11-year old Persia is an energetic, caring, loyal and happy young girl who has grown up alongside the animals on the Serengeti plains of Africa wearing only a leopard skin. Twins Riki and Gaku Muroi and their grandfather, Gōken, bring Persia to Japan with them in Minato-machi (lit. Port Town), where she lives with a couple who own a grocery store. During an incident during the return flight to Japan, Persia finds herself in the "Lovely Dream", the land where dreams are born and grow. It is a wintry place, and dreams cannot get out. The Fairy Queen appears before Persia in the form of a butterfly, and explains that the Lovely Dream is in danger, requesting Persias help. She gives Persia a magical golden headband with a star which reacts to the word "Papurikko". With it, Persia can conjure a magic baton which bridges her world and Lovely Dream, as well as transform into an older self by saying "Perukko Raburin Kurukuru Rinkuru". She is sent with three kappa back into the regular world with the ...
When the Qajars had succeeded in restoring the unity of Persia, the sons of the Khan were no more able to maintain their independence like the other Caucasian chiefs and had to choose between Russia and Persia.[1] The Khan of Shirwan, Mustafa, who had already entered into negotiations with Zubov, submitted to the Russians in 1805, who occupied the Persian cities of Derbend and Baku the next year (1806) during the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813), but soon afterwards he made overtures to the Persians and sought help from them.[1] By the Treaty of Gulistan (12/24 October 1813) following the end of the 1804-1813 war, Persia was forced to cede its territories and regions comprising Darband, Quba, Shirwan and Baku, while giving up all claims on them as well.[1] Nevertheless, Mustafa continued to have secret dealings with Persia. It was not until 1820 that his territory was occupied by Russian troops; the Khan fled to Persia and Shemakha was irrevocably incorporated in Russian territory.[1] Iranian anger ...
Hidayat is always being squeezed by officers and sycophant prisoners, goods and books frequently stolen, he is also excluded in from the prison community block, and worst, Hidayat has always been a target because he often resists the extortion under the guise of mandatory rules in prison, and probably because Hidayat also was no longer able to temper or hold his anger, so he fired back with a beating for other detainees whom he considered in league with the authorities! ". With this, since anger has erupted and the comrades of Hidayat came into an open attack with the guards and the officers accomplice in prison, since then also Hidayats comrades have immediately been isolated in a room which is labeled at the prison as "Red cells", the prison inside the prison, for detainees who proved themselves against personnel rules and practices that fostered the prison to the senior inmates.. And of several short messages we received, that in the coming days the prosecutor who proceeds against comrade ...

