The use of peer-based recovery support has grown substantially in the last five years. However, given ongoing high rates of opioid overdose and addiction, another peer-based workforce has not received enough attention: peers who use drugs. Just as there is a long history of peers in recovery supporting peers seeking recovery, there is a similarly long history of drug-using peers helping one another stay safe and alive. This presentation describes a peer-based program that employs people who use drugs to distribute naloxone and sterile injection equipment in Pittsburgh, PA. It reviews basic harm reduction principles, the peer-based program model, and data on program effectiveness.. ...

Under Pressure? The Effect of Peers on Outcomes of Young Adults
A variety of public campaigns, including the Just Say No campaign of the 1980s and 1990s that encouraged teenagers to Just Say No to Drugs, are based on the premise that teenagers are very susceptible to peer influences. Despite this, very little is known about the effect of school peers on the long-run outcomes of teenagers. This is primarily due to two factors: the absence of information on peers merged with long-run outcomes of individuals and, equally important, the difficulty of separately identifying the role of peers. This paper uses data on the population of Norway and idiosyncratic variation in cohort composition within schools to examine the role of peer composition in 9th grade on longer-run outcomes such as IQ scores at age 18, teenage childbearing, post-compulsory schooling educational track, adult labor market status, and earnings. We find that outcomes are influenced by the proportion of females in the grade, and these effects differ for men and women. Other peer variables ...
Impact of Peer Health Workers and Mobile Phones on HIV Care - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
The provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in rural, resource-limited settings entails substantial challenges due to limitations in the health service infrastructure and in human resources for HIV/AIDS care. In addition, long geographical distances between providers, care facilities, and patients can represent a significant barrier to appropriate and timely care. The use of peer health workers as frontline adherence supporters and clinical monitors in order to improve care in underserviced settings has been implemented by a number of programs, but the effect of peer support on HIV care outcomes has not been extensively evaluated. Mobile phones have also been proposed as a potential method of improving access to health care in resource-limited environments by expediting communication and data transfer, but rigorous studies on their effectiveness in Africa have not yet been conducted.. Impact of five years of peer-mediated interventions on sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections among female sex...
Since 2000, peer-mediated interventions among female sex workers (FSW) in Mombasa Kenya have promoted behavioural change through improving knowledge, attitudes and awareness of HIV serostatus, and aimed to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (STI) by facilitating early STI treatment. Impact of these interventions was evaluated among those who attended peer education and at the FSW population level. A pre-intervention survey in 2000, recruited 503 FSW using snowball sampling. Thereafter, peer educators provided STI/HIV education, condoms, and facilitated HIV testing, treatment and care services. In 2005, data were collected using identical survey methods, allowing comparison with historical controls, and between FSW who had or had not received peer interventions. Over five years, sex work became predominately a full-time activity, with increased mean sexual partners (2.8 versus 4.9/week; P | 0.001). Consistent condom use with clients increased from 28.8% (145/503) to 70.4% (356/506; P |

Abstract. The study examined peer influence, rank and self-esteem as predictors of psychotherapeutic view of hostile behavior among police personnel working in Awka City. A total number of two hundred and twenty-two (222) police personnel served as participant for the study. They were selected using a non probability convenient random sampling. They consisted of 96 males and 126 female. Their age ranged from 22-51 years with mean age was 34.87 and standard deviation of 7.0. Instruments use to generate data for the study were; Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire by Buss-Perry (1992), Index of Peer Relation (IPR) by Hudson (1982), Validated by Anumba (1995) and Rosenbergs Self-Esteem (RSE) scale (1965). Multiple Linear Regression Statistics were used to analyze the data. Three hypotheses were tested. The result revealed that hypothesis one which state that peer influence will predict hostility behavior was accepted at f (β=.16, t = 2.5, p, .01), hypothesis two which state that rank will ...

