Two surgical procedures for exposing palatally impacted maxillary canines are frequently used today: the open technique with free eruption and the closed technique. Currently, it is unclear which approach is more advantageous. The goal of this study was to compare palatally impacted canines exposed by both open and closed techniques with naturally erupted canines. Patients were treated for unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines with either the open technique with free eruption (n = 22) or the closed technique (n = 21). The surgically exposed canine and the naturally erupted canine in the contralateral quadrant were compared 3 to 6 months after deband by measurements including periodontal pocket depths, gingival recession, width of keratinized tissue, and bone support. The results indicated no difference between periodontal pocket depth of impacted canines exposed by the closed or open technique, but naturally erupted canines did have significantly smaller pocket depths (average ...

A diagnosis has been made that you have periodontal disease. It affects about 80% of the adult population when you have a periodontal pocket of 3mm. or greater. Some clinical signs that you may be complaining about are bleeding gums, bad odor, bad taste and painful teeth. Your dentist is recommending, a conservative non surgical approach which would correct the periodontal pockets. First, your dentist or hygienist would Scale to remove all calculus and debris so the area is clean of all the irritants. Then we would follow with the LASER in the pockets so the area becomes clean and sterile by killing the bad bacteria. The last part of the treatment is we place medicine. ...
Laura Lee: I would say that youd want to get the plaque and everything else scraped off your teeth and give yourself a head start. Dont do it instead of. Dr. Meinig: Thats right. Absolutely its important that you get all of the deposits removed, otherwise.... Incidentally those infections from periodontal pockets are as serious as root canal filled teeth are, so its very important that you know that. Martin: Well, just recently I had had a relapse where one of my front teeth has been pressed back partly out of the jawbone as far as support is concerned and developed a pretty serious periodontal pocket because I used an infected dental floss, well I hadnt used a brand new one, I used one I used a couple of days previous and apparently the food had become contaminated and it infected the lower gum, down the root line below the gum. And I developed a pretty serious pus pocket down there which it took about three days to clean out physically, but then I merely started taking high doses of ...

While endoscopic scaling does not replace periodontal surgery since it doesnt allow the regrowth of bone or the creation of gum tissue, it does allow us to nonsurgically treat periodontal pockets that have reoccurred in our existing patients since we can access the tartar. In addition, there are many patients for whom the effective use of an endoscope can significantly reduce the amount of surgical exposure in a more painless and effective manner. ...

Twelve patients (7 male and 5 female), between 28-46 years old, with moderate to severe periodontitis, light- or non-smokers, and displaying a total of 26 deep intrabony defects, were treated either with a combination of α-TCP (BioBase® α-pore Biovision GmbH., Ilmenau, Germany) and an oily Calcium Hydroxide suspension (Osteoinductal®, Osteoinductal GmbH, Muenchen, Germany) or with the α-TCP alone. All patients underwent initial therapy one month prior to surgery. All patients were instructed and motivated to maintain a good oral hygiene level, verified by a reduction of the PI (Silness and Löe) , 1. Before surgery and six months after, the following clinical parameters were registrated: the periodontal pocket depth (PD), the gingival recession (GR) and the clinical attachment level (CAL). All measurements were performed with a rigid periodontal probe (PCP 12, Hu-Friedy), at six sites per tooth (buccal: mesiobuccal, central, distobuccal; oral: mesiooral, central, distooral). Results: The mean DMFT value observed was 3.69 ± 3.31. The differences between the two groups were statistically significant for D e F components (p < 0.05). The caries-free rate is lower in the call-up soldiers group (12.57%) than that reported for the cadets group (25.26%) and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). Statistically significant differences were observed in DMFT values between the two groups stratified by educational level. A healthy periodontium was observed in more than 50% of the sample. In the call-up soldiers group, 40.95% had healthy periodontal conditions; 40.25% of the subjects showed bleeding on probing; 19.03% presented with calculus; and 2.77% presented periodontal pockets 4-5 mm deep. In the cadets group, 57.95% had healthy periodontal conditions; 38.18% of the subjects showed bleeding on probing; 3.52% presented with calculus; and 0.35% presented periodontal pockets 4-5 mm deep. The differences in proportion between the two groups were always ...
When advanced gum disease (periodontitis) develops, your teeth are in danger: At this stage, the ligaments and bone tissue that surround them are being destroyed, and you could even begin losing teeth! If the disease cant be controlled by non-surgical treatments like cleaning and scaling, then periodontal flap surgery may be your best treatment option.. Flap surgery is todays leading method for treating and repairing periodontal pockets. What are these pockets? They are areas below the gum line where gum tissue has detached from the teeth, resulting in an uncleansable space where harmful bacteria can proliferate. These bacteria cause inflammation of the tissues, resulting in sensitivity, bleeding, and pain. Left untreated, they can cause a host of problems including gum disease, loss of the tooth-supporting bone structure, and possibly even systemic (whole-body) problems.. When periodontal pockets develop, the first step in treating them is usually via cleaning and scaling (also referred to ...
We report a case of a girl with a perplexing clinical feature of simultaneous occurrence of periodontal and skin abscesses that resolved following periodontal therapy. Infections and inflammations have the capacity to metastasize and despite the localized nature of periodontal disease, infection of the sulcus/periodontal pocket can lead to inflammatory responses beyond the periodontium. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is primarily a non-specific marker of inflammation with multiple pro-inflammatory properties and some studies have noted its concurrent reduction and CVD following periodontal therapy. A 12 year old Nigerian girl presented clinically with simultaneous occurrence of aggressive periodontitis, periodontal and skin abscesses with eventual teeth loss. Pre-operative quantitative analysis of plasma CRP was 1500mg/l, moderate growth of Staphylococcus aureus ...

