Vaccination can reduce child mortality significantly and is a cost effective way to improve child health.Worldwide, more than 22 million children do not receive the basic recommended vaccinations.Vaccination coverage in Ethiopia remains low. Research on child health has focused on socio-economic factors such as maternal education and access to health care, but little attention has been given to demographic factors and womens autonomy within the household. The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of demographic factors and womens autonomy on the completion of childhood vaccination in rural Ethiopia.. Methods ...
Ultimately I did, but you know what I talked about the van driving job that I did earlier and through my lates teens and early 20s I wont say I wasted my life but I certainly didnt have any strong sense of motivation about what it was that I wanted to do, I didnt have any ambition. So I worked to earn money. So I worked as a van driver, I worked in a pub, I worked I worked herding cattle in the cattle market, I worked in a circus, I did various clerical and van driving jobs, I did all sorts of different things. But Ill be doing them so that I had enough money to live. So although there were aspects of some of those jobs that I enjoyed genuinely I didnt enjoy them at all and then in my mid 20s I went to university to do a drama degree. Thats when I discovered ambition, thats when I decided I wanted to be an actor and then subsequently a writer, and really ever since then I have to say that Im very happy with my work, you know, sometimes aspects are less exciting. And its interesting that ...
Using basic psychological needs theory (BPNT; Ryan & Deci, 2000) as our guiding framework, we explored cultural differences in the relationships among physical education students perceptions of teacher autonomy support, psychological need satisfaction, subjective vitality and effort in class. Seven hundred and fifteen students (age range from 13 to 15 years) from the U.K. and Hong Kong, China, completed a multisection inventory during a timetabled physical education class. Multilevel analyses revealed that the relationships among autonomy support, subjective vitality and effort were mediated by students perceptions of psychological need satisfaction. The relationship between autonomy support and perceptions of competence was stronger in the Chinese sample, compared with the U.K. sample. In addition, the relationship between perceptions of relatedness and effort was not significant in the Chinese students. The findings generally support the pan-cultural utility of BPNT and imply that a ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - A dynamic approach to communication in health literacy education. AU - Veenker, Herman. AU - Paans, Wolter. PY - 2016/10/21. Y1 - 2016/10/21. N2 - Background: Research within the framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) indicates that patients autonomy is to be considered a critical health care outcome in its own right since it promotes improved mental and physical health. This paper presents an analysis of studies addressing communication and interaction interventions in health literacy curricula for medical and health care practitioners, focusing on patient-oriented skills in making sense and to adapt and self-manage. For evaluating interventions, underlying communication models were traced. The criteria for good practice are making sense and supporting autonomy in making choices. For the search of interventions, keywords from both the framework of the EU-project, Intervention Research on Health Literacy among Ageing population (IROHLA), as well as the SDT (Self ...
Abstract: This is part 4 of 18 in a series of videos from the National Goals in Research, Policy, and Practice meeting. The meeting aimed to advance a research agenda that influences policy and practice for and with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Two individuals share their ideas on what self-advocacy and self-determination means to them and other individuals with I/DD. They talk about the self-advocacy movement, managed care and the medical system, peer-to-peer support, self-advocacy organizations, what they think needs to be done in the future to promote self-determination, and how important it is to teach these skills to individuals with a disability. Run time: 7 minutes 33 seconds. ...
far richer moral texture than that suggested by adversarial procedure 11 The Court s vain attempt to justify the abortion license in terms of an all encompassing right of personal autonomy has begun to infect other areas of the law Thus the autonomy logic of the Court s 1992 Casey decision is now invoked as a warrant for a constitutional right to euthanasia And if it were followed to its conclusion this logic would require us to consider such profound human relationships as the bond between husband and wife or the bond between parents and children to be nothing more than matters of contract with the claims of the autonomous individual trumping all other claims Enshrined by the Court to legalize abortion on demand this autonomy logic threatens to give us an America in which the only actors of consequence are the individual and the state no other community including the community of husband and wife or the community of parents and children will have effective constitutional standing 12 The Supreme ...