The Parsi trace their ancestry to the ancestors of the Zoroastrians of modern Iran, who are followers of the Prophet Zoroaster or Zarathushtra [3]. In the 7th century, the Zoroastrian Sassanian dynasty was threatened by Islamic conquest and a small group of Zoroastrians fled to Gujarat in present-day India, where they were called Parsi (literally meaning people from Paras or Fars, the local term for Persia) [3, 4, 6, 13]. Several myths narrate their first arrival in the West Coast of India and settlement in Sanjan (Gujarat) [4, 14-17]. The most popular one mentioned in the Qissa-e-Sanjaan is that an Indian ruler called Jadi Rana sent a glass full of milk to the Parsi group seeking asylum [4, 18]. His message was that his kingdom was full with local people. The Zoroastrian immigrants put sugar (or a ring, in some versions of the story) into the milk to indicate an assimilation of their people into the local society, like "sugar in milk" [14, 18]. In contemporary India and Pakistan, we see ...
After the death of Abu Said, ruler of the Ilkhanate, in 1335, there was a power vacuum in Persia. In the end, Persia was split amongst the Muzaffarids, Kartids, Eretnids, Chobanids, Injuids, Jalayirids, and Sarbadars. In 1383, Timur started his lengthy military conquest of Persia, though he already ruled over much of Persian Khorasan by 1381, after Khwaja Masud, of the Sarbadar dynasty surrendered. Timur began his Persian campaign with Herat, capital of the Kartid dynasty. When Herat did not surrender he reduced the city to rubble and massacred most of its citizens; it remained in ruins until Shah Rukh ordered its reconstruction.[48] Timur then sent a General to capture rebellious Kandahar. With the capture of Herat the Kartid kingdom surrendered and became vassals of Timur; it would later be annexed outright less than a decade later in 1389 by Timurs son Miran Shah. Timur then headed west to capture the Zagros Mountains, passing through Mazandaran. During his travel through the north of ...
The Turis, themselves claim that they came originally from Persia with a Turkish family headed by Toghani who married with a Persian lady. This Turkish family quite later migrated eastward from Persia sometime before the establishment of the Mughal Empire in India and eventually settled at Nilab. In other place they claim that they came from Samarkand to Nilab. If their migration from Persia is considered then this afford a plausible explanation to the Shia religion of the Turis. There is little bit doubt in the origin of tribes that they established their summer headquarters at the head of the Valley and in the winter they took their flocks and herds down as for as the Indus at Nilab returning each year to the parent colony. The Bangash remained throughout the century in possession of the Kurram valley while the Turis pursued their nomadic wanderings up and down the valley. During one of their annual migration, about the year 1700 A.D. a quarrel broke out between the Turis and the Bangash owing ...
Book Profile . . . The book of Esther was recorded in Scripture to show how the Jewish people were protected and preserved from annihilation by the gracious hand of God-the sovereign controller of mankinds history. The authors identity is unknown, but the knowledge of Persian customs and etiquettes, and the familiarity of the palace and details of the kings reign, indicate that the author lived in Persia during the period the story was written. The timeline of the book fits in between chapters six and seven of Ezra, between the first return of the exiles to Jerusalem led by Zerubbabel and the second return led by Ezra. The story provides the only biblical account of the Jews who chose to remain behind in Persia rather than return to Palestine. The events chronicled in the book of Esther take place in Persia during the reign of King Ahasuerus (his Greek name is Xerxes) between 486-465 B.C. The story opens in the kings winter palace at Susa. King Ahasuerus is giving a lavish, large, six month ...
Parsis are known to be prone to cancer. Soon, we may know what causes it. For the first time, scientists have sequenced the entire genome of a Parsi woman (74) suffering from an heritable form of breast cancer. Researchers say, the exercise will help in finding variations in DNA. Once matched with DNA of other communities, they will know if these changes in DNA are unique to Parsis and are associated with the disease. The finding will lead to proper diagnosis and help the Parsis - a fast depleting community - not to be susceptible to it. The exercise is a part of Avestagenome Project - a study on the Parsis to determine the genetic basis of their longevity and age-related disorders. Speaking to TOI, Dr Sami Guzder, head of science and innovation division at Avesthagen - a Bangalore-based biotechnology company - said, we will know in two months that variations is possibly causing this spike in breast cancer cases among the Parsis. The incidence of breast cancer in most communities is strongly ...