Adolescents Judgments of Doubly Deviant Peers: Implications of Intergroup and Intragroup Dynamics for Disloyal and Overweight...
Group membership, loyalty, and weight are highly relevant for adolescent peer evaluations at school. This research tested how in-group/out-group membership affected judgments of peers who deviated from social norms for weight and loyalty. Two hundred and forty 11-13-year-olds (49 percent female; 94 percent Caucasian) judged two in-group or out-group peers: one was normative (loyal and average weight) and the other was non-normative (i.e., deviant). The deviant target was overweight, disloyal to their own group (school), or both (doubly deviant). Derogation of overweight relative to average weight peers was greater if they were in-group rather than out-group members, revealing a strong black sheep effect for overweight peers. Disloyal out-group deviants were judged favorably, but this effect was eliminated if they were doubly deviant, suggesting that their disloyalty was insufficient to overcome the overweight stigma. Consistent with developmental subjective group dynamics theory, effects ...

We know that one of the key purposes of play is socialization, says Katie Salen, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, who studies game design and learning. By around 3-years-old, kids begin to play productively with one another and engage in peer-based play, which helps kids learn how to make friends and interact with other people. Once they enter pre-adolescence, its very peer-based, she explains. The play and experimentation is very much rooted in the peer group and issues of exploring identity and friendship and belonging.. Efectos Diferenciales de Padres y Pares sobre la Externalización de Conductas y Consumo de Drogas - Cox 2014a - Scipedia
This study explored how peer deviant behavior and peer drug use differentially mediated the paths from unsupportive parenting to youth externalizing behavior and both the probability and extent of current drug use in a sample of Venezuelan youth. Models were further extended to test for group differences by gender and age. Results suggested that peer influences are domain specific among Venezuelan youth. That is, deviant peer behavior mediated the path from unsupportive parenting to youth externalizing behaviors, and peer drug use mediated the path to the drug use outcome. Mediation effects were partial, suggesting that parenting influenced the outcomes beyond its impact on affiliations with negative peers. Notable exceptions to the models were found when moderated by either gender or age. Implications for the development of screening tools and for formulating intervention programs targeting this age group are discussed.
Towards successful implementation of continuing professional development - a survey of psychiatrists attitudes | BJPsych...
As government policy moves towards a more transparent process of quality control in health care, emphasis on the education of doctors becomes greater. For those in non-training grades, this education is provided in the form of CPD. The response to this survey implies that the vast majority who need to register will already have registered, although staff grade doctors may be one possible area of concern. Owing to varying rates of return, results would appear to be generalisable for consultant staff but not necessarily for staff grades and associate specialists.. In psychiatry, CPD will be prospectively planned with the aid of a peer group. However, from this survey, under half of respondents thought peer groups alone should be involved in CPD planning, while over a quarter thought peer groups should not be involved at all. Of those rejecting peer groups for CPD planning, a majority thought another key individual should be involved, such as the medical director or lead consultant.. Regarding peer ...