Defends a theory of social justice for education from within an egalitarian version of liberalism. The theory involves a strong commitment to educational equality, and to the idea that childrens rights include a right to personal autonomy. The book argues that school reform must always be evaluated from the perspective of social justice and applies the theory, in particular, to school choice proposals. It looks at the parental choice schemes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and in England and Wales, and argues that they fall short of the requirements of justice, but that not all such schemes must do so. It elaborates an abstract voucher scheme that would combine choice with justice, and offers ways by which actual choice‐based reform can be modified to meet the requirements of justice.
Documentary Makes a Strong Stance Against Legalization of Euthanasia in Canada - Through the lives of 5 individuals, this production explores how the legalisation of Euthanasia would affect society, in particular those who are most vulnerable: the disabled, the elderly and those who are chronically ill. Done in association with the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, this powerful documentary looks at the concepts of compassion, dignity, quality of life, personal autonomy and choice, and explores how the law works in shaping a society. The documentary includes Canadian disability rights activist, Catherine Frazee and Palliative Care Nurse Consultant, Jean Echlin, as well as Wesley Smith, attorney for the International Task Force Against Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide and Terri Schiavos brother, Bobby Schindler.
Decision-making is considered a fundamental aspect of personal autonomy and can be affected in psychiatric and neurologic diseases. It has been shown that cognitive deficits in dementia impact negatively on decision-making. Moreover, studies highlighted impaired clinical competence in neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In this context, the current study explored the relationship between behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and clinical competence, especially the capacity to consent to treatment, in Alzheimers Disease (AD). Seventy-one patients with mild to moderate AD participated, completing assessments for capacity to consent to treatment, general cognition and neuropsychiatric disturbances. For each neuropsychiatric symptom, patients with and without the particular disturbance were compared on the different subscales of the MacArthur Competence Tool for Treatment (Understanding, Appreciation, Reasoning and Expression). The results showed that
The word autonomy comes from the Greek autos-nomos meaning self-rule or self-determination. According to Kantian ethics, autonomy is based on the human capacity to direct ones life according to rational principles. He states, Everything in nature works in accordance with laws. Only a rational being has the capacity to act in accordance with the representation of laws, that is, in accordance with principles, or has a will. Since reason is required for the derivation of actions from laws, the will is nothing other than practical reason. (In Korsgaard, 2004). Rationality, in Kants view, is the means to autonomy. Autonomous people are considered as being ends in themselves in that they have the capacity to determine their own destiny, and as such must be respected. For John Stuart Mill, the concept of respect for autonomy involves the capacity to think, decide and act on the basis of such thought and decision freely and independently. Mill advocated the principle of autonomy (or the ...
Ron Paul is great, I hope we can pull-off a victory. In this day and age I cannot figure why Paul is the only candidate of his type. It seems such a no-brainer that personal autonomy is the only just and fair system of government. If I were a politician I cannot see taking any other stance. Ron Paul is like garlic to a vampire; those who hate him are out to suck us dry, the haters of freedom and liberty ...

Today, we interview Olga Martínez expert at the Catalan Arthroplasty Register (RACat) and Xavier Mora, specialist in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery with a Master in biomaterials. They are two professionals involved in arthroplasties, a subject of great impact among a large sector of the population. We focus on aspects of recommendation and prognosis related to the pathology and on the value of registries for quality care.. In what cases is an arthroplasty intervention recommended?. Xavier: The most important surgical indication to carry out a knee or hip arthroplasty is arthrosis. Advanced arthrosis has a considerable social impact with a loss of life quality for the person affected due to pain, a loss of personal autonomy and an increase in dependency. In addition, the loss or reduction in mobility can worsen existing diseases such as diabetes or heart diseases. It is in these situations when an arthroplasty is recommended which will reduce pain and improve joint mobility.. Olga: In our ...
