Identifying risk factors for cardiovascular mortality has special public health relevance. We found that the association between downsizing and cardiovascular death was titleest in the years immediately after reductions in personnel. We did not find corresponding results for other causes of death. The time dependent effect pattern and outcome specificity indicate a causal interpretation of the association between downsizing and cardiovascular mortality, rather than a confounded association.20 Downsizing may act as a trigger for fatal cardiovascular disease and a prognostic factor in people with pre-existing cardiovascular disease.. Two major criticisms of previous evidence on work stress and disease are that exposures and outcomes are often both substantively subjective and that analyses are not controlled for the confounding effect of material disadvantage.21 We feel that our study is able to surmount these criticisms. We used objective data to assess exposure and outcome, eliminating the ...
The aim of this study was to analyze the odds of psychological ill health in workers exposed to recent downsizing, as compared to employees in stable workplaces. In extension to previous research, we considered the exposures to both strategic and reactive downsizing in a large multi-country sample. Our findings suggest that the manner in which downsizing is undertaken makes a substantial difference as to whether the exposed workers will suffer from symptoms of depression, anxiety or emotional exhaustion. In the case of strategic downsizing, we observed no increased risk of psychological ill health. This result is well in line with an earlier study in a British chemical processing plant which implemented strategic downsizing without negative consequences for psychological health of employees; the company put a heavy emphasis on retraining and redeploying staff to maintain skill levels and minimize job losses [15]. Our earlier analysis of a smaller data set showed that the majority of redeployees ...
To downsize or not to downsize? Thats the engine-development question facing all OEMs. In an initial move to be seen to be more environmentally responsible, for many, downsizing seemed to be a thoroughly sensible answer. Engineers were delighted to demonstrate their ideas for extracting maximum energy from minimum cubic capacity- and marketing executives were equally delighted with the advent of a new angle for product promotion. But as with most elements of automotive engineering, engine downsizing has proven to be not quite that simple. "Rightsizing" is the alternate term to emerge to describe rather more pragmatic solutions to reducing a vehicles carbon footprint. Not as emotive or positive-sounding as downsizing, rightsizing nevertheless has found approval among several OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Arguably, "rightsizing" simply means doing it as its always been done. For an OEM, the whole point of engine design is to match it to the entire vehicle and sell the result in large numbers at ...
In this paper I like to discuss the method and concept of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which in Sweden has been named validering, (validation). This has now become a well established concept and model for especially authorities to discuss and in practice visualise and assess the knowledge and competence among unemployed citizens, with the aim to enhance the chances for employment. In short, RPL is both a way to visualise but also to assess and formulate former knowledge and competence that a person has gained, most often at their time at a workplace. Many times this experience is not explicitly formulated, nor documented, which in a situation of organisational downsizing or other types of changes can mean that a person has problems in clearly making the knowledge and skill knowledgeable to a future employer. It is in this challenging situation for the individual that RPL can be of great importance. In focus in this paper is with the results made from an EU funded work as ground discuss ...
Background. Burnout is a psychological reaction triggered by interaction between personal characteristics and stress factors. Reorganizations and downsizing with increased workload imply stress for health-care professionals. This is a study of burnout in nurses during a period with two comprehensive reorganizations. Methods. In this quasi-experimental retrospective cohort study, burnout was assessed in nurses with long work experience in three surveys during a 30 months period with two comprehensive reorganizations and downsizing of a hospital unit with mostly seriously ill patients with cancer. Burnout was measured with Bergen Burnout Indicator (BBI) at each survey, and "Sense of Coherence" (SOC) with Antonovskys questionnaire at the last survey. Results. One man and 45 women aged 30 to 65 years were invited to the surveys. There was a significant increase in burnout during the study period, the mean increase in BBI-score was 12.5 pr year (p , 0.001). The proportion of satisfied nurses at the ...