By Mahtab Vahidi Rad. February 23, 2019. One year ago, the quiet, upper-class Tehran neighborhood of Golestan Haftom became a war zone.. In late January 2018, bloody clashes broke out between dervishes of the Gonabadi Sufi order, a beleaguered religious minority in Iran, and the security forces of the Islamic Republic.. When the carnage ended three weeks later, an untold number of dervishes were dead, as were three members of the police and Baseej (Basij) (paramilitary regime supporters). 156 dervishes are now serving long prison terms. Some were given lashes. Their families say they were sentenced in minutes-long "trials" that more closely resembled a medieval inquisition than a judicial process. Others who avoided arrest have been banned from leaving the country, participating in political activities, and speaking to the media.. Nevertheless, for the first time since the tragic events, dervishes who were present at Golestan Haftom are speaking out from behind bars. In an audio documentary ...
Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest extant religions in the world, originating in Persia (present-day Iran) during the second millennium BCE. Historical records indicate that migrants from Persia brought Zoroastrianism to India, but there is debate over the timing of these migrations. Here we present novel genome-wide autosomal, Y-chromosome and mitochondrial data from Iranian and Indian Zoroastrians and neighbouring modern-day Indian and Iranian populations to conduct the first genome-wide genetic analysis in these groups. Using powerful haplotype-based techniques, we show that Zoroastrians in Iran and India show increased genetic homogeneity relative to other sampled groups in their respective countries, consistent with their current practices of endogamy. Despite this, we show that Indian Zoroastrians (Parsis) intermixed with local groups sometime after their arrival in India, dating this mixture to 690-1390 CE and providing strong evidence that the migrating group was largely comprised of ...
Recently, I got a job as a lingerie model and met the most interesting and horny designer ever, Persia Monir. After getting fitted with lingerie for the commercial, she said I might have to sex as part of the job and offered to share some sex tips with me. Then she was going down on my sweet pussy. Suddenly I was eating out her hairy pussy and sucking on her big tits. Persia showed me a few positions to suck her pussy that I never even dreamed of. Then, she flipped me over and started to suck on my asshole and pussy till I came. This is a really great job, and I get paid for what I gave away for free.. ...
By Maryam Dehkordi. March 14, 2020. When it comes to the worlds toughest jobs, mining is definitely at the top of the list. Media photographs of miners often show tired men wearing clothing that offers them no protection, and sometimes they are not even wearing hardhats to protect them from falling debris they might encounter on the job.. Photographs of women working as miners are scarce. And a photograph of the only woman working in an Iranian mine could change the way people view mining forever.. Mahnaz Mirzaei was born in Zarand, Kerman, in 1980. She has been interested in mining since her teens and has been working in the industry for 14 years. Mirzaei is currently the head of Sarapardeh coal mine in the district of Kohbonan. "Before me there were women who worked in open-cast mines, but Im the first woman to go under the ground and mine tunnels," she said in an interview with the Karbanu website.. Mahnaz Mirzaei holds a Bachelors degree in mining engineering, specializing in exploration, ...
They knew not... the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath (Acts 13:27).. It shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate for ever (Jeremiah 25:12). Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom... (2 Chronicles 36:22, Ezra 1:1 onwards: see also Isaiah 45:1-8). Here then is the vindication of Jeremiah. But he never lived to see it. Therein lies one of the most testing things that a faithful and greatly opposed servant of the Lord can have to accept. Jeremiah had to fulfil his ministry knowing that, so far as his own time and the people thereof were concerned, it would be an apparent failure; he would not live to see that part of his ...
The following morning the Sartip turned out in my honour all the road-guards then in Sain Kala to the number of twelve to escort me to the castle of Muhammad Jik, a large village, the residence and property of the Naib Sartip. This was the wildest escort I have had yet. These men were dressed in full Kurdish finery, and besides guns elaborately inlaid with silver and ivory, and swords in much-decorated scabbards, they carried daggers with hilts incrusted with turquoises in their girdles. They went through all the usual equestrian performances, and added another, which consists in twirling a loaded and clubbed stick in a peculiar manner, and throwing it as far ahead as possible while riding at full gallop, the one who picks it up without dismounting being entitled to the next throw. Very few succeeded in securing it in the regulation manner, and the scrimmage for this purpose was often on the point of becoming a real fight. They worked themselves up to a pitch of wild excitement, screamed, ...
Persian, the more widely used name of the language in English historically, is an anglicized form derived from Latin *Persianus , Latin Persia , Greek Πέρσις Pérsis, aHellenized form of Old Persian Parsa. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the termPersian as a language name is first attested in English in the mid-16th century. Native Iranian Persian speakers call it Fârsi.Farsi is the arabicized form of Pârsi, due to a lack of the p phoneme in Standard Arabic (i.e., the p was replaced with an f). In English, this language is historically known as "Persian", though some Persian speakers migrating to the West continued to use "Farsi" to identify their language in English and the word gained some currency in English-speaking countries. "Farsi" is encountered in some linguistic literature as a name for the language, used both by Iranian and by foreign authors. According to the OED, the term Farsi was first used in English in the mid-20th century. The Academy of Persian ...