Purpose: Traditional approaches to improving preventive care have had limited success. In response, researchers have adopted new ways of examining the primary care environment and clinical encounters to better understand the factors that impact care delivery. We examined how clinicians make preventive counseling decisions to ascertain if self-determination theory (SDT) may further clarify influences on clinicians decisions to take time for preventive counseling.. Methods: We studied clinical decision making through a mixed-method approach using obesity counseling as an example of preventive counseling. We conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with 30 primary care clinicians in RIOS Net, a Southwestern US practice-based research network and distributed a survey, which was completed by 75% of 195 network members. We then used the components of SDT autonomy, competence, and relatedness to organize the factors that clinicians identified as most influential in their preventive counseling ...
This book describes the encounter between the common law legal system and the tribal peoples of North America and Australasia. It is a history of the role of anglophone law in managing relations between the British settlers and indigenous peoples. That history runs from the plantation of Ireland and settlement of the New World to the end of the 20th century. The book begins by looking at the nature of British imperialism and the position of non-Christian peoples at large in the 17th and 18th centuries. It then focuses on North America and Australasia from their early national periods in the 19th century to the modern era. The historical basis of relations is described through the key, enduring, but constantly shifting questions of sovereignty, status and, more latterly, self-determination. Throughout the history of engagement with common law legalism, questions surrounding the settler-states recognition - or otherwise - of the integrity of the tribe have recurred. These issues were addressed in many
Delegates called upon administering Powers today to take the necessary steps to attain the rapid decolonization of the 17 remaining Non-Self-Governing Territories, as the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) began its general debate on that topic.. El Salvadors representative, speaking on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), expressed solidarity with the Non‑Self‑Governing Territories of that region that recently suffered the effects of natural disasters. The small island Territories of the Caribbean and the Pacific constitute the majority of such Territories, he noted, calling for the sustained and balanced growth of their fragile economies. He added that the administering Powers should not thwart their efforts towards self-determination. CELAC also called for the resumption of negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom for a peaceful solution to the dispute over the Malvinas* Islands, he said.. Agreeing, Brazils ...

The first aim of this work was to examine the independent influence of students perceived autonomy support for leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), from different school community agents, on motivational outcomes in a LTPA context and objective PA levels. Using both a variable- and person-centered approach, the second aim was to examine how different combinations of autonomy-support were associated with students motivational outcomes in a LTPA context and PA levels. A sample of 178 secondary students (M = 13.26 ± 0.64) participated in the study. Autonomy support for LTPA from the PE teacher, mother, father, and peers were the only agents that significantly and positively predicted motivational outcomes in a LTPA context and PA levels. While the two- and three-way interactions of some of these four significant sources significantly increased the explained variance of some motivational outcomes, the plots revealed that the lowest values of motivational outcomes were associated with low values of
This is a question healthcare professionals have to answer almost every day. As they work with patients and families who are making healthcare decisions, the goal is to move care in the right direction. How much control should patients have over their healthcare choices? Isnt the answer obvious? The most intuitive answer would be as much control as possible. Why would a patient not want to have control over his or her healthcare decisions? When might a patient not be able to fully control their care choices?. The ethical principle of autonomy, which has many definitions, is highly valued in personal healthcare decision-making. Autonomy should be considered when it has features which relate to people, self determination or self governance, all of which are relevant to making healthcare decisions.. Two concepts will assist in answering our question. First, to be autonomous (literally a self-lawmaker), an individual must have adequate knowledge to explore and examine all options relevant to the ...
This book proposes a comprehensible, context-sensitive and flexible framework for the development of pedagogy for autonomy in language education. The «framework» metaphor highlights the effort to identify structuring elements in the authors stance towards pedagogy for autonomy, which fall into three domains -the context, the learner, and the teacher. In each domain, the authors raise ethical, conceptual and practical issues that are crucial to their perspective and offer a basis for reflection on learner and teacher development towards learner and teacher autonomy. The book proposes a common definition for learner and teacher autonomy within a vision of education as transformation and empowerment. Pedagogy for autonomy is operationalized through a set of ten general principles.. ...