In 2019, the CYD National Partnerships Field Building Action Team conducted interviews across the nation to understand the growth of peer learning networks-focused fully or in part on CYD-that are emerging across the country. The results were compiled in a brief written for the CYD National Partnership by Ellen Hirzy in January 2020:. Peer learning networks promote the sharing of knowledge, experiences, ideas, and promising practices among professionals. Whether formal or informal, they give people a chance to know others who are engaged in similar work with similar challenges. Close interaction with peers can be difficult to find in the nonprofit world, especially for those working in smaller organizations with limited resources. The mutual encouragement and professional growth that happens over time through a peer network can make a profound difference in individuals and their organizations, and ultimately in the youth they serve. Looking at the broader picture, as peer networks proliferate, ...
Peer Support in the Treatment of Chronic Pain in Adolescents: A Review of the Literature and Available Resources
Peer support has found applications beyond the mental health field and is useful for managing several chronic disorders and supporting healthy lifestyle choices. Communication through telephone and the Internet allows for greater access to those who cannot meet in person. Adolescent chronic pain would seem ideally suited to benefit from online peer support groups. Research is lacking, however, to characterize benefit in terms of pain and function, despite a clear desire among adolescents for access to such programs. More rapid development of online applications is needed for peer support, and research into the associated outcomes will be necessary to optimally design such programs ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - The Double Standard at Sexual Debut. T2 - Gender, Sexual Behavior and Adolescent Peer Acceptance. AU - Kreager, Derek A.. AU - Staff, Jeremy. AU - Gauthier, Robin. AU - Lefkowitz, Eva S.. AU - Feinberg, Mark E.. PY - 2016/10/1. Y1 - 2016/10/1. N2 - A sexual double standard in adolescence has important implications for sexual development and gender inequality. The present study uses longitudinal social network data (N = 914; 11-16 years of age) to test if gender moderates associations between adolescents sexual behaviors and peer acceptance. Consistent with a traditional sexual double standard, female adolescents who reported having sex had significant decreases in peer acceptance over time, whereas male adolescents reporting the same behavior had significant increases in peer acceptance. This pattern was observed net of respondents own perceived friendships, further suggesting that the social responses to sex vary by gender of the sexual actor. However, findings for making ...

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The workplace HIV and AIDS peer educators were recruited by the Department of Correctional Services in order to render education, awareness and preventative programmes to employees on HIV and AIDS. However, there is lack of endeavor that is being seen in these peer educators concerning the provision of the required services. The study investigated the factors inhibiting the implementation of workplace HIV and AIDS peer education programme of Durban Correctional System in order to identify areas that need strengthening so that intervention measures can ensure the success of the endeavour. Findings indicated the need of HIV and AIDS training of supervisors and line managers concerning the impact of HIV and AIDS in the workplace as well as the roles and responsibilities to be undertaken by them to combat the spread and effects of the epidemic hence management support and participation is regarded as a key intervention strategy in the management of HIV and AIDS. The study also ...
One of the gang? Peer relations among students with special educational needs in Irish mainstream primary schools | ESRI - The...
European Journal of Special Needs Education Internationally and in Ireland, the adoption of inclusive education frameworks have been broadly welcomed, particularly by parents of children with special educational needs (SEN). Mainstreaming these children is generally viewed as positive primarily because of the social factors associated with attending mainstream schools for children with SEN. Despite this commonly held view, there is increasing evidence to show that children with SEN have difficulties participating in mainstream environments. Using data from the Growing Up in Ireland study of 8,578 nine year olds, this paper examines whether peer relations differ among typically developing students and students with different types of SEN. We focus on the quantity and quality of peer relations using data on the childs number of friends and, using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the quality of relations with their peers. These measures are examined by controlling for a range of ...

Abstract: Children with autism experience deficits in social and communication skills compared to their typically developing peers. Quality parental behaviors during dyadic interactions and childrens expressive language ability could be important predictors of peer social competence during early childhood, especially for children with autism. This study examines the relations between parental behaviors, child expressive language ability, and peer social competence for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a comparison group of typically developing (TD) children. Secondary data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), a nationally representative longitudinal study following a sample of children born in the U.S. in 2001 from birth through kindergarten entry, were analyzed. Two subgroups of young children with and without a parent-reported diagnosis of autism were analyzed to understand the relative importance of parental behaviors and child expressive language ...

The dissertation is an initial investigation of a peer mentoring program in a suburban high school in the southeastern United States. Additionally, the Peer Mentoring Program (PMP) study examined whether the Program improves academic performance and attendance, and decreases referrals. Utilizing an experimental design, a Participant and a Nonparticipant group were compared based on archival summative data. The Participant group met with a 10th-12th grade assigned peer mentor, while the Nonparticipant group with equal group qualifications, did not. Quantitative analysis, resultant from an independent t-test and d effect size analysis for each inquiry, with further application of the Welch t test to the attendance data and the additional Mann-Whitney U test to the referrals data, provided interpretive results. Findings revealed the increased likelihood of the PMP to improve attendance. Findings further indicated the schools Peer Mentoring Program did not improve academic performance

