Despite increased emphasis on evidence based practice in recent years a gap remains between evidence and practice, particularly in resource poor countries. Few studies to date have examined the use of knowledge translation strategies to improve health care outcomes in low income countries. However, given that the majority of health care in these settings is provided by workers with less training and limited resources, the theoretical potential for knowledge translation strategies to improve health care delivery and outcomes by integrating best evidence into routine practice may be greatest in these settings.. Knowledge translation (KT) is an approach to changing health care provider behavior to reduce the gap between evidence and practice in health care delivery. There has been a tendency for knowledge translation interventions to employ generic, 'off the shelf', strategies, and apply them to deal with specific issues. This generic approach, fails to recognize the variability in the specific ...

Information diffusion in online social networks has received attention in both research and actual applications. The prevalence of online social networking sites offers the possibility of mining for necessary information. However, existing influence maximization algorithms and newly proposed influence diffusion models do not distinguish between seed nodes (or pilot users) and nonseed nodes and assume all nodes are cooperative in propagating influence. This thesis investigates models and heuristics for noncooperative information diffusion in online social networks. It consists of three parts: tragedy of the commons in online social search (OSS), influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the linear threshold model (LTM), and influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the independent cascade model (ICM). Firstly, the tragedy of the commons problem in OSS is considered. I propose an analytical model that captures the behavior of OSS nodes, and, from a ...

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a condition affecting relatively young patients and has high rates of morbidity and mortality. Online health communities have emerged to fill the void for patient advocacy and information, allowing individuals with shared experiences and chronic disorders to connect. OBJECTIVE: We have developed an online health community for aSAH patients, and this pilot study was conducted to evaluate it from a patient's perspective. METHODS: We implemented an online, members-only, health community (MijnSAB, translation: MySAH) in addition to the usual aSAH care at Radboudumc, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. A questionnaire that was sent to consecutive aSAH patients was used to evaluate the usability and utility of MySAH. Answers were provided using a 5-point Likert scale. There was also one open-ended question asking about what was missing from the MySAH tool. RESULTS: In total, 66 consecutive patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage were informed ...
Modifiable health behaviors, a leading cause of illness and death in many countries, are often driven by individual beliefs and sentiments about health and disease. Individual behaviors affecting health outcomes are increasingly modulated by social networks, for example through the associations of like-minded individuals - homophily - or through peer influence effects. Using a statistical approach to measure the individual temporal effects of a large number of variables pertaining to social network statistics, we investigate the spread of a health sentiment towards a new vaccine on Twitter, a large online social network. We find that the effects of neighborhood size and exposure intensity are qualitatively very different depending on the type of sentiment. Generally, we find that larger numbers of opinionated neighbors inhibit the expression of sentiments. We also find that exposure to negative sentiment is contagious - by which we merely mean predictive of future negative sentiment expression - while
This paper describes the realization of the Virtual Research Environment „Semantic MediaWiki for Collaborative Corpora Analysis" (SMW-CorA), which targets research in the fields of humanities and social sciences. The research community of „history of education" is used as a starting point for an exemplary design and an intended future distribution across disciplinary boundaries. This project alignment offers the possibility to articulate actual interactions with research data and to design capacities for interactions in a Virtual Research Environment in a participatory and agile way. On the other hand, concrete added values can be identified by involving a specialized research library and technological components are realized which can subsequently be used in other research communities. Three aspects of the Virtual Research Environment will be illustrated ...
The UB-led consortium that won a prestigious $15 million Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health in 2015 has adopted a new name and visual identity that better represent the work in which its members are engaged.. Semantic interoperability - the ability to send human readable and computable records from place to place. An electronic health record with vocabulary controlled, structured problem lists, medications, labs, and radiology studies sending this data into structured lists within a personal health record is an example of semantic interoperability. Semantic interoperability ensures that decision support software can interpret the transmitted data and perform quality and safety checks such as drug/drug or drug/allergy checking. Google Health supports semantic interoperability for problems, medications, allergies and laboratories. The Continuity of Care Document, the clinical summary which has been recognized by Secretary Leavitt and the American Health Information Community (AHIC) is semantically interoperable, as detailed below ...

Data Collection Notes: The data available for download are not weighted and users will need to weight the data prior to analysis.. Analyses of large HINTS domains usually produce reliable estimates, but analyses of small domains may yield unreliable estimates, as indicated by their large variances. Users should pay particular attention to the standard error and coefficient of variation (relative standard error) for estimates of means, proportions, and totals. Small sample sizes for particular analyses will tend to result in unstable estimates. Additional information about sampling, interviewing, sampling error, weighting, and the universe of each question may be found in the codebook documentation.. Variable names containing more than 16 characters were truncated in order to be compatible with current statistical programs. Therefore, variable names may differ slightly from those in the original documentation.. Each iteration of HINTS consists of a cross-sectional independent sample; however, ...