Your text also refers to the principle of self-determination. As a consequence of British expulsion of the Argentine population and administration in 1833, less than 1% of the population in the islands today is Argentine. This demographic reality directly reflects British Government policy and practise. Applying the principle of self-determination to the current population of the islands serves British state power well, not justice. By moulding the self whose self-determination is referred to in the text, British government use of the principle effectively decapitates a long-standing and widely held sense of unfairness in the Argentine population of almost 40 million. Maria Victoria Perotti, International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO). Oslo ...
I advocate consensual prosthetic self-determination myself, after all, so I cant say I disapprove of folks seeking to change themselves, either, so long as they arent under duress or unduly misinformed about risks and costs and benefits and so on. I take consensual prosthetic self-determination to be the usual Pro-Choice politics, simply elaborated to include both the right of all women to end their unwanted pregnancies safely as well as to facilitate wanted ones through assistive reproductive techniques, but also elaborated further to include a host of familiar civil libertarian positions on biomedical and lifeway issues concerning the self-determination of end-of-life conditions, informed consensual comparatively harmless recreational drug use, consensual body modification (cosmetic procedures, sexual reassignments, body modifications like tattoos and piercings and so on), and elaborated further still in the context of actually emerging genetic, prosthetic, and cognitive interventions to ...

Is the Mundell-Fleming trilemma alive and well? International co-movement of asset prices takes place alongside synchronized business cycles, complicating the identification of financial spillovers and assessments of monetary policy autonomy. A benchmark for interest rate comovement is to impose the null hypothesis that central banks respond only to the outlook for domestic inflation and output. We show that common approaches used to estimate interest rate spillovers tend to understate the degree of monetary autonomy enjoyed by small open economies with flexible exchange rates. We propose an empirical strategy that partials out those spillovers that are associated with impaired monetary autonomy. Using this approach, we revisit the predictions of the trilemma and find more compelling evidence that flexible exchange rates deliver monetary autonomy than prior work has suggested.
By: Rep. Edcel C. Lagman, 30 September 2020). Mr. Speaker and Distinguished Sponsor: The Constitution grants fiscal autonomy to the Judiciary as well as to the Office of the Ombudsman, the constitutional bodies like the Commission on Audit, Civil Service Commission and Commission on Elections, and also to the Commission on Human Rights, in order to respect and protect their independence from the interference and control of partisan politics, particularly from the Legislature and the Executive.. Unfortunately, their enjoyment of fiscal autonomy is unequal because only the Appropriations for the Judiciary may not be reduced by the legislature below the amount appropriated for the previous year. (Sec. 3 of Art. VIII of the Constitution).. There must be parity in the enjoyment of fiscal autonomy by the Judiciary and the other independent offices like that of the Office of the Ombudsman.. The Congress is not prohibited from adopting a policy of equal fiscal autonomy in favor of the other offices ...

ABSTRACT: One of the most challenging scenarios in obstetric care occurs when a pregnant patient refuses recommended medical treatment that aims to support her well-being, her fetuss well-being, or both. In such circumstances, the obstetrician-gynecologists ethical obligation to safeguard the pregnant womans autonomy may conflict with the ethical desire to optimize the health of the fetus. Forced compliance-the alternative to respecting a patients refusal of treatment-raises profoundly important issues about patient rights, respect for autonomy, violations of bodily integrity, power diffe... ...
This study investigated perceived coercion among patients with SUD that were admitted either involuntarily or voluntarily to receive inpatient hospital treatment. The VA group showed significantly higher scores than the IA group on the internal sources of perceived coercion (Self subscale). No individual characteristics or independent variables were identified that affected perceived coercion in any clinically significant magnitude. Despite the different legal statuses of these groups upon admission to the hospital, the IA group did not report more perceived coercion, overall.. Many clinicians are reluctant to invoke coerced SUD treatment. For some, concern about patient autonomy is the primary deterrence to using coercive treatment, even when the individuals autonomy is clearly compromised by the cognitive and neurobiological effects of alcohol or substance abuse [23]. In modern bioethics, autonomy is considered one of the overarching ethical principles for protecting patients liberties and ...
