Early-life exposure to household pets has the capacity to reduce risk for overweight and allergic disease, especially following caesarean delivery. Since there is some evidence that pets also alter the gut microbial composition of infants, changes to the gut microbiome are putative pathways by which pet exposure can reduce these risks to health. To investigate the impact of pre- and postnatal pet exposure on infant gut microbiota following various birth scenarios, this study employed a large subsample of 746 infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development Study (CHILD) cohort, whose mothers were enrolled during pregnancy between 2009 and 2012. Participating mothers were asked to report on household pet ownership at recruitment during the second or third trimester and 3 months postpartum. Infant gut microbiota were profiled with 16S rRNA sequencing from faecal samples collected at the mean age of 3.3 months. Two categories of pet exposure (i) only during pregnancy and (ii) pre- and

Dogs may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk in their owners by providing social support and motivation for physical activity. We aimed to investigate the association of dog ownership with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death in a register-based prospective nation-wide cohort (n = 3,432,153) with up to 12 years of follow-up. Self-reported health and lifestyle habits were available for 34,202 participants in the Swedish Twin Register. Time-to-event analyses with time-updated covariates were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). In single- and multiple-person households, dog ownership (13.1%) was associated with lower risk of death, HR 0.67 (95% CI, 0.65-0.69) and 0.89 (0.87-0.91), respectively; and CVD death, HR 0.64 (0.59-0.70), and 0.85 (0.81-0.90), respectively. In single-person households, dog ownership was inversely associated with cardiovascular outcomes (HR composite CVD 0.92, 95% CI, 0.89-0.94). Ownership of hunting breed dogs was ...

For a long time I believed that with every food recall story in the media, wed see more and more people start taking notice of whats going on in the food system - that food produced in factory environments is harming our health because everything is completely backward and geared toward the reign of big food and corporate agriculture - and that sustainable agriculture would start to become the order of the day.. Food recalls are not doing the job they should - they are not waking people up fast enough. The more we continue to support big agricultures products by ignoring these problems, the more control will be given to entities (the government) and corporations (Big Pharma and Big Agriculture - companies like Tyson, Smithfield, Swift, and Cargill who control over 80 percent of the food sold in our country) to dictate the future of food growth, production, sales, and health (or lack thereof).. The reality is, nothing will change until major modifications occur in the way we produce food. ...

In March 2007, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a notice that Menu Foods, Inc., a private label pet food manufacturer, was recalling certain lots of its cuts and gravy style dog and cat food produced in its facility in Emporia, Kansas, between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.. The recall was prompted after reported instances where dogs and cats developed kidney failure after eating the affected pet food. The products were packaged in cans and pouches under numerous brand names and were marketed nationwide by many pet food retailers. The FDA ultimately found that the pet foods contained a contaminated version of wheat gluten, a protein additive. The wheat gluten, produced in China, had been contaminated with a substance called melamine and a melamine byproduct called cyanuric acid. A large number of pets that ate the contaminated foods developed kidney stones and kidney disease.. The following year, melamine was also discovered in infant formula made in China. It has sickened ...

As we learned last month during Senior Pets Month, dogs need exercise to maintain strong muscles and joints, especially as they age. Without the proper dosage of a healthy diet and exercise, your dog's health will slowly decline and they will become lethargic, overweight and over all, unhappy. But, that's not all. Without exercise, dogs risk health complications such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, hip dysplasia and respiratory disease.Your dog's moods and behavior may even change, possibly becoming destructive. Think about it: After sitting at your work desk all day, don't you need a chance to burn off steam and stretch at the gym? It's the same for a dog. They have tons of energy; and if they don't have a way to burn off that energy with activity, they will find ways to entertain themselves, often at the pet owner's expense. As September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month, Deerbusters asks dog owners to keep these dog exercise tips in

