CONTEXT: Recently, a quantitative trait locus for stature was reported on chromosome 3p26 in patients with type 2 diabetes. OBJECTIVE: Given that ghrelin is a peptide involved in GH release and located on 3p26, we hypothesized that variation within its gene (GHRL) may be responsible for the quantitative trait locus on 3p26. DESIGN: The evidence for linkage around GHRL was refined with the genotyping of an additional four microsatellites (D3S4545, D3S1537, D3S1597, and D3S3611), giving a total of 27 markers, followed by multipoint variance components linkage analysis. Probands from the linkage families were typed for five common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within GHRL and tested for association with adult stature using haplotype trend regression. RESULTS: The maximum multipoint evidence for linkage between adult stature and the 27 microsatellites yielded an LOD score of 2.58 (P = 0.0003) between D3S1297 and D3S1304. Five common (frequency of | or =5%) SNPs were typed in the probands [two

Over a third of people with HIV have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the absence of hepatitis B or C, according to the results of a meta-analysis and systematic review published in AIDS. Metabolic disorders including high body mass index (BMI), diabetes and elevated lipids were key risk factors. The study also revealed high prevalences of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis, possible outcomes of NAFLD, with metabolic disorders once again shown as the most important factors.. "NAFLD is common in HIV-monoinfected patients. Metabolic disorders are key risk factors for NAFLD independent of HIV parameters and predict its complications," comment the authors. "Our systematic review underlines the need for additional data on NAFLD in HIV infection as well as a better standardised assessment and management of the disease.". Liver disease is now a leading cause of serious illness and death in people with HIV. Until now, much of the liver disease occurring in people living ...

The feasibility of solely using a campaign intervention (CI) to promote healthy eating and physical activity behaviors for weight loss and weight maintenance has not been examined in a systematic manner. Thus, the primary aim of this study will be to examine whether a stand-alone CI results in similar weight loss compared to a standard behavioral weight loss intervention (SBWL). It is hypothesized that the CI will achieve a similar weight loss when compared to the SBWL. Additional aims include the examination of the CI on changes in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity, dietary intake, self-monitoring of dietary intake and physical activity, weight loss self-efficacy, and motivation compared to a SBWL. This study will recruit forty-eight sedentary, overweight and obese adult men and women, to participate in a behavioral weight loss intervention at the University of Pittsburgh Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center (PAWMRC). To be considered eligible for this study, ...

The roles of different dietary proteins in the aetiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain unclear. We investigated the associations of dietary proteins with the risk of incident T2D in Finnish men from the prospective Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. The study included 2332 men aged 42-60 years at the baseline examinations in 1984-1989. Protein intakes were calculated from 4-d dietary records. Incident T2D was determined by self-administered questionnaires, fasting blood glucose measurements, 2-h oral glucose tolerance tests, and with national registers. The multivariable-adjusted risk of T2D on the basis of protein intakes was compared by the Cox proportional hazard ratios (HR). During the mean follow-up of 19·3 years, 432 incident T2D cases were identified. Total, animal, meat or dairy product protein intakes were not associated with risk of T2D when the potential confounders were accounted for. Plant (multivariable-adjusted extreme-quartile HR 0·65; 95 % CI 0·42, 1·00; P ...
We performed Mendelian randomization analyses of body mass index and waist-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index in Dupuytren's disease using summary statistics from genome-wide association study meta-analyses. We found that adiposity is causally protective against Dupuytren's disease, with the inverse-variance weighted Mendelian randomization analysis estimating that a 1 standard deviation increase in body mass index (equivalent to 4.8 kg/m2) leads to 28% (95% confidence interval: 18-37%) lower relative odds of developing Dupuytren's disease, and a 1 standard deviation increase in waist-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (equivalent to a waist-hip ratio of 0.09) leads to 26% (95% confidence interval: 6-42%) lower relative odds of developing Dupuytren's disease. We conclude from this study that regardless of the well-established negative health effects of obesity, the raised body mass index is associated with a lower risk of Dupuytren's disease and may be causally protective for the development of

3 Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA. Whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, hematocrit, and fibrinogen are considered independent risk factors for coronary heart disease and can be elevated by dehydration. The associations between fatal coronary heart disease and intake of water and fluids other than water were examined among the 8,280 male and 12,017 female participants aged 38-100 years who were without heart disease, stroke, or diabetes at baseline in 1976 in the Adventist Health Study, a prospective cohort study. A total of 246 fatal coronary heart disease events occurred during the 6-year follow-up. High daily intakes of water (five or more glasses) compared with low (two or fewer glasses) were associated with a relative risk in men of 0.46 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.28, 0.75; p trend = 0.001) and, in women, of 0.59 (95% CI: 0.36, 0.97). A high versus low intake of fluids other than water was associated with a relative risk of ...