In Persia (Iran) Apothecary Rose was described by the Ancient Greek poet Sappho as " the queen of flowers", this rose has had many uses over time. The Ancient Romans consumed the petals as food and marinated them in wine to use them as a cure for hangovers. Avicenna, a famous eleventh century Arab physician and philosopher living in Moslem Spain, prepared rose water from the petals that he used in treating his patients for a variety of ailments. Knights returning from the Crusades brought the plant to Europe. It was grown chiefly in monastic gardens for medicinal purposes. In the Middle Ages, the blossoms were used in aroma therapy for the treatment of depression. In the nineteenth century beginning in the time of Napoleon, French pharmacists grew them in pots at the entrances of their shops, hence the origin of the common name Apothecary Rose. The Apothecary Rose became the professional symbol of the pharmaceutical profession much as the balanced scales became the professional symbol of the ...
Mud. The most frequent building material in Iranian cultural areas has always been mud, which is available everywhere. When wet, it can simply be plastered on walls without shaping. Alternatively, it can be tempered and formed into large blocks with more or less rectangular sides; the most common dimensions of such blocks, even today, are about 80 x 80 x 60 cm. Mud can also be manufactured into bricks and either dried (ḵešt) in the sun or baked (ājor). Sun-dried mud bricks were generally larger in antiquity and the early Middle Ages than they are today. For example, those used in Urartian (7th and 8th centuries b.c.e.) fortress walls measured about 50 x 50 x 12 cm (Kleiss, 1977), whereas modern mud bricks are approximately 22 x 22 x 5-6 cm. Plano-convex bricks, which are shaped like cushions or bread loaves, with one flat and one convex face, first appeared in Persia in the 8th-7th millennia b.c.e. in the walls of the Neolithic settlement at Tepe Ganj Dareh (Ganj Darrah Tappa) in Kurdistan ...
The second of my Zoroastrian Angels is "Vohu Manah." This means "Good Thought" or "Good Mind" in Avestan, the liturgical language of ancient Persia. This figure has many meanings. It is a male character, but rather impersonal in the Zoroastrian religious world. One meaning of "Good Thought" is "Compassion," for all the living things of the world and the Earth itself. Another meaning is rationality, reason, and avoidance of evil, the moral virtues of this Immortal being. ...
The Greek physician, author, courtier, naturalist and traveler, Ctesias (Gr. Κτησίας = Ktesias), wrote a history of Persia and Assyria ("The Persica"1) and India ("Indica"2) totaling some 23 volumes of historical accounts. His accounts have come down to us but as fragments. He flourished during the 5th century BCE Present at the court of the Persian king Artaxerxes II, Ctesias took notes from travelers adventures and reports from far off lands. Certain accounts are probably of long extinct species. Although some writers have questioned his accuracy, others have substantiated them. At times, he countered what Herodotus had reported in his "The Histories."3 Particularly, it is Ktesias "Indica" which I examined, noting some of the more unusual observations and reports.. "On India" was the first writing to introduce westerners to the people, places and things of India. We are indebted to Photios I of Constantinople (Gr. Φώτιος = Fotios) and his 280 volumes called Myriobiblon ...
More cobble hobbling and we found a decent place, paid for drinks and miraculously found a seat. It didnt take long before we were joined by some rather boring but pleasant enough bloke who took a shine to Angela, said comedy things like "You both look very alike", "Have you been here before?" and mispronounced every place name that came up in conversation. When he, AT LAST went to the bar, girly chat took place and I started yawning when he came back, Angela went to the ladies and I got talking to four very nice, but VERY young lads all aged 19, rather than talk to our new "friend" who was from Persia (he doesnt like saying Iran). They confirmed that everywhere was about £15 to get in, but at their tender age, having been IDd on the door, couldnt recommend anywhere in particular. Angela tried to ditch the Persian by saying I was tired (remember my stage yawns) but he was having none of it, insisting that they walk me back to the hotel then they go out again! Then he tried to persuade me, ...
7.50] Whereto Xerxes answered - "There is reason, O Artabanus! in everything which thou hast said; but I pray thee, fear not all things alike, nor count up every risk. For if in each matter that comes before us thou wilt look to all possible chances, never wilt thou achieve anything. Far better is it to have a stout heart always, and suffer ones share of evils, than to be ever fearing what may happen, and never incur a mischance. Moreover, if thou wilt oppose whatever is said by others, without thyself showing us the sure course which we ought to take, thou art as likely to lead us into failure as they who advise differently; for thou art but on a par with them. And as for that sure course, how canst thou show it us when thou art but a man? I do not believe thou canst. Success for the most part attends those who act boldly, not those who weigh everything, and are slack to venture. Thou seest to how great a height the power of Persia has now reached - never would it have grown to this point if ...
0. Introduction. What is wealth? What is a nation? And, accordingly, what is the wealth of nations? Through time the meaning of these terms has and continues to change and mutate. a) What is a Nation? First, what is a Nation? I will restrict myself to the Western European and especially of the English experience which I have studied in some detail. I thereby confess my relative ignorance, i.e., lack of knowledge, of the evolutionary experience in other regions of the world.. From Tribe to Empire & Back. Once upon a time a Nation was a tribe. A people of the same ethnicity, language and religion - a whole people but one often made up of different clans. Ancient Egypt, China, Persia and Greece were such nations; anyone outside was a barbarian. Rome, on the other hand, began as a tribe - the Latins - but ended up an Imperium in which citizenship was not limited by blood, birth, language or religion. The modern Nation States of Europe recapitulated Rome beginning as Germanic and other tribes - ...
Razib - If they use "Caucasian" for European origin people, why not "Mongoloid" for Chinese?. My reaction: Exactly. Lets be honest, what does it really mean to be Chinese, if the whole idea of being Chinese refers to a people with a particular culture. I would like anyone, pre-19th Century, to show me a book, document, or a map, from the modern nation of China, which shows conclusively, that the idea of there being a Chinese race and nation, is as old as Persia, or Greece. Can this be done? I doubt it. The truth is that the idea of there being a Chinese people comes from Arab traders, who traded Ming porcelain with the Europeans. When the Europeans asked the Arabs where the porcelain came from, the Arabs replied: Cinni - ese people. Today, in the English language, we call the porcelain people, the "CHINESE.". Are the "Uyghur" ethnically Chinese. They are certainly not "Han", since the Han were, once again, a culture, not an ethnic group. It really is time for a reality check for Chinese ...

