Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was designed to help identify personal, social, and behavioral problems in psychiatric patients.
Why is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory [MMPI]) significant and how does it impact the development of psychological testing in the 21st.
personality tests, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), might be more sensitive to reflectsubclinical personality and be more state-dependent in an individuals lifetime, so they are good scales to predict thepsychological distress regarding certain states. The aim of this study was to identify the specific pattern between body mass index(BMI) and psychological distress using the objective personality test. We investigated BMI and the Korean Military MultiphasicPersonality Inventory (MPI). A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 19-yr-old examinees who were admittedto the Military Manpower Administration in Korea from February 2007 to January 2010. Of 1,088,107 examinees, we enrolled771,408 subjects who were psychologically apparent healthy possible-military-service groups. Afterwards, we reviewed andanalyzed directly measured BMI and MPI results. In terms of the validity scales, the faking-good subscale showed an invertedU-shaped association, and ...
Suicide is a major social issue, affected by both social and psychopathological factors. This study investigated suicide risk assessment using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). Data were collected from 7824 college students using the MMPI-2-RF. The participants were classified into high-, moderate-, and low-risk for suicide groups based on their scores on the structured Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for comparative analysis. The relationships between scores on the Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales of the MMPI-2-RF and suicide risk level were investigated using a multiple logistic regression. Out of the 7824 participants, 964 (12.3%) were identified as being at risk of suicide. There were 553 participants considered low-risk, 312 moderate-risk, and 99 at high-risk. Suicide risk in the participants tended to increase as RC scale scores increased. Out of the nine RC scales, the Demoralization (RCd) and Negative Emotions (RC7) scale
The present study was an attempt to examine the relationship between personality variables and neuropsychological deficits in chronic schizophrenic subjects. The groups were composed of 73 chronic schizophrenic subjects with measureable cortical atrophy on CAT-Scan and 118 chronic schizophrenic subjects without identifiable brain damage. The relationship between neuropsychological deficit and personality variables was tested by means of discriminant analysis. As hypothesized, the brain-damaged group was found to have a stronger relationship between the neuropsychological deficits and the personality variables than the nonbrain-damaged group. Canonical correlation was used to demonstrate the underlying neuropsychological pattern which was found related to the personality profile of the MMPI for the entire sample of chronic schizophrenics. A frontal and anterior temporal lobe neuropsychological profile was found related to a particular personality profile.
The co-morbidity of mental illness with personality disorder is a controversial topic, made difficult by disagreement over diagnosis and the fundamentals of personality structure. However, there would appear to be four possible points of view:. 1Personality disorder and mental illness cannot exist simultaneously. This position perhaps provides the weakest argument, with little empirical evidence. However, the process of medical diagnosis perhaps implies that each is mutually exclusive.. 2 All mentally ill people have a personality disorder. This may have some validity, as there is increasing evidence that those people with a mental illness may have a biological vulnerability, which may include some personal characteristics. However, the evidence for this position seems to suggest that those personality differences are not of a severity to enable a diagnosis of personality disorder.. 3 Some personality disordered people will develop mental illness but that each can occur separately. This view is ...

It is possible that a norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene polymorphism is involved in the reward dependence-related personality trait. Although all previous research findings are based on Cloningers model, it is thought necessary to examine the relationship between NET gene polymorphisms and the personality dimension of reward dependence, as assessed by not only Cloningers model but also various other personality assessments, such as the five-factor model. In this study, we examined the relationship between three NET gene polymorphisms (1287G/A, -182T/C, and -3081A/T) and NEO-FFI, which is one of the self-report questionnaires based on the five-factor model of personality. The genotype and allele frequencies of the NET gene polymorphisms observed in this study were consistent with the genotype [1287G/A: χ2 (2)=0.695, p=0.707; -182T/C: χ2 (2)=2.274, p=0.321] and allele [1287 G/A: χ2 (1)=0.061, p=0.805; -182T/C: χ2 (1)=1.029, p=0.310] frequencies observed in the HapMap ...
Women undergo physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy, labor and lactation. The psychological adaptations can be affective, cognitive and behavioral and can be measured by dimensional personality instruments. This study aims to compare (1) the personality profile in mothers after birth with a normative group of non-lactating women and to examine (2) whether the personality profile differs 2 days, 2 months and 6 months after birth between mothers who have been exposed to epidural anesthesia, oxytocin administration or neither. Sixty-nine primiparae were assigned to four groups: mothers having received oxytocin infusion during labor (OT iv group, n=9), mothers having received epidural analgesia with/without oxytocin infusion (EDA group, n=23), mothers having received 10 iU oxytocin intramuscularly after birth (OT im group, n=15) and mothers having received none of these treatments (unmedicated group, n=22). At 2 days and 2 and 6 months postpartum mothers completed the Karolinska ...
Background: Type D personality has been proposed as a prognostic indicator for mortality in cardiovascular disease. Most research examining this construct originates from one research group, and it is critical that the predictive value of Type D personality for adverse outcomes is independently cross-validated. This study examined its prognostic value in heart failure, relative to B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and depressive symptoms. Methods: We studied 706 patients with complete BNP, depressive symptom, and Type D personality and mortality data from 958 patients with heart failure enrolled after hospitalization for a multisite study of a disease management program. Multivariable models were adjusted for BNP and depression. Results: At 18 months, there were 192 deaths (27.2%). No evidence was found for a prognostic value of Type D personality in the unadjusted model (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.893, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.582-1.370). In contrast, BNP was significantly predictive of ...
Early exposure to trauma is a known risk factor for personality disorder (PD), but evidence for late-onset personality pathology following trauma in adults is much less clear. We set out to investigate whether exposure to war trauma can lead to lasting personality pathology in adults and to compare the mental health and social functioning of people with late-onset personality problems with those with PD. We recruited patients who scored positively on the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE) in southern Croatia 15 years after the Croatian war of independence and used a semi-structured interview to establish when the persons personality-related problems arose. All participants also completed Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, and measures of mental health and social functioning. Among 182 participants with probable personality disorder, 65 (35.7%) reported that these problems started after exposure to war-trauma as adults. The most prevalent personality problems among those with late-onset

