|i|Scope|/i|. To elucidate the morphological and biochemical |i|in vitro|/i| effects exerted by caffeine, taurine, and guarana, alone or in combination, since they are major components in energy drinks (EDs). |i|Methods and Results|/i|. On human neuronal SH-SY5Y cells, caffeine (0.125–2 mg/mL), taurine (1–16 mg/mL), and guarana (3.125–50 mg/mL) showed concentration-dependent nonenzymatic antioxidant potential, decreased the basal levels of free radical generation, and reduced both superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, especially when combined together. However, guarana-treated cells developed signs of neurite degeneration in the form of swellings at various segments in a beaded or pearl chain-like appearance and fragmentation of such neurites at concentrations ranging from 12.5 to 50 mg/mL. Swellings, but not neuritic fragmentation, were detected when cells were treated with 0.5 mg/mL (or higher doses) of caffeine,

The goal of the present study is to examine mainly the associations of contextual variables with stress and teachers psychological well-being across organizational cultures. The responses (N= 51,782) of a population of primary school teachers from 15 different educational cultures were analyzed. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was implemented to confirm the associations of protective factors with stress and workplace well-being at the individual unit of analysis. Following the individual-level analysis, multiple-group SEM (MGSEM) was conducted to examine whether these relations are equivalent across gender groups across cultures. Next, a series of multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses (MGCFA) were carried out to compare the factor intercepts of the dimensions of work-related stress and workplace well-being within clusters of similar organizational cultures. Results indicated that only a limited number of structural associations vary as a function of gender across all cultures at the individual
The Aβ peptide that accumulates in Alzheimers disease (AD) is derived from amyloid precursor protein (APP) following proteolysis by β- and γ-secretases. Substantial evidence indicates that alterations in APP trafficking within the secretory and endocytic pathways directly impact the interaction of APP with these secretases and subsequent Aβ production. Various members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family have been reported to play a role in APP trafficking and processing and are important risk factors in AD. We recently characterized a distinct member of the LDLR family called LDLR-related protein 10 (LRP10) that shuttles between the trans-Golgi Network (TGN), plasma membrane (PM), and endosomes. Here we investigated whether LRP10 participates in APP intracellular trafficking and Aβ production. In this report, we provide evidence that LRP10 is a functional APP receptor involved in APP trafficking and processing. LRP10 interacts directly with the ectodomain of APP and colocalizes

For years, the native fruit from the Amazon and other foods high in caffeine were branded as dangerous to the arteries. the truth however is that no study has confirmed its link with hypertension. Results After taking account of the contemporaneous effects of joblessness on psychological well-being, and the impact of a range of confounding factors, experiencing a transition from employment to joblessness was significantly predictive of poorer psychological well-being. Transitions into employment were not found to have equal and opposite effects: the positive effects of moving into work from unemployment were not as large as the negative effects of job loss. Transitions between secure and insecure employment did not independently predict changes in psychological well-being.. ...

femMEDs Energy supplement is a source of 11 ingredients for the provision of optimal energy levels. The ingredients include: Guarana [Paullinia cupana], Siberian ginseng [Eleutherococcus senticosus], Magnesium Creatine chelate, Green Tea [Camellia sinensis], Rhodiola rosea, Yerba Mate [Ilex paraguariensis], Cordyceps sinensis, Maral Root [Rhaponticum carthamoides], Chicory [Cichorium intybus], Cayenne [Capsicum annuum] and Chromium.. Guarana [Paullinia cupana] has stimulatory effects on the body which can enhance both mental and physical performance, increase athletic performance and raise energy levels. This is often attributed to its significant caffeine content. In fact, it is proposed that the stimulatory effect of guarana is more gradual and sustained than caffeine due to the caffeine-tannin complex. However, not all of the beneficial effects of guarana on cognitive and physical performance are attributable to its caffeine content alone, but rather to its saponin and tannin content as ...

N2 - The link between off-target anticholinergic effects of medications and acute cognitive impairment in older adults requires urgent investigation. We aimed to determine whether a relevant in vitro model may aid the identification of anticholinergic responses to drugs and the prediction of anticholinergic risk during polypharmacy. In this preliminary study we employed a co-culture of human-derived neurons and astrocytes (NT2.N/A) derived from the NT2 cell line. NT2.N/A cells possess much of the functionality of mature neurons and astrocytes, key cholinergic phenotypic markers and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs). The cholinergic response of NT2 ...
Physical activity and exercise appear to improve psychological health. However, the quantitative effects of Tai Chi on psychological well-being have rarely been examined. We systematically reviewed the effects of Tai Chi on stress, anxiety, depression and mood disturbance in eastern and western populations. Eight English and 3 Chinese databases were searched through March 2009. Randomized controlled trials, non-randomized controlled studies and observational studies reporting at least 1 psychological health outcome were examined. Data were extracted and verified by 2 reviewers. The randomized trials in each subcategory of health outcomes were meta-analyzed using a random-effects model. The quality of each study was assessed. Forty studies totaling 3817 subjects were identified. Approximately 29 psychological measurements were assessed. Twenty-one of 33 randomized and nonrandomized trials reported that 1 hour to 1 year of regular Tai Chi significantly increased psychological well-being including

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1186/s40168-020-00843-8 Interpretive Summary: Parasitic infection is one of the key factors negatively affecting food animal production. The infection can result in mucosal damage, disrupt lipid metabolism in the host tissue and affect gut permeability and intestinal inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of krill oil, a natural product rich in omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and a potent antioxidant astaxanthin, on the gut microbiome and its potential to mitigate the tissue damage induced by parasitic infection. We identified biological pathways through which krill oil ameliorates intestinal inflammation and provided novel insight into the mechanisms via which krill oil improves gut microbial dysbiosis. Our findings will facilitate the development of novel dietary supplements able to improve gut health. Technical Abstract: Background: The anti-inflammatory property of -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) has been exploited in the prevention and ...