This Newsletter consists of a summary from a recently published research paper from NIOM. The effect on macrophages of exposure to filler particles and monomers was investigated. It was found that the release of substances related to tissue defense was reduced after exposure. An attenuated cytokine release may have implications for the macrophage immune response and result in impaired bacterial clearance from for example a periodontal pocket. Read the article: Dental composites modulate cytokine signaling in cells.. In addition, we present a method that can be used for identification of microorganisms and for testing the effect of antimicrobial substances and techniques: Microbiology testing and research.. ...

Helicobacter pylori infection, which causes peptic ulcers and gastric cancer, is considered a possible cause of halitosis. Recently, the oral cavity was identified as a possible H. pylori reservoir, particularly in the presence of periodontal disease, which is a cause of halitosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate by PCR the prevalence of oral H. pylori in the saliva of subjects complaining of halitosis. Samples were obtained from 326 non-dyspeptic subjects, comprising 251 subjects with actual malodour and 75 subjects without halitosis. DNA was extracted from the samples, and the presence of H. pylori and periodontopathic bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola and Prevotella intermedia was examined by PCR. H. pylori was detected in 21 (6.4 %) of 326 samples. The methyl mercaptan concentration and periodontal parameters including tooth mobility, periodontal pocket depth (PPD) and occult blood in the saliva were significantly greater in the H. pylori-positive subjects.
The aim of present study was to evaluate the frequency of 3 members of herpes virus family in the subgingival plaque samples from periodontal pockets and healthy sites of an aggressive periodontitis population. Fifteen subjects with aggressive periodontitis took part in this study. Subgingival plaque samples were harvested from their 3 deepest pockets and 3 healthy sites and subjected to a nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique to detect Human Cyto-megallo Virus (HCMV), Epstein Barr virus 1 (EBV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1). Seven individuals revealed HCMV in their diseased sites while only 2 of these individuals revealed HCMV at their healthy sites too. Three individuals showed EBV-1 only at their diseased sites, while the remainig diseased sites and all healthy sites were negative for this virus. Finally, HSV-1 was found only at one of the diseased samples, but none of the healthy samples. Members of the Herpesvirus family might be recovered at periodontal sites. The ...

Toothbrushing is a daily routine. Still, when adults are asked to manually perform oral hygiene to the best of their abilities, a considerable amount of plaque persists. Little is known about the performance of people who use a powered toothbrush. The present study thus analysed whether the capability to achieve oral cleanliness is better in people for whom powered toothbrushing is a daily routine. University students, who either performed powered (N = 55) or manual (N = 60) toothbrushing for more than 6 months on a daily basis were asked to clean their teeth to the best of their abilities by their own device. Plaque was assessed prior to and immediately after brushing. Furthermore, gingival bleeding, recessions, periodontal pocket depths and dental status were assessed. Oral hygiene performance was video-taped and analyzed with respect to brushing duration, sites of brushing and application of interproximal cleaning devices. No differences between groups were found with respect to plaque before and

