The phenotypic structure of personality traits has been well described, but it has not yet been explained causally. Behavior genetic covariance analyses can identify the underlying causes of phenotypic structure; previous behavior genetic research has suggested that the effects from both genetic and nonshared environmental influences mirror the phenotype. However, nonshared environmental effects are usually estimated as a residual term that may also include systematic bias, such as that introduced by implicit personality theory. To reduce that bias, we supplemented data from Canadian and German twin studies with cross-observer correlations on the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. The hypothesized five-factor structure was found in both the phenotypic and genetic/familial covariances. When the residual covariance was decomposed into true nonshared environmental influences and method bias, only the latter showed the five-factor structure. True nonshared environmental influences are not structured ...

This study focused on the 16PF (SA 92), a personality questionnaire that was developed in the USA and adapted for South African conditions. The main aim of the study was to determine whether the scores of the 16PF are comparable in a cross-cultural setting in South Africa. The influence of age, language, socio-economic status and gender on the scores were also determined. The sample consisted of black, white, coloured, and Indian university students and were drawn from the University of Western Cape, University of Pretoria, University of DurbanWestville, and University of Natal. To achieve the aims outlined construct comparability studies and item comparability studies were conducted. In addition, descriptive statistics were also calculated to provide a general picture of the performance of the various sub-samples. A qualitative study was also conducted to determine some of the reasons for the occurrence of item incomparability of the racial sub-sample. The results showed that the racial ...

article{4415776, abstract = {Research on the applicability of the five factor model (FFM) to capture personality pathology coincided with the development of a FFM personality disorder (PD) count technique, which has been validated in adolescent, young, and middle-aged samples. This study extends the literature by validating this technique in an older sample. Five alternative FFM PD counts based upon the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) are computed and evaluated in terms of both convergent and divergent validity with the Assessment of DSM-IV Personality Disorders Questionnaire (shortly ADP-IV; DSM-IV, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth edition). For the best working count for each PD normative data are presented, from which cut-off scores are derived. The validity of these cut-offs and their usefulness as a screening tool is tested against both a categorical (i.e., the DSM-IV - Text Revision), and a dimensional (i.e., the Dimensional Assessment of ...
The Five-Factor Nonverbal Personality Questionnaire assesses respondents for Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience in counseling, research and business settings.
Arousal and effective valence are also important components to motivation. There is a delicate balance between too much, too little, and just the right amount of arousal in a situation, known as the zone of optimal functioning. Too much or too little arousal can negatively impact your performance on a task. Psychological properties of motivation, such as drives, needs, and awareness, play an important role in motivation as well. One important aspect of this section is the need to achieve versus motive to avoid failure. Those who have a high need to achieve engage in task-oriented behaviors while those with a motive to avoid failure are inhibited from attempting achievement tasks. Your personality traits also determine your motivation. The five-factor model of personality has several personality dimensions which as openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These personality dimensions explain why people are motivated by different incentives, situations, and ...
Background: Personality is associated with various health behaviors as it contributes in some way to decisions about lifestyle behaviors, e. g. personality traits (PT) are related to alcohol consumption (AC). Our aim was to evaluate the association between PT and AC. This study is a part of a large-scale validation study of Latvian Clinical Personality Inventory (LCPI-v3). Methods: In total 389 adults (M = 31.80, SD = 13.72 years; 48 % males) filed in demographic questionnaire, indicated information about their alcohol consumption and completed LCPI. Stepwise regression analysis was employed six times (namely, using as predictors (1) domain-level traits (2) facet-level traits first for entire sample, and then for males and females separately). Findings: Stepwise regression analysis revealed that in total 23% of the variance in AC for the entire sample was accounted for two domain-level traits such as Disinhibition and Compulsivity, and 34 % of the variance was accounted for three facet-level ...

Objective Antisocial behavior (ASB) in children and youth is public health problem in Georgia. Nevertheless, there has been no systematic study the risk factors for ASB that could counteract on ASB development. To prevent ASB development and acceleration the understanding of biological (assessment of Brain morphology using MRI) and psychological (assessment using Freiburg Personality Inventory) risk factors is critical. This was the aim of this study. Method The children/youth with ASB tendency (AST) were identified by the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FBI). The biological and psychosocial factors contributing to AST were evaluated using a semi-structured clinical interview. Brain anatomy and morphology was studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results Children/youth with AST had significant abnormalities in most axial elements of the DSM multi-axial system but not in brain anatomy measured by MRI. Conclusion Early identification of ASB tendencies and a provide correlationship between
Potentiation of serotonergic transmission increases cognitive flexibility, but can in other circumstances increase sensitivity to stressful environmental cues. The personality trait Openness to Experience reflects and is also associated with an increased risk for mood disorders. We hypothesized that the personality trait has an association with a biomarker of serotonergic transmission, the plasma membrane serotonin transporter (5-HTT). In 50 healthy volunteers, we tested for correlations between scores on the NEO-PI-R scale Openness to Experience and its subscales, and cerebral binding of the 5-HTT selective PET radioligand [11C]DASB. Subjects were genotyped for the 5-HTT long/short polymorphism, and for a single nucleotide polymorphism in the long allele, designated LA/LG. Midbrain [11C]DASB binding correlated negatively with scores for Openness to Experience and its two subscales, Openness to Actions and Openness to Values. The latter subscore was negatively correlated with [11C]DASB binding in all
Introduction. Personality and motivation In this assignment, I will be talking about the many different theories that attempt to explain where your personality comes from and how it can change you as a person. It will also link this with where motivation comes from. Personality is defined as a persons attributes made up of physical, mental, emotional and social characteristics. Motivation is described as an incentive to complete a task. There are some theories of personality that suggest that you develop your personality from birth, which stay with you through childhood and into adulthood, whereas others say that you develop your personality throughout your life through experiences you encounter. This is known as the nature vs nurture debate. The nature side of this debate argues that you are born with your own unique personality which doesnt change through your life, similar to your genes. One example of this is the trait theory. The trait theory suggests that your personality is made up of a ...

