Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a nitrate ester, is widely used as a powerful explosive and is classified as a munitions constituent of great concern by DoD in U.S.A. It is an environmental concern and poses a threat to ecosystem and human health. Our objective was to examine potential remediation strategies for both PETN-contaminated water and soil. Flow-through iron columns were used to determine the potential for using granular iron to degrade PETN in aqueous phase. PETN transformation in both a 100% iron column and a 30% iron and 70% silica sand column followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with average half-lives of 0.26 and 1.58 minutes, respectively. Based on the identified intermediates and products, the reaction pathway was proposed to be a sequential denitration process, in which PETN was stepwisely reduced to pentaerythritol with the formation of pentaerythritol trinitrate (PETriN) and pentaerythritol dinitrate (PEDN). PETN is one of the most dangerous plastic explosives which is available in black market, and belongs to the same family as nitroglycerin. It is preferred by militant groups because it cannot be easily detected owing to its colourless crystals. Majority of explosive detectors use metal detectors, but PETN can be kept hidden in a sealed container or an electrical equipment and thus can easily surpass security checks. The dog squad failed to detect the explosive that was found by the cleaning staff on July 12, the chief minister said. Several countries have severe restrictions on purchase of PETN which can be bought in powder form or thin plastic sheet. The substance is legally used by the military and in mining industries where it is used in detonators for detonating cords and mines. PETN can be mixed with other chemicals to form Semtex. There are problems with trying to modify ones NO status via diet, in general it doesnt work long term, at least not by any methods that have been tried. There is a non-dietary method I am working on, but it isnt generally accepted yet. Methods that dont work include so-called NO donors (such as nitroglycerine which isnt really an NO donor but it has some NO-donor-like properties and other organic nitrates) they cause what is called nitrate resistance. Amyl nitrite does cause acute NO effects and is sometimes used as a sexual stimulant (don t confuse with amyl nitrate). Long term or chronic use would cause nitrate resistance. L-arginine causes arginine resistance. This is thought to be due to generation of potent inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase by physiology, the various methyl arginines. Phosphoric acid was reacted with pentaerythritol, then with melamine, then with bismuth oxide (Bi2O3, 10% w/w) and additional melamine. The resulting PPMS-Bi [1], and also PPMS (not reacted with bismuth) was tested as a PIN flame retardant in epoxy - polyamide (2:1) resin at FR loadings of 20 - 40%. The neat resin was not rated under UL94, whereas with 30% PPMS or 30% PPMS-Bi a rating V0 (4 mm) was achieved. Peak heat release was reduced by around 75% with 40% PPMS, and by around 85% with 40% PPMS-Bi. Smoke density was around 30% lower with PPMS-Bi than with PPMS only, and was also lower with PPMS-Bi than with PPMS and bismuth oxide added separately to the resin.
