What are some good examples of negative peer pressure - Can peer pressure ever be good for my child? Depends on type. Certainly peer pressure to drink alcohol, do drugs, have sex, etc. Has very negative implications for the one being pressured or bullied. However, in other environments peer pressure can help kids stay away from these things and do better in school.
The use of peer-based recovery support has grown substantially in the last five years. However, given ongoing high rates of opioid overdose and addiction, another peer-based workforce has not received enough attention: peers who use drugs. Just as there is a long history of peers in recovery supporting peers seeking recovery, there is a similarly long history of drug-using peers helping one another stay safe and alive. This presentation describes a peer-based program that employs people who use drugs to distribute naloxone and sterile injection equipment in Pittsburgh, PA. It reviews basic harm reduction principles, the peer-based program model, and data on program effectiveness.. ...

A variety of public campaigns, including the "Just Say No" campaign of the 1980s and 1990s that encouraged teenagers to "Just Say No to Drugs", are based on the premise that teenagers are very susceptible to peer influences. Despite this, very little is known about the effect of school peers on the long-run outcomes of teenagers. This is primarily due to two factors: the absence of information on peers merged with long-run outcomes of individuals and, equally important, the difficulty of separately identifying the role of peers. This paper uses data on the population of Norway and idiosyncratic variation in cohort composition within schools to examine the role of peer composition in 9th grade on longer-run outcomes such as IQ scores at age 18, teenage childbearing, post-compulsory schooling educational track, adult labor market status, and earnings. We find that outcomes are influenced by the proportion of females in the grade, and these effects differ for men and women. Other peer variables ...
The provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in rural, resource-limited settings entails substantial challenges due to limitations in the health service infrastructure and in human resources for HIV/AIDS care. In addition, long geographical distances between providers, care facilities, and patients can represent a significant barrier to appropriate and timely care. The use of peer health workers as frontline adherence supporters and clinical monitors in order to improve care in underserviced settings has been implemented by a number of programs, but the effect of peer support on HIV care outcomes has not been extensively evaluated. Mobile phones have also been proposed as a potential method of improving access to health care in resource-limited environments by expediting communication and data transfer, but rigorous studies on their effectiveness in Africa have not yet been conducted.. Since 2000, peer-mediated interventions among female sex workers (FSW) in Mombasa Kenya have promoted behavioural change through improving knowledge, attitudes and awareness of HIV serostatus, and aimed to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (STI) by facilitating early STI treatment. Impact of these interventions was evaluated among those who attended peer education and at the FSW population level. A pre-intervention survey in 2000, recruited 503 FSW using snowball sampling. Thereafter, peer educators provided STI/HIV education, condoms, and facilitated HIV testing, treatment and care services. In 2005, data were collected using identical survey methods, allowing comparison with historical controls, and between FSW who had or had not received peer interventions. Over five years, sex work became predominately a full-time activity, with increased mean sexual partners (2.8 versus 4.9/week; P | 0.001). Consistent condom use with clients increased from 28.8% (145/503) to 70.4% (356/506; P |

Peer Support and Education Groups meet once a week and give women a fun way to talk about things that are important to them and their family. You can get answers to questions about almost anything. A lot of the activities are hands on and peer facilitated. Consumers gain facts about their health and wellness, how family health history and habits can influence them, how stress can affect the body, how the environment can affect their overall health, and so much more! Consumers are able to draw on the wisdom of their facilitator and in the same time develop their skills as facilitators or peer advocates. Since 2001 more than 3,000 women have attended the peer support groups and studies show that a a significant number of these women have learned a lot about the risk factors that affect their health, pregnancy, and the birth of a child. This study explored how peer deviant behavior and peer drug use differentially mediated the paths from unsupportive parenting to youth externalizing behavior and both the probability and extent of current drug use in a sample of Venezuelan youth. Models were further extended to test for group differences by gender and age. Results suggested that peer influences are domain specific among Venezuelan youth. That is, deviant peer behavior mediated the path from unsupportive parenting to youth externalizing behaviors, and peer drug use mediated the path to the drug use outcome. Mediation effects were partial, suggesting that parenting influenced the outcomes beyond its impact on affiliations with negative peers. Notable exceptions to the models were found when moderated by either gender or age. Implications for the development of screening tools and for formulating intervention programs targeting this age group are discussed.
As government policy moves towards a more transparent process of quality control in health care, emphasis on the education of doctors becomes greater. For those in non-training grades, this education is provided in the form of CPD. The response to this survey implies that the vast majority who need to register will already have registered, although staff grade doctors may be one possible area of concern. Owing to varying rates of return, results would appear to be generalisable for consultant staff but not necessarily for staff grades and associate specialists.. In psychiatry, CPD will be prospectively planned with the aid of a peer group. However, from this survey, under half of respondents thought peer groups alone should be involved in CPD planning, while over a quarter thought peer groups should not be involved at all. Of those rejecting peer groups for CPD planning, a majority thought another key individual should be involved, such as the medical director or lead consultant.. Regarding peer ...

A distributed computer system that enables end users to evaluate a brokers trade settlement performance by market and across multiple markets in terms of how many of the brokers trades failed. Trades are defined as having failed when the actual settle date exceeds the date on which the trade should have settled. The system analyzes trade settlement statistics about each broker within the context of a selected broker peer group, and ranks and compares a brokers settlement performance relative to the peer group. The system also ranks the brokers based on a set of metrics relative to the selected peer group. A brokers peer group is defined in terms of the brokers relative size within the trade universe as determined by trade count.

