduce plasma phosphorus levels in peritoneal dialysis patients. Patients on a stable regimen of phosphate binders with plasma phosphorus levels , 4.9 mg/dL are eligible for enrollment and randomization. The study will span 8 weeks of active medication treatment. The primary end-point will be absolute change in plasma phosphorus levels. Sixteen patients (8 randomized to each treatment arm) are needed to detect a 1.5 mg/dL difference assuming a standard deviation of 1 and powered at 80% (alpha 0.05). Placebo will be packaged to resemble the study drug in all physical attributes. The starting dose of niacinamide will be 250 mg twice daily to be titrated to 500 mg twice daily at the end of week 2 with a final titration to 750 mg twice daily at the end of week 4. ABSTRACT: Effects of phosphorus content (510 to 987 ppm) on the gelatinization and retrogradation of 6 potato cultivars (Benimaru, Hokkaikogane, Irish Cobbler, Konafubuki, Sakurafubuki, and Touya) were studied. Pasting properties were analyzed by RVA, thermal properties by DSC, and mechanical properties of the starch gels by TA. Phosphorus was positively correlated with swelling power (r= 0.84) and negatively correlated with solubility (r= 0.83). Phosphorus content showed significant effect on certain pasting properties of potato starch such as peak viscosity, breakdown, and setback. To better understand the mechanisms behind how maize responds to phosphate stress, we compared the proteome analysis results of two groups of maize leaves that were treated separately with 1,000 µM (control, +P) and 5 µM of KH2PO4 (intervention group, −P) for 25 days. In total, 1,342 protein spots were detected on 2-DE maps and 15.43% had changed (P|0.05; ≥1.5-fold) significantly in quantity between the +P and −P groups. These proteins are involved in several major metabolic pathways, including photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, secondary metabolism, signal transduction, protein synthesis, cell rescue and cell defense and virulence. A pilot-scale, pre-anoxic-anaerobic oxidation ditch was used in this study to treat municipal wastewater with limited carbon source. A novel return activated sludge (RAS) pre-concentration tank was adopted for improving the phosphorus removal efficiency and the effects of RAS pre-concentration ratio were studied. Under the optimal operational condition, the suspended total phosphorus (STP) and the total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies were around 58.9% and 63.9% respectively and the effluent PO3-4 -P was lower than 0.8 mg•L−1. This study investigated the characteristics of denitrifying phosphorus removal bacteria by using three different types of electron acceptors as well as the positive role of nitrite in phosphorus removal process. Denitrifying phosphorous removal bacteria was enriched under anaerobic-anoxic (A/A) condition. To understand A/A sludge better, sludge from two other sources were also studied. These include sludges obtained from a lab-scale anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A/A/O) system and a local sewage treatment plant. Alum sludge from a Tampa water treatment plant was found to significantly reduce phosphorus release from anaerobic bottom sediments. The kinetics of phosphorus uptake by the sludge was evaluated in batch reactors. Further, the impact of the sludge on benthic organisms was determined in aquarium systems. Abstract. Climate, fire and soil nutritional limitation are important elements that affect the vegetation dynamics in areas of forest-savanna transition. In this paper, we use the dynamic vegetation model INLAND to evaluate the influence of climate variability, fire and phosphorus limitation on the Amazon-Cerrado transitional vegetation structure and dynamics. We assess how each element affects the net primary production, leaf area index and biomass and compare the simulations of aboveground biomass to observed biomass map. Global terrestrial models currently predict that the Amazon rainforest will continue to act as a carbon sink in the future, primarily owing to the rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. Soil phosphorus impoverishment in parts of the Amazon basin largely controls its functioning, but the role of phosphorus availability has not been considered in global model ensembles-for example, during the Fifth Climate Model Intercomparison Project. Here we simulate the planned free-air CO2 enrichment experiment AmazonFACE with an ensemble of 14 terrestrial ecosystem models. We show that phosphorus availability reduces the projected CO2-induced biomass carbon growth by about 50% to 79 ± 63 g C m−2 yr−1 over 15 years compared to estimates from carbon and carbon-nitrogen models. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the removal of the phosphorus and carbon dioxide capture potential of a conventional septic system upgraded with a sidestream steel slag filter used in recirculation mode. A pilot scale sidestream experiment was conducted with two septic tank and drainfield systems, one with and one without a sidestream slag filter. The experimental system was fed with real domestic wastewater. Recirculation ratios of 25%, 50% and 75% were tested. Limestone soils and non-calcareous soils were used as drainfield media. The tested system achieved a satisfactory compromise between phosphorus removal and pH at the effluent of the septic tank, thus eliminating the need for a neutralization step. The phosphorus removal efficiency observed in the second compartment of the septic tank was 30% in the slag filter upgraded system, compared to −3% in the control system.
