S. aureus and P. aeruginosa biofilms were cultured at 35 °C for 7 days with catheter tubes. The following high-level disinfectants (HLDs) were tested: 0.3% PAA, 0.55% ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), and 2.0% alkaline-buffered glutaraldehyde (GA). Biofilms were exposed to these agents for 1-60 min and observed after 5 min and 30 min by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A Students t test was performed to compare the exposure time required for bactericidal effectiveness of the disinfectants. A description is given of work undertaken to develop a simple, specific, and reliable method for ozone. Reactions of ozone with several 1-alkenes were studied at room temperature (25C). Eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxy phenol), when reacted with ozone, was found to produce relatively large amounts of formaldehyde as compared to other 1-alkenes tested. The method described was compared with alkaline iodide method for the determination of various concentrations of ozone in the range of 0.05 to 2.0 ppm. The reactions of ozone with eugenol were found to yield stoichiometric amounts of formaldehyde. Hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, sulfur dioxide and various reducing agents commonly present in the air, do not interfere with the method. Cellulose is an inexpensive, renewable, bio-based and an abundant raw material suitable for the development of filter membranes for water purification. This is because it has numerous functional groups that afford ease of modification to create active surfaces upon chemical modification. In this study, cellulose was isolated from two abundant biomasses, namely, Eichhornia crassipes and Cyperus papyrus using the soda process followed by bleaching with peracetic acid. The percent yield of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) obtained from E. crassipes and C. papyrus was found to be 31.64 ± 1.46% and 29.55 ± 0.64% respectively. The degree of crystallinity and crystal sizes were calculated to be 71.42% and 0.059 nm for E. crassipes and 46.15% and 0.068 nm for C. papyrus respectively. This study investigated the dispersal potential of the nitric oxide (NO) donor compound, PROLI NONOate, on single species biofilms formed by bacteria isolated from industrial membrane bioreactor and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, as well as on mixed species biofilms. The potential of PROLI NONOate to control RO membrane biofouling was also examined. Confocal microscopy revealed that different bacteria responded differently to PROLI NONOate exposure. However, the addition of NO induced dispersal in all but two of the bacteria tested and successfully reduced mixed species biofilms.