by Ann C. Hodges and Porcher L. Taylor, III. 6 Colum. Sci. & Tech. L. Rev. 3 (2005) (Published April 15, 2005). Abstract. The recent rapid pace of technological change has made human capital more important, yet it has rendered the employees knowledge base obsolete more quickly. Employers use covenants not to compete, restricting employees from switching to work for competitors, in order to retain knowledgeable personnel. Currently, the lack of predictability in interpreting noncompete agreements allows employers to draft overly-lengthy noncompetes, encourages enforcement litigation, and curtails employees from changing jobs because of the fear of litigation. Employees should not be prevented from working for competitors for longer than is necessary to protect the employers legitimate interest. Use of obsolescence as a guide in drafting noncompete agreements should provide the protection employers need without overburdening the employees option to change jobs. Judges should utilize ...
A federal court decided that a Massachusetts employee whose position was downsized at about the same time she was filling out the paperwork for her maternity leave might have suffered pregnancy discrimination. Victoria Domenichetti worked as an externship coordinator for Premier Education Group, which ran the Salter School, a career-training school with a campus in Fall River. Her job involved placing students in externship opportunities. She had been working for about a year when she became pregnant and was due to give birth in August 2012. In May, she began filling out the FMLA paperwork for her upcoming leave. Meanwhile, the school was faced with declining enrollment. In May, 2012, William Anjos, Premiers senior vice president of operations and chief financial officer, told Paul Ferrise, a regional vice president, to develop a plan to reduce staff expenses for the campuses in his region. On May 16, 2012, at a time when Anjos and Ferrise said they had no knowledge of Domenichettis pregnancy, ...
Barclays, Pearson and Virgin Media have all announced significant job cuts as part of a growing pressure to cut costs, adding up to more than 6,000 job cuts in total. Firms are increasingly turning to cost-reduction strategies as a coping mechanism for competitive and difficult economic conditions. But while these strategies help to reduce costs in the short-term, these cuts can have much bigger, and fundamentally important implications for the identity of the firm and their long-term competitiveness ,,. Shelley Harrington. Job cuts save money but can hurt business in the long-run. January 22, 2016 4.55pm GMT. https://theconversation.com/job-cuts-save-money-but-can-hurt-business-in-the-long-run-53581. ,, In todays business environment, employee downsizing is a widespread strategy aimed at improving firm performance and competitiveness. The literature, however, highlights unequivocal findings that many downsizing initiatives fail to retain critical skills, capabilities, experience and knowledge. ...

I often find working with couples that one wants to downsize but has agreed to purchase a large property with their spouse.. I advise them to find a home that seems intimate despite its large size. I tell them, You dont want to feel youre rattling around in an oversized place that seems lonely, especially when youre there by yourself. I recommend they avoid a property with a two-story atrium or ceilings that soar 10 feet or higher. Likewise, they should avoid a home with an oversized formal living room theyre unlikely to use often.. The coziest arrangement is to have a big family room right off the kitchen, because people spend most of their time in the kitchen area.. Finally, I tell them not to assume that a place they buy upon retirement will be their last home.. ...
The answer hinges on another question: Are tiny homes just a trend for wealthy minimalists or an economic necessity for the growing poor? On the one hand, theyre better for the environment and less wasteful than traditional homes. On the other, they may be the bare minimum that impoverished individuals can afford.

Im moving into a smaller room within my apartment to save a little bit on my monthly rent. That $60 each month adds up! Were fortunately between roommates for one of the rooms so that gives everybody a chance to play musical rooms without too much frenzy. Anyway, I have moved approximately half of my stuff into the new room. I love it with this amount of stuff in it (okay even a little more stuff would be okay, like on the shelves above the desk, for example). But I still feel like I want to seriously pare down on my possessions ...

As fuel prices continue to be unstable the drive towards more fuel efficient powertrains is increasing. For engine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) this means engine downsizing coupled with alternative forms of power to create hybrid systems. Understanding the effect of engine downsizing on vehicle interior NVH is critical in the development of such systems. The objective of this work was to develop a vehicle model that could be used with analytical engine mount force data to predict the vehicle interior noise and vibration response. The approach used was based on the assumption that the largest contributor to interior noise and vibration below 200 Hz is dominated by engine mount forces. An experimental transfer path analysis on a Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with a Cummins ISB 6.7L engine was used to create the vehicle model. The vehicle model consisted of the engine mount forces and vehicle paths that define the interior noise and vibration ...

I dont know why you bother posting that link as part of your response. I dont know anyone who works at American Airlines, never flown with them nor have I owned their stock. If they cease to exist tomorrow I could not care less.. Now as far as this anesthesia...I suppose it is. Out of the maybe couple hundred people I know (friends, family, casual acquaintances, e-buddies etc), excluding current co-workers, I know of 2 people who lost their job in the past year. One has since found a new job and was out of work barely a month. As far as co-workers, 4 of them got canned that was disguised as a downsizing. In fact replacements have already been hired for 2 of them. I can tell you that those 4 people were deadweight bringing my company down. If thats what a recession does, then too bad we dont have more recessions.. So what is that? Maybe a 1-2% unemployment rate from people I know? Just because an elephant took a big dump in your own backyard doesnt mean it took one everywhere.. In fact your ...
Linked employer-employee data for Brazil over a period of large-scale trade liberalization document two salient workforce changeovers. Within the traded-goods sector, there is a marked occupation downgrading and a simultaneous education upgrading by which employers fill expanding low-skill intensive occupations with increasingly educated jobholders. Between sectors, there is a labor demand shift towards the least and the most skilled, which can be traced back to relatively weaker declines of traded-goods industries that intensely use low-skilled labor and to relatively stronger expansions of nontraded-output industries that intensely use high-skilled labor. Whereas these observations are broadly consistent with predictions of Heckscher-Ohlin trade theory for a low-skill abundant economy, classic trade theory is a less useful guide to the observed reallocation pattern. Establishment-level regressions show that exporters exhibit significant employment downsizing. Workforce changeovers are neither ...