This study investigated relationships between hostility, Zuckermans sensation seeking, and Eysenck and Eysencks personality scales within a prison population, to explore whether they could be conceptualized in terms of two socialized and unsocialized sensation seeking factors. Participants included 79 incarcerated adult male offenders (age range = 18- 62). Findings support the distinction between socialized and unsocialized sensation seeking and suggest that these factors represent more overarching personality factors. Psychoticism was a clear marker of the more broad impulsive, unsocialized sensation seeking factor, rather than representing a supertrait in its own right. This factor was also represented by lie, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility scales. Findings relating to hostility also supported such a reformulation, as unsocialized scales did cluster together to predict the unsocialized hostility factor, whereas unsocialized scales did not. The results demonstrate the need for a ...
There havent been many studies conducted into the intersection of musical preference and personality, as most research in the field has focused on how music (particularly heavy metal and rap) may influence behaviour (see the Heavy Metal and Rap Music pages for more information on this). However, there has been some fascinating research conducted in recent years linking musical tastes to certain personality traits, which Ive summarized below. These are, of course, only tendencies. Although the average fan of a particular genre may be more or less likely to have certain traits, there will always be plenty of individuals who dont fit the prototype.. The Link Between Music Preference and Personality. An ongoing study undertaken by Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University (2008), the largest and most comprehensive of its kind, has generated a number of interesting findings regarding personality traits and musical preferences. The following table indicates which traits have been associated with ...
article{4415776, abstract = {Research on the applicability of the five factor model (FFM) to capture personality pathology coincided with the development of a FFM personality disorder (PD) count technique, which has been validated in adolescent, young, and middle-aged samples. This study extends the literature by validating this technique in an older sample. Five alternative FFM PD counts based upon the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) are computed and evaluated in terms of both convergent and divergent validity with the Assessment of DSM-IV Personality Disorders Questionnaire (shortly ADP-IV; DSM-IV, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth edition). For the best working count for each PD normative data are presented, from which cut-off scores are derived. The validity of these cut-offs and their usefulness as a screening tool is tested against both a categorical (i.e., the DSM-IV - Text Revision), and a dimensional (i.e., the Dimensional Assessment of ...

