DIURETICS EFFECT OF AVOCADO LEAF (Persea americana Mill.) ETHANOL EXTRACT ON THE GASTRIC HISTOLOGY OF WISTAR MALE RATS (Rattus norvegicus)
Tuberculosis is considered a re-emerging disease and one of the most important health problems worldwide. It causes approximately three million deaths every year. In the last decades multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been detected, exacerbating the situation. The main objective of this research was to test the effect of Persea americana and Gymnosperma glutinosum (commonly used in Mexico to treat diverse diseases) leaf extracts and active fractions against M. tuberculosis H37Ra and H37Rv strains. Colonyforming units method was used to determine the MICs of plant extracts, active fractions and clofazimine against the mycobacterial strains. Methanol extracts from both plants were observed to possess antimycobacterial activity; however, P. americana extracts possessed higher antimicrobial activity against such mycobacteria strains than those of G. glutinosum, as determined by their respective MICs of 125 μg/ml versus 250 μg/ml against H37Ra strain, respectively, and 62.5μg/ml versus
The study aimed at determining the protective potential of the avocado seed extract against gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in albino mice. Histopathological results were obtained in order to verify such a protective potential. Significant structual changes in the mice kidneys were caused by high dosage of gentamicin on T1. However, no damage was noted during the histological evaluation of the kidney slides during T0. When compared, glomerulus and renal tubules remain intact in T0 against the damaged tubules and ruptured glomerular capsules in T1. Attempts at establishing the mode of protection of the avocado seed extract was not determined in the study. With these, there is a need to identify the chemical compounds found in the avocado seed and their mode of effect on the cell. Other plant species, likewise, could also be determined which could have the potential of providing protection against nephrotoxicity. In the process, other organs could also be subjected to examination in order to ...

The use of traditional breeding for improvement of avocado cultivars is time consuming, hence other methods such as genetic transformation by Agrobacterium is indispensable to adopt. The strain GV3850/pBI121gave best transformation outcome compared to five other binary vectors (AGL1/pCGP904; AGL1/pBI121; GV3850/pCGP904; LBA4404/pCG-P904 and LBA4404/pBI121) under different pH and acetosyringone concentrations. The optimal condition for reliable transformation was by using 200 μM acetosyringone and a pH of 5.2. Transformed embryonic shoots co-cultivated with GV3850/pBI121 were tested using the histochemical x-gluc assay. Further analysis was conducted by polymerase chain reaction using specific primers for the reporter gene (GUS).
However, Hass avocado trees have high yields compared to other varieties and a mature tree can produce over a million blooms. Most Hass trees bloom twice a year and occasionally there is a third bloom. Hass trees start bearing fruit in three to five years and grow from 15 to 30 feet tall. The lifespan of an average tree is several decades.. Unlike other avocados, which have smooth green skin, the Hass avocado fruit has dark green bumpy skin that darkens as it ripens, eventually reaching a very dark shade that is almost black. Like all avocados, Hass avocados ripen only once they are picked from the tree and they can be left on the tree for several months after the fruit has matured.. When it comes to nutritional content, Hass avocados are higher in fat than other varieties, which gives them a richer taste and smoother, creamier texture. 80 per cent of avocados consumed in the world are Hass Avocados, meaning all other varieties make up only a small proportion of the remaining 20 per cent.. One of the great cultural advantages of growing up in Southern California in the 60s and 70s was the availability of Hass avocadoes in our local markets and even in our backyards. Alligator pears from Florida - those big, smooth skinned and watery fruits - were the only avocadoes available on the East Coast then. Times have changed. There are dozens of varieties of avocados, but Hass avocados now account for 80% of the market. All Hass avocado trees are descended from a single mother tree raised by a mail carrier named Rudolph Hass, of La Habra Heights, California. Hass patented the productive tree in 1935, and the mother tree finally died of root rot in September 2002.. Persea americana, or the avocado, possibly originated in the Tehuacan Valley[12] in the state of Puebla, Mexico,[13] although fossil evidence suggests similar species were much more widespread millions of years ago. However, there is evidence for three possible separate domestications of the avocado, resulting in the currently recognized Mexican (aoacatl), Guatemalan (quilaoacatl), and West Indian (tlacacolaocatl) landraces.[14][15] The Mexican and Guatemalan landraces originated in the highlands of those countries, while the West Indian landrace is a lowland variety that ranges from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador to Peru,[14] achieving a wide range through human agency before the arrival of the Europeans.[15] The three separate landraces were most likely to have already intermingled[a] in pre-Columbian America and were described in the Florentine Codex.[15] The earliest residents were living in temporary camps in an ancient wetland eating avocados, chilies, mollusks, sharks, birds, ...

