This paper describes some of the problems that IS faculty encounter, when they attempt to teach emerging information technologies. We conceptualize these problems as a dilemma: between an objectivist perspective for teaching the basics of tools and syntax and a more enlightened, constructivist and socio-cultural pedagogical perspective that emphasizes principles and application of the technology. In this paper, we explore this dilemma drawing on a specific case study, where the authors were engaged in teaching eXtensible Markup Language (XML) at a Scandinavian institution. We follow a multi-method research approach drawing on our own critical reflections throughout the term, and feedback obtained from the students at the end of the term. The data indicates that for teaching emerging technologies, educators face challenges at several levels including class content, class conduct, and designing of educational experiences. But since early modern understandings of the emotions often made unexpected connections between diverse areas of philosophy, we may find that investigation reshapes our map of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy. Certainly, the understanding of the emotions produced in one area of philosophy was not isolated from their treatment in other areas.. I use the terms applied philosophy and engaged philosophy to mark two different ways of trying to connect moral and political philosophy with practical ethical questions. Im really just describing two different styles of approaching the issues, rather than precise methodologies, and its a distinction Ive observed and put into words rather than invented. The applied philosophy approach is to start with a reasonably well-worked out philosophical theory which one then applies to the world rather in the way you might simplistically imagine that a scientific theory is applied. Utilitarianism is the easiest example. The Utilitarian believes that they have the way to solve all ethical questions, and its simply a matter of working out the details when confronted with a particular case. Discussion has tended to focus on the moral relevance of emotions, and (except in ancient philosophy) the role of emotions in cognitive life has received little attention. Thirteen new essays investigate the continuities between medieval and early modern thinking about the emotions, and open up a contemporary debate on the relationship between emotions, cognition, and reason, and the way emotions figure in our own cognitive lives. A team of leading philosophers of the medieval, renaissance, and early modern periods explore these ideas from the point of view of four key themes: the situation of emotions within the human mind; the intentionality of emotions and their role in cognition; emotions and action; the role of emotion in self-understanding and the social situation of individuals.
Maurice OConnor Drury (called Con Drury by his friends) was born in Exeter in 1907, of Irish parentage. He attended the Grammar School of that city and then went in 1925 to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took the Moral Science Tripos. In 1929, Drury met Ludwig Wittgenstein, a newly appointed lecturer in philosophy at Trinity College. Wittgenstein had taken up a fellowship in that College following strenuous efforts by Frank Ramsey, Bertrand Russell and Maynard Keynes to bring him back to philosophy from self-imposed obscurity as a primary school teacher in remote mountain villages in Lower Austria. Drury and Wittgenstein met at a meeting of the Moral Science Club, in C.D. Broads rooms. There began a friendship between student and teacher that was to last through the many vicissitudes of their lives until the philosophers death from cancer in 1951 in the home of a medical friend of Drurys. ...