INTRODUCTION: Research has suggested an association between personality factors and awareness in patients with dementia, yet valid measurement of premorbid personality is problematic. The present study aimed to better reveal the relationship between premorbid personality and awareness by using improved methodology. Moreover, the study aims to contrast the strength of the relationship of premorbid personality and awareness with that of cognitive factors. METHODS: Awareness of illness, symptoms, mnemonic and behavioural impairments, and treatment compliance were measured in 27 patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimers disease (AD) diagnosed by standard criteria for probable AD. Participant premorbid personality was measured using average retrospective Neuroticism-Extroversion-Openness Inventory (NEO-FFI) scores from two informants. Correlations were performed to investigate the relationship between awareness and personality dimensions, as well as measures of cognitive style, neuropsychological function,
Among-individual behavioral differences (i.e. animal personality) are commonly observed across taxa, although the underlying, causal mechanisms of such differences are poorly understood. Animal personality has been correlated with physiological functions as well as fitness-related traits. Variation in many aspects of monoamine systems, such as metabolite levels and gene polymorphisms, has been linked to behavioral variation. Therefore, here we experimentally investigated the potential role of monoamines in explaining individual variation in personality, using two common pharmaceuticals that respectively alter the levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain: fluoxetine and ropinirole. We exposed three-spined sticklebacks, a species that shows animal personality, to either chemical alone or to a combination of the two chemicals, for 18 days. During the experiment, fish were assayed at four time points for the following personality traits: exploration, boldness, aggression and sociability. To ...
[Exploring human personality focused mainly on trait and state markers of behaviour so far. Nevertheless, the concept of the universal, culture-independent model of personality carries more disturbing difficulties: hardly understandable inter-cultural conflicts, culture-related mental disorders and scientific experiences with unexpected outcomes. It can be hypothesized, that beside personality concept represented by the Euro-Atlantic civilisation and mainstream psychology there is an alternative concept of personality. Opposed to the independent, autonomous ego concept of individualistic cultures, collectivistic (primarily far-eastern) cultures are providing an interdependent model. According to this model, the core element of personality are determined rather by social embedding instead of the persons own characteristics, which are secondary to the personal traits and characteristics. This study attempts to briefly outline the concept of interdependent personality, with some illustrative clinical

This is probably why many people are shocked when they come to know that their personality traits are actually symptoms of an anxiety disorder. It isnt that all the personality traits that are connected to the anxiety disorder are bad or negative. For instance, […]

The books introduction provides the theoretical basis for the examination of gendered personalities-masculine and feminine traits-and political attitudes and behavior. It takes the reader through the psychological and political science literature related to this topic, providing a foundation for the books overall theory that gendered personalities affect individuals politics in multiple ways. Masculine personalities are aggressive, individualistic, and dominant, while feminine personalities are warm, compassionate, and gentle. These personalities translate directly into US politics. Among other things, our political parties are gendered in both their issues and images-Democrats are the feminine party and Republicans are the masculine one. This books intuitive argument is that individuals masculine and feminine personality traits should affect their political attitudes and party preferences similarly to the gendered nature of our political world-for example, masculinity should contribute to a
This study systematically reviewed the evidence for personality as a correlate of body image. Electronic databases and reference lists were searched in May 2016 for studies reporting an association between at least one dimension of personality and at least one component of negative body image. Twenty-six studies (33 discrete samples) met inclusion criteria. Sixteen samples were coded as medium-high quality. The results indicated that negative body image was associated with higher levels of Neuroticism and lower levels of Extraversion. Agreeableness was not related to body image, and findings for Conscientiousness and Openness were indeterminate. After taking study quality into account, negative body image was also associated with lower levels of Conscientiousness. Neuroticism was associated with negative body image in both women and men. Sex moderation effects for Extraversion, Openness, and Conscientiousness were indeterminate. Large-sample, prospective studies of personality and body image are

A report in the October issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry suggests that people who are more conscientious are less likely to develop Alzheimers disease. Conscientiousness refers to a persons tendency to control their impulses, be goal-directed and be reliable. Over a 12-year period researchers from Rush University Medical School studied 997 older Catholic nuns, priests and monks none of whom had Alzheimers at the start of the study. Their conscientiousness was assessed by a questionnaire and those who were most conscientous had an 89% lower risk of developing Alzheimers than those who were least conscientious. However, conscientiousness did not affect the tangles and plaques in the brain associated with the condition. The researchers thought that conscientiousness might be linked to educational or occupational success, both of which reduce the incidence of Alzheimers, and that conscientiousness improved peoples resilience and ability to cope with difficulties. Conscientiousness ...

This investigation explored the contribution of extracurricular sport and screen time viewing (television viewing and electronic gaming) to personality trait stability and change during childhood. Two independent samples of 3,956 young children (age 6) and 3,862 older children (age 10) were taken from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. Parent-reported child sport participation, screen time, and personality traits were measured at baseline and again 24 months later. Young children who were more active recorded more of a decrease in introversion, less of a decrease in persistence, and less of an increase in reactivity, than those who were less active. Older children who were more active recorded less of an increase in introversion and more of an increase in persistence than those who were less active. In addition, young children who continued participation in extracurricular sport had greater intra-individual stability of personality for introversion. These finding suggest that an active
Canadian scientists say they have completed a study that links personality, survival and reproductive success in male bighorn sheep.. The researchers, led by University of Quebec at Montreal Professor Denis Reale, said their findings not only advance the knowledge of bighorn sheep, but also offer insight into personality differences in animals and humans from an evolutionary perspective.. Since 1969, several teams of researchers have been studying a population of bighorn sheep in Alberta, Canada. Reale and his colleagues focused on data concerning the animals personality. Initially, the team identified the rams in terms of boldness and docility. They then conducted paternity tests to determine which rams were reproducing.. The study showed, as expected, young males that manage to reproduce are the boldest and most combative. However, in exchange for sexual precocity and risk-taking, the study showed those rams often die younger than their more docile peers. The latter, instead, invest in the ...