As VT Marvin mentioned in the EB 2 Progress and the Community thread, help is needed on province descriptions, a task any amateur historian/writer can reasonably assume, with of course a slight bit of motivation. Therefore, I feel like it would be a good idea to devote a thread to this job and divvy out some work so we dont end up with duplicate work and move through the provinces quicker. These are the provinces that apparently need work: North Africa - basically all of them Persia -
till mid March. The holiday, which commemorates the foiling of a plot to kill all the Jews of ancient Persia, comes with its own set of unique and sometimes surprising commandments.. Perhaps the most surprising one is the mitzvah to get drunk. Not just to have a sip or two of wine, but to get truly sloshed. So sloshed that revelers cannot discern the difference between the names of Purims hero Mordechai and villain Haman.. You might think that the origin of this practically pagan-sounding ritual is fundamentally hedonistic. However both ancient and modern Jewish sources cite a rather esoteric explanation for drinking on Purim: Alcohol sublimates rationale thoughts and precludes inhibitions (as every college student knows!). The advantage of this altered state is that the drinker is truly humbled once they are stripped of their intellectual cynicism. With alcohol in their system, drunken Purim partiers are paradoxically enabled to appreciate that only a higher power can truly discern between ...
Thats right, he says achievements! The Treaties are supposed, by Costa, to have caused the fact that no more than 0,5% of the world population are problem drug users, plus the fact that non-problem drug users are 250 milion, only 5% of the world population. So he says that 90% of the drug users have no problems with it, something we have known all along. Problem drug use is an exception, not the rule, despite the drug policies that marginalise, pathologise and criminalise any user all over the world. So, Costa could easily have said we do not need a UN based Inquisition that constructs a universal problem out of what is mostly not.. Moreover, Costa fails to remark that both life time and current use of some illicit drugs, in our present world has grown in countries where it was almost non existant in the days the Treaties were being written. We see large historic and cultural differences over time and place, although in countries where opiate use was culturally embedded (Persia,Afganistan, ...

As Professor Jared Diamond explained so well in his book Guns, Germs and Steel, almost every variety of fruit, vegetable, cereal and domestic animal on earth used to be found only in one part of the world before humans traded and cultivated/raised them. For example, oranges and apricots originated from China, bananas from south-east Asia, apples from central Asia, carrots from Afghanistan, spinach from Persia, garlic and onions from the Middle East, while the pumpkin, tomato, avocado, potato