N2 - Children are increasingly viewed as important recipients of educational interventions to improve animal welfare, yet research examining their perspectives is lacking, particularly within the UK. Helping children to care appropriately for animals depends, not least, on an ability to understand the needs of different species and correctly identify cues given by the animal that indicate its welfare state. This study began to explore: (a) childrens perceptions of welfare needs, focusing on four common pet animals; (b) influences on the development of knowledge; (c) beliefs about whether or not (all) animals are sentient, and (d) their confidence in identifying when their own pets are in need. Fourteen focus groups were carried out with 53 children aged 7 to 13 years. Findings highlighted an affirmative ...
In the past few years there have been multiple outbreaks related to pet food affecting the health of both pets and humans. Most people associate Salmonella as a bacterium linked to food borne illness in people food, but in recent years there have been quite a few outbreaks of Salmonella in pet food that has also affected humans. The most concerning aspect is that it primarily caused illness in small children. It was not believed to be caused by the children eating the dog food, but having interactions with the dog. After it was discovered that the outbreak was caused by tainted dog food, over 23,000 tons of pet food was recalled, and when the outbreak continued, the plant that produced the tainted dog food was closed down. There was also a pet food recall based on an aflatoxin contamination. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) categorizes aflatoxin as a naturally occurring fungal toxin that contaminates maize and other types of crops during production, harvest storage or processing1. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has increased their attention in a new area: pet food!. While the FDA is known for their attention to human food, they are now becoming active in the area of pet food. In fact, Congress directed the FDA to protect articles used for food and drink for both man and other animals. This means they must make sure that food is safe for our pets to eat, and it includes all types of pets, not just cats and dogs. The law also protects horses, hamsters, rabbits, and all other pets.. You might be asking, what could make pet food unsafe? Well, just like with human food, there could be unhealthy ingredients, or harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella. For example, the FDA monitors canned food for humans to ensure that there arent any harmful bacteria within the aluminum can. The same process is done for both canned and dry pet food.. The FDA also lists requirements for labels on pet food. There are four major requirements: ...
Image Source: Pixabay.com. Dogs are marvelous creatures. They do a lot for us. Theyre playful, mysterious, full of energy, loyal, friendly, and they keep us in touch with our youth. Dogs add a lot of comfort and warmth to our lives. Thats why we love and value them so much. But did you know that there are so many other things that they could do too?Owning and taking care of a dog can significantly help your heart health. Although there isnt any clear-cut evidence to support this, studies have found that people who own dogs are at a lower risk of developing heart conditions.Dealing with the random barking sessions at 3 am in the morning and chewed up slippers or dog hair all over your favorite sofa seems like a small price to pay to ensure the health of your heart.. Dog ownership can also cut the risk of acquiring other fatal diseases.. Owning a dog takes a lot of responsibility. Background: Although research indicates that second-hand smoke (SHS) harms both human and animal health, data on the percentage of pet owners who smoke or allow smoking in their homes are not readily available.. Objective: To investigate pet owners smoking behaviour and policies on smoking in their homes, and the potential for educational interventions to motivate change in pet owners smoking behaviour.. Methods: A web-based survey was used with 3293 adult pet owners. The main outcome measures were smoking behaviour of pet owners and their cohabitants; policies on smoking in pet owners homes; and impact of information about the dangers of pet exposure to SHS on pet owners smoking intentions.. Results: Of respondents, 21% were current smokers and 27% of participants lived with at least one smoker. The purpose of this study was to validate estimated energy intake from a web-based food recall, designed for children and adolescents. We directly compared energy intake to estimates of total energy expenditure, calculated from accelerometer outputs, combined with data on weight and sex or resting energy expenditure prediction equations. Children (8-9 years) and adolescents (12-14 years) were recruited through schools in Norway in 2013 (N = 253). Results showed that more than one third (36-37%) were identified as under-reporters of energy. In contrast, only 2-4% were defined as over-reporters of energy. The mean energy intake was under-reported with -1.83 MJ/day for the entire study sample. Increased underestimation was observed for overweight and obese participants, the oldest age group (12-14 years), boys, those with parents/legal guardians with low educational level and those living in non-traditional families. In conclusion, energy intake from the web-based food recall is significantly

In many countries where companion dogs are popular, owners are strongly encouraged to neuter their dogs. Consequently, millions of dogs are neutered each year. In recent times considerable attention has been paid to the possible effects of such procedures on canine health and welfare. Less scrutinized are the potential ramifications of widespread neutering on the breeding of dogs and their continued success as human companions. This paper summarizes research investigating factors influencing the breeding and rearing of dogs most suited to companionship roles in contemporary, typically high-density, communities, and briefly reviews current breeder practices. It then argues that a fundamental shift to promote inclusion of