Saúde Pública - The role of the neighborhood, family and peers regarding Colombian adolescents social context and aggressive...
Adjusting by individual-level confounding factors, the MSEM model showed deviant peer associations as being the greatest influence for both types of adolescent aggressive behaviour, followed by harsh discipline. By contrast, parental supervision and pro-social peers exerted a very important protective role, particularly against delinquent behaviour. Consistent with three-level Rasch model results, neighbourhood social processes did not predict adolescents aggressive behaviour. The left-hand side of the Figure shows that structural neighbourhood factors indirectly exerted their effect on aggression and delinquency by increasing the risk of poor parenting and greater deviant peer affiliation.. DISCUSSION. This paper has investigated pathways linking neighbourhood characteristics to individual-level aggression and delinquency. The significance of the indirect effects indicated that structural neighbourhood conditions were important for adolescents aggressive behaviour, given that although they ...

Generalized Anxiety Disorder - iWriteHomework
Peer delinquency is often associated with the development of juvenile delinquency. Some have even reported that peer deviance wholly mediates the relationship between parenting behaviors and adolescent delinquency (Chung & Steinberg, 2006). Multiple studies provide empirical support for the association between peer delinquency and increased delinquency (Fite et al., 2012; Taylor et al., 2000; Crnic & Greenberg, 2001), though the reason for this association is not clear. Potentially, peer encouragement to commit delinquent acts may result in increased delinquency (Mulder et al., 2011; Fossum et al., 2008). Conversely, some research has found that peer group norms that do not support physical aggression serve to reduce the effects of a genetic predisposition to develop aggressive behavior, further highlighting the importance of peer group on the development of antisocial behaviors (Brendgen et al., 2013; May & Beaver, 2014). In a study that examined the interactive effects between contextual risk ...
Special at school but lonely at home: An alternative friendship group for adolescents with Down syndrome
Friends play a significant role in mental and physical health; however, individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, even those who are included in general education programmes, have not developed friendships as hoped. After a decade of inclusion and structured school programmes to facilitate friendships, many parents report that peer relationships end after school hours. This study compared the efficacy of school based friendship groups with a mixed age home based group. Specific methods to establish a successful friendship group are discussed. This study followed three friendship groups for five years. Two groups of six to eight general education students met with the target student twice a month during the school day; one group of mixed age participants met in the students home. A counsellor facilitated all the groups. Parent and student concerns regarding friendships were informally assessed with interviews and observations. Observations and interviews confirmed that
The impact of intimate partner violence on preschool childrens peer problems: An analysis of risk and protective factors. |...
It is unclear whether there is variation in the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on child peer problems, and which individual and environmental factors might predict such variation. This study uses data from 7,712 children (3,974, 51.5% boys) aged 4 from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Children were cross-categorized based on exposure to IPV from birth to 3 years, and mother-rated peer problems at age 4, into 4 groups: Resilient, Non-resilient, Vulnerable and Competent. Between-group differences in maternal depression, maternal life events, parenting, attachment, and temperament were analyzed, and these variables were also examined as predictors of group membership. Girls were more likely to be identified as resilient. In contrast to the non-resilient group, resilient boys were less emotional, had more secure attachment to their mothers, more interaction with their mothers partner, and their mothers reported fewer life events. For girls, the resilient ...

IDEALS @ Illinois: Getting in sync: Exploring and supporting peer interaction in an autistic child with inconsistent access to...
Challenges in peer interaction are commonly associated with autism, both within research literature and through first-person accounts. Related intervention studies have tended toward a skills-based approach that emphasizes remediating perceived social deficits in the autistic individual, with most of the literature focusing on children who are classified as high functioning due to their verbal skills and/or typical IQ scores. Limitations in this skills-based approach have led to the development of a supports-based approach-based largely on a distributed model of communication-as an alternative way to facilitate peer interactions involving autistic students (Vidal, Robertson, & DeThorne, 2018). This supports-based approach prioritizes egalitarian interactions, participation in shared activities, and flexible access to multimodal communicative resources. The present mixed methods study was designed to examine the communication profile and peer interactions of John, a 9-year-old autistic child ...

