Mirko Zimic of Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru will develop a simple, low-cost lung ultrasound device that can automatically diagnose bacterial pneumonia and measure nutritional status in children in low-resource settings. They have developed an algorithm to detect lung infiltrates from digital ultrasound images as evidence of pneumonia in children, and have built a prototype device, which comprises an ultrasound probe connected to a laptop or smartphone for realtime analysis of the images. Visible and audio alerts are used to notify the technician of suspect regions. They will develop an additional algorithm to automatically measure anatomical parameters including rib diameter and skin thickness for predicting levels of malnutrition, and test it in a hospital in Peru. Ultimately, this will be incorporated into the ultrasound device so that both pneumonia and malnutrition can be easily diagnosed together by non-specialized health care workers.. ...

A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Peruvian Amazon to test the hypothesis that a reservoir of asymptomatic malaria parasitemic patients would form the basis for continuing malaria endemicity in the region. Active surveillance yielded a Plasmodium spp. slide-positive prevalence of 4.2% (43 of 1,023) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive prevalence of 17.6% (144 of 819). Plasmodium vivax prevalence was 2.9% and 14.2% while Plasmodium falciparum prevalence was 1.3% and 2.6% by microscopy and PCR, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of slide-positive and one-fourth of PCR-positive people were symptomatic. Anemia was associated with slide positivity (P < 0.001) and PCR positivity for P. falciparum (P = 0.003). Sensitivity of field microscopy and agreement between field and reference laboratory microscopists were low, arguing for using PCR for epidemiologic investigation and malaria control. While these data confirm recent findings from the Brazilian Amazon suggesting that sufficient

In partnership with The Unions Lima office and the National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP) of the Peruvian Ministry of Health, TREAT TB completed an operational research course in Peru based on the SORT IT model. The course consisted of three modules between September 2015 and September 2016 and aimed to enable NTP staff members to develop the skills needed to conduct OR studies and generate evidence to help control TB in Peru and other high-burden countries.. TB remains a serious threat to public health in Peru. Moreover, the burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases is a threat to tuberculosis control. Because the Peruvian NTP has a sophisticated MDR-TB surveillance and data collection system, TREAT TB aimed to build on the progress Peru already achieved by equipping key NTP staff members with OR skills to enable them to use the information collected to strengthen TB control activities in the country.. The course consisted of three five-day modules: "Developing a Research ...

The largest metropolis in the Peruvian Amazon, east of the Andes, it is the ninth most populous city of Peru. It is known as the "capital of the Peruvian Amazon". The city is located in the Great Plains of the Amazon Basin, fed by the Amazon, Nanay, and Itaya rivers. Overall, it constitutes the Iquitos metropolitan area, a conurbation of 471,993 inhabitants consisting of four districts: Iquitos, Punchana, Belén, and San Juan Bautista. It is the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road - it is accessible only by river and air.[5] The area was long inhabited by indigenous peoples. Peruvian Ribereño Spanish or Peruvian Coastal Spanish is the form of the Spanish language spoken in the coastal region of Peru. The Spanish spoken in Coastal Peru has four characteristic forms today: the original one, that of the inhabitants of Lima (known as limeños) near the Pacific coast and parts south, (formerly from the old section of the city from where it spread to the entire coastal region); the inland immigrant sociolect (more influenced by Andean languages); the Northern, in Trujillo, Chiclayo or Piura; and the Southern. The majority of Peruvians speak Peruvian Coast Spanish, as Peruvian Coast Spanish is the standard dialect of Spanish in Peru. Between 1535 and 1739, Lima was the capital of the Spanish Empire in South America, from where Hispanic culture spread, and its speech became the "purest"[clarification needed] since it was the home of the famous University of San Marcos of Lima. Also, it was the city that had the highest number of titles of nobility from Castile outside of ...
I arrived into Limas Jorge Chavez International Airport on Friday June 5th, after a personal trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. I had come to Peru for a 5-day Indigenous summit in the southern Peruvian Andes and decided to take a few days off at the end to see these world-renowned sights, thinking I may not have the chance again. At the summit, we had been informed there of the situation on the ground in the Amazon. Alberto Pizango, president of the organization AIDESEP, the Inter-ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Amazon, which represents 400,000 Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon, had even come to the summit to speak.