By Linda Bren. Choosing a pet food from among the cans, bags, and boxes stacked on store shelves can be a daunting experience. Which formulation of food is best? Is my dog old enough for adult formula? Does my cat really need premium? Will Fido be healthier on natural food and will Fluffy fully appreciate gourmet? U.S. consumers spend more than $11 billion a year on cat and dog food, according to the Pet Food Institute. And pet food manufacturers compete for these dollars by trying to make their products stand out among the many types of dry, moist, and semi-moist foods available. Pet food packaging carries such descriptive words as senior, premium, super-premium, gourmet, and natural. These terms, however, have no standard definition or regulatory meaning. But other terms do have specific meanings, and pet foods, which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administrations Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), must carry certain information on their labels. Consumers can be ...

Most pet owners do all they can to protect the health of their beloved pet. As dogs and cats grow older, keeping them healthy and strong becomes more of a challenge. One of the biggest issues older dogs and cats face is joint issues. When the joints do not have ample cartilage, fluid movements become difficult and discomfort can follow. No pet owner wants to see their pet lying around simply because they do not feel comfortable while walking, running, and playing. Thankfully, there are pet supplements that can ease discomfort and promote healthier joints. It is important a pet owner knows what to look for in a joint supplement so they can make sure they make the right purchase:. ...

Over the past few months, NEPA has come together to make sure no one goes hungry during these tough times- including our four-legged friends. The NEPA Animal Welfare Collaborative held a pet food distribution in Scranton on August 1. The event provided free dog and cat food to pet owners who are struggling with the economic impact of COVID-19.. This was the Collaboratives third pet food pantry event. On Saturday alone, volunteers served over 350 pets in need. Between all three events, they provided food for a total of 560 pets.. The Schwartz-Mack Foundation, the Robert H. Spitz Foundation and the Scranton Area Community Foundation sponsored the pet food pantry. The Scranton Animal Shelter Supply House oversaw the distribution.. The more we can help people provide for their pets, the less likely these animals will be surrendered at shelters because their owners are unable to take care of them, said Katrina Sonnenberg of the Scranton Animal Shelter Supply House.. The NEPA Animal Welfare ...
But Sabbie claimed the Navys treatment of her after her transition was not pleasant.. Not long after she returned to work she contracted a urinary tract infection. It was after having treatment for the UTI that doctors discovered she had transitioned.. I was kept in the psychiatric ward for six months as they did not know how to handle to case, she told Gaylaxy.. They were confused and were planning to initially discharge me from service on medical grounds by pointing that I was suffering from depression or some other mental illness and was not fit for service.. Sabbie was kept in the mens section of the psychiatric ward under heavy, round-the-clock guard until she underwent psychological evaluation in Kolkata.. The doctors agreed she had gender dysphoria but was fit to return to duties. She was discharged from the hospital and went back to work in April this year.. The decision to discharge Sabbie from the Navy has upset her greatly, as she hoped to build a naval career.. I was selected ...
Is the Pet Food Industry in the Business of Population Control?. By Dogtor J. This is the title of one of my first articles…after I discovered the truth about the ingredients in pet food. Does that question seem like a totally absurd notion? Is it possible that the manufacturers of our pets food are so out of touch with the animals nutritional requirements that they make their formulary blunders by accident ? After studying the effects of gluten, dairy, soy, and corn on the health of people and their pets for the past seven years and reading what researchers have known for years, I have come to the conclusion that there is something seriously wrong in Mudville.. After this incredible pet food recall story, any pet owner with a functional brain has to be questioning why we feed dogs and cats the way we do. Notice that I did not include veterinarians in that last sentence. I am afraid that we have been too thoroughly programmed to look at this situation with the eyes of a child. And once ...

On the 21st March 2020, the UK Government published Guidance on shielding and protecting people defined on medical grounds as extremely vulnerable from COVID-19.3 It stated This guidance is for people, including children, who are at very high risk of severe illness from coronavirus (COVID-19) because of an underlying health condition, and for their family, friends and carers….This includes the extremely clinically vulnerable people living in long-term care facilities, either for the elderly or persons with special needs. This removed some people on the influenza vaccine list, or whose only risk factor was age, but kept others.. These letters were sent to over 2 million UK citizens. The extremely vulnerable group included people with organ transplants, haematological cancers, severe asthma and chronic obstructive airways disease. They were advised to shield, which meant staying at home, avoiding face-to-face contact with anyone else, for 12 weeks.8 The duration was subsequently extended ...
It is our collective view that the most important implications of our findings relate to the current legal justification for abortion in the UK, New Zealand and a number of other jurisdictions in which abortion is authorised principally on medical grounds. In all of these jurisdictions, the great majority of abortions are authorised on mental health grounds. Our findings strongly challenge the use of mental health criteria as a routine justification for abortion. Our results suggest that the mental health risks of having an abortion may be greater and are certainly no less than the risks of coming to term with an unwanted pregnancy. Further, as far as we can tell, there is no evidence that suggests that the mental health risks of abortion are less than those of continuing with an unwanted pregnancy. To establish this would require a series of replicated studies showing that the mental health outcomes of those having an abortion are better than those of an equivalent series of women coming to ...
Section 8 of the Victorian Abortion Law Reform Act 2008 compels doctors who have conscientious objections to performing abortions to refer such patients to doctors who they know have no such objections. Family Voice Australia (FAVA) describes this astonishing piece of double-think imposed on doctors: I cannot accept that what you are asking me to do is morally or medically right. But I must, by law, send you to someone who thinks otherwise. I will suppress my own conscientious belief and help you to do what I consider to be wrong and harmful. The health risks of abortion such as psychological trauma, future premature births, increased risk of breast cancer are well documented. Yet medical practitioners, who on medical grounds alone consider it inadvisable for a particular patient to have an abortion, may find their right to practice under threat if they are unwilling to perform or refer for an abortion. Contact your local MP and urge him/her to support an Amendment to the Abortion Act to ...

Joe Pryweller, an analyst for The Freedonia Group, an industry market research consultancy (www.freedoniagroup.com) writes in Food Safety Magazine that food packaging can significantly influence the quality and safety of the food product in question by providing a barrier to moisture and other environmental conditions that may result in contamination and/or spoilage.. The U.S. demand for pet food packaging is expected to rise 4.8 percent annually to $2.5 billion by 2018. Growth will be based on the use of higher value, more sophisticated packaging and continued strength in pet food shipments. The proliferation of premium pet food brands will also spur packaging demand growth, as higher value containers will be required to provide superior graphics, puncture resistance to reduce likelihood of contamination and barrier protection for these more expensive, higher-quality products.. While limited design flexibility and the inconvenience of opening cans have been the chief drawbacks of metal pet food ...
With reports that acetaminophen has been found in brands of cat and dog food not included on the Menu Foods recall list, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today reminded pet parents that vigilance is the key to keeping their pets safe and healthy-coupled with a strong dose of common sense.. Though reports of dogs and cats poisoned from the Menu Foods recall seem to have abated, this news is extremely worrying, said Dr. Steven Hansen, a board-certified toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCAs Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), located in its Midwest Office in Urbana, Ill.. Our data show that if an average-sized cat ingests as little as one extra-strength acetaminophen pain-reliever caplet and is not treated in time, it can suffer fatal consequences, continued Dr. Hansen. Depending on the amount ingested, clinical effects can include a condition called methemoglobinemia, which affects the ability of blood ...

For the conscientious pet owner, shopping for pet food can be frustrating and bewildering. Which is best for your pets health? Is the pretty picture on the package indicative of the food inside? Or does the higher price mean higher quality? There is only one way to know, and that is to read the list of ingredients -- but you have to know how to read them.. Whats in a Name?. How a food is named is an indication of the amount of good ingredients it has, but this can get very tricky. Thats why the names that are given to pet foods is watched closely by the agencies that regulate pet foods.. The rules for naming go like this:. The ingredient list must be printed in order of most to least amount of the ingredients present, so when chicken is the first ingredient in a food, ground yellow corn the second, and corn gluten meal the third, you can be sure that by weight, theres more chicken than ground yellow corn, and more ground yellow corn than corn gluten meal.. If the food begins with the ...

Earlier this week our staff had two incidents of helping people who were the victims of dog bites, and each week we review dozens of pet stories about aggressive dogs. That is why our first article this week is dedicated to the victims of dog bits and the owners of the aggressive dogs who bit them.