A personality disorder is a condition related to an individuals personality. Until recently, an altered or unbalanced personality was not considered a mental health issue or considered treatable. However, personality disorders are now recognised as lying within the spectrum of mental health disorders and are amenable to treatment.
Playback tests were conducted between 09.00 and 15.00. Loudspeakers were placed near the centre of a males home range as determined by the radio-tracking data. Each playback session had two phases: a lure phase and an interactive phase. Songs were broadcast by Yamaha NX-U10 loudspeakers connected to a digital player (Creative Zen), allowing an interactive playback mode by playing songs stored as wav files separately. Songs were broadcast at a sound pressure level of 85 dB SPL at 1 m (Voltcraft digital sound-level meter 322). Each loudspeaker was fixed at a height of 1.5-2 m on the branches of a tree. The lure loudspeaker was placed at 18.4 ± 0.7 m (mean ± s.e.) from the interactive loudspeaker as measured with an infrared device (Leica Rangemaster CRF 800). One loudspeaker was used for the lure playback and the other loudspeaker was used for the interactive playback. We used two loudspeakers to standardize the distance between the subject and the interactive playback speaker. A lure song and ...

Narcissism is one of the concepts that has been always taken interest and still discussed in psychology. It is considered as the plague of the present age by some experts and defined as the selfish personality structure in which people see themselves superior to other people and use others for their own interests. The predominance of this personality trait may pose a risk in some professions. It can be predicted that people with this personality trait will make both themselves and the groups they serve unhappy particularly in occupational groups which do not suitable for selfish personality structure and where individuals are expected to have such characteristics as sacrifice, selfcommitment or empathy. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the relationship between narcissistic personality traits and career choice among university students and to investigate the factors affecting this relationship. The study included a total of 394 students 235 females and 159 males studying in different ...
Previous evidence shows a reliable association between psychosis-prone (especially schizotypal) personality traits and performance on dopamine (DA)-sensitive tasks (e.g., prepulse inhibition and antisaccade). Here, we used blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI and an established procedural learning (PL) task to examine the dopaminergic basis of two aspects of psychosis-proneness (specific schizotypy and general psychoticism). Thirty healthy participants (final N = 26) underwent fMRI during a blocked, periodic sequence-learning task which, in previous studies, has been shown to reveal impaired performance in schizophrenia patients given drugs blocking the DA D2 receptor subtype (DRD2), and to correspond with manipulation of DA activity and elicit fronto-striatal-cerebellar activity in healthy people. Psychosis-proneness was indexed by the Psychoticism (P) scale of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R; 1991) and the Schizotypal Personality Scale (STA; 1984). EPQ-R Extraversion ...
This research aimed to assess the relationships between five personality traits and transformational leadership on adaptive performance among management and professional officers. As Malaysia currently with the 10th Malaysia Plan to achieve Malaysia Vision 2020 as a high income nation with high performance workers through the Government Transformation Program (GTP), Malaysian leaders should be able to change to adapt in new situation in order to have high performance in their job as well as lead their subordinate to have high performance as well. The instruments that employed in this research were International Personality Item Pool (IPIP), Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), as well as adaptive performance (Pulakos et al., 2000). The questionnaires for the three tests have been translated into Malay version in order to measure the five personality traits, transformational leadership, and adaptive performance. The data was collected among the fifty seven management and professional ...
This scale determines varying levels of introversion and extraversion. Along with introversion and extraversion the inventory also measures openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The mini-marker asks participants to rate themselves according to 40 different measures (e.g. creative, extraverted, philosophical, and sloppy) using a Likert scale from 1 to 9, with 1 being extremely inaccurate and 9being extremely accurate. Although the mini-marker is a shortened version (about half the personality measures) of the NEO-5 factor, Saucier (1994) determined that it was representative of the full 100 trait NEO-5 factor inventory. The mini-marker was developed on behalf of many people who appreciated the fact that it was shorter and more efficient; however, Saucier (1994) stresses that because of the smaller version it may create lower reliabilities ...
Rates of depression and anxiety among young people in America have been increasing steadily for the past 50 to 70 years. Today, by at least some estimates, five to eight times as many high school and college students meet the criteria for diagnosis of major depression and/or anxiety disorder as was true half a century or more ago. This increased psychopathology is not the result of changed diagnostic criteria; it holds even when the measures and criteria are constant. article continues after advertisement The most recent evidence for the sharp generational rise in young peoples depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders comes from a just-released study headed by Jean Twenge at San Diego State University.[1] Twenge and her colleagues took advantage of the fact that the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), a questionnaire used to assess a variety of mental disorders, has been given to large samples of college students throughout the United States going as far back as 1938, and ...
Recently, the association between human personality traits and resting-state brain activity has gained interest in neuroimaging studies. However, it remains unclear if Big Five personality traits are represented in frequency bands (~0.25 Hz) of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activity. Based on earlier neurophysiological studies, we investigated the correlation between the five personality traits assessed by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), and the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) at four distinct frequency bands (slow-5 (0.01-0.027 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), slow-3 (0.073-0.198 Hz) and slow-2 (0.198-0.25 Hz)). We enrolled 835 young subjects and calculated the correlations of resting-state fMRI signals using a multiple regression analysis. We found a significant and consistent correlation between fALFF and the personality trait of extraversion at all frequency bands. Furthermore, significant correlations were detected in distinct brain