This systematic review identified 32 studies that investigated a variety of KT strategies to put research into practice in the allied health disciplines. This review complements the extant research on broad approaches to put research into practice in particular disciplines, such as nursing e.g.,[10],[11] and the reviews of specific KT strategies (e.g., audit and feedback, financial incentives) with a focus on medicine e.g.,[7-9]. Until now, reviews completed by Hakkennes and Dodd[19] and Menon et al.[20] provided the most comprehensive data on KT strategies in allied health; however, our review built on this existing research in several important ways. First, our review explored all types of interventions or approaches (i.e., a variety of professional and financial interventions) to put research into professional practice. Second, our review had a concise conceptualization of allied health that reflected typical, acute care health environments in Canada (i.e., containing five professions). ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Factors affecting the Internet behaviour of horticultural growers in Flanders, Belgium. AU - Taragola, Nicole. AU - Van Lierde, Dirk. PY - 2010/3/1. Y1 - 2010/3/1. N2 - Horticultural growers in Flanders make low use of the Internet. The Internet applications used most frequently are online banking, information on market prices and yields of outputs, and weather forecasts. However, a large variation of the Internet behaviour is observed among the growers. The influence of personal characteristics (biographical and social characteristics, communication behaviour) and business size is examined on the use of five groups of Internet applications: general applications, basic management information, specialised management information, information on output prices and yields, and e-commerce. Data were collected at 163 horticultural businesses with Internet use for business purposes. Categorical principal component analysis of the explaining variables resulted in five dimensions. ...

Facebook had in October launched a new blood donations feature, starting in India, to make it easier for people to donate blood.. "There are now more than 4 million blood donors signed up on Facebook in India," said Naomi Gleit, Facebook's vice-president of social good.. In addition to enabling people in need to connect to blood donors, our tools also allow organisations to connect to donors more efficiently, she said in a blog post.. Gleit said hospitals, blood banks and non-profits can create voluntary blood donation events on Facebook, and nearby donors are notified of the opportunities to donate blood.. "In early 2018, we will expand blood donations to Bangladesh, where, like India, there are thousands of posts from people looking for blood donors every week," she added.. Facebook users in India had crossed the 240 million mark in July, surpassing the 240 million in the US, according to a media report.. Acculturation has emerged as an independent risk factor for different health practices across immigrant groups. Prompted by evidence of increasing melanoma incidence among Latinos, the present research investigated the impact of acculturation on Latinos' sun safety. Data from 496 Latino respondents to the 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey were analyzed with multiple linear regression and structural equation models. Sunscreen use, seeking shade and wearing protective clothing were the primary outcomes, assessed by frequency scales. Acculturation was the primary predictor, assessed by a composite index. The direct, mediated, and moderated effects of acculturation on sun-safe behaviors were investigated in three studies. Hypothesized mediators included health status, education, and social networks; hypothesized moderators included gender, age, region, and health insurance status.; In adjusted models in Study 1, increased acculturation was associated with decreased use of shade or ...

Álvarez, J.F. and Cervera, M.G. (2015). Information Literacy Grade of Secondary School Teachers in Spain: Beliefs and Self-Perceptions. Comunicar, 23 (24), 187-194. http://dx.doi.org/10.3916/C45-2015-20 The abstract reads "Information Literacy is one of the dimensions of digital competence and, in today's information and media-based society, it should be a skill that everyone develops, especially secondary school teachers due to their influence on this crucial stage of student development. In this investigation we aim to determine the current level of information literacy of secondary school teachers in Spain. For this purpose we have designed a questionnaire (n=2,656) which is divided into two parts: the first asks questions related to belief and self-perception of information literacy indicators, and the second presents practical cases in which the teachers have to demonstrate their skills in information literacy. The results confirm that secondary school teachers' beliefs show rather high ...

The pathophysiology of IC is complex and not completely understood. This makes it difficult to develop definitive therapeutic modalities and to establish a standard animal model for translational research. Current approaches have mostly emphasized merging clinical practice and translational research; therefore, it is important to establish proper translational models similar to the disease in humans. Approximately 20 animal models with some similar characteristics to the IC phenotype have been generated over the past several decades [15,18]. From 1980 to 2000, the models were typically prepared by inducing inflammatory conditions in the bladder by intravesical instillation of chemical irritants, such as acetone, acrolein, acid, turpentine, mustard oil, or croton oil [19-22]. In the 2000s, IC animal models were commonly generated by injection of bacterial LPS, systemic administration of CYP, pseudorabies virus infection, or systemic induction of autoimmunity [9,14,16,23,24]. Although these ...