Volume 1, Chapter 4, Section 2 -- Commentary upon the foregoing Account, by Abu Zeid al Hasan of Siraff. Having very carefully examined the book I was desired to peruse, that I might confirm what the author relates so far as he agrees with what I have learnt concerning the affairs of navigation, the kingdoms on the coast, and the state of the countries of which he treats, and that I might add what I have elsewhere collected concerning these matters: I find that this book was composed in the year of the Hegira 237, and that the accounts given by the author are conformable with what I have heard from merchants who have sailed from Irak or Persia, through these seas. I find also all that the author has written to be agreeable to truth, except some few passages, in which he has been misinformed. Speaking of the custom, of the Chinese in setting meat before their dead, and believing that the dead had eaten, we had been told the same thing, and once believed it; but have since learnt, from a person of ...
So while I have no quarrel with Mr. Bushs decision to go to war, and to stay in the war, I disagree with the way he has chosen to fight it. By confronting the Iraqi terrorists and insurrectionists primarily with a winning-hearts-and-minds approach, he and his advisors have got it exactly backwards.. Whether it was the conquest of Babylonia, or of Persia, or of Greece, or of Rome, or of the Byzantines, or of the Turks, history teaches us that before we can win an enemys heart and mind, we must first overwhelm him with so much military might that he accepts in his brain and in his bowels that it is time to give up. Only when he surrenders and is completely disarmed and pacified, can a victor even begin to reach his heart and mind. The same was true for Hitlers Germans and Hirohitos Japanese, The Germans and the Japanese surrendered only after they had been ground down by superior Allied force applied over a number of very bloody back-and-forth years.. Muslims, above all others, know this. They ...

This post is amazing. Just want to add that the second picture shows the photographer Barbara Hamilton-Wright. She accompanied Annemarie Schwarzenbach in the late 1930s for several weeks to travel by car along the eastern coast, as far as Maine. I found her work *accidentally* at the local library when I was 15 and I have fallen in love with her since then. In fact, after reading I decided to become a lesbian. I highly recommend her best work Das glückliche Tal (The Happy Valley) published in 1940. It´s kind of a lyrical documentary of her journey to Persia and her love to the landscape (it reminded her of the swiss alps) as well as her relationship with a woman. As far as I know, there are only few translation of her work (she wrote mostly in German). Her work is so tender, brave and honest. She means a lot to me.. ReplyDelete ...

SAVAK interrogators were sent abroad for scientific training to prevent unwanted deaths from brute force. Brute force was supplemented with the bastinado; sleep deprivation; extensive solitary confinement; glaring searchlights; standing in one place for hours on end; nail extractions; snakes (favored for use with women); electrical shocks with cattle prods, often into the rectum; cigarette burns; sitting on hot grills; acid dripped into nostrils; near-drownings; mock executions; and an electric chair with a large metal mask to muffle screams while amplifying them for the victim. The metaphysical doctrine of Razi, insofar as it can be reconstructed, derives from his concept of the five eternal principles. God, for him, does not create the world from nothing but rather arranges a universe out of pre-existing principles. His account of the soul features a mythic origin of the world in which God out of pity fashions a physical playground for the soul in response to its own desires; the soul, once fallen into the new realm God has made for it, requires Gods further gift of intellect in order to find its way once more to salvation and freedom. In this scheme, intellect does not appear as a separate principle but is rather a later grace of God to the soul; the soul becomes intelligent, possessed of reason and therefore able to discern the relative value of the other four principles. Whereas the five principles are eternal, intellect as such is apparently not. Such a doctrine of intellect is sharply at odds with that of all of Razis philosophical contemporaries, who are in ...

The king of Persia from 486-465 BCE; the son of Darius I and Atossa.. The fact that Atossa was the daughter of the founder of the Persian Empire, Kyrus (Cyrus), gave Xerxes a clear advantage over Darius other sons but Atossa wielded great influence over Darius and before he left on an expedition to Egypt, Darius officially appointed Xerxes his successor; Darius died before he could return to Persia and Xerxes became king of the Persian Empire circa 486 BCE.. In Greece, he was known as The Warrior; his massive army invaded Greece in 480 BCE for a variety of reasons including: 1) revenge for his fathers humiliating defeat ten years previously in 490 BCE, 2) the prompting of his general and cousin, Mardonius, who wanted to be satrap of Greece, 3) the vengeful encouragement of the banished Athenian tyrant, Hipparkhus (Hipparchus), and 4) the self-serving prophecies of another Athenian expatriate, Onomakritus (Onomacritus); the only man to advise Xerxes not to invade Greece was his uncle, ...
Most at risk, of course, are the people of Iran, people as peaceful as any other, or perhaps more so. As in any country, no matter what its government, the people of Iran are fundamentally good, decent, peaceful, just, and fundamentally like you and me. Ive met people from Iran. You may have met people from Iran. They look like this. Theyre not a different species. Theyre not evil. A "surgical strike" against a "facility" in their country would cause a great many of them to die very painful and horrible deaths. Even if you imagine that Iran would not retaliate for such attacks, this is what the attacks would in themselves consist of: mass murder. And what would that accomplish? It would unite the people of Iran and much of the world against the United States. It would justify in the eyes of much of the world an underground Iranian program to develop nuclear weapons, a program that probably does not exist at present, except to the extent that legal nuclear energy programs move a country closer ...