Pathogenicity tests with Phytophthora cinnamomi were conducted on 25 perennial species from the jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest of Western Australia. Most species tested had been found in a separate study to be scarce on sites affected by Phytophthora cinnamomi but frequently found in unaffected vegetation. Some species that were known to be field-tolerant of P. cinnamomi and some that were highly susceptible to infection were included in the study for comparison. Phytophthora cinnamomi was recorded from 13 of 17 species not previously known to be susceptible. Phytophthora cinnamomi was subsequently isolated from dead plants of two of these 13 species in the field. The interpretation of results from the glasshouse trials was difficult for some species because of inconsistent patterns of death and P. cinnamomi isolation in the glasshouse trials. Phytophthora cinnamomi probably causes decline in wild populations of Stylidium amoenum, based on the ease of field and glasshouse isolation of P. ...

Phytophthora cinnamomi has been recognised as a key threatening process to Australias biodiversity by the Commonwealths Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Despite over 80 years of extensive research, its exact mode of survival is still poorly understood. It is widely accepted that thin- and thick-walled chlamydospores are the main survival propagules while oospores are assumed to play no role in the survival of the pathogen in the Australian environment, yet evidence is limited. The saprophytic ability of the pathogen is still unresolved despite the important role this could play in the ability of the pathogen to survive in the absence of susceptible hosts. This thesis aimed to investigate chlamydospores, oospores and the saprophytic ability of P. cinnamomi to determine their contribution to survival.. Phytophthora cinnamomi did not show saprophytic ability in non-sterile soils. The production of thick-walled chlamydospores and selfed oospores of P. cinnamomi in ...

In recent years, outbreaks of nonnative invasive insects and pathogens have caused significant levels of tree mortality and disturbance in various forest ecosystems throughout the United States. Laurel wilt, caused by the pathogen Raffaelea lauricola (T.C. Harr., Fraedrich and Aghayeva) and the primary vector, the redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff), is a nonnative pest-disease complex first reported in the southeastern United States in 2002. Since then, it has spread across eleven southeastern states to date, killing hundreds of millions of trees in the plant family Lauraceae. Here, we examine the impacts of laurel wilt on selected vulnerable Lauraceae in the United States and discuss management methods for limiting geographic expansion and reducing impact. Although about 13 species belonging to the Lauraceae are indigenous to the United States, the highly susceptible members of the family to laurel wilt are the large tree species including redbay (Persea borbonia (L.) Spreng) and

The redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff, vectors laurel wilt, Raffaelea lauricola T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva, that quickly kills all large diam (> 2.5cm) redbay trees [Persea borbonia (L.) Sprengel] in an area but smaller diam trees (< 2.5cm) survive for years. We measured densities of X. glabratus attacks on hanging bolts of freshly cut mature redbay annually for 5 yr (2007-2011) at 7 locations varying in age of infestation from newly infested in 2007 to those that were among the oldest infested areas (infested in 2002 or earlier), to determine if populations persist after mature host trees are gone. Attack densities on redbay bolts at the field sites varied from 10-25 X. glabratus attacks/100 cm2 where large dying redbay trees were still present, to < 1 attack/100cm2 at sites where few or no trees > 2.5 cm diam near ground level were still living at the beginning of the study in 2007. Despite having no large trees available, populations of the beetle persisted at 2 of ...

A series of new and known geranylated phenol/methoxyphenol derivatives has been tested in vitro as inhibitor agents of mycelial growth of Phytophthora cinnamomi. The activity of tested compounds is correlated with the nature, number, and position of the substituent group on the aromatic ring. Results indicate that the most active geranylated derivatives are those having two hydroxyl groups (or one -OH and one -OCH3) attached to the aromatic ring. Interestingly, these derivatives are as active as Metalaxil®;, a commonly used commercial fungicide. Thus, our results suggest that some of these compounds might be of agricultural interest due to their potential use as fungicides against P. cinnamomi. The effect of structure on fungicide activity is discussed in terms of electronic distribution on both the aromatic ring and side geranyl chain. All tested compounds have been synthesized by direct coupling of geraniol and the respective phenol. Interestingly, new digeranylated derivatives were obtained ...

For my recipe, I used 2 small-medium fuerte avocados, but you could use 1 large avocado, any kind, or even a little bit less avocado. However, I am an avocado addict, so I used 2. I just used a fork and smashed the avocado up, adding a squirt of yellow mustard, a squirt of lite mayo, 2 slices of cold dill pickles chopped, salt and pepper, paprika, and some chopped red onion - however much of each ingredient you like. I love recipes like this that you really just adjust the ingredients to your taste and what you like. Some people leave the mayo out since they are using avocado, and a lot of people hate paprika. Next time I make it, I will probably leave out the red onion. It made for some killer breath, and made the salad more guacamole-tasting than egg salad ...

Phytophthora root rot, caused by Phytophthora megasperma Drechs. f. sp. medicaginis Kuan and Erwin (Pmm), is a major cause of decline of established alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Three different inheritance modes for resistance to Pmm have been proposed and independently inherited resistances could be combined into a single alfalfa population. The objective of this study was to determine if genetic factors conditioning resistance to Pmm from diploid (2n 2x = 16) and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 32) alfalfa are independently inherited. Resistance to Pmm was transferred from the 4x alfalfa plant M193 to the 2x level by use of triploid-bridge crosses, and the inheritance of resistance in the derived diploids DDR-850, DDR- 1049, DDR- 1051, and DDR-1070 was studied. Each derived diploid was crossed as the female and male parent with susceptible 2x plants. Progeny were grown in the greenhouse in pots containing a peat:sand mix and inoculated at $ weeks with a chopped mycelial suspension of Pmm. Resistance in ...

Avocado peel, a byproduct from the avocado pulp industry, is a promising source of polyphenolic compounds. We evaluated the effect of a proanthocyanidin-rich avocado peel polyphenol extract (AvPPE) on the composition and metabolic activity of human fecal microbiota cultured for 24 h in a bioreactor in the presence of high protein (HP) amounts and the effect of the resulting culture supernatants (CSs) on HT-29Glc(-/+) and Caco-2 cells. AvPPE decreased the HP-induced production of ammonia, H2S, propionate, and isovalerate and increased that of indole and butyrate. Microbiota composition was marginally affected by HP, whileAvPPE increased the microorganisms/abundance of phylum Actinobacteria, families Coriobacteriaceae and Ruminococcaceae, and genus Faecalibacterium. AvPPE failed to prevent the HP-induced decrease of HT-29Glc(-/+) cell viability and energy efficiency but prevented the HP-induced alterations of barrier function in Caco-2 cells. Additionally, the genotoxic effect of the CSs upon HT-29Glc(-/+

The avocado is a fruit native to Latin America, has a high nutritional value and is one of the main fruits of daily consumption. The Honduran avocado market depends heavily on imports, which is why the price of avocado is too high and the average consumption per year is only 1 kg per person. Comparing this figure with the average of 7 kg of other Central American countries, we can see that the avocado is still of great potential for market in the Republic of Honduras. Therefore, the Government of the Republic of Honduras puts the development of the avocado industry as one of the priorities of the national agricultural development. It also has the prospect of increasing production of healthy seedlings of avocado and expanding the area of the crop, so that the Republic of Honduras will be able to increase the supply of domestically produced avocado and meet the demands of the domestic market. Overall, the project will: 1. Improve the facilities for the avocado seedling reproduction; 2. Build the ...