Objective personality tests, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), might be more sensitive to reflect subclinical personality and be more state-dependent in an individuals lifetime, so they are good scales to predict the psychological distress regarding certain states. The aim of this study was to identify the specific pattern between body mass index (BMI) and psychological distress using the objective personality test. For this study, we investigated BMI and the Korean Military Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MPI). A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 19-yr-old examinees who were admitted to the Military Manpower Administration in Korea from February 2007 to January 2010. Of 1,088,107 examinees, we enrolled 771,408 subjects who were psychologically apparent healthy possible-military-service groups. Afterwards, we reviewed and analyzed directly measured BMI and MPI results. In terms of the validity scales, the faking-good subscale showed an ...

Selfhood, Identity and Personality Styles , 2009 Wiley - Blackwell. Selfhood, Identity and Personality Styles is an interdisciplinary study that describes a new perspective on psychopathology based on the search for the source of personal meaning and identity. The opening section develops a first-person approach to selfhood and personal identity, discussing relevant topics in personality and social psychology, developmental psychology, psychology of emotions and neuroscience. The second part presents five different personality styles distinguished on the basis of their emotional inclinations: Eating Disorder-prone, Obsessive-Compulsive prone, personalities prone to Hypochondria-Hysteria, Phobia-prone and Depression-prone. The classification based on affectivity makes it possible to illustrate the continuity between the study of personality and that of psychopathology. One distinctive feature of this extraordinary book is a discussion of recently published evidence that functional magnetic ...