The activity of Muslim geographers, which had been so intense during the ninth and tenth centuries, abated during the present century. For the second half of this century two men will be recorded, one in the West and the other in the East. The western one, al-Bakri, is of special importance, become the road-book which the compiled in the traditional manner is the oldest one of its kind due to a Spaniard. He also compiled a dictionary of ancient (i.e., Arabian) geography. The Eastern one is also a very arresting personality. Nasir-I-Khusraw was an Ismaili missionary who, starting from Egypt, traveled extensively in the Near East and as far east as Persia. He wrote in Persia an account of his travels, which is equally valuable from the geographical and from the historical point of view ...
The internet has changed things too much.. In Persia there could in the past be a managed decline of fervour. People would increasingly ignore or pay lip service to the imams and eventually you could end up like secular Persia before 1979. Now the problem is that the Council of Imams can watch everyone through the reach of the internet, the Basij and the IRG. The ambitious know that they can rise via those organisations in the same way that people in the CCCP could rise through the secret police and Party. But now with the internet able to monitor everyone everywhere theres no way to avoid political Islam in Iran.. At the same time no leader of a muslim country can overtly abandon or reduce the power of Islam because if they try it some jihadi will assassinate them. Abbas in the West Bank cannot make peace with Israel - if he tried to hed be dead in a week. Same goes for any other despot in MENA. Sadat is another example - even though he had solid control of the Egyptian Army. I cant think of ...

The current study suggests that suicide death is higher in male asylum seekers than in the general male population of the Netherlands. The incidence was higher than in the reference population for several regions of origin, despite possible underreporting. As in many populations, in asylum seekers suicide was more prevalent in men and hospital-treated suicidal behaviour more prevalent in women [5]. The male to female ratio for the number of suicide deaths in this study (10:1), however, was higher than generally found (between 3:1 and 7.5:1) [5]. Various hypothesises can be formulated for this gender difference. The higher risk for males could be related to the lower use of mental health services. Additional explanations are that males are at greater risk if they are forced to return to their country of origin, the supposed higher pressure to succeed, more negative consequences of not being allowed to work and a higher prevalence of drug use [25, 26]. Protective factors for women could be having ...
In this study of patients with type 2 diabetes treated pharmacologically for the first time, we found high rates of community-based antibiotic treatment and hospitalisations for infection during follow-up. We also found that patients who initiated pharmacotherapy with insulin, and to less extent those who initiated sulfonylurea, were at increased risk of hospital-treated infection compared with those who initiated pharmacotherapy with metformin. In contrast, there was little difference in rates of community-based antibiotic use between initiators of different GLDs.. Our results corroborate findings from the Swedish study that reported an increased risk of hospitalisation for infection among patients who initiated their pharmacotherapy with insulin alone (HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.26 to 1.50) or with other oral GLDs (other than metformin) (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.28), compared with metformin.9 Furthermore, our results are in line with the observed reduced odds of septicaemia in metformin users versus ...

The movie blockbuster 300 about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C that opposed an army of 300 spartans to the massive army of King Xerxes of Persia has already triggered a great deal of reactions from the Iranian Diaspora and the circulation of a petition condemning the film by some members of the Persian Community including academicians who regard the film as a distortion of history. Paradoxically even International politics has to some degree taken the movie more seriously than what it may have intended to be initially with a sheer condemnation by the Islamic Republic of Iran through the spokesman of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Iranian President is already known for his own radical rhetoric s against the West and his call to wipe out the Stare of Israel from the Surface of the Map. Given the fact that the 25 century old Persian Monarchy was ousted by a popular revolution back in 1979, the reaction of the Islamic government in defense of the image of King Xerxes and the Ancient ...
The ancient Iranian city of Ahvaz is located in the province of Khuzestan at 31o 19 north latitude and 48o 46 east longitude and an altitude of 82 feet, Ahvaz lies on the Karun river below its confluence with the Dezful river or Ab-e Dez in the Khuzestan plain, but at a point where the river breaks through the low ridge of sandstone hills, the Jabal Hamrin, so that gypsum rocks in the river bed cause a series of rapids, enumerated at five by Curzon, of which only three presented a serious impediment to navigation; the port of Khorramšahr on the Persian Gulf lies 113 miles below the modern town of Ahvaz. The Karun has long been the only river of any length in Persia which is navigable, but these rapids have necessitated, for the most part, transshipment of goods from Khorramšahr at Ahvaz to boats on the higher reaches of the river traveling to Šuštar.