LIKE Lake Wobegon, Garrison Keillors fictitious Minnesota town where all the children are above average, executive compensation practices often assume that corporate managers are equally superlative. When shareholders question lush pay, they are invariably met with a laundry list of reasons that businesses use to justify such packages. Among that data, no item is more crucial than the peer group, a collection of companies that corporations measure themselves against when calculating compensation. |p| But according to a handful of pay experts who are privy to the design of pay practices at the nations largest corporations, many of these peer groups are populated with companies that are anything but comparable. They also say corporate managers themselves -- who have an interest in higher pay -- are selecting which companies make it into a peer group. And because these companies are often inappropriate for comparison purposes, their use has helped inflate executive pay in recent years. |p|
A total of 227 Index participants recruited 336 RNM. Retention of Index at 18-month follow-up exceeded 85%. Findings suggest that the experimental condition was efficacious at 18 months in reducing Index participant injection risk [odds ratio (OR) = 0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.18-0.77), drug-splitting risk (OR = 0.46; 95% CI = 0.25-0.88) and sex risk among Index (OR = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.34-0.86). Significant intervention effect on increased condom use among female RNM was observed (OR = 0.34; 95% CI = 0.18-0.62). Conclusions ...

This value is set only by the constructor.. In some cases, peer implementations access properties of the owner object in order to generate values that are reported by the peer. It is appropriate to make assumptions about the type of the owner control, if you also implement that control. In other words, if you are also creating the association between peer and control through implementation of OnCreateAutomationPeer(), then you have some influence over what Owner will be when the peer is created. However, peer implementers should also account for the possibility that derived controls will also access the peer associated with the base class through the default OnCreateAutomationPeer() implementation, without defining a new peer of their own. ...
The drive at the far entrance to the boys school, deep in the Pennsylvania countryside, snakes alongside large expanses of athletic fields and buildings, emptying at the quadrangle, the core of the campus.. Anchoring one end of the quadrangle is the porticoed red-brick administration building, its copper trim weathered to a greenish cast. At the other end stands a neo-Gothic stone chapel with stained-glass windows--built with the largess of the Smith Brothers of cough-drop fame.. Sporting backpacks, pairs of young men stroll along the sidewalks to their classes, taking care not to tread on the greens where purple martins birdhouses perch atop towering poles, forming a feathery metropolis of their own.. Downloadable! Using microdata on a sample of about 350 workers, employed at an Italian public institute, we explain individual absence rates both considering variables that may be related to health conditions and to variables that may suggest shirking behaviour. Among these variables we especially focus our attention on the influence produced by the behaviour of randomly assigned peers. To handle reflection problems we use the proportion of females in the peer group as instrument of peer absence behaviour. From Two-Stage least square estimates it emerges that social and group interactions play an important role in shaping individual absence behaviour.
Article: Bohannon, J. (2012). "Who Controls Social Networks?" sciencemag.org. Visited on Oct 9, 2012:http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2012/06/who-controls-social-networks.html This article is about how ideas spread in social groups through peer influence. A theory long debated is that a small number of people who are influencers spread ideas through their peer groups. Critics of the theory argue that is it not how much influence these people have but how susceptible to the new idea people are. The study of peer influence has proven difficult to conduct, but the rise of social networks such as Facebook provide a means for researchers to study a large number of people. One study in the article found that on Facebook there was a clear divide between influencers and those that were susceptible to new ideas. Conceptually, its important for any product developer to understand who their products influencers are if they wish their product to spread through peer influence. The article suggests ...

The sharing economy has been growing continuously in the last decade thanks to the proliferation of internet-based platforms that allow people to disintermediate the traditional commercial channels and to share excess resources and trade with one another effectively at a reasonably low transaction cost. Whereas early peer-to-peer platforms were designed to enable file sharing and goods trading, we recently witness the emergence of a new breed of peer-to-peer platforms that are designed for ordinary service sharing. Ordinary services entail in tangible provisions and are defined as an economic activity that generates immaterial benefits and does not result in ownership of material goods. Based on a structured analysis of 41 internet-based rideshare platforms, we explore and layout the unique characteristics of peer-to-peer service sharing platforms based on three distinct temporal patterns that entail specific consequences for platform use as well as provide insights about their overall design ...

According to the finding of a Gallup poll (July 1993) of students who have completed the D.A.R.E. program, more than 90 percent of those polled believe that the D.A.R.E. program provided them with the skills to avoid drugs, alcohol and violence. It further increased each students self-confidence in dealing effectively with negative peer pressure. Approximately 94 percent of those students surveyed indicated that they now know how to respond when a friend asks them to do something they dont want to do. In terms of personal behavior and attitudes toward drugs and alcohol, 93 percent of students surveyed reported they have never tried marijuana, cocaine, heroin, crack or inhalants. Seventy five percent stated they have never tried a cigarette; and 70 percent stated they have never tried alcohol. Perhaps most important, seven of ten students stated that alcohol use is very dangerous and more than nine of ten students believe drug use is very dangerous to their health and well-being.