By Kate Wendleton and Dale Dauten. Dear Kate & Dale: My sister could get fired or quit and have a new job within weeks. I, however, have been looking for nearly a year. My sister said she never tells prospective employers that she was fired, because they can verify only whether or not you worked at the company. Is this true, and would you recommend it? It seems dishonest, but I am the one still looking for employment. Shon Kate: On the employment application, in the "reason for leaving" box, you should not state that you were fired. That s too harsh. Instead, write, "Prefer to explain in person," and then have a good story. Why were you fired? Most times, it s impersonal. That is, the company was downsizing and you were caught in it, or you worked for a boss who fired everybody. Dale: Yes, have a story, but if I m the manager and I see "prefer to explain in person," I roll my eyes and put the application in the reject pile. Who s going to volunteer to hear someone s tale of woe? Instead, I d put ...
as an electron microscopist, then graduated to supervisor of 5 different clinical labs. She asked me to help, and soon we had 11 accounts and our own little business. She did full-time, I was part-time. Well, at the hospital, with downsizing and buy-outs, my labs which previously employed almost 30 people, were soon down to 7, then 5. When they told me I had to lay off another person (even with the workload climbing), I laid off myself, and went to doing MT full-time. My terminology base was great, but going back and forth to those doctors offices, picking up microcassettes, printing reports, etc. got to be a hassle so when I located to another area of the country, I sought out employment at home. E&S underwriters have already proven their mettle when it comes to dealing with rapidly evolving and seemingly uninsurable risks.. In the results the picture of the departments might be considered too positive. Actually booth departments have gone through several difficulties such as mergers, and never-ending cuts in resources. Other difficulties have been conflicts about the philosophy of caring, as well as ongoing problems with organisational structural reconstruction. Consequently, these departments faced problems in the same way as others did. However, the intention of this study has been to concretise and increase understanding of what contributes to a healthy working life during a period of downsizing and restructuring. The results cannot provide definite answers concerning what are generally seen as determining factors for a healthy workplace, since there are certain given conditions for the two departments being studied with regard to the cooperation-oriented nature of their care and their small scale. Nevertheless, it is necessary to once again point out that these departments have faced the same demands for ...
Oh my dear Frances,. I can so identify with what you are feeling. Eight years ago, I was married, owned my own four bedroom home, was making good money at a high level position for a major defense contractor when the rug got pulled out from me. Living so many years under stressful situations just caught up with me and I ended up crashing and burning. I had to go on disability. I divorced my Autistic husband who had started to cheat on me, sold the house and moved back to my home town. I lived with my parents briefly, but that was totally unsatisfactory...I just couldnt get along with my mother. I had no friends to fall back on. I moved into a two bedroom townhouse, downsizing and putting all my extra belongings into the basement of the townhouse. I wasnt making it there financially on my disability check, so when the landlord went to raise the rent, I was forced to move into a two bedroom apartment. Now a lot of my stuff is stashed all over my parents house and Im constantly having to search ...

Whats happened is, that the result of just the most recent downsizing of the hospital has had a dramatic impact on the health-care industry. Well, given recent changes with IP and the properties it did, might still or may not in the future control, it seems as if some downsizing and focusing on the least marginal into a smaller realm overall might be under way. Until that process is complete - and by complete I mean stable for a few years, not that its ever not ongoing - the potential value of IP as a partner wont be measurable. Trust, however - thats a judgement based on how much people do what they say they are going to do and live up to their commitments, whether its convenient or not. Somebody plans a THOMAS event and a hurricane happens during that time, maybe you cut them some slack..... somebody misjudges, and quibbles after the fact, maybe not so much. The intangibles matter. It *is* possible to run mintty under ConEmu. However, ConEmu is designed as a wrapper around the windows console and doesnt understand Unix-style terminals such as mintty. Therefore it runs mintty as a graphical process, basically reparenting its window. (You can run MS Paint in ConEmu in the same way...). It works reasonably well, but recent builds of ConEmu exhibit a problem with focus, moving between mintty instances with the keyboard or mouse doesnt always move typing ...