In Luxor, Egypt, live sisters that are the last members of the Mazin, family of legendary professional dancers and musicians known as The Banat Mazin. Known internationally as The Ghawazi, the word loosely translates to "invader" or "foreigner" in Arabic, with the plural form being Ghawazi, and the singular being Ghaziya. The Mazin family is thought to originally be of the Nawar (sometimes referred to as Nawari) tribe, and to have perhaps migrated from Persia centuries ago to settle in Egypt. The Mazin family gained much renown for their distinctive dance skills, and speak a dialect much more similar to Rom than it is to Arabic. The signature style of the dance includes extensive work with finger cymbals, and arm positions that are relaxed, and bent at the elbows, very unlike Raks Sharqi. The Ghawazi costuming is also very different- they wear shorter dirndl style skirts covered in rayon fringe and paillettes, with the skirt being worn at the waist as opposed to the hips, with matching tops; ...

Eight hundred years ago, relatively small armies of mounted warriors suddenly exploded outward from the cold, arid high-elevation grasslands of Mongolia, and conquered the largest contiguous empire in history. Led by Genghis Khan and his sons and grandsons, the Mongols briefly ruled most of modern-day Russia, China, Korea, southeast Asia, Persia, India, the Middle East and eastern Europe. They reshaped world geography, culture and history in ways that still resound today. How did they do it? Among the forces at work: the Mongols fast horses and brilliant cavalry tactics; their openness to new technologies; and the political genius of Genghis himself. Now, a research group is looking into a possible other factor: climate change. The idea may have implications not only for our understanding of history, but for modern Mongolia and the wider world.. ...
Dr. Donald Abrams of UCSF sifts through some of the complex data on the relationship between nutrition and cancer and endeavors to help separate fact from fi…. According to Walter Gratzer, the study of nutrition probably began during the 6th century BC. In China, the concept of Qi developed, a spirit or "wind" similar to what Western Europeans later called pneuma. Food was classified into "hot" (for example, meats, blood, ginger, and hot spices) and "cold" (green vegetables) in China, India, Malaya, and Persia. Humours developed perhaps first in China alongside qi. Ho the Physician concluded that diseases are caused by deficiencies of elements (Wu Xing: fire, water, earth, wood, and metal), and he classified diseases as well as prescribed diets. About the same time in Italy, Alcmaeon of Croton (a Greek) wrote of the importance of equilibrium between what goes in and what goes out, and warned that imbalance would result disease marked by obesity or emaciation.. Drawing on the great progress in Talmudic scholarship over the last century, this book is both an introduction to a close reading of rabbinic literature and a demonstration of the development of rabbinic thought on education in the first centuries of the Common Era. In Roman Palestine and Sasanid Persia, a small group of approximately 2,000 Jewish scholars and rabbis sustained a thriving national and educational culture. They procured loyalty to the national language and oversaw the retention of a national identity. This accomplishment was unique in the Roman Near East, and few physical artifacts remain. The scope of oral teaching, however, was vast and was committed to writing only in the high Middle Ages. The content of this oral tradition remains the staple of Jewish learning through modern times. Though oral learning was common in many ancient cultures, the Jewish approach has a different theoretical basis and different aims. The author explores the evolution and institutionalization of Jewish

You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes." (Haggai 1:6). With the country in such turmoil and the future more bleak and dicey than it has been in a long time, many people are turning inward, hoping to carve out a safety net of some sort-"just in case." While the Bible certainly cautions prudence and careful consideration of our personal responsibilities for our families, we are never told to trust either our own wisdom or the worlds advice for the future.. Lessons from Israel. The prophet Haggai lived in a challenging time in Israels history. Cyrus of Persia had just let some 50,000 of the Jewish captives in Babylon return to Jerusalem with orders to rebuild their temple and restore worship in their land. That land had long been held under the horrible mismanagement of pagans. The city was in shambles, and ...
