I use the terms applied philosophy and engaged philosophy to mark two different ways of trying to connect moral and political philosophy with practical ethical questions. Im really just describing two different styles of approaching the issues, rather than precise methodologies, and its a distinction Ive observed and put into words rather than invented. The applied philosophy approach is to start with a reasonably well-worked out philosophical theory which one then applies to the world rather in the way you might simplistically imagine that a scientific theory is applied. This paper presents a model for integrating elements of Transformational Leadership with Confucian Philosophy. The various concepts of each perspective are discussed with special emphasis on efforts to note similarities in the two perspectives. Examples of how leaders could apply the integration of these two perspectives are presented for those working in the social service field.

More specifically, philosophy is the rational and critical inquiry into the fundamental questions of human existence: Does life have a meaning or is it simply absurd? In this course, we will take a historical approach to the central issues of philosophy by examining such questions as: What is the nature of reality (metaphysics)? What can we know (epistemology)? Do good and evil exist (ethics)? What is beauty (aesthetics)? I am interested in issues in metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind in early modern and nineteenth-century philosophy.. I spend a lot of my time working on forgotten figures in the history of philosophy (James Ward, Charles Renouvier, and Clarisse Coignet, to name a few), but I have recently been focusing my research on the more well known philosophers William James and Hegel. I am writing a book on William James and the relationship between his metaphysics and his pragmatism, and I hope to finish that relatively soon. I am also writing a book on habit in the history of philosophy (from Descartes to Dewey), which will no doubt take a lot longer.. There has been a long standing agreement among literary critics to view Nathaniel Hawthorne as a Twilight Romanticist and a somber moralist exploring the dark recesses of the human heart. The critics also agree uniformly that while pondering on the natural human propensity for evil, Hawthorne is not so much concerned with the religious, metaphysical consequences ofhuman sinfulness as with the psychological impact of guilt on human life. Accurate as the above-mentioned criticism is, it neglects the larger societal scope of Hawthornes preoccupation with moral issues.