Dr. Lauren A. Plante, a US obstetrician, has written a wonderful article (a MUST read!) in response to the increasing industrialization of childbirth (cesarean section). Dr. Plante asserts that on-demand cesareans do not represent the height of womens autonomy, but are, in fact, the opposite. She calls for true autonomy for women - the right to choose from a spectrum of choices ...

Because continuing to determine Indian membership by racial criteria, such as blood quantum or Indian descent, would leave the government in a constitutionally indefensible position, it has attempted to change how its statutes and regulations provide for the distribution of benefits to Indians. Native American concerns over equal protection and tribal sovereignty have led the federal government to reduce its role as arbiter of race-based eligibility standards. This policy of allowing tribes self-determination on membership, as well as other aspects of their lives, has developed since the Nixon administration in the 1970s.[14] Nixon said the goal should be to strengthen the Indians sense of autonomy without threatening his sense of community. And we must make it clear that Indians can become independent of Federal control without being cut off from Federal concern and Federal support.. The pivotal legislation of the era was the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975. ...
I imagine a city where all women and girls are safe, confident, respected at home, on the street, at work, at school. But it is not always the city I see.. I work at The Redwood, where we provide safe haven and support for women and children fleeing many forms of violence. Women speak of death threats and rape by their partners, of being beaten up by neighbourhood bullies because they are not the right kind of woman, of sexual harassment by employers and landlords, of terror at the possibility of being deported because they fled abuse by their sponsors, of returning to abusive partners because their jobs or disability support do not pay enough, they cant access childcare….. There are many more stories. We listen to each one, offer counselling, a way of framing the experiences, share options and advocate with each woman for the resources she needs to live free from violence. I am inspired by the courage and resilience of women rebuilding their lives and by the many caring individuals in this ...
Community Living and Participation for People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is an exploration of how to create the ideal conditions to facilitate community living and participation for people with IDD. The book addresses the complex and ever-evolving dimensions related to both the place of community and the feeling of community, including living arrangements, work, other daytime activities, financial resources, relationships, personal interests, health and well-being, faith, opportunities for learning and personal growth, self-determination and informed decision making, and rights and responsibilities as a citizen. The following topics are addressed specifically: using person-centered and positive support practices, housing, employment, social inclusion and relationships, self-determination and self-advocacy, supported decision making, health and wellness, planning for healthy and engaged aging, practices that promote quality outcomes, and the direct support workforce.. Each ...
The concept of freedom is a common topic of passionate debate in many circles. It is explicitly written in Federal and State law, and often seeps into individual family politics. There is one specific kind of agency that, it seems to me, is akin to our common interpretation of freedom, and it perhaps holds an even stronger relevance to debates of human rights regarding personal expression. Autonomy is the ability to act freely without the presence of (unjustified) moral coercive entities (EXAMPLES necessary here). Community recognition is a necessary element to legitimize ones expression. While the concept of freedom requires the ability to act without physical restraint, autonomy demands the ability to act without coercive moral influences. So while an obstruction of freedom is physical, an obstruction of autonomy is a social restraint of ones most basic internal thoughts or external expressions on a moral level. In a specific instance when we might legally have the freedom to express ...
1) The determination of scientifically predicated, evidence-based practice parameters is based on the published work of Drs Ian Chalmers and Murry Enkins, the bible of evidenced-based maternity care entitled A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth (GEC). It is a compilation of all pregnancy and childbirth related studies published in the English language in the last 30 years. The Guide to Effective Care identifies six levels effectiveness/efficacy, ranging from the positive end of clearly beneficial (category 1) to the negative end (category 6) of likely to be ineffective or harmful . Using the preponderance of available evidence, Drs Chalmers and Enkins rated each standard maternity-care practice and regularly used medical/ surgical interventions for safety and efficacy. Based on these categories, the G E C cautions that:. Practices that limit a womans autonomy, freedom of choice and access to her baby should be used only if there is clear evidence that they do more good than ...