The research examines a cohort of 364 16-17 year old students entering a sixth form college. The focus of the research is an examination of the relationship between academic self-concept, attainment and personality. Issues of gender and ethnicity were also examined. Data was obtained by the use of personality measures, students self-estimates of success, examination results and information obtained from application forms, academic reports and Record of Achievement profiles. The students completed two personality measures on entry. The Student Self-Perception Scale was devised specifically for this research and was piloted on students from two sixth form colleges prior to use with the research sample. The Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale was also used as a validity measure. Basic statistics were obtained using a Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis and a frequency and cross-tabulation programme. A specific residual was generated using multiple linear regression analysis and used ...

The assessment of psychopathy in children and adolescents is a very important area of research and it is still in its infancy. There seems to be reasonable evidence that juvenile psychopathy shows similar correlates (e.g. aggression, neurocognitive deficits, substance misuse) to adult psychopathy. Our knowledge about the nature, stability and consequences of juvenile psychopathy, however, is still very limited. There have been no published longitudinal studies of the stability of psychopathy as assessed by any of the current measures and it remains unclear to what degree the antisocial behavioural items that contribute to the psychopathy label change over time, given what we know about adolescent-limited antisocial behaviours. The limited data on the psychometric properties of current instruments, particularly information on recommended or specific cut-off scores for prototypical psychopathy, suggest that it is premature to assign this label to younger cohorts. For this reason many researchers ...
To do a scale properly, first you need to pick a bunch of questions that address the issue at hand. Then you need to try them out on people. Then you do a factor analysis to see how many different concepts you are measuring, and how they relate to each other. For example, say you are measuring three different personality traits in one questionnaire. Items need to load on only one factor (rather than two or more, or none) - you dont want ambiguous questions, you want questions that separate the wheat from the chaff. Once youve done this, you weed out the bad questions, add some more, retest, reanalyze. Over and over again if need be to get a scale that measures what you want to measure, and not what you dont. Scales that were developed this way: the EPQ-R, various versions of the big five personality inventory, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Scales that were not developed this way: The Hartmann Boundary Questionnaire (Hartmann got as far as the first factor analysis and didnt go any ...

Personality in dogs have been studied relatively extensive the last couple of years with various methods. One of these methods is questionnaire for owners to fill in. A credible and well working questionnaire is characterized by a high reliability and validity. In this study three different questionnaires, MCPQ-R, DPQ and C-BARQ have been used and compared. Dog owners were asked to fill in all three questionnaires for their dog. Correlation between factors in the questionnaires and differences between age groups, breeds and sexes were analyzed to see if these questionnaires differed from each other. The result indicated various correlations that were both expected and unexpected as well as differences between age groups, breeds and sexes. Factors from all three questionnaires were sometimes considered more reliable than the other but DPQ had the most reliable ones. In the comparison between breeds no factor from C-BARQ was significant while several from the DPQ were. These factors also showed a ...
The traditional belief that personalities are set in stone is now under review as a new study shows that small personality changes can occur. Most importantly,
Groups exhibit behavioral consistencies similar to individuals, such as making more or less bold decisions or struggling more or less frequently. However, previous research findings focus only on specific dimensions of groups instead of the general structure of group personality. Based on previous research findings on group and team efficiency, we derived two basic dimensions of group personality, group openness and cohesion, representing the groups outward and inward orientation, respectively. We present the

Rom is a character from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This page summarizes crowd sourced ratings of their personality collected from users of the Statistical Which Character Personality Quiz. People who take the quiz are asked if they would also be willing to volunteer to rate characters that they know. The ratings are made on a 100 point scale between two adjectives and then all averaged together into a composite. Because of the law of large numbers (a.k.a. wisdom of the crowds) this profile is very reliable. If you take one persons opinion of what a character is like and compare it to the opinion of another person about what that character is like, they could be very different. But if you compare the opinions of two groups, the difference gets smaller and smaller the larger the groups.. The table shows the average rating the character received for each trait in the survey. Thus, MFTs theory-free approach results in egregious errors of omission, conflation, and commission. It misses some candidate moral domains, combines others, and includes noncooperative domains. Most egregiously, the lack of theory means that MFT cannot rectify these errors; it cannot make principled predictions about what (other) foundations there might be, thus it cannot make progress toward a cumulative science of morality.. MFT also has empirical problems. The main problem is that MFTs five-factor model of morality has not been well supported by studies using the MFQ. Some of the original studies, as well as replications in Italy, New Zealand, Korea, Sweden, and Turkey, and also a 27 country study using the short-form MFQ, have found that MFTs five-factor model falls short of the conventionally acceptable degree of model fit (CFIs , 0.90). These studies typically find that a two-factor model-Care-Fairness and Loyalty-Authority-Purity-is a better fit. And so despite MFT promising five ...

People tend to unconsciously imitate others prudent, impatient or lazy attitudes, according to a study published in PLOS Computational Biology. Prudence, impatience or laziness are typically thought of as entrenched personality traits that guide how people weigh the cost of risk, delay and effort (respectively). However, new research shows that peoples attitudes towards effort, delay or risk drift towards those of others.
