Looking for apical periodontitis? Find out information about apical periodontitis. Inflammation of the periodontium. an acute or chronic inflammation of the periodontium and adjacent tissues. Periodontitis is usually a result of dental... Explanation of apical periodontitis
Apical periodontitis, an acute or chronic inflamination around the apex of the tooth, is caused by bacteria in the root canal. In Sweden the dentists devote around 10X of their total time to treating this disease. The treatment usually requires 3 to 5 sessions. The treatment may fail in up to 25X of the cases. In the present study various treatment regimens were evaluated. One hundred and forty singlerooted teeth with apical periodontitis were treated. The importance of mechanical instrumentation, irrigating solutions and antibacterial dressings in eliminating bacteria from the infected root canals was studied using bacteriological techniques. The healing of the apical periodontitis after treatment was followed for 2 to 5 years on recall radiographs.. Bacteria were found in all 140 root canals at the beginning of the treatment. Most of these bacteria were anaerobes and they represented a restricted group of bacteria compared to the bacteria present at other sites in the oral cavity. Mechanical ...

OBJECTIVE: To detect the distribution and expression levels of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) and the absent in Melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasomes in periapical lesions and to analyse the possible microbial stimuli outside of teeth.. DESIGN: The distribution of NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasomes in sixteen periapical lesions was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Meanwhile, the relative gene expression levels of NLRP3 and AIM2 in sixteen periapical lesions and three health periodontal tissue were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Moreover, forty-seven teeth without sinus tracts were obtained in the clinic and included in bacterial analysis using PCR. Then, the mRNA levels of apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC), caspase-1, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), NLRP3 and AIM2 in THP-1-derived macrophages treated with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of Porphyromonas were also quantified by real-time PCR, and the IL-1β secretion level was ...

My No 3 had a root canal and crown. There was a 3/16 Inch circle between the three roots on the X-ray, and a dark line, about 1/16 Inch long on the x-ray. There was another small circle at the tip of one of the roots of #3. I could feel sensitivity in my upper right jaw, when taking a steep step, or changing my head position abruptly. I slap the back of my head lightly, to guage my progress. #3 is the third from the back, upper jaw, Right side. Extraction was recommended. So I had the tooth extracted, and there was a 3/16 Inch diameter bag of a substance, between the three roots, the Oral ...
Researchers may have a way to turn the tables on harmful bacteria that infect humans, using tiny viruses cultivated from sewage. The result could help prevent infections after dental work like root canal.
New tools for activating endodontic irrigants have evolved, yet their impact on root canal disinfection, in comparison to the passive placing of an inter-visit medication, have not yet been fully elucidated. The use of DNA- and rRNA-based methods may cast some new light on this issue, as they allow a comparison to be made between microbial presence and activity. Therefore, the aim of this single-arm intervention trial is to evaluate the antibacterial effect of endodontic procedures using both molecular methods. Root canal samples were obtained from 20 patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis after each treatment step: access cavity, chemo-mechanical preparation, adjunctive procedures (XP-endo Finisher file and passive ultrasonic irrigation), calcium hydroxide medication, and 2nd-visit root canal preparation. DNA and cDNA from the samples were subjected to quantitative polymerase chain reaction with universal primers for the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Chemo-mechanical preparation promoted a drastic
Every year, drug-resistant infections kill hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Now, researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalems Faculty of Dental Medicine propose a way to turn the tables on harmful bacteria that infect humans, by infecting them with tiny viruses called bacteriophages. In a strange twist, one such virus, cultivated from Jerusalem sewage, may help prevent infections following dental procedures.

Apical periodontitis is typically the bodys defense response to the threat of microbial invasion from the root canal. Primary among the members of the host defense mechanism is the polymorphonuclear leukocyte, otherwise known as the neutrophil. The task of the neutrophil is to locate and destroy microbes that intrude into the body - anywhere in the body - and they represent the hallmark of acute inflammation. In response to tissue injury, neutrophils leave the circulatory system in great numbers and gather at the site of tissue injury. They are drawn to the site by chemotaxis, following a concentration gradient of chemotactic molecules until they reach the site of greatest concentration: the site of injury and microbial presence. Once there, the antimicrobial action of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, derived from the metabolic processes of the neutrophils, act to combat the microbial invasion. While primarily mobilized to kill the invading microorganisms, the neutrophils actually cause a ...

