So what is bushcraft? To quote Ray Mears, it is "The practical knowledge of the natural world that we can carry with us in our minds and muscles. But it is about much more then just survival. Bushcraft is a treasure trove of wisdom, that enables us to feel a real kinship with the landscape." Where I live, in southern Minnesota, the "aboriginal minnesotans" 12,000 years ago, made their way across the landscape, near the edge of the last glacier, hunting and gathering as a culture, and of course using the ways of bushcraft. The village sites in the area I have had the privilege to explore, have yielded stone tools and pottery shards, and given me a mystery I wish to unravel. By studying both aboriginal bushcraft and modern ways of bushcraft I hope to find that kind of "kinship" with the landscape in a modern age. I welcome your comments as we share our experiences about both aboriginal and modern bushcraft, blending the past with the future, and getting that practical knowledge of the natural ...

One of the difficulties the movement to address climate change faces is that we are living in a society that is dissociated from nature in countless ways. With so many people living in cities or paved-over suburbs, often spending the great part of their lives in front of a computer screen or a television or on as assembly line in factory with no windows, the reality of our surroundings and along with that our dependency on plants, trees, water, air, and other animals for our survival, has faded from daily consciousness. Whether pandering advertisements or lifestyles that separate us from natural habitats, so much in modern civilization has acted to diminish our sensual, concrete, and yes, practical knowledge about how to survive on earth.. By contrast the awareness of many indigenous peoples, who know from their daily lives that their sustenance depends on the health of the ecospheres around them, has not been blunted in the same way: not only do they see the effects, but they are also alarmed ...
We learned a lot about Aboriginal wisdom, despite the challenges posed by a brutal terrain and a secretive culture. In the end, we had to earn every piece of information that was shared with us. We did the research, observed and interviewed dozens of modern-day Aborigines -- from 12-year-old schoolgirls like Alisha, to traditional elders like Herman Malbunka -- and lived in the bush ourselves. Ultimately, big-hearted Aboriginal visionaries like Terry Coulthard and Reg Dodd, who joined our team, offered the greatest wealth of information. Technology/Practical Knowledge: 60,000 years of observation has yielded many clever inventions. Several merit a modern-day look. Take the powerful adhesives Aboriginals made from the spinafex tree and the dozens of untested pharmaceutical compounds in their bush medicine. My favorite: The fluted ridges on boomerangs have recently been found to dramatically improve flight efficiency. Can the engineers at Boeing learn something from this? The Environment: ...

Anemia, a major consequence of CKD, is an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality and decreased healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL). Despite the guidelines issued by the National Kidney Foundation-The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF-KDOQI) for the evaluation and management of CKD-related anemia, CKD-related anemia remains underrecognized and undertreated. It is essential that all members of the health-care team who care for patients with CKD understand the importance of early identification and management of anemia in order to customize therapy that will optimize outcomes. In addition, clinicians need to gain practical knowledge of the benefits and limitations of standard-, advanced-, and extended-dosing intervals of currently available erythropoietic agents as well as the efficacy, safety, and practical value of agents in development ...

Of course, Sverri also became physically stronger over the last five years: now, he pulls about 16% more average force, which in combination with 7% longer stroke gave him 23% more rowing power, while his progress in erg power was only 3%. This is an evidence that efficient technique helps to produce more power in a boat.. Sverris rowing technique and results were dramatically improved since last year, when Thomas Poulsen came back to coaching the Danish teamю He was a coach of LM2x DEN Olympic champions at London-2012 and Olympic champion himself at Atlanta-1996. I have been working with Thomas since 2009 and this is what he said about our collaboration:. "For me, working with BioRow is a great help and inspiration to stay ahead of the technical development. Motivations for and positive attitudes toward physical activity (PA) developed during childhood are likely to be carried over to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between three psychological needs satisfaction, motivational regulations in physical education (PE), and attitudes toward participation in leisure-time PA among upper elementary school students. One thousand and seventy-three students in grades 3-5 anonymously and voluntarily completed three measures, including Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Motivational Regulations, and Attitudes, which were modified from previous works and judged by a panel of experts to ensure the wording of each item was understandable for upper elementary school students. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, composite reliability coefficient, and multilevel confirmatory factor analysis methods. The results indicated that the composite reliability coefficients of the measures were above .60, ranging from .62 to ...
Under the auspices of neoliberalism, technical systems of compliance and efficiency have come to underwrite the relations among the state, the economy, and a biopolitics of war, terror, and surveillance. In Beyond Biopolitics, prominent theorists seek to account for and critically engage the tendencies that have informed neoliberal governance in the past and are expressed in its reformulation today. As studies of military occupation, the policing of migration, blood trades, financial markets, the war on terror, media ecologies, and consumer branding, the essays explore the governance of life and death in a near-future, a present emptied of future potentialities. The contributors delve into political and theoretical matters central to projects of neoliberal governance, including states of exception that are not exceptional but foundational; risk analysis applied to the adjudication of "ethical" forms of war, terror, and occupation; racism and the management of the life capacities of populations; ...