Introduction: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is an infectious disease resulting in the inflammation of the supportive structures of teeth, which leads to loss of attachment and bone, and eventually tooth loss if left untreated. Genetic polymorphisms in the proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin-1 (IL-1A and IL-1B) isoforms have been associated with CP in Caucasians, Asians and Arabs but little is known about their role in Africans. Therefore, the aim of this study was to resolve the association between genetic polymorphisms in IL-1A and IL-1B isoforms and chronic periodontitis in two Kenyan coastal communities, the Taita and the Swahili. Objectives: 1) To determine the association between socio-demographic characteristics, clinical features and CP amongst cases and controls in both ethnic groups. 2) To determine the severity of CP in both ethnic groups. 3) To determine the distribution of interleukin-1 genotype polymorphisms of IL-1Band IL-1A in both ethnic groups. 4) To evaluate the association ...
Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the surrounding tissues of the teeth. Also known as gum disease, it is caused by the buildup of plaque (a sticky film bacteria) and is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. It is difficult to know that you have it because its normally painless.. The beginning stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. This can cause red, swollen gums that bleed easily. If developed during early childhood, gingivitis increases in occurrence and severity in the early teenage years.. Plaque turns into tartar or calculus (a rough, porous substance) if it is not removed carefully with daily brushing and flossing. The bacteria in the plaque produce toxins that inflame the gums. These toxins, when left in place, cause the gums to break away or disconnect from the teeth so periodontal pockets are formed allowing more toxins and bacteria within the pockets. The pockets become deeper as the disease progresses causing the plaque to move beyond, damaging the bone that ...
In Europe, cirrhosis is responsible for 1-2% of all deaths and is the leading cause of liver transplantation.1,2 Periodontitis is a bacterially induced inflammatory disease that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, characterised by the deepening of periodontal pockets due to loss of connective tissue attachment and bone. Untreated, periodontitis may result in tooth loss. Periodontitis is prevalent in the adult population, with over 35% having periodontitis and 10-15% having severe forms of the disease.3,4 Several studies have assessed the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases, cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and respiratory diseases, and an increasing number of studies have suggested that periodontitis may affect the course of systemic diseases.5 Poor oral health and periodontitis are very frequent in patients with cirrhosis.5 In addition, studies have suggested that periodontitis is involved in the progression of liver diseases, and that it ...

Periodontal disease and gingivitis The tooth provides a surface for the colonization of a diverse array of bacterial species. Bacteria may attach to the tooth itself, to the epithelial surfaces (surface-lining tissue) of the gingiva or periodontal pocket, to underlying connective tissues, if exposed, and to other bacteria attached to these surfaces. In contrast to the outer surface of most parts of the body, the outer layers of the tooth do not shed, and thus microbial colonization (accumulatio…

If plaque and tartar is left on the teeth, it provides the right conditions for bacteria to thrive. The bacteria irritate the gums, which means that they are inflammed hence tend to bleed easily. You may notice this if you are brushing your teeth, or eating, and sometimes your gums may bleed a bit. This is the early stage of gum disease called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your dentist or hygienist will clean your teeth by scaling and polishing them. They may also recommend an antiseptic mouthwash containing chlorhexidine and show you how to brush and floss your teeth effectively. Most adults have some degree of gum disease.. If gingivitis not treated and nothing is done about it, the inflammation will work its way down towards the foundations of the tooth causing a periodontal pocket leading to Periodontitis. Again, within the confines of the pocket, the conditions are such that the bacteria can cause more damage.. Gum disease can break down the support (bone) structures of the teeth, ...

While lasers still seem like science fiction, theyve been used commercially (and medically) for decades. But theres still room for growth in practical applications with this developing technology. One promising area is in the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease.. Gum disease is a bacterial infection triggered by plaque, a thin film of bacteria and food particles caused by inadequate oral hygiene. The disease is highly destructive and can eventually lead to both tooth and bone loss. Treatment procedures vary widely, but they all have the same goal: remove the offending plaque and calculus (tartar) from tooth and gum surfaces. Without plaque the infection subsides and the gums can heal.. For decades now, dentists have removed plaque and calculus manually with special hand instruments or ultrasonic equipment. If the disease has advanced below the gum line or formed deep voids filled with infection called periodontal pockets, the dentist may also employ surgical techniques to access the ...

Microbeads: the conversation continues On August 13th, in collaboration with Procter & Gamble, we published a post dealing with the safety of microbeads found in toothpaste. We received numerous interesting and important comments to the post; and despite reasurances that these are safe particles (by Health Canada), many dentists are still questioning the use of these microbeads: I have been finding these specs of blue plastic stuck in my patients periodontal pockets and embedded in their gingiva. Even if they are inert, having these particles embedded in soft tissue could cause inflammation and irritation. It is possible to assume if they are embedding in the mouth they also embed in the folds of the digestive tract. Therefore, I have been advising patients to avoid toothpastes with these ingredients. I am interested to hear if others have had similar findings. What is your take on the issue? Share your opinion with us. Email us at [email protected] ...