A total of thirty-seven Candida albicans isolates from root canal infections in a Finnish population were subtyped using phenotypic and genotypic methods. A previously described biotyping method based on the presence of five different enzymes, assimilation of eleven different carbohydrates and boric acid sensitivity of the yeasts was used to determine the phenotype. Commercially available API ZYM and API 20 C test kits were used to determine the presence of enzymes and assimilation of carbohydrates. The sensitivity of the isolates to boric acid was tested by their ability to grow on yeast-nitrogen-agar with incorporated boric acid (1.8 mg · ml-1). Combination of the tests revealed a total of 14 different phenotypes. The majority of the isolates, 26 strains, were classifiable into three major phenotypes: 16 isolates (43.2%) belonged to phenotype A1R, six (16.2%) to A1S and four (10.8%) to B1S. The remaining 11 phenotypes represented only a single isolate each. The randomly amplified polymorphic ...
Objective: We previously reported that TLR4 signal, which is triggered by Gram-negative bacteria, mediates infection-induced periapical bone loss. Although TLR2 triggers inflammation in response to Gram-positive bacteria, the role of TLR2 in periapical inflammation is still unclear. In the present study, we determined the functional role of TLR2 signal in polymicrobial infection-induced periapical bone loss using TLR gene deficient (-/-) mice. Method: TLR2-/-, TLR2/TLR4-/-, and C57BL/6 (WT) mice were employed. The dental pulps of the first molars were exposed and infected with a mixture of Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Peptostreptococcus micros, and Streptococcus intermedius. Mice were sacrificed on days 0 (non-infected control) and 21 after pulpal infection. The extent of periapical bone loss was determined using micro computed tomography. Thioglycolate-elicited peritoneal macrophages were isolated from the mice above and stimulated with or without E. coli LPS (1µg/ml) and ...

Why would I need Endodontic Surgery?. Surgery can help save your tooth in a variety of situations.. Surgery may be used in diagnosis. If you have persistent symptoms but no problems appear on your x-ray, your tooth may have a tiny fracture or canal that could not be detected during non-surgical root canal treatment. In such a case, surgery allows us to examine the root of your tooth, find the problem and provide the necessary treatment.. Sometimes calcium deposits make a canal too-narrow for the cleaning and shaping instruments used in non-surgical root canal treatment to reach the end of the root. If your tooth has this "calcification", we may perform endodontic surgery to clean and seal the remainder of the canal.. Usually, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can last the rest of your life and never need further endodontic treatment. However, in a few cases, a tooth may fail to heal. The tooth may become painful or diseased months or even years after successful treatment. If this is true ...
Dental caries and tooth injuries are the main causes of pulp inflammation in primary teeth. In cases of irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis, radical endodontic treatment is indicated, the aim of which is to avoid premature tooth loss and prevent harm to the tooth bud of the permanent successor [1-4].. Chronic periapical periodontitis is the major cause of the premature loss of primary teeth and it is widely accepted that this condition is related to endodontic infection [5]. The use of handheld files and irrigating solutions with disinfectant properties is currently the most common form of endodontic treatment. However, the existence of residual bacteria in many cases can lead to further infection of the root canal, which requires re-treatment or even extraction [3, 4, 6].. Pulp therapy in primary teeth is a complex matter due to difficulties in using dental instruments, the complexity of the apical delta, the biological cycle of primary teeth, physiological resorption and rhizolysis as well ...
CONSERVATIVE ENDODONTIC TREATMENT OF PERMANENT TEETH WITH PERIAPICAL LESIONS : CASE REPORTS - Periapical lesion;Conservative pulp treatment;MTA(Mineral Trioxide Aggregate);
As a consequence of pulp exposure to the oral cavity, the root canal system acquires the ability to harbor bacteria and their byproducts. Because of its location, general lack of collateral circulation, and its low compliance (Van Hassel 1971; Heyeraas 1989), the pulp does not have the ability to defend itself against the invading bacteria. Sooner or later the bacterial infection will spread throughout the root canal system and the bacteria and/or bacterial byproducts will diffuse from the root canal into the periradicular tissues with resultant development of a periradicular lesion.. To show the importance of bacteria in pathogenesis of pulp and periradicular diseases, Kakehashi et al. (1966) exposed the dental pulps of conventional and germ-free rats to their oral flora. Pulpal and periapical lesions were developed in conventional rats. In contrast, they were absent in germ-free rats. (Fig. 1.7). Möller and associates (1981) sealed sterile and contaminated dental pulps in the root canals of ...

Procedure - Radiographs obtained before surgery, immediately after surgery, and during follow-up examinations after surgery were evaluated by 2 individuals. Treatment was considered successful if the periodontal ligament space was normal and possible preoperative root resorption, if present, had ceased. Treatment was considered to show no evidence of failure if possible preoperative root resorption had ceased but a preexisting periapical lesion had remained the same or only decreased in size and not complete resolved. Treatment was considered to have failed if a periapical lesion or root resorption developed subsequent to endodontic treatment, if a ...

Results: 62.3% of the examined teeth demonstrated AP. The number of root-filled teeth and the prevalence of AP were found to be higher in OPGs taken between 1995 and 2001 than those taken between 2002 and 2008. Both the quality of the coronal restoration and the quality of the root filling (length and lateral seal) were found to be correlated with the presence of AP, but the factor most significantly associated seemed to be the coronal restoration (OR = 0.404, 95% CI: 0.174-0.940 ...

Our dental office is unique in that we are pioneering a new therapy to relieve pain and inflammation. Inflammation in the teeth and gums is the most serious of dental conditions, as it can spread infection to other locations in the body and lead to serious disease. For years, physicians, chiropractors, osteopaths, and acupuncturists have used low-level amounts of electrical current to reduce areas of inflammation in the body.. Dr. Chalmers is in the process of developing the protocol for a similar therapy system to reduce swelling, bruising, and pain in post-surgery dental patients. One major use would be to reduce difficult-to-access root canal infections that, when left untreated, can damage other parts of the body. This therapy could also be used to heal pain and inflammation that occurs in some patients when wearing braces.. ...