We sought to investigate the thickness of plantar fascia, measured by means of ultrasonographic evaluation in healthy, asymptomatic subjects, and its relationship to body mass index, ankle joint dorsiflexion range of motion, and foot pronation in static stance. One hundred two feet of 51 healthy volunteers were examined. Sonographic evaluation with a 10-MHz linear array transducer was performed 1 and 2 cm distal to its insertion. Physical examination was also performed to assess body mass index, ankle joint dorsiflexion, and degree of foot pronation in static stance. Both examinations were performed in a blinded manner. Body mass index showed moderate correlation with plantar fascia thickness at the 1- and 2-cm locations. Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion showed no correlation at either location. Foot pronation showed an inverse correlation with plantar fascia thickness at the 2-cm location and no correlation at the 1-cm location. In conclusion, body mass index and foot supination at the ...
Background: Sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages (called soft drinks) and juices, which have a high glycemic load relative to other foods and beverages, have been hypothesized as pancreatic cancer risk factors. However, data thus far are scarce, especially from non-European descent populations. We investigated whether higher consumption of soft drinks and juice increases the risk of pancreatic cancer in Chinese men and women.. Methods: A prospective cohort analysis was done to examine the association between soft drink and juice consumption and the risk of pancreatic cancer in 60,524 participants of the Singapore Chinese Health Study with up to 14 years of follow-up. Information on consumption of soft drinks, juice, and other dietary items, as well as lifestyle and environmental exposures, was collected through in-person interviews at recruitment. Pancreatic cancer cases and deaths were ascertained by record linkage of the cohort database with records of population-based Singapore Cancer ...

Methods: We studied a consecutive sample of 150 patients undergoing coronary angiography for the evaluation of chest pain. Metabolic ...
Americans love food that tastes good and we find that food and drink companies are adding high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener to enhance flavors. Why are companies choosing this over other sweeteners? Is there a difference between corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup? Why is it that some brands use high-fructose corn syrup for the U.S. market, yet sugar for Canadian and European markets?. The simple answer as to why high-fructose corn syrup is used is cost. It is a lot cheaper for food manufactures to use high-fructose corn syrup than real sugar. Also the supply of high-fructose corn syrup is almost limitless. Corn subsidies by the government can be the reason for both cost and supply.. Corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup are two different products even though both products are made from corn starch. Regular corn syrup is 100% glucose yet high-fructose corn syrup has some of its glucose converted to fructose enzymatically. Scientists are examining the potentially negative effects of ...

Both sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake and body mass index (BMI) are associated with elevated serum urate concentrations and gout risk. The aim of this study was to determine whether the associations of SSB intake with serum urate and gout are moderated by BMI. The effects of chronic SSB intake on serum urate and gout status were analysed in a large cross-sectional population study. The effects of an acute fructose load on serum urate and fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) were examined over 180 minutes in a short-term intervention study. In all analyses, the responses were compared in those with BMI |25 mg/kg2 (low BMI) and ≥25 mg/kg2 (high BMI). In the serum urate analysis (n = 12,870), chronic SSB intake was associated with increased serum urate in the high BMI group, but not in the low BMI group (P difference = 3.6 × 10−3). In the gout analysis (n = 2578), chronic high SSB intake was associated with gout in the high BMI group, but not in the low BMI group (P

Overall weight loss in the behavioral weight loss intervention was similar across the diet groups, although women who were insulin sensitive lost more weight with a lower fat diet than a lower carbohydrate diet. Weight loss was generally associated with an improvement in the lipid profile, but there were differences depending on insulin resistance status and diet composition. The walnut‐rich diet resulted in the most favorable changes in lipid levels while promoting a degree of weight loss that was comparable to the lower fat diet.. Differential weight loss in response to diet composition in relation to insulin resistance status has been observed in 2 previous studies.10,19 In those studies, insulin sensitivity was associated with more weight loss in response to a lower fat (versus lower carbohydrate) diet, and insulin resistance was associated with more weight loss in response to a lower carbohydrate (versus lower fat) diet. We observed differential weight loss in the insulin‐sensitive but ...
Purpose: Our previous study showed no correlation between -202 A/C IGFBP-3 promoter polymorphism and Δheight SDS in children with growth hormone deficiency. We investigated the influences of the -202 IGFBP-3 polymorphism on 1-year follow-up outcomes of GH treatment in Korean children with ISS.. Methods: Data was obtained from 81 children with idiopathic short stature (peak serum growth hormone (GH) ≥ 7.0 ng/mL by GH stimulation test with 2 different stimulants). They were treated with GH for at least 1 year between 2014 and 2016. 69 of them were analyzed polymorphism of -202 IGFBP-3 promoter region (A or C). Their height velocity during GH treatment, serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) concentrations before and after GH treatment, respectively. Children with chronic disease, known syndromic disease and small for gestational age (SGA).. Results: Distribution of the -202 IGFBP-3 genotypes was as follows: AA genotype 69.6%; AC ...