Concerned by conservations issues for many years, since 2005 Fred works with marine biologists to assist them in their field work. He uses his freediving abilities to approach the animals and perform tasks such as acoustic and satellite tagging or DNA sampling. So far Fred was asked by team from Colombia, Mexico, France, , UK, Philippines and South Africa to help them with his practical knowledge and experience in the water with animals. He worked with great white sharks, great hammerheads, scalloped hammerheads, lemmon sharks and ferox sharks amongst others, always using freediving and no protection cage to minimize the disturbance on the animals.. During these missions, Fred documents the field work to contribute to conservation on a larger scale through talks, conferences. Numerous NGOs are using his material for their conservation campaigns. That approach to conservation pushes forward the concept of positive imagery versus the dramatization of our Oceans current state.. ...

Order from chaos is simultaneously a mantra of physics and a reality in biology. Physicist Norman Packard suggested that life developed and thrives at the edge of chaos. Questions remain, however, as to how much practical knowledge of biology can be traced to existing physical principles, and how much physics has to change in order to address the complexity of biology. Phil Anderson, a physics Nobel laureate, contributed to popularizing a new notion of the end of "reductionism." In this view, it is necessary to abandon the quest of reducing complex behavior to known physical results, and to identify emergent behaviors and principles. In the present book, however, we have sought physical rules that can underlie the behavior of biota as well as the geochemistry of soil development. We looked for fundamental principles, such as the dominance of water flow paths with the least cumulative resistance, that could maintain their relevance across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, together with ...
Tessios hypotheses were formed in the absence of what is now considered common knowledge about the actual breeding process in the equine. The concept that the best sperm will get there first was formed - at least in part - with the view that the use of AI would give what may perhaps not be the best sperm a head start by the introduction of the insemination dose directly into the uterus. At that time, there was a strongly held belief that - as is seen in other species, notably (because of practical knowledge) humans - at the time of ejaculation, sperm were deposited into the vagina rather than the uterus. In fact, in the equine, as a result of a variety of factors, the ejaculate is usually deposited directly into the uterus, or at the very least under pressure into the cervix (which results in almost immediate transfer into the uterus) - in other words, there is no head start for sperm with the use of AI compared to live cover ...

Descriptive Statement: Measurement helps describe our world using numbers. We use numbers to describe simple things like length, weight, and temperature, but also complex things such as pressure, speed, and brightness. An understanding of how we attach numbers to those phenomena, familiarity with common measurement units like inches, liters, and miles per hour, and a practical knowledge of measurement tools and techniques are critical for students understanding of the world around them. Cumulative Progress Indicators By the end of Grade 4, students: ...

Granville Woods in 1887? No The first inventor to patent an induction telegraphy system for communicating to and from moving trains was William W. Smith (US. Pat. #247127, Sept 13, 1881). The first to attain practical success was Lucius Phelps, who patented his railway telegraph in 1884 (#307984) and successfully demonstrated it on the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad in January of 1885. The feat was hailed in Scientific American, Feb. 21, 1885. By that time, Granville Woods hadnt even applied for a patent yet, nor had he built a working railway telegraph. Phelps remained the leader in the development of the technology, and by the end of 1887 already held 14 patents on his system. Phelps eventually joined forces with Thomas Edison -- who had been developing his own "grasshopper telegraph" for trains -- and together they constructed, on the Lehigh Valley railroad, the only train telegraph ever known to have been put to commercial use. Phelps and Edison challenged one of Granville Woods ...
Chair Chi exercise sessions are an excellent way of learning how to calm the mind and energise the body while seated on a chair. They require little space and help to improve flexibility, co-ordination, and circulation. They are ideal for those who are less physically capable of practicing standing or moving exercises, who are in wheel chairs, or whose capacity for physical movement is limited in any way. They are also highly adaptable and beneficial for residents whose cognitive capacity is impaired.. Chair Chi exercises and activities are adapted from Tai Chi, which is an ancient Chinese health and self defence system. It includes Chi Kung (energy work), and selected exercises from the Tai Chi form that are adapted so they can be done while sitting on a chair. The easy-to-learn, gentle exercises include correct breathing, relaxing the body, calming the mind, developing internal energy, circulating chi and practical Yin Yang philosophy (non-religious) - all of which are essential to Tai ...