Personality disorder screens are used in both research and clinical settings to determine whether people have lifelong personality traits that cause persistent or recurrent problems in their personal, social or occupational lives. The Iowa Personality Disorder Screen (IPDS) is an interview of up to 19 questions and covers 11 different symptoms that seem to be at the core of personality disorders. The IPDS takes only five minutes to administer, in marked contrast to much longer, comprehensive interviews that consist of more than 100 questions and take hours to complete.. We hope the screen will allow for more efficient ...
It has been argued that personality, emotions, and psychological problems contribute to or are primary causes of voice disorders, and that voice disorders in turn create psychological problems and personality effects. This article provides an overview of recent concepts in personality and trait structure, briefly summarizes the Trait Theory which explains how personality may contribute to the development of primary muscle tension dysphonia and vocal nodules, reviews research aimed at testing the Trait Theory, and discusses clinical implications related to recognizing personality as a factor in the development, maintenance, and treatment of primary muscle tension dysphonia and vocal nodules.. ...
Currently personality disorders are diagnosed by the recognition of a set of diagnostic criteria. Within both DSM-IV and ICD-10 personality disorders are described as a mixture of both psychological traits and overt behaviours. Each diagnostic system describes the concept of personality disorder upon which subsequent specific diagnoses should be based. DSM-IV describes a personality disorder as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individuals culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment.. The specific personality disorders are then grouped into three clusters based on descriptive similarities. Cluster A disorders are described as odd or eccentric, Cluster B as dramatic, emotional, or erratic, and Cluster C as anxious or fearful. However, this clustering system has been found to have limited validity, although has been ...
INTRODUCTION: Changes in personality have been described in Parkinsons disease (PD), with suggestion that those with established disease tend to be risk averse with a disinclination for addictive behaviour. However, little is known about the earliest and prodromal stages. Personality and its relationship with addictive behaviours can help answer important questions about the mechanisms underlying PD and addiction. METHODS: 941 population-ascertained PD subjects within 3.5 years of diagnosis, 128 patients with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) and 292 control subjects were fully characterised for motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms and across the following 5 personality domains: 1) neuroticism 2) extraversion 3) conscientiousness 4) agreeableness 5) openness using the Big Five Inventory. RESULTS: Patients with early PD were more neurotic (p | 0.001), less extraverted (p | 0.001) and less open than controls (p | 0.001). RBD subjects showed the same pattern of being more neurotic (p | 0.001
This article will address some of the theory and research in personality psychology that are used to answer questions associated with the relation between personality and voice disorders. The study of personality is important to consider in voice disorders, because personality determines the manner in which each person shapes and reacts to his or her environment. In this article, a review of personality psychology is presented along with research findings from voice science and personality. Implications for clinical practice in particular groups of individuals with voice disorders are discussed.. ...
Twenty-seven Parkinsonism patients and 31 controls, matched for age and verbal IQ, were tested on an objectively scored personality test (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) at the beginning of the patients levodopa therapy and three months later. Patients, but not the controls, were retested after 15 months of levodopa treatment. The patients, all of whom were intact intellectually, obtained MMPI scores indicating moderate depression before beginning levodopa treatment. There was no test evidence to indicate that levodopa significantly increased or decreased the amount of depression in the patients after three or 15 months of levodopa. The patient group, however, significantly increased their Index of Psychopathology (Ip) score after 15 months of levodopa but not after three months.. ...
The main finding of this paper is that the temperament trait harm avoidance was positively, and the character trait self-directedness negatively, associated with CRP levels in a population-based cohort of women. In line with this outcome, an inverse correlation between harm avoidance and self-directedness has been observed by others [39], and was confirmed by our data (not shown).. This is the first study examining CRP levels in subjects in which personality traits have been assessed using the TCI. Previous studies regarding personality traits, measured with other instruments, versus CRP levels, also are sparse. Proneness for anger and hostility has however been associated with elevated levels of CRP [4, 40-42]. Also, a study regarding fear for terror attacks revealed, in women but not in men, a positive association between fear and elevated CRP levels after adjustment for generalized anxiety, depressive symptoms and other confounding variables [43].. Although the literature is not unanimous ...

The adaptational-continuum model of personality and coping suggests a useful context for research areas that emphasize both personality and coping. The present paper used Fergusons (2001) model integrating personality and coping factors to further conceptualize findings around celebrity worship. Three hundred and seventy-two respondents completed measures of celebrity worship, personality, coping style, general health, stress, positive and negative affect and life satisfaction. Celebrity worship for intense-personal reasons is associated with poorer mental heath and this relationship can be understood within the dimensions of neuroticism and a coping style that suggests disengagement. Such findings suggest the utility of examining the relationship between celebrity worship and mental health within both personality and coping variables, which have practical implications for understanding and addressing mental health problems that may occur as the result of engaging in celebrity worship for ...

This study evaluated the role HA may play on levels of stress, depression, anxiety, and insomnia among Taiwanese medical students starting their fifth and final year of medical school.Patients
Bipolar disorder usually is diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist and/or a psychologist. In addition to an interview with the child and her parents, several clinical inventories or scales may be used to assess the patients mental status and determine the presence of bipolar symptoms. These include the Childrens Global Assessment Scale (C-GAS), General Behavior Inventory (GBI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Adolescent (MMPI-A), the Youth Inventory (YI-4), and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). The tests are verbal and/or written and are administered in both hospital and outpatient settings. Bipolar symptoms often present differently in children and adolescents. Manic episodes in these age groups are typically characterized by more psychotic features than in adults, which may lead to a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia. Children and adolescents also tend to demonstrate irritability and aggressiveness instead of the elation of mania in adults. ...
Personality Disorders by Clusters A, B, and C. There are four core features that are common to all personality disorders. They are: distorted thinking, problematic emotional response, over-or-under-regubted impulse control, and interpersonal difficulties. In order to be diagnosed with a specific personality disorder, a person must meet the minimum number of criteria established for that disorder. To meet the diagnostic requirements for a psychiatric disorder, the symptoms must cause functional impaiment and/or subjective distress which mean the symptoms are distressing to the person with the disorder and/or the symptoms make it difficult for them to function well in society. Personality disorders can be grouped into three clusters based on similarities within each cluster. These clusters are:. Cluster A (the odd, eccentric cluster);. Cluster B (the dramatic, emotional, erratic cluster); and,. Cluster C (the anxious, fearful cluster). Clutter A includes Paranoid Pe/sona/i/y Disorder, ...

