Pale Penstemon (Penstemon pallidus)
Faunal Associations: The flowers of Pale Penstemon are cross-pollinated primarily by long-tongued bees, including honeybees, bumblebees, little carpenter bees (Ceratina spp.), and mason bees (Hoplitis spp., Osmia spp.); see Crosswhite & Crosswhite (1966) and Clinebell & Bernhardt (1998). A mason bee, Osmia distincta, is an oligolege (specialist pollinator) of Penstemon spp. These insects obtain nectar and/or pollen from the flowers. Short-tongued Halictid bees also visit the flowers for pollen. Other insects feed destructively on the foliage, flowers, or fruits of Penstemon spp. These species include the caterpillars of such moths as the Chalcedony Midget (Elaphria chalcedonia), Saunders Sallow Moth (Sympistis saundersiana), and a stem-gall forming Gracillariid moth (Caloptilia murtfeldtella); see Covell (1984/2005), Panzer et al. (2006), and the Microleps website (2010). A polyphagous aphid, Abstrusomyzus phloxae, sucks sap from these plants (Blackman & Eastop, 2013). Generally, most mammalian ...

Penstemon digitalis - Wikipedia
Like other Penstemon species, it is used in roadside planting because it is easily grown and showy.[3] It is recommended for easy use in gardens from the Midwest to the Atlantic coast and Pacific Northwest by the American Penstemon Society.[7] Iowas Living Roadway Profiler from the Iowa Department of Transportation says that the plants decorative seed capsules add interest in the fall and winter.[3] One of the plants cultivars is named Husker Red because of its red foliage that has white or bluish-pink flowers. The Perennial Plant Association chose the Husker Red cultivar of Penstemon digitalis as the 1996 Perennial Plant of the Year. The author of the book Perennial All-Stars described Husker Red as a stunning flowering perennial and that you can easily see why the Perennial Plant Association chose this perennial above all others. Husker Red was named after the Nebraska Cornhuskers.[8] The other cultivar, Mystica, is green at first and then later changes to red in the fall.[7] There is ...

Elk Lake News - Life at a Montana Mountain Lodge
Blue Penstemon. Things I Already Knew: Another blue flower which seems to thrive in the meadows around Elk Lake. I must admit, I didnt know there were so many varieties. Now Im glad I took the extra pictures!. Things I Recently Learned: Growing on a smooth 12 to 26 inch stem, Blue Penstemon has different leaves on the lower and upper stem. The lower leaves are basal while the upper are stalkless and clasp the stem (as seen in my photo).. A member of the Figwort Family (and a relative to the Penstemon above), Blue Penstemon grows in the open plains and foothills of southwest and south-central Montana.. Native to Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, this plant is a perennial. Like other penstemons, it is cultivated for its ornamental qualities. Well, blue seems to be the color of the day (or the blog, in this case). It certainly isnt because Im blue. Maybe its the bright sunshine and blue skies. Or, more likely, its because Im finally getting these photos organized a bit, and, as I put them into ...
Mara Kack
By Mara Kack Palmers Penstemon (Penstemon palmeri) is delightful. The white to pink flowers are in clusters on tall, upright flower stalks. The individual flowers are large-mouthed with two upper lobes and three magenta-lined lower lobes that curve downward. Flower spikes can be 4-5 feet in height and bear many flowers. Have you noticed tall spikes of white to pink flowers in April or May along roadsides? Most likely, you saw Palmers Penstemon. If you sniff a flower, youll be rewarded with an exquisite rose-like fragrance. This explains another common name, scented penstemon. Flowers of Palmers Penstemon attract hummingbirds, bumblebees, carpenter bees, and digger bees. Flower visitors like hummingbirds who collect nectar are usually better for a flowers health, because no pollen is consumed. Hummingbirds forage for nectar and inadvertently transfer pollen from one flower to another on their foreheads. Some floral visitors, like bumblebees, actively collect pollen to feed to their ...
Turning pretty penstemon flowers from blue to red | EurekAlert! Science News
While roses are red, and violets are blue, how exactly do flower colors change?
In the case of penstemons, with over 200 species to choose from, scientists Carolyn Wessinger and Mark Rausher have now shown that turning their flowers from blue to red involves knocking out the activity of just a single enzyme involved in the production of blue floral pigments.

If you dont carry a ruler you can use a quarter which is an inch in diameter. Although flowers may be easy to measure, the size often varies. Botanical descriptions often do not include the flower size so some of our size information may be wrong. When a plant has clusters of small flowers you should measure the size of a flower even though it may be very small. Many plants have flowers that are not obvious and in that case we put them in the Very Small category ...

I headed straight up past the first outcrop to just before next opening. Here I turned right and headed down through the open woods, pretty much due west, following the least steep incline. I quickly popped out into the west meadow just above the wonderful rocky dikes. No great view of the valley this time, just a blanket of fog, its fingers creeping up the ridges below me. There was still some seed left in the numerous larger patches of Penstemon rupicola and Saxifraga bronchialis growing on the steep sides of the rocks. Some of the mats of Penstemon were three feet wide. They must have been glorious in bloom. What with the cold spring we had, I was too early to see them in flower this year on my previous trip in June, normally their peak season. Growing on top of the rocks were little tufts of Minuartia rubella. Most of the seeds were already gone, but there were at least three plants with a few fresh flowers. Considering how rarely I see this little cutie, it was quite a coincidence that this ...

Click here to view a drawing of Calliope Hummingbird. By Elizabeth Hacker. Summer has turned to fall. As the temperatures drop and leaves turn to gold, I m still savoring that warm summer day when a calliope hummingbird appeared in my flower garden. It was so small that its entire head was buried inside a penstemon floret while its tiny tail was twittering away.. The calliope is a pollinator that draws nectar from a plant while helping the plant to reproduce. It is the smallest breeding bird in North America and the smallest avian migrant in the world. According to most bird books, it is a species common to the Pacific Northwest, and yet it s not uncommon to see them here. For the past few years, it has also been reported in several Southern states and as far north as upstate New York, which means the calliope s range is expanding.. It prefers the high mountainous regions of the Rockies. I observed one while hiking Shrine Pass at about 11,000 feet. I have only had fleeting glances of it on a few ...

Planting up Fuchsia Baskets and Penstemon
I added the new small fuchsias I bought at the garden center to my hanging fuchsia baskets this past weekend. I have one established fuchsia in each basket and wanted to build on the baskets. I matched similar colors for each fuchsia basket, white and pink with pink, lavender with purple and pink and lavender with pink fuchsias. The fuchsia baskets have trailing blue lobelia cascading down the front of each basket. The trailing blue lobelia tends to be very full, not exactly what I originally wanted in the baskets since I would prefer the lobelia lie flatter but it still looks good overall. Some of the fuchsia baskets have blooming flowers while others are working up towards blooming. Here on the coast even though it is officially summer all blooming tends to be a month or two out from the blooming patterns of typical summer blooming in Sonoma County. Basically its still early on for fuchsia blooms as they are just getting started here on the north coast ...

A bit northeast of Thamesville is a prairie patch along a railway. Fortunately it is right at a road intersection, so it is easily accessible. I use the term prairie loosely here, as the prairie vegetation is made up mostly of forbs...there are virtually no prairie grasses present, some of which should be there if it is really a prairie. Some of the prairie plant highlights known from this site include Yellow Ladies-tresses (Spiranthes ochroleuca) and Prairie Cinquefoil (Potentilla arguta). Unfortunately neither have been seen in recent years, although they could still be present. The time of my visit was a little early for the former species, and a little late for the latter one. Ground-water quality in the carbonate-rock aquifer of the Great Basin, Nevada and Utah, 2003
The carbonate-rock aquifer of the Great Basin is named for the thick sequence of Paleozoic limestone and dolomite with lesser amounts of shale, sandstone, and quartzite. It lies primarily in the eastern half of the Great Basin and includes areas of eastern Nevada and western Utah as well as the Death Valley area of California and small parts of Arizona and Idaho. The carbonate-rock aquifer is contained within the Basin and Range Principal Aquifer, one of 16 principal aquifers selected for study by the U.S. Geological Surveys National Water- Quality Assessment Program.Water samples from 30 ground-water sites (20 in Nevada and 10 in Utah) were collected in the summer of 2003 and analyzed for major anions and cations, nutrients, trace elements, dissolved organic carbon, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, radon, and microbiology. Over the last few hundred years, they have adapted to some of the most inhospitable regions of our vast Northwestern rangelands, challenged by terrain, weather and persecuted as tresspassers by livestock ranchers. On December 28, 2009, helicopters penetrated the remote and pristine high desert and almost 2000 wild horses were chased, captured and scattered to government holding facilities. Resource Global Network | Winchester Energy
Since RGN last spoke to Winchester Energy the Australian oil and gas junior has been busy developing its position in one of the most bounteous oil basins in the US, the gigantic Permian Basin stretching across Texas and New Mexico, along with further building its board and management team. ASX-listed Winchester was formed in 2014 and quickly snapped up 17,400 net acres in the Permian, a bold and unprecedented move for a junior cap company in the middle of the lowest global oil prices seen in at least a decade. Winchesters acreage in the Permians Eastern shelf provides a multitude of conventional and unconventional oil targets from two ancient formations, which have been subject to extensive drilling in the last year. The companys activity thus far has resulted in eight producing wells, operating at varying rates from just a couple of barrels per day (bpd) up to 200 bpd, with a view to completing further drilling on the wells to provide a more uniform overall output.