Turkey has repeatedly warned it will not tolerate Kurdish self-rule on its Syrian frontier. Washington has also opposed Kurdish autonomy, for fear it would divide the Syrian opposition and because of the Yips links with the PKK. World Bulletin / News Desk. Kurds are celebrating after flushing ISIL militants out of the town of Kobani, but victory is not yet certain in their campaign to cement hard-won autonomy in northern Syria.. Hundreds of U.S.-led coalition air strikes have devastated the town, which is adrift in an ISIL-controlled sea. Objections to autonomy from neighbouring Turkey and the United States could also make it hard for them to sustain their gains.. The retaking by Peoples Protection Units (TPG) last week of predominantly Kurdish Koran Province after a four-month siege by ISIL was a major defeat for the group that controls a 20,000-square mile arc of Syria and Iraq.. For the Kurd, it is a bittersweet victory, as some 200,000 people, almost the entire population of Koran ...
The climate for autonomy in four urban proprietary nursing homes was investigated as part of a larger study of the relationship between perceived control and morale. Data from 113 residents, 137 caregivers, and 10 administrative personnel revealed that caregivers see themselves as the predominant decision makers. Although they prefer a slightly higher level of self-determination for residents, only in one-to-one and solitary activities do they prefer giving residents the primary decision making role, possibly because they see most residents as not capable of making decisions. Residents saw themselves as having more control than did staff. Grooming and eating were identified by both groups as areas where residents had the least control. A substantial proportion of caregivers and administrative staff did not emphasize the availability of options to residents. ...

YEREVAN (Armenpress)-On September 21-the Committee of Ministers Deputies of the Council of Europe unanimously accepted a document where it clearly defines the principle of self-determination as an international legal norm which is applied equally and unreservedly with the Helsinki Final Act principles-according to the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release from Monday.. The document was adopted in response to a question by Mrs. Hajiyeva-an Azerbaijani member of PACE-to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe-where she demanded that the Committee obligate Armenias acceptance of Azerbaijans territorial integrity. With this document-the Council of Europe Ministers Deputies not only did not accept Azerbaijans request-but reaffirmed the equality-in international law-of the peoples right to self-determination and the right of states to territorial integrity.. Addressing the crowd at Place Émilie-Gamelin before the march began, Action Santé Travesti(e)s et Transsexuel(le)s du Québec (ASTTeQ) outreach worker Betty Iglesias spoke to the particular challenges faced by trans* migrants without citizenship.. I want to ask you to hear the voice of migrants and refugees who are now under double oppression because of their legal name and because of their identity, Iglesias said in French. Having citizenship is necessary to […] be recognized as a person eligible to make a demand [to change ones name and gender marker].. Speaking to The Daily, Rose highlighted the difficulties that trans* people face in their interactions with the medical community.. To get hormones, we have to go see therapists, doctors, endocrinologists, and most of them are transphobic, and its really easy to be rejected by the doctors because they are not aware of what being transgender is, said Rose. To get surgery, to get hormones, and to get our names changed, we have to go ...
At times, support from capital-friendly politicians contained and defanged the revolutionary potential inherent in the restoration of indigenous lands and sovereignties. In some instances, capital interests used self-determination as a facade to restructure tribes as junior corporate partners in the global political economy. This occurred at times with Indian gaming, Alaska Native Corporations, corporate iwi that manage Treaty of Waitangi settlement money in New Zealand, the Indigenous Land Corporation in Australia, and First Nations natural resource corporations in Canada.. More often, however, indigenous people have coopted conservative forces as agents of an indigenous agenda. Across the world, while other Left and progressive movements gained little and often lost ground, indigenous people moved debate and policy in directions favorable to their interests.. Self-determination is now the established framework for indigenous policy in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa/New ...

Since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, indigenous sovereignty has gained a wider understanding among progressives and activists across Turtle Island (North America), and in particular in Canada. Many writers and activists have offered insight and support into ongoing struggles over sovereignty for the Shuswap Nations Secwepemc people at what is commonly referred to as Sun Peaks near Kamloops, British Columbia. Also, near Montreal Quebec, the Mohawk Nations Kanehsatake community continues to be under siege from the Federal government, police and federally appointed chiefs .