It is rare for borderline personality disorder in the elderly to be diagnosed. Most patients with borderline personality disorder no longer meet diagnostic criteria at age 40. However, treatments for elderly patients with borderline personality disorder do not differ from usual treatments. Object-relations psychotherapy and dialectical behaviour therapy are two treatments that have been found to be effective in treating borderline personality disorder.
It has been widely supported that individual animals express different strategies to cope with environmental challenge. In ectothermic species such as fish, individuals must use behavioral thermoregulation mechanisms to optimize physiological performance. In the present study, thermal preference was tested in groups of wild-type zebrafish, Danio rerio, screened for proactive and reactive animal personalities. Three replicate groups of proactive, reactive, and naive randomly sampled non-screened controls were used for the experiments. The frequency distribution of the animals was recorded in a custom-built multichamber tank under both constant temperature (temperature restricted conditions: TR) and a continuous thermal gradient profile (temperature choice: TCh ranging from 21°C to 35°C). Proactive and reactive animal personalities expressed significantly different thermal preferences and general activity within the temperature gradient. Our results show that proactive fish, generally ...
This work examines the influence of personality factors on willingness to participate in studies. Participants were recruited either via a market research firm or via a face-to-face interception technique. In addition to completing their required tasks, all 256 participants subsequently completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The type distributions from the market research task and the interception task were compared to that of the normative United State National Representative Sample (US NRS). Personality type distributions from the market research recruited participants and the interception recruited participants were found to be significantly different to the US NRS. Further, all over-represented personality types were either Intuitive-Feeling (NF) or Intuitive-Thinking types (NT) and so shared the common trait of
Dependent Personality Disorder does not appear to affect men and women differently, but it is diagnosed in women more than men. Men also are less likely to seek help from a mens treatment center for Dependent Personality Disorder. Some researchers believe that gender bias may account for the disparity in diagnoses and treatment. The idea is that social roles have conditioned men and women to manifest personality traits in different ways. And, society tends to view those manifestations as either feminine or masculine. Thus, while men and women may both exhibit dependent behaviors, women tend to express dependence as submissiveness and neediness. On the other hand, men tend to be more self-effacing and clingy in ways that could be perceived as aggressive, simply because they are male. Studies have shown that doctors may assign personality disorders, where symptoms are typically viewed as socially feminine, to females while overlooking the same symptoms in males. The result is that men generally ...
The present study sought to investigate the impact of psychotherapy integration, incorporating some cognitive-behavioral (CB) techniques with psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) techniques, with the moderating impact of borderline personality pathology on short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy treatment outcomes in a sample of 75 outpatients. PI and CB techniques were assessed using independent videotape ratings of therapy sessions and aspects of the alliance were determined using patient-rated scores. Axis II borderline personality pathology was measured using the Borderline Pathology Index (BPI). Treatment outcomes were measured using patients estimates of their broadband functioning (PEI) and change in global symptom index of the brief symptom inventory (BSI-GSI-RCI). Findings of preliminary analyses were nonsignificant; the direct relationship between patient pretreatment borderline pathology with the flexible integration of CB and PI techniques was not significant. In addition, PI and CB ...
Mood disorders - like depression, anxiety, cyclothymia, obsessive-compulsive, manic-depression, ADD, and bi-polar spectrums - are not the same as personality disorders. While little can be done to fix personality disorders, much can be done to help dissipate and improve those struggling with mood disorders. Mood disorders are most often brain chemistry problems which respond quite well to medication.. Now, it is time for a disclaimer. I am not a counselor, psychologist, medical doctor or psychiatrist. Nevertheless, I speak from a perspective of over 40 years of pastor experience, years of study, and counseling scores of families with one or more members who are dealing with personality disorders. I consider myself a tyro in mental health issues; nevertheless, I hope I can give some helpful insights in these areas.. Let me share a simple description of each of the ten personality disorders. More complete descriptions can, of course, be found easily on the internet for those who are ...