This thesis draws on womens lived experience as recipients of state programmes and services aimed at poor mothers to explore contradictions in processes of development and social inclusion. Womens ambivalent responses to these programmes raise important questions, first of all, about being the targeted object and what for poor mothers means to those so categorised, and secondly, about the act of targeting, and how it can serve both as a constraint and as a resource.. State concern with chronic child malnutrition serves as the entrance point to my research, carried out in rural Ayacucho, Peru, from October 2012 to November 2013. This project was motivated by concerns regarding the medicalisation of food scarcity, as malnutrition, and how this approach spread to further interventions by the state to shape parenting in the rural Andes. I examine three programmes: (1.) mothers interactions with the local public health centre, which is at the forefront of the states effort to reduce chronic ...

Data and research on public governance including budgeting, public expenditure, public-private partnerships (PPPs), public sector innovation, public employment and public finances., The economic performance of Peru in recent times has been impressive. There is now a transition underway as commodity prices fall, and the key challenge for Peru is how to improve productivity and maintain this growth trajectory. Peru is a territorially diverse country and addressing these challenges will require policies that are designed for the specific needs of different cities and regions. The importance of regional policies is particularly important for the case of Peru. Within the OECD only four countries have a larger land mass. The physical geography of the country is shaped by a thin coastal region, the Andes and the Amazon forest in the interior. These different areas are not well connected and have vastly different levels of service provision and infrastructure. The report sets out how regional policies can be

Peru declared its independence in 1821, and remaining Spanish forces were defeated in 1824. After a dozen years of military rule, Peru returned to democratic leadership in 1980, but experienced economic problems and the growth of a violent insurgency. President Alberto FUJIMORIs election in 1990 ushered in a decade that saw a dramatic turnaround in the economy and significant progress in curtailing guerrilla activity. Nevertheless, the presidents increasing reliance on authoritarian measures and an economic slump in the late 1990s generated mounting dissatisfaction with his regime, which led to his resignation in 2000. Miss Peru Universe 2012 has made a public apology to the Peruvian gay rights movement for a series of anti-gay jibes.. Beauty queen Cindy Mejia, Miss Peru 2012, recently stated that god wouldnt allow her to have a gay son.. She also stated that boys only turn gay because of their father being absent, or because they have been raped or are too close to their mother and sisters.. Her comments caused an uproar in the Peruvian media especially as Mejia initially said her statements were taken out of context and distorted, which turned out to be false when the whole recording of the interview was published online.. Twitter users throughout Peru have decided to crown Mejia with the title Miss Homophobia using the Twitter hashtag #Misshomofobia (Spanish).. A public debate is ensuing whether the beauty queen should lose her crown for her homophobic statements.. Provenance analysis of Pleistocene terrace deposits, together with modern sediments from the same streams, from four catchments draining the western margin of the Andes in Peru is used to infer changes in erosion patterns between the past and the present period by matching detrital zircon ages with crystallization ages of source rocks. Age populations suggest major changes in sediment provenance through the past 100 k.y. At present, sediment sources are mainly located along the steep middle reaches of the rivers, whereas during the Pleistocene, sources were additionally located in the low-relief headwaters of these catchments. These shifts in the loci of erosion are interpreted to reflect changes in precipitation patterns, where periods of stronger precipitation on the Altiplano allowed the entrainment of material from the low-relief plateau in the past. In contrast, modern precipitation patterns result in negligible erosion rates on the Altiplano, and the site of material entrainment shifts to ...

HIV incidence is high among MSM in Lima, Peru, and bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HSV-2 are prevalent in both recently and chronically HIV-infected MSM as well as HIV-uninfected MSM. Bisexual HIV-infected MSM could be an important bridge transmitting HIV and other STDs to women. Interventions to reduce both HIV and STDs are urgently needed among MSM in Peru. Given these associations and the high prevalence of STDs among MSM in Lima, prevention of HIV infections is dependent partially on innovative methods to control bacterial and viral STDs among high-risk HIV-uninfected MSM. Peru kick-started their World Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay on Friday.. A first-half goal from Jefferson Farfan was all Ricardo Garecas men needed at the Estadio Nacional de Lima.. The much-needed win helped Peru to their first win of the campaign, while it marked Paraguays first defeat.. Farfan produced the decisive moment after some questionable defending by the visitors in the 20th minute.. The former Schalke forward was left in space on the left before receiving a pass from Paolo Guerrero and finishing past Antony Silva.. There were question marks over Silva, who was beaten at his near post by the powerful effort.. Paraguay rarely threatened and it came as no surprise for a team that had scored just once in their opening two qualifiers.. The win is a huge boost for Peru ahead of Tuesdays clash against Brazil, while Paraguay host Bolivia.. ...
