NSAIDs May Prevent the Development of Colorectal Cancer after Polyp Removal This post focuses on a recent study published in the British Medical Journal that suggests that NSAIDs may help prevent colorectal cancer after polyp removal - This post goes into more detail on the study. Frank Magliochetti Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may prevent the recurrence of advanced neoplasia, a type of polyp that is the precursor of colorectal cancer, after the surgical removal of pre-existing polyps. Recurrence rates of benign polyps and advanced neoplasia are quite high, so clinicians are eager to find easy-to-follow treatments to reduce recurrence. A team of scientists from across the United States recently collaborated with Mayo Clinic researchers to determine how well NSAIDs, aspirin and other supplements prevent the recurrence of precancerous or cancerous polyps. The results of the study, published in the British medical journal BMJ suggest NSAIDs may offer the greatest ...

Printed articles increasingly rely on online supplements to store critical scientific information, but such data may eventually become unavailable. We checked the current availability of online supplementary scientific information published in six top‐cited scientific journals (Science, Nature, Cell, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA). Here we show that in 4.7% and 9.6% of articles with online supplementary material, some of the supplements became unavailable within 2 and 5 years of their publication, respectively.-Evangelou, E., Trikalinos, T. When I consider my child, any difference in control and thus reduction in risk is appreciable. Furthermore, this study does not take into account the emotional effect of diabetes and the flexibility that the pump can provide. Yes this might be achieved with MDI, but at the price of a lower quality of life. ,P, To study the pump, establish an increased ability to control glycemic levels and still reserve it for special problems is absurd! Its clear to me that most likely none ...

Francesca Minerva, a philosopher and medical ethicist, argues a young baby is not a real person and so killing it in the first days after birth is little different to aborting it in the womb.. In an article, published by the British Medical Journal group, Francesca Minerva states that even a healthy baby could have its life snuffed out if the mother decides she cant afford to look after it.. The journals editor has defended the piece, saying the publications role is to present well-reasoned arguments, rather than promote one particular moral view.. But the article has angered other ethicists, peers and campaigners. They have described the call for legalized infanticide as chilling and an inhumane defense of child destruction.. Dr. Francesca Minerva has received death threats and hate calls telling her that she will burn in hell, and she said the last few days since publication have been the worst of my life.. Writing in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Dr. Francesca Minerva and co-author ...

We are pleased to report the continued increase of the Impact Factors of MDPI journals in 2009 (see Table 1 and Figure 1). As noted in a similar Editorial published in June 2009, the Impact Factors of MDPI journals have been steadily recovering since the inception of the full Open Access publishing policy in early 2007 [1]. We are pleased to see that all journals now have an Impact Factor much higher than 1. In 2011 the Journal Citation Report (JCR) will include the first official Impact Factor of Entropy , and in 2012, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health will be included for the first time. Nevertheless, we are already able to compute a preliminary impact factor of approximately 1.4 for Entropy [2]. [...]

New England Journal of Medicine. Ill give you an example. This is the New England Journal of Medicine....Eighty-three percent of its revenues comes from drug advertising. What do you think this costs? Eighty-three percent of its revenues comes from drug advertising. In addition to that, the very highly touted drug called Mevacore, lovastatin, is a drug that lowers cholesterol. Now, this is my opinion: The purpose of Mevacore is to allow Joe Six-Packs to eat his Twinkies and Ding Dongs and not worry about his cholesterol. You are not going to get very much about diet control in this journal because Mevacore doesnt want it. You know, Merck, Sharp, and Dohme doesnt like diet control because obviously diet control cuts their profits. So, this is simply a trade journal. Thats what its all about. Its a nice one. I like it. But its not a credible journal. Its not really good science, but its fun to read. Kind of like National Enquirer.--Dr Levin MD [1993 Interview with Dr. Alan Levin.] ...

The publishing industry has been turned on its head since the advent of the Internet. In the last 10 years, hundreds of newspapers and magazines have gone online or out of business. The sale of e-books has recently surpassed that of traditional books, and many readers now consume media on mobile devices, often in less than 140-character increments.. What many people dont realize is that a similar revolution is taking place in the world of academic publications. That is why the Sheridan Libraries, in conjunction with the Welch Medical Library, has created the Johns Hopkins Libraries Open Access Promotion Fund. The purpose of the fund is to reimburse faculty and staff for the fees that open access journals often charge authors to publish their research.. An authors fee is one of the newest funding mechanisms for what have come to be known as open access journals. Many traditional academic journals now have a significant online presence, funded through annual subscription fees. But a growing ...
The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a scientometric factor based on the yearly average number of citations on articles published by a particular journal in the last two years. In other words, the impact factor of 2020 is the average of the number of cited publications divided by the citable publications of a journal. A journal impact factor is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field. Normally, journals with higher impact factors are often deemed to have more influence than those with lower ones. However, the science community has also noted that review articles typically are more citable than research articles. (Read More: What is a good impact factor?). ...