This article examines the possibility that neurotic people exhibit consistent idiosyncracies of cognitive information processing. Specifically, it was hypothesized that if a subject is presented with both negative and positive information which is said to refer to the subjects personality then neurotic people should exhibit a greater than normal tendency to selectively process the self-depreciatory rather than the self-appreciatory information. An experimental investigation with both clinically neurotic and normal samples employed a variety of experimental measures in conjunction with three personality measures (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Repression-Sensitization scale, and Social Self-esteem), and provided evidence for the existence of such an association.
This study investigated the association between a condition of job distress and the presence of self-reported mental health symptoms, in a special police force unit while controlling for sociodemographical, occupational and personality variables. Results from multiple regression analyses showed that sociodemographical and occupational variables accounted for a negligible proportion of variance of mental health problems, although, consistently with a previous study on the same cohort35 higher length of employment, lower rank, being barracked and not having children were significant predictors of higher symptomatology. Emotional stability was a significant predictor for all the measures of mental health problems, which was expected given the large body of research that has shown that this trait is associated with several mental disorders and physical health problems, and that this is not an artefact of the overlapping of some symptoms with questionnaire items.52 Lower levels of agreeableness (eg, ...
Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is a personality disorder which is often characterised by antisocial and impulsive behaviour. APD is generally (if controversially) considered to be the same as, or similar to, the disorder that was previously known as psychopathic or sociopathic personality disorder. Approximately 3% of men and 1% of women have some form of antisocial personality disorder (source: DSM-IV).
Free webinar with Marylene Cloitre, PhD, on May 28th 2021, 7.30-9.00 pm (CEST). The ICD-11 diagnosis of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) indicates the start of a new era in the field of complex trauma. The relevance of discussing C-PTSD in relation to other disorders related to complex trauma, such as borderline personality disorder, is at front. Therefore, ESTD is most delighted and privileged to announce a free online webinar for clinicians (members and non-members) on this topic with the excellent expert, dr. Marylene Cloitre.. Following the inclusion of complex PTSD in the ICD-11 diagnostic classification system and moving from a categorical towards a dimensional view on personality disorders, delineation in clinical practice may be difficult. Many clinicians may ask: what is the difference between C-PTSD and personality disorders? - and, what are the implications for treatment? Dr. Marylene Cloitre will address these questions in this webinar, in addition to presenting the scientific basis for the ...
OBJECTIVES: This research aims to study the relationship between personality traits and periodontal clinical outcomes by taking into account the level of anxiety and depression, periodontal health and oral hygiene behaviour of patients affected with gingivitis or moderate periodontitis requiring periodontal therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The periodontal data of 40 systemically healthy patients affected by gingivitis or moderate periodontitis were collected at baseline and 18 months later. The psychological variables, dental awareness and adherence intent of the patients were assessed through questionnaires, and only those patients that exhibited a higher degree of compliance were included in the study. The personality traits (cluster A: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal; cluster B: borderline, antisocial, narcissistic, and histrionic; cluster C: avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive) and the level of anxiety and depression of the patients were assessed. Patients were instructed with oral ...
Individuals with borderline personality disorder seek psychiatric help and hospitalization at a much higher rate than people with other personality disorders, proba- o bly due to their fear of abandonment and their need to d e seek idealized interpersonal relationships. These patients li represent the highest percentage of diagnosed personali- e ty disorders (up to 60%). e rs. Providing effective therapy for the borderline per- on sonality patient is a necessary, but difficult, challenge. ali The therapist-patient relationship is subject to the same inappropriate and unrealistic demands that borderline is personalities place on all their significant interpersonal rd relationships. They are chronic treatment seekers who r become easily frustrated with their therapist if they feel they are not receiving adequate attention or empathy, and symptomatic anger, impulsivity, and self-destructive behavior can impede the therapist-patient relationship. However, their fear of abandonment, and of ending ...
Many of these personality disorders overlap with each other, and can often be found in conjunction with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, suicidal thoughts, and actual suicides. Most personality disorders are socially environmentally created, except for anti-social disorders, which seems to have a genetic link.. He demonstrated a much higher prevalence of all of these among younger populations, suggesting we could be creating an environment that is fostering and encouraging these traits. Narcissism is especially on the rise. The younger generation today expects to be on TV and be millionaires by age of 30. When they dont accomplish this, it often leads to high anxiety and self-esteem issues.. There are also gender-based distributions to these disorders. The prevalence of narcissism is 62% male and 38% female. But fastest growing group is young women.. Borderline personalities are roughly equal; 47% male 53% female. The emotional cycle of these disorders mirrors domestic ...
Even though many HR professionals say that personality tests can be good predictors for job-related behavior, most organizations are choosing not to use the tests when hiring and promoting employees, according to a recent poll conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).. Approximately 80 percent of the 495 HR professionals surveyed for the poll reported that their organizations did not use personality tests in hiring or job promotions. About 2 percent of the respondents said that they were uncertain if their organizations used the tests.. Nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of poll respondents indicated that personality tests can be useful in predicting job-related behavior and organizational fit.. About 90 of the respondents (18 percent) said that their employers used the tests when hiring or promoting workers. According to these respondents, their organizations used the personality tests most often when hiring or promoting for manager-level positions.. Among poll participants ...
The Congruence Personality Scale Form 1 (CPS-1) is an example of a personality test used to facilitate career decision-making. The CPS-1 assesses how a person prefers to relate to others, how people react to pressure, how dependable they are in performing tasks, how they approach problem solving and how they behave in a group. It is designed to assess the following personality traits:
