Pelger-Huet Anomaly (PHA) was first reported in the late 1920s and early 1930s and is characterized by hyposegmentation of nuclei and abnormal chromatin organization in blood granulocytes (Pelger, K Ned T Geneesk 72:1178, 1928; Huet, G.H. Maandschr. Kindergeneesk 1:173, 1932). Data suggest PHA is a due to a deficiency of the lamin B receptor protein within the nuclear membrane (Hoffman et al. 2002). The abnormal neutrophils found in PHA patients are reported to function properly (Johnson et al. 1980), but severe (homozygous) forms of the disease may be accompanied by mental retardation and skeletal anomalies including disproportionate body stature, macrocephaly, ventricular septal defect, and short fingers (Hoffman et al. 2002). A related disorder, Hydrops-ectopic calcification-moth-eaten (HEM) or Greenberg skeletal dysplasia is characterized by a phenotype similar to that found in severe forms of PHA and may also present with fetal hydrops and abnormal chondro-osseous calcification often ...

Pelger-Huët anomaly (pronunciation: [pel′gər hyo̅o̅′ət]) is a blood laminopathy associated with the lamin B receptor. It is characterized by a white blood cell type known as a neutrophil whose nucleus is hyposegmented.[citation needed] It is a genetic disorder with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Heterozygotes are clinically normal, although their neutrophils may be mistaken for immature cells which may cause mistreatment in a clinical setting. Homozygotes tend to have neutrophils with rounded nuclei that do have some functional problems.[citation needed] Is a benign dominantly inherited defect of terminal neutrophil differentiation as a result of mutations in the lamin B receptor gene. The characteristic leukocyte appearance was first reported in 1928 by Karel Pelger (1885-1931), a Dutch Hematologist, who described leukocytes with dumbbell-shaped bilobed nuclei, a reduced number of nuclear segments, and coarse clumping of the nuclear chromatin. In 1931, Gauthier Jean Huet ...

Anomalies resembling Pelger-Huët anomaly that are acquired rather than congenital have been described as pseudo Pelger-Huët anomaly. These can develop in the course of acute myelogenous leukemia or chronic myelogenous leukemia and in myelodysplastic syndrome. It has also been described in Filovirus disease.[4]. In patients with these conditions, the pseudo-Pelger-Huët cells tend to appear late in the disease and often appear after considerable chemotherapy has been administered. The morphologic changes have also been described in myxedema associated with panhypopituitarism, vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, multiple myeloma, enteroviral infections, malaria, muscular dystrophy, leukemoid reaction secondary to metastases to the bone marrow, and drug sensitivity, sulfa and valproate toxicities[5] are examples. In some of these conditions, especially the drug-induced cases, identifying the change as Pelger-Huët anomaly is important because it obviates the need for further unnecessary testing ...
A less frequent but more serious indication of benzene toxicity is the finding in the peripheral blood of the so-called pseudo (or acquired) Pelger-Huet anomaly. In this anomaly many, or sometimes the majority, of the neutrophilic granulocytes possess two round nuclear segments - less often one or three round segments - rather than three normally elongated segments. When this anomaly is not hereditary, it is often but not invariably predictive of subsequent leukemia. However, only about two percent of patients who ultimately develop acute myelogenous leukemia show the acquired Pelger-Huet anomaly. Other tests that can be administered to investigate blood abnormalities are discussed below; however, such procedures should be undertaken by the hematologist ...

The discrimination against female photographers is unveiled by a world-reknown photographer. Walking us through her personal experience, Jill Greenberg explains the problem of only seeing the world from a mans perspective. Jill Greenberg is a working photographer and director whose work is built on a foundation of the study of drawing and painting, semiotics and art history. Insights gained as a working photographer, when directed back at her gallery work, allows for a deconstruction of the image politics at work in our culture where pictures have become the de facto universal language.

The client, a plaintiff in a high stakes dispute at the intersection of bankruptcy law, business litigation, and trust law, retained Greenberg Glusker as counsel on U.S. bankruptcy law issues. Alongside Singaporean lead counsel and corresponding experts on U.S. trust and estates law, Greenberg Glusker assisted with briefing and argument on U.S. bankruptcy law in the Singaporean trial and appellate court. The judgment, which was then affirmed on appeal, resulted in a finding that a trust valued at over $40M was beneficially owned by our client.. ...

Take Me Out is a bit like the drunk guy at the pub. Its not content to take on just one or two taboos in a night, instead it wants to take on a whole army of them, one after the other and often in quick succession, and with weaker impact each successive time. The context for this is the locker room for a baseball team. Initially the taboo of the gay-male-as-sports-star is explored, with some fine dramatic moments and a tight script. Then the play considers the identity of African Americans, and as one character wryly observes Baseball is the one area in life where white people will cheer for a black hero. Then the role of language is played out, with the isolation of the Latino and Japanese team members and their exclusion from the group. And finally the hillbilly, the backwards hick who has risen far above his station in life just by being a part of the team. Its a lot for a playwright to explore in a single play. But in the hands of Richard Greenberg, however, it looks effortless ...

Comments/Context: With the big shows at the New Museum last year and the Jewish Museum right now (both linked below), it would be easy to conclude that New York has had plenty of chances to get up to speed on the work of South African photographer David Goldblatt, and that therefore, this smaller gallery show (unbelievably, his first gallery show ever in New York) would be one to pass by. Think again. Rather than opting for aone of everything mini-retrospective selling show, Howard Greenberg has smartly chosen to focus on a single, tightly edited photographic project and show it in more depth. Its a compelling, self-contained body of work (no pun intended), highlighting the more intimate and personal side of Goldblatts photography ...

Three M syndrome 1 (3M1; MIM 273750) , 2 (3M2; MIM 612921) and 3 (3M3; MIM 614205) are autosomal recessive disorders characterized by pre- and postnatal growth retardation, large head circumference, and a characteristic facial appearance including a pointed triangular shaped face, frontal bossing, midface hypoplasia, a short upturned nose with anteverted nares and full lips. Additional findings include slender long bones, tall vertebral bodies, delayed bone age and prominent heels. Intracranial aneurysms have also been rarely reported. To date, mutations in the CUL7 (cullin 7), OBSL1 (obscurin-like 1) and CCDC8 (coiled-coil domain-containing protein 8) genes have been linked to 3M1, 3M2 and 3M3, respectively. There are no apparent phenotypic differences between patients with mutations in CUL7, OBSL1 or CCDC8. 3M1, gloomy face syndrome and Yakut short stature syndrome are allelic disorders. The product of CUL7 assembles an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex involved in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. ...

Solid para-H-2 is a promising gain medium for stimulated Raman scattering, due to its high number density and narrow Raman linewidth. In preparation for the design of a cw solid hydrogen Raman laser, we have made the first measurements, to our knowledge, of the index of refraction of a solid para-H-2 crystal, in the wavelength range of 430-1100 nm. For a crystal stabilized at 4.4 K, this refractive index is measured to be n(p-H2) 1.130 +/- 0.001 at 514 nm. A slight, but significant, dependence on the final crystal-growth temperature is observed, with higher n(p-H2) at higher crystal-growth temperatures. Once a crystal is grown, it can be heated up to 10 K with no change in n(p-H2). The refractive index varies only slightly over the observed wavelength range, and no significant birefringence was observed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America. ...

Impaired awareness or denial of ones disorder. A significant problem in several kinds of strokes and in neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is strikingly manifest when a person with a paralysed limb claims it is still functioning. [One of Professor Ramachandrans patients, who had suffered a stroke which had paralysed the left side of her body, refused to accept that her arm couldnt move. Even though lucid in every other aspect (including awareness of the fact that she had suffered a stroke) she claimed her left arm was carrying out tasks even though clearly it wasnt. An explanation may involve close analysis of the different roles of the left and right hemispheres of the brain.] ...

Organisms have needs ranging from mere survival through self-actualization (e.g., reproduction), frequently nested within each other such that more basic needs must be satisfied first. Among these needs, the continual working towards the maintenance of stability may be the highest priority. It is from this point of apparent self-organization that organisms (and other systems?) can most efficiently develop and grow and persevere in the face of change, both intrinsic change and change imposed by outside forces. CHANGE and CONSERVATISM. Animals attempt to maintain stability by compensating for internal and external change; this occurs at levels from chemistry through behavior, but different kinds of compensation occur at each level. Within the adaptive zone there is a characteristic breadth of activity within which only modest compensation is invoked.. ...
The answer, of course, was no. Moreover, individual libraries have always had items that were singular or rare, the Special Collections. For the scholar, travel has often been the only option for viewing these unique documents.. 3. Humanities on the Web. The Web allows us to rethink this model. It is here that the most exciting possibilities for scholars are to be found. This is not simply due to the ease with which digital documents, including graphics, sound and video can be created and stored. The Web allows for self-publishing, for timely dissemination of new materials and ideas, and for flexibility. It encourages synthesis and linking rather than duplication and rehashing. It allows for a depth, a richness not duplicated in other media or other models.. One year ago the number of humanities Web sites could be covered fairly comprehensively in a paper of this length. Today that is no longer possible. Indeed there are a substantial number of Web pages whose sole purpose is to collect lists of ...
