In this study, the efficient phosphate utilizing isolates were used to remove phosphate from synthetic phosphate wastewater was tested using batch scale process. Hence the objective of the present study was to examine the efficiency of bacterial species individually for the removal of phosphate from synthetic phosphate wastewater. The most efficient phosphate reducers were isolated and screened from eutrophic lake water samples. The total heterotrophic bacterial analysis of the samples showed the presence of about 22 phosphate reducers. Among them, Pseudomonas sp YLW-7 were found to be efficient in phosphate reduction based on the maximum phosphate ultization which was observed by plate screening method using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test. The transport properties of brush-border membrane vesicles isolated by a calcium-precipitation method from the renal cortex of normal and parathyrin (parathyroid hormone)-treated rats were studied by a rapid-filtration technique. Parathyrin elicited a dose-dependent decrease in the Na+-dependent phosphate uptake by the brush-border membrane vesicles, but the uptake of D-glucose, Na+ and mannitol was not affected. A maximum inhibition of 30% was observed after the application of 30 U.S.P. units intramuscularly 1 h before the animals were killed. Here, we report the detailed characterization of electrophysiological properties of the barley Pi transporter, HvPHT1;1 in Xenopus laevis oocytes. A very low Km value (1.9 µm) for phosphate transport was observed in HvPHT1;1, which falls within the concentration range observed for barley roots. Inward currents at negative membrane potentials were identified as nH+:Pi- (n , 1) co-transport based on simultaneous Pi radiotracer uptake, oocyte voltage clamping and pH dependence. An intracellular acid phosphatase (IAP) from Pi-starved (−Pi) tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) suspension cells has been purified to homogeneity. IAP is a purple acid phosphatase (PAP), as the purified protein was violet in colour (λmax=546 nm) and was insensitive to l-tartrate. Introduction: Refeeding syndrome is characterised by acute electrolyte derangement following the start of nutrition. Hypophosphataemia is the predominant feature of the electrolyte derangement, hence commonly used for its definition. We aim to assess the incidence of refeeding hypophosphataemia, and its associated risk factors, and outcome in our local ICU. Materials and Methods: This was a single centre, prospective observational study at the ICU of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan Kuantan, involving adult admission longer than 48 hours. Chronic renal failure patients and those receiving dialysis were excluded. Refeeding hypophosphataemia (RH) was considered if plasma phosphate was less than 0.65 mmol/l. Results: Fifty-four patients were screened. After exclusion, 29 were recruited, of which, 13 (44.8%) patients had RH. Of this, 66% occurred with duration of fasting of less than two days.