Workflow management systems are becoming important not only as key technology in their own wight but they are gaining leverage as key application of database management systems. One of the main issues of workflow management systems, and thus implicitly of database management systems, must be their support for flexibility to cope with frequently changing requirements in an organization. This has been the driving force behind the development of the workflow management system TriGS[flow]. It is based on an object-oriented database management system, enhanced with active concepts in terms of ECA rules and object evolution in terms of roles. In this way, flexible modeling and enactment of business processes is supported allowing changes even during workflow execution. The architecture of TriGS[flow] and ist key concepts for workflow modeling are presented ...
In melanoma, vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) expression and consequent lymphangiogenesis correlate with metastasis and poor prognosis. VEGF-C also promotes tumor immunosuppression, suggesting that lymphangiogenesis inhibitors may be clinically useful in combination with immunotherapy. We addressed this concept in mouse melanoma models with VEGF receptor-3 (VEGFR-3)-blocking antibodies and unexpectedly found that VEGF-C signaling enhanced rather than suppressed the response to immunotherapy. We further found that this effect was mediated by VEGF-C-induced CCL21 and tumor infiltration of naïve T cells before immunotherapy because CCR7 blockade reversed the potentiating effects of VEGF-C. In human metastatic melanoma, gene expression of VEGF-C strongly correlated with CCL21 and T cell inflammation, and serum VEGF-C concentrations associated with both T cell activation and expansion after peptide vaccination and clinical response to checkpoint blockade. We propose that VEGF-C ...
Social Media Strategy? Yes! Do They Know Storytelling? Nope.

I just viewed this video about storytelling and social media strategy and it was very frustrating.

What I liked about the material being shared was the social media content model that The Pulse Network is showing here. It is very clear.

But they are totally confused about storytelling in marketing. When they talk about storytelling, they define it as the snippets people share on social media. For them, lots of snippets create a story. Noooooo.....lots of snippets grouped together create a group of snippets. These are usually of opinions, thoughts, information tidbits, or promotions. If there's a narrative thread or point, you're lucky. It's very a very haphazard marketing methodology.

I love the title of the video, though. Storytelling can drive social media marketing, if you understand the dynamics and elements of creating compelling stories.

So how do you storify social media and internet
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response' is a term that's emerged from online health communities to describe a 'tingling' sensation certain people seem to experience in response to particular sensory stimuli and audiovisual cues. In recent years numerous 'ASMRtists' have begun using platforms like YouTube to circulate roleplays, readings and performances all designed to elicit these mysterious tingles. In this podcast, produced in collaboration with the Arts and Culture Unit, Resonance FM and ASMRtists Whispers Red and Muted Vocal, we ask what ASMR culture can tell us about how genres, ideas and communities emerge online. Over the course of the show we discuss current academic thinking on how the internet is changing understandings of identity, health, creativity and belonging, and see whether the terms and concepts scholars are developing ring true for those involved with emerging web cultures.. ...
HL7 is an organization that was founded in 1987 to set international standards for how health information is exchanged between information systems. It expanded its scope beyond data interchange to include specifications for EHR system functions through its Electronic Health Record Technical Committee. The Electronic Health Record Technical Committee, which was founded in 2001, published its first balloted standard for EHR system functions in 2004.34 This standard is being used as the basis for the EHR system certification process specified by the federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (created by Executive Order 13335, April 28, 2004, and authorized by Congress [FR Doc No. 05-16446, Filed August 18, 2005]). The purpose of certification is to set a minimum level of functionality that EHR systems will have to meet to qualify for special treatment, such as participation in pay-for-performance programs.35,36 By contract with the Office of the National ...
We applied social network analysis to pig trader networks on the Kenya-Uganda border. Social network analysis is a recently developed tool, which is useful for understanding value chains and improving disease control policies. We interviewed a sample of 33 traders about their experiences with trade and African swine fever (ASF), analyzed the networks they generated in purchasing pigs and selling pork and their potential contribution to modulating dissemination of the ASF virus (ASFV). The majority of the traders were aware of clinical signs of ASF and the risk of trade transmitting ASFV. Most said they avoided buying pigs from ASF outbreak villages or sick pigs but their experiences also indicated that inadvertent purchase was relatively common. Traders had early knowledge of outbreaks since they were contacted by farmers who had heard rumours and wanted to sell their pigs to avoid the risk of them dying. Individual traders bought pigs in up to nine villages, and up to six traders operated in a ...