Anxiety Moderates the Relationship Between Peer Exclusivity and Peer R by Hailee Buras
Relational aggression (i.e., harming the victims relationships, reputation/status, or feelings of belongingness) is associated with a number of adverse correlates among college students (Dahlen, Czar, Prather, & Dyess, 2013; Ostrov & Houston, 2008). Peer exclusivity (i.e., the desire that ones close friends do not have other close friends) has been shown to be positively related to relational aggression in peer relationships (Kawabata, Youngblood, & Hamaguchi, 2014); however, this relationship has not been widely explored. Anxiety is also relevant to relational aggression among college students (Cooley, Frazer, Fite, Brown, & DiPierro, 2016; Gros, Gros, & Simms, 2010) and may inform our understanding of the relationship between peer exclusivity and relational aggression. The present study examined the relationships of peer exclusivity and anxiety symptoms to relational aggression in a sample of traditionally aged (i.e., 18-25) college students (N = 260) recruited from the University of Southern

Wayne Osgood - Center for Life Course & Longitudinal Studies
Wayne Osgoods research concerns crime and deviance over the life course, especially during the period of dramatic change from early adolescence through the first decade of adulthood. He is especially interested in the role of peer relations and time use in the growth and decline of delinquency and substance use over this span. Evaluating the effectiveness of programs addressing these behaviors is also an important aspect of his work. Currently, his principal research project is the PROSPER Peers study, which investigates evolving friendship networks across the full span of adolescence. It is the largest long-term study of adolescent social networks. Funded by National Institute of Drug Abuse through 2018, the PROSPER Peers study follows the friendship networks and problem behavior of two grade cohorts of adolescents in 27 small communities of Iowa and Pennsylvania (over 10,000 youth) on eight occasions from 6th through 12th grade. ...

Peer support or mutual support has a long history in mental health. Recent developments mean that peer support, which originated informally through participation in service user groups, has become incorporated into statutory services through the use of employed intentional support roles. The purpose of this paper is to explore service user perspectives on peer support, particularly looking at the benefits and pitfalls of these developments. The paper is informed by a literature review, and by a series of consultations with 5 service user and peer support groups. The findings suggest that there are many benefits to service users from engaging in peer support, including: shared identity; development and sharing of skills; increased confidence; improved mental health and wellbeing; and the potential for challenging stigma and discrimination. Most of the challenges were associated with intentional support, including: role conflict; setting boundaries; and ensuring adequate training and support. A ...
Tips for Benchmarking Firms Against Their Peers - The Harbus
In addition to these off-the-shelf sources, you can also build your own comparison.. First, youll need to identify your industry peers. A good source of peer groups are the 10-Ks and proxy statements of public companies. Each 10-K has a Competition section listing specific companies believed to be competitors. The proxy statement is required to include a section comparing firms stock performance to self-selected peer groups.. Most company directories list companies by SICs or NAICs. Business information publishers such as Global Access, One-Source, Dun & Bradstreet, and Wards are likely to have assigned a code to your business that allows you to retrieve a list of similarly coded firms. Or, categorize your firm yourself using the codes supplied by the U.S. Census Bureau.. Keep in mind that if your business is not a pure play, and involves many different lines, then it might be best to treat each business area separately and find benchmarks for each segment of your firm. It is also ...

A true peer group comparison shows our facility near the middle of the 3rd quartile. That isnt a great position and indicates a need for additional analysis to see why our costs are so high.. To reduce our maintenance costs, the next step in the process would be to see which Best Practices are being employed by the buildings that our to the left of ours in the chart. We then can see what we may do differently in our facility. Well present more on this in next months article.. In conclusion you can see how the application of filters can impact your relative rankings in a very significant way.