The generic definitions are applicable to any situation involving safety and security. But each situations content will differ.. The content of a "steady state" changes from one situation to another. It can be operationally defined in terms of regulatory codes and standards, performance data, an organizations vision and mission statements, personnel policies, or operations manuals. The situation-specific "steady state" therefore is the basis for what constitutes safety and, consequently, the content of security is specifically directed toward that steady state.. In the case of a fire access lane, safety is defined as an unobstructed lane of code-specific length and width, having apparatus-weight-bearable surface, with a readily available water supply, and unimpeded access to a building threatened by fire. These qualities are referenced in both IFC 2009 and NFPA 1-2009. In addition, NFPA 1710 addresses fire apparatus response time from fire station to the inflamed building but makes only casual ...

When opposite sides of a quadrangle were of different length, half their sum was used as a basis to calculate the area. 14 These procedures do not presuppose a concept of angle as an object of mensuration15 and, as long as the shapes of the figures involved are sufficiently regular (nearly rectangular quadrangles and nearly right-angled triangles), the method produces reasonably accurate results. The oldest clay tablets documenting the calculation of measured areas date back to around 3,000 BCE. Thinking Sexualities" is directed by Pamela Hall, womens studies chair. According to Hall, the series "seeks to enact various intersections between womens studies and LGBT studies, sometimes by a focus on LGBT experience in some specific time and place, or by more theoretical reflection on the ways in which the study of LGBT identity can and should matter to womens studies as a discipline ...
Title: Seal no: 4, 1989 ©Per Maning /BONO 2010. The concepts of biopower and biopolitics, so eloquently and significantly laid out by Michel Foucault, are quite possibly insufficient to our understanding of past and contemporary living. Just think about zoonoses including the swine flu pandemic, and the ways in which the production of facts about the human body have been and continue to be built upon the observation and manipulation of animals. These and similar examples suggest that two correctives or re-emphases are required. First, studies of life and the living alert us to the fact that biopolitics is not only about humans, in the form of the human individual, or in the form of the human population, it is rather about an assemblage of matters of life. Second, there is neither a self evident or totalising human power over life, nor an unproblematic politics of life. The relation between life and politics needs both theoretical and empirical specificity. To expand slightly on each of ...
With the demographic challenges facing many European states, one would perhaps expect the state to invoke a biopolitical imperative to faire vivre, as Foucault termed it, and attempt to regulate birth rates. This expectation is too simple, however, as this article shows both theoretically and empirically. In order better to understand the possible counterweights to biopolitical concerns about the birth rate, the conceptual distinction between biopolitics and governmentality is useful. Scholarly debates about biopolitics and governmentality have been surprisingly silent on what constitutes the internal relationship between the two or how they may come into conflict. The article elaborates this conceptual distinction and demonstrates its relevance in a genealogy of how fertility treatment has been problematized in Danish assisted reproduction policy. Since access to IVF treatment does not appear to follow a biopolitical imperative to faire vivre, it is interesting to explore and compare how ...
The current algorithmic results for MaxMin Allocation are based on a complicated LP relaxation called the configuration LP. We present a much simpler LP which is equivalent in power to the configuration LP. We focus on a special case of MaxMin Allocation-a family of instances on which this LP has a polynomially large gap. The technical core of our result for this case comes from an algorithm for an interesting new optimization problem on directed graphs, MaxMinDegree Arborescence, where the goal is to produce an arborescence of large outdegree. We develop an $n$-approximation for this problem that runs in $n^{O(1/t)}$ time and obtain a polylogarithmic approximation that runs in quasipolynomial time, using a lift-and-project inspired LP formulation. In fact, we show that our results imply a rounding algorithm for the relaxations obtained by $t$ rounds of the Sherali-Adams hierarchy applied to a natural LP relaxation of the problem. Roughly speaking, the integrality gap of the relaxation obtained ...
Enhancing the quality of medical services depends, in the first line, on a strong and viable primary sector with family medicine as its centerpoint. Economically efficient healthcare forms will be fostered, together with a growth in the scope of medical services and improvement of resource and legislative backup, as primary medical assistance is reorganized and gradually channeled into the practice of family medicine.. At the time being, there are 320 professional family doctors and 669 nurses in the region. 178 family healthcare facilities offer their services across the region, including 152 (85.3%) in rural areas. Another 20 similar establishments were opened this year. Population catchment has increased from 41.6% in 2005 to 49.3% in 2006.. A number of further requirements must be met if we are to foster the further development of family medicine. Accommodation for staff must be provided, equipment for village outpatient facilities must be purchased. There is also the National program of ...

As you can tell from what Ive written on this thread, I am anxious about what might become of me when I grow decrepit. Like you there will be no one to look after me. Ive never had children, and the tattered remains of my family -- nothing but the children of cousins now in middle age with whom I have little in common, and whove shown no interest in me -- are scattered far and wide and have many problems of their own. Most of them have either done well financially or have wound up desperately poor. Im fortunate to have some money, but its not enough to meet the needs of those in dire straits. Id be broke in less than a year if I tried to do that ...