N2 - Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder characterized by extremely high cholesterol level, accelerated atherosclerosis and premature cardiovascular disease. We need an early risk stratification method for this population. Arisk score formula to estimate the probability of advanced atherosclerosis using coronary heart disease risk factors was developed for persons 15-34 years of age by the Pathobiological Determinants of Atherosclerosis in Youth (PDAY) study. This study's aim was to investigate the relation between PDAY risk score and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and inflammation markers in asymptomatic young FH subjects. Methods: We included 23 ...
Stroke is a major risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. No study has evaluated the association between diuretic use and risk of vertebral fracture in stroke patients, although a considerable proportion of stroke patients are prescribed diuretics for hypertension. Our study aimed to investigate whether treatment with thiazides or loop diuretics affects the risk of vertebral fracture after stroke. A population-based propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with a new diagnosis of stroke between 2000 and 2011 were included. After propensity score matching, 9468 patients were included in the analysis of the effect of thiazides, of who 4734 received thiazides within 2 years after stroke. To analyze the loop diuretic effect, 4728 patients were included, of who 2364 received loop diuretics. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) of vertebral fractures among

N2 - Complement plays important roles in host immune defences, and recent studies suggest that adipose tissue is an important site of production for some complement proteins. Starvation has been associated with low complement levels, but studied populations have usually had concomitant opportunistic infections or other conditions which might affect complement levels. To determine the impact of body weight and changes in body weight on serum complement, we investigated levels of complement proteins in otherwise healthy patients with a wide range of body weights, including patients with anorexia nervosa before and after treatment, obese dieters before and after weight loss, and normal weight ...

BACKGROUND: PATRO Children is an ongoing observational, longitudinal, non-interventional, global post-marketing surveillance study, which is investigating the long-term safety and effectiveness of Omnitrope®, a somatropin biosimilar to Genotropin®, in children with growth disturbances. The primary endpoint of PATRO Children is long-term safety and the secondary endpoint is effectiveness, which is assessed by analysing auxological data such as height (HSDS) and height velocity (HVSDS) standard deviation scores. Here, we report the data from the Italian interim analysis of PATRO Children data up to August 2015. METHODS: PATRO Children is enrolling children who are diagnosed with conditions of short stature requiring GH treatment and are receiving Omnitrope®. Adverse events (AEs) are assessed in all Omnitrope®-treated patients. Height is evaluated yearly to near-adult (final) height, and is herein reported as HSDS; height velocity is also assessed and reported as a standard deviation score ...

METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the scan results of patients who had undergone orbital computed tomography scans between November 2010 and November 2011. We assessed the scan results of 184 orbits in 92 adults who had no pathology of the orbit. The individuals were classified into 3 groups with respect to age. Orbital volume, effective orbital volume (defined as the difference between orbital and eyeball volume), extraocular muscle volume, ...
Body mass index (BMI) and skeletal age (SA) are important indicators of individual growth and maturation. Although the results have not been unified, most studies indicated that accelerated skeletal maturation is associated with overweight/obesity. However, there have so far been insufficient studies about the association between accelerated skeletal maturation and overweight/obesity in preschoolers, particularly Asian children. A cross-sectional study was conducted on Chinese children to verify the association between accelerated skeletal maturation and overweight/obesity at preschool age. The study involved 1330 participants aged 3.1-6.6 years old (730 males and 600 females) in Shanghai, China. The skeletal age was determined according to the method of TW3-C RUS. Accelerated skeletal maturation was defined as relative SA (SA minus chronological age [CA]) ≥1.0 years. BMI was classified as thinness, normal weight, overweight, and obesity according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) BMI cut

BackgroundThe association between physical fitness performance tests and anthropometric indices is not clear. The study aims to explore the association between physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices in Taiwanese community-dwelling adults. This may help in monitoring anthropometric indices to improve physical fitness.MethodsWe recruited 2216 participants aged 23-64 years between 2014 and 2017. Physical fitness performance, including abdominal muscular endurance (60-s sit-up test), flexibility (sit-and-reach test), and cardiorespiratory endurance (3-min step test), was evaluated in all participants. The association of the physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), was analyzed using linear regression, with adjustments for age and gender.ResultsBody mass index was negatively associated with abdominal muscular endurance (p p 2.
