As part of a new campaign to advocate for expanded health benefits for part-time faculty, Local 1493 distributed an online survey to all part-time faculty in the District to gauge the usefulness of the current stipend. This survey was timed to gather feedback for contract negotiations. The survey closed Wednesday, February 11, with 202 total respondents representing almost 1/3 of all part-timers in the District! Thanks to all of the faculty who completed the survey. Not only will the responses inform our negotiations of the health benefits stipend, but the aggregate data paint a rich and complex picture of the struggle many of our adjunct faculty members have with regards to paying for their healthcare. Hyperspectral imaging is an emerging field of electro-optical and infrared remote sensing. Advancements in sensing and processing technology have reached a level that allows hyperspectral imaging to be more widely applied to remote sensing problems. Because of this, I was asked roughly six years ago to serve as an adjunct faculty member at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Ohio to construct and teach a graduate course on this subject as part of their optical engineering program. As I searched for a suitable textbook from which to teach this course, it became apparent to me that there were none that provided the comprehensive treatment I felt the subject required. Hyperspectral remote sensing is a highly multidisciplinary field, and I believe that a student of this subject matter should appreciate and understand all of its major facets, including material spectroscopy, radiative transfer, imaging spectrometry, and hyperspectral data processing. There are many resources that suitably cover ...
A recent review published as an Expert Opinion in the Journal of Clinical Interventions in Aging outlines the link between specific nutrients and eye health. But the review, funded by a grant from Bausch + Lomb, also found that many Americans over age 50 dont consume enough of these nutrients in their daily diet to support their eye health. Elizabeth Johnson, Ph.D., a nutrition researcher at Tufts University and Helen Rasmussen, Ph.D., R.D., an adjunct faculty member at Lesley University, and authors of this review of published literature, focused on the antioxidants vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc and the omega-3 fatty acids eicosahexaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as important nutrients that can potentially help protect eye health as people age. "Many adults dont think about their eye health or sight until its too late to reverse the damage their eyes may have sustained," said Dr. Johnson. One issue with the labs is drug acquisition. The federal government has sought to limit the ability to buy the drugs needed to make meth. This has included a cap on how much one individual can buy at a pharmacy. However, as can be seen in this ABC7 article we see that the labs turned to "smurfing". Large groups of individuals go to pharmacies, buy the required over the counter drugs and then give the drugs to the lab. Pharmacies do not share information with one another so the pharmacies will take the buyers name down and look at a picture identification, and the buyer is free to go to the next pharmacy, without the first pharmacy warning the second ...
